It's time for another Listener Mail episode, and as always, the High on Home Grown community brings the questions that get us thinking! This week we discuss the relationship between compost and pest management, and whether using homemade compost indoors carries the same risks as bringing pests in from the garden. We also dive into outdoor growing, covering the common pests, diseases, and warning signs growers should be keeping an eye out for throughout the season, from powdery mildew and honeydew to insects and environmental issues. We answer questions about reusing Grove-style curing bags, how long they last, and whether they need cleaning between harvests. The conversation then turns to travel, favourite holiday destinations, cannabis tourism, social clubs, and why consumption lounges haven't become more widespread in parts of the United States. Finally, we discuss what makes certain cannabis strains command such high prices, looking at genetics, rarity, breeding work, marketing, hype, and whether some strains are genuinely worth the premium. As always, it's a laid-back mix of growing advice, cannabis culture, travel chat, and community questions, with plenty of laughs along the way.

1. Scope of Fraud The testimony describes large‑scale, systemic fraud within Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). Individual childcare centers allegedly billed hundreds of thousands to over $1 million annually, often with no real children present. 2. Organized and Long‑Running Scheme Fraud was not isolated or accidental; it showed characteristics of a loosely organized criminal enterprise operating for years (at least 2014–2019). Some perpetrators reportedly learned about the scheme before arriving in the U.S., indicating cross‑border knowledge of vulnerabilities in the system. 3. Common Fraud Methods Billing for nonexistent children and extended hours (e.g., multiple shifts, 7 days a week). Operating “paper” childcare centers that closed immediately once payments were stopped. Kickback arrangements involving parents, co‑owners, or employees. Reusing addresses and reopening under new business names after enforcement actions. 4. Evidence Gathered by Investigators Physical surveillance showed centers operating without children or staff. Electronic evidence (texts, phones, computers) revealed admissions of fraud and intent to profit. Investigations led to multiple felony convictions, including at least one federal case with prison time and restitution exceeding $1 million. 5. Overwhelming Volume of Fraud Investigators received so many credible tips that they had to prioritize only the highest‑dollar cases. Centers billing less than ~$700,000 often could not be addressed due to limited resources. 6. Internal Resistance and Obstruction According to the whistleblower, senior DHS officials discouraged, undermined, or obstructed investigations once fraud became large and visible. Actions alleged include: Attempts to alter or suppress information sent to the Legislative Auditor Harassment and intimidation of investigators Organizational changes that reduced investigators’ authority Procedural delays that significantly reduced investigative capacity 7. Retaliation Against Whistleblowers Investigators who pushed fraud cases reportedly faced: Threats and bullying Negative performance actions Loss of decision‑making power The whistleblower ultimately resigned, stating he would not be complicit. 8. Failure of Oversight The testimony suggests institutional tolerance of fraud, contrasting sharply with standards enforced in law enforcement agencies. The whistleblower emphasizes that minor theft would not have been tolerated in his prior roles, while millions in losses were allowed to continue at DHS. 9. Federal Intervention Federal agencies (FBI, IRS‑CI, HHS‑OIG) eventually became involved due to the scale and nature of suspected crimes. Raids, indictments, and convictions occurred after years of state‑level warnings. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. What happens when a national art museum moves beyond the capital, and into a small coastal village? In this episode, host Michael Booth meets architect Reiulf Ramstad to explore SMK Thy, a new branch of the Danish National Gallery set by the Limfjord. Reusing materials, preserving existing structures and working closely with the landscape, the project becomes more than a museum, it's a meeting place for art, nature and community. From a jar of local honey that sparked the competition idea to the ambition of reusing everything on site, the conversation reveals an architecture rooted in place, and a new way of thinking about centre and periphery. What starts as a conversation about a spicy, emotionally charged romance quickly evolves into a masterclass on translation between mediums, visual storytelling, and creative strategy.Russell breaks down one of the most important concepts in comics: the “gutter”. The space between panels where the reader's brain fills in the action, effectively turning still images into a movie. This becomes the central lens for the entire discussion. Adapting a book is not about copying scenes. It's about choosing the keyframes that allow the audience to imagine everything else.Lee reflects on the emotional core of her original work, particularly how romance functions as emotional catharsis and psychological