Today on Blooming Curious we welcome Ashleigh Sharp. Ash is a former early childhood classroom teacher and now the founder of Play More, a business focused on the importance of letting children play freely with loose parts. The loose parts mindset enables children to be trusted, to be creative without adult interference, and lets kids (and adults!) learn as they play. Ash talks about avoiding controlled environments and letting kids' imaginations take over, helping children develop and nurture creativity and problem solving skills. We discuss strategies educators can take to incorporate loose parts into their indoor and outdoor settings and the benefits of loose parts play on academic performance. We chat about Ash's home schooling journey and how the power of loose parts is impacting the way her own child learns. For all the links and the full transcript of the interview go to https://edslessons.com/exploring-the-be…loose-parts-play/ Does this content resonate with you? On this episode of Playfully Faithful Parenting, we explore the concept of loose parts play and its intersection with faith. Joy highlights how loose parts can help children learn to take risks in a safe and creative environment. We delve into the benefits of loose parts beyond just creativity, discussing how they can foster problem-solving skills and enhance concentration. The importance of combining Bible stories with loose parts play is emphasized, as it can spark imagination and storytelling. We also draw parallels between the skills showcased in artistic crafts, such as engraving and designing, and the potential for children to tap into their own creative abilities. Throughout the episode, we are reminded of the limitless potential and opportunities for play that loose parts offer, and how they can enhance children's physical, cognitive, spiritual, and social/emotional growth. Join me and Miriam Beloglovsky as we chat about Loose Parts Play and the philosophy behind loose parts. Loose parts is not only about the materials but the experiences children have through playing with these materials. It's a mindset of the educators. Stay-at-home orders are now in place for much of the U.S and the world. This may leave many parents feeling stressed about keeping children entertained and busy. One simple way to keep your kids active while home is to introduce loose parts play. Jill Wood, MLIS, explains what loose parts play is, how to implement it in your home, and the importance of play in a child’s day. She also provides ideas for everyday household items that can be used to start your loose parts play at home. This conversation will empower parents to embrace boredom and spark a bit of creativity in their child’s day. About Jill WoodJill Wood is the Director of Adventure Play at The Parish School, as well as the school’s librarian. She holds a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin. Jill has been the Director of Adventure Play at The Parish School since 2008. Outside of The Parish School, Jill is the co-founder of Bayou City Play, an organization that sets up inclusive loose parts playgrounds at Shriner's Hospital for Children and pop-up playgrounds throughout the city of Houston. Jill believes that play is an integral part of a child’s educational and developmental experience, and, like exploring library shelves, it’s much better when there are a lot of choices and no one is telling you exactly what to choose!Related Links:Parish School blog article: Loose Parts Take Part in Early Childhood PlayFairy Dust Teaching article: Loose Parts Collection of play related articles relating to Corona virus: Play Whales Article Round-UpLoose Parts Materials:Cardboard tubes and boxesMilk cratesEgg cartonsPlastic bottles and capsFabric – small scraps large enough for capes or fort-building are both greatPieces of string or ribbonClothespinsPool noodlesCardboard packing material of odd shapesOatmeal containers/other empty and washed food containers, including soda bottlesWooden spoonsMixing bowlSaucepan, cooking pot, muffin tin, bowlsCorksWrapping paperTennis ballsActivities to try with and without loose parts:Den buildingPirate Adventure: See Jill's VideoPlaying "store" or "hospital"Marble mazePotion-making in the yard Extended bath time with loose parts that float and hold waterWrestlingTree climbingBike ridesLong walksGoNoodle, dance parties, Cosmic Kids Yoga Podcasts for kids:https://www.storynory.com/https://www.npr.org/podcasts/532788972/circle-roundhttps://www.storypirates.com/podcastSupport the show (https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/supportTPS?code=New%20Website)

To me everything and anything can be a loose part, even me for the children to use how they see fit in their play space. He has researched dens extensively since the 70s, in Devon, England, and the Caribbean. "In the middle childhood, ages seven to 11, a den is the child's chance to create a home away from home that is secret, and becomes a manifestation of who they are. The den," Sobel argues, "is the chrysalis out of which the butterfly is born." https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2006/apr/15/familyandrelationships.family3 Book: King Jack and the Dragon https://amzn.to/2EP1562 Loose Parts Play Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/LoosePartsPlay/ Loose Parts Play Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LoosePartsPlay/ Inside Outside Michiana Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/InsideOutsideMichiana/ Loose Parts Nature Play Website: http://insideoutsidemichiana.blogspot.com