processing, especially for readers navigating fear, vulnerability, and desire. The conversation expands into why romance is often misunderstood, despite being one of the most emotionally impactful genres. On the business side, the episode offers a surprisingly tactical breakdown of how authors can approach comics as a multi-format asset strategy. From Kickstarter campaigns to special edition illustrated books, art prints, and multiple cover variants, Russell outlines how one creative project can be leveraged across multiple products to maximize return on investment. The result is both philosophical and practical: a reminder that adapting your work isn't about preservation. It's about reinvention, understanding what each medium does best, and building a creative ecosystem where your story can thrive in multiple forms.Topics Covered:* The origin of Sold to the Berserkers and its rapid, emotionally driven creation* Why romance readers crave catharsis: transforming fear into emotionally satisfying outcomes* The role of “non-con reluctance fantasy” and why it resonates with certain audiences* Adapting older work for modern audiences and shifting cultural contexts* The challenge of translating internal, emotional prose into visual storytelling* Why some scenes work in books but fail visually in comics* The importance of tone adjustment and softening elements for new mediums* Understanding audience differences between romance readers and comic fans* The concept of the “gutter” in comics and why it's the key to storytelling* How comics rely on readers to mentally fill in action between panels* Keyframes vs. exposition: choosing the right moments to depict visually* Why comics are about triggering imagination, not showing everything* Common mistakes authors make when adapting books into comics* Why comics and novels require fundamentally different storytelling approaches* The limitations of comics: less space for interiority and deep philosophical dialogue* The strengths of comics: action, visuals, symbolism, and emotional immediacy* Why adaptation should be treated as a new creative work, not a direct translation* Examples of adapting comics back into novels and expanding interiority* The importance of understanding what each medium does best* Recommendation: Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud as a foundational resource* Emotional storytelling vs. informational storytelling and why emotion drives engagement* Romance as “emotional labor processing” and its cultural undervaluation* How stories help process fear, anger, and emotional complexity* Why readers must “slow down” when reading comics compared to prose* The interplay between words and images in effective comic storytelling* Practical structure: typical comic length (20–32 pages) and panel breakdowns* The concept of splash pages and how they impact pacing and visual storytelling* Building a multi-product strategy: comic + illustrated book + art prints* Reusing art across formats to maximize ROI* Cover strategies: multiple variants, NSFW vs SFW versions, premium editions* Budget realities: comic production costs and working with artists* Using Kickstarter to fund comic projects and validate demand* Leveraging communities and networks to find collaborators* The importance of “who you know” in creative production pipelines* Creating special edition books with integrated illustrations* Stretch goals and expanding visual content post-launch* Using one creative project to generate multiple income streams* Final takeaway: don't translate your book—reimagine it for the medium you're in This is a public episode. Dave Rosa, CEO and President of NeuroOne, medtech entrepreneur, board member and former executive at St. Jude Medical, Boston Scientific and C.R. Bard. With three decades in medical devices and more than $200 million raised, Dave brings a rare mix of operator, inventor and capital markets experience to the future of neurotechnology and pain care.In this episode, we unpack one of the biggest mistakes medtech companies make: building technology without enough real-world user feedback. Dave explains why innovation for the sake of innovation often fails, especially in larger companies, and why the best products are shaped by how physicians and patients actually use them. We also explore NeuroOne's unique approach of combining diagnostics and therapeutics through the same electrode, and why that kind of multifunctional platform thinking can be both clinically powerful and commercially strategic.A major theme in this conversation is regulatory strategy. Dave walks through NeuroOne's deliberate “diagnostic first, therapeutic second” FDA pathway, explaining why starting with an easier regulatory indication can de-risk the technology, shorten timelines and create a stronger platform for later therapeutic claims. We also discuss the value of reusing the same generator across multiple indications, how founders often wait too long to engage with FDA, and why platform leverage matters from both a business and development perspective. We also go deep on chronic pain and lower back pain. Dave shares why today's pain solutions often fall short, how different triggers require different treatment approaches, and where technologies like ablation, stimulation and smarter electrode design could shift outcomes. He also highlights how seemingly small user-experience issues, like frequent recharging, can destroy patient adherence and wipe out billions in company value.Timestamps[00:00:08] Why MedTech Companies Fail When They Ignore Real User Feedback[00:02:04] Innovation vs Iteration: When “New” Adds No Real Value[00:02:22] Combining Diagnostics and Therapeutics With the Same Electrode[00:03:52] Why NeuroOne Chose a Diagnostic-First FDA Strategy[00:05:21] Pain Management Today: Ablation, Stimulation and Complex Back Pain[00:08:21] What Is Fundamentally Broken in Lower Back Pain Solutions[00:09:26] How Small Patient Frictions Can Destroy Adoption and Valuation[00:11:11] The Power of Reusing the Same Generator Across Multiple Indications[00:13:00] The FDA Mistake Many Founders Still Make[00:21:15] Where Neurotechnology and Pain Management Are Heading NextConnect with Dave - https://www.linkedin.com/in/daverosa/Learn more about NeuroOne - https://nmtc1.com/Get in touch with Karandeep Badwal - https://www.linkedin.com/in/karandeepbadwal/ Follow Karandeep on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@KarandeepBadwalSubscribe to the Podcast

In this episode, Jeff Mains sits down with Luv Kapur, a technology leader at Bit who's reshaping how enterprises build software. Luv shares his journey from leading platform engineering at one of Canada's largest pension funds to joining a startup on a mission to help organizations scale development through composability and AI-powered tools. The conversation explores how AI is fundamentally changing software development—not by writing more code, but by enabling teams to compose better solutions with less custom code. Luv challenges the hype around code generation, arguing that the real bottleneck isn't writing code but translating business requirements into sound architecture and reusing battle-tested components.Luv also offers a grounded perspective on AI's impact on jobs, the importance of discoverability in component libraries, and practical advice for CTOs building composable organizations.Key Takeaways[0:00] - Episode introduction: AI-powered, cloud-native enterprise development tools[1:00] - The hidden cost of poor discoverability in internal libraries and how it silently slows high-performing teams[4:26] - Luv's background: From leading platform engineering at Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan to joining Bit[4:47] - The spark for the leap: Believing in the mission of helping enterprises scale development globally[5:19] - The consistency problem: When products span multiple teams but feel disjointed to users[6:37] - Building a platform team whose customers are developers themselves[7:23] - Discoverability as the key problem: Developers couldn't find what already existed[9:24] - Why inner source software transforms development artifacts into invaluable organizational assets[11:37] - Viewing your org chart as a dependency graph, not a hierarchy[15:51] - The AI hype is justified, but code generation isn't the real bottleneck[17:01] - The bottleneck is translating business requirements into software architecture, not writing code[18:41] - AI should help us do less work, not more work[19:27] - Why developers won't lose jobs: There's infinite work, not finite work[20:19] - Reusing battle-tested components increases quality and reduces surface area for errors[21:59] - Reducing AI context to dependency graphs and APIs prevents hallucinations[23:05] - Private enterprise data is the gold mine for AI value[24:35] - The rise of citizen developers: Non-technical people building with natural language[26:40] - Empowering citizen developers with internal component marketplaces[27:19] - How AI changes the build vs. buy equation through faster prototyping[30:09] - Internal tools will be hit hardest by AI disruption[34:41] - SaaS companies must align with core business value to stay sticky[36:19] - The biggest mistake: Equating vibe-engineered solutions with production-ready software[39:01] - Building AI muscle: Start with clear scoped goals, not vague initiatives[40:45] - The future: Higher skill ceiling, elimination of junior developer roles, but more opportunities overall[43:45] - Junior developers must contribute to open source and build visible impact[44:31] - The one capability every software leader needs: Willingness to adopt AI and keep learningTweetable Quotes"For an internal team, if it doesn't get adopted, it's useless. WE'RE BACK from our December break. At the end of '25, Kemp Gregory — CEO and co-founder of Renewal — joined good traffic for a conversation about energy infrastructure, the hidden potential of idle oil wells, and why the future of renewable energy storage might already be in the ground. As cities debate electric cars, housing development, and transit expansion, energy remains the crucial constraint — one that demands innovation beyond conventional batteries and solar panels.Kemp walks us through Renewal's unconventional approach: converting millions of abandoned oil and gas wells into gravity-based energy storage systems. He explains how 30,000-pound weights moving up and down inside existing steel infrastructure can discharge power to the grid when needed and store it when it's cheap. From his early days as a petroleum engineer, to his pivot into clean energy at Stanford, Kemp shares how technical knowledge from fossil fuels is being repurposed for renewable infrastructure — and why working with local drilling crews and engineering firms matters more than reinventing everything from scratch. We also touch on: Why energy storage is the bottleneck for electrification. The geometry problem of EVs and infrastructure strain. How data centers highlight AI's energy costs. Standing on the shoulders of the oil and gas industry. Why rural Texas and California need the same solutions. The importance of making technical work accessible. Send us a textA Melbourne winter. A real gap in kids' wool headwear. A founder with a finance brain and a product heart. That is how Acorn Kids began. In this episode, Fiona Savaris shares how a winter beanie line turned into a year-round headwear brand that stockists love, why wholesale still wins for volume, and how she just launched swimwear by leveraging prints, suppliers, and existing demand. If you care about cash flow, indent, stockist relationships, and direct-to-consumer growth, you will love this founder story.Learn how to use indent orders to protect margins and place smarter production betsSee how a wholesale-first strategy can fuel longevity and repeat stockist revenueSteal the exact assets that help retailers sell more hats, beanies, and swim hatsHear the behind-the-scenes of a category expansion into swimwear that makes senseThe spark: Fiona could not find warm, design-forward kids hats in Melbourne. She starts winter-only with wool beanies, mittens, and scarves made through a women's collective and Brunswick production. The shift: Summer hats unlock smoother cash flow. Parents need hats for daycare and kinder. Kids lose hats. Heads grow. DTC sells summer all year. The engine: Wholesale remains the volume play. Disciplined launch timing, no constant discounting, and shared lifestyle photography keep stockists profitable. The system: Present ranges on Brandboom, take indent orders, back winners, manage MOQs for healthy margins, and hold core SKUs for reorders. The expansion: From swim hats to swimwear. Same brand prints. Specialist makers. A product customers already asked for.The team: Two full-time. Outsourced specialists for Klaviyo email marketing, Meta ads, photography, design, and sales support. Agents plus trade shows to reconnect face-to-face.The real life: Growth is not linear. This show has been flagged as Explicit by the host. Presenter explores Thermosol refill challenges, proprietary adapters, and DIY solutions to optimize mosquito repellent efficiency. New Design Metal Refill Adapter For Thermacell Butane Cartridge DIY US Shipping https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4963965 ( IDK if works ... ) https://www.ebay.com/itm/375229842193 https://www.ebay.com/itm/256712359477 https://www.ebay.com/itm/386734600195 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6lAzan0MiU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIf2SMrDY7E Wine Bottle Torch Kit 8 Pack, Includes 8 Long Life Torch Wicks, Lamp Cover & Brass Wick Mount(13.7 Inch,Bottle not Included) https://www.amazon.com/Bottle-Torch-Wicks-Copper-Included/dp/B01MSRJJTA Aldi https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4780152 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2104000 IDEAS: Thermosol mosquito repellent devices require specific refill methods. Proprietary butane adapters create refill barriers for Thermosol. 3D-printed adapters offer a customizable refill solution. Butane refill systems include nozzles tailored to Thermosol cartridges. Proprietary check valves in cartridges complicate refills. Pressure management is critical during refilling. Marking the fill line prevents overfilling. O-rings must be carefully removed to access check valves. A wood screw can extract the proprietary check valve. Refilled Thermosol devices often use Chinese-yum pads. Discolored pads indicate the need for replacement. Yard waste storage increases fire risk for Thermosol. "Slit in the middle" adapters enable effective refills. Adapter design mimics regular butane cartridge geometry. Fuel escape through slits rather than central tube. Overfilling leads to excessive pressure buildup. Reusing empty Thermosol containers via refills. Combining DIY methods with commercial refill kits. Alternative nozzles may fail without proper adapter. Proprietary valve removal enables long-term cost savings. RECOMMENDATIONS: Use 3D-printed adapters for Thermosol refills. Extract proprietary check valves with a wood screw. Mark the fill line to prevent overfilling. Replace o-rings carefully to avoid damage. Store Thermosol in fire-safe containers. Combine DIY slits with commercial nozzles. Swap out discolored pads regularly. Repurpose empty Thermosol containers via refills. Use a tapered object with a central slit for refills. Avoid proprietary adapters by modifying existing nozzles. Pressurize and depressurize during refill cycles. Source affordable Chinese-yum pads for replacements. Inspect valves for one-way check mechanisms. Follow video tutorials for adapter installation. Prioritize sealed containers for long-term storage. Adapt butane lighter attachments for Thermosol. Test refill methods with empty containers first. Document fill line marks for future reference. Compare DIY solutions to commercial refill kits. Advocate for open-standard Thermosol refills. Provide feedback on this episode.
