British Lord Peter Hain has vowed to continue to “haunt” and pursue State Capture-implicated company Bain. Speaking to BizNews from the House of Lords after the British government decided not to re-suspend Bain from getting government contracts, Lord Hain says: “I would like every government in the world, because they do a lot of work for governments and the public sectors in the countries in which they operate generally, I would like them to be suspended from that work. Their global reputation is already toxic because of their complicity in this…State Capture disaster for South Africa, which set the country back so far and from which you're still trying to recover.” Lord Hain says there needs to be an admission in the business community of its culpability. “…the reason I'm so passionate about this is it wasn't just the politicians that were guilty. It takes two to tango. And it was the businesses who paid the bribes, who paid the backhanders, who did the soft audits… who did the whitewash reports…”

Nelson Mandela was the most iconic figure in South African history because of his heroic struggle against apartheid and racism, but he wouldn't have done what he had done if not for the brave leaders who also took the stand against the oppressive establishment in their own ways. Decades before being a Lord in the UK Parliament, Peter Hain was one of those people. A young man at that time, Lord Hain started simply by opposing the all-White South African cricket team. You wouldn't believe just how significant that was unless you heard the whole story. So much has his impact been that he was considered Public Enemy No. 1 by the ruling apartheid government. Decades later, Lord Hain has a powerful message to all world leaders and every one of us who's aspiring for real change in the world. Stay tuned and learn what he has to say!Love the show? Former Secretary of State Lord Peter Hain's remarkable life was forged in crisis. His parents' peaceful but determined activism against apartheid – and the drama that surrounded his family as a result – was the backdrop to Peter's upbringing in South Africa. The Hains were constantly harassed – and at one stage jailed by the South African security services. When a close family friend was convicted and executed for the bombing of a railway station – an attack which his family condemned – it was Peter, aged just 15, who spoke at the funeral. Peter's parents moved to the UK in 1966 … exiled from the country they loved. He joined the British anti-apartheid movement and aged just 19 became the Chairman of the infamous Stop the 70 Tour which organised direct action against South Africa's proposed cricket tour of England. A major success for the anti-apartheid movement. Peter's campaigning led to him being followed and bugged by Mi5, receiving death threats and becoming the subject of an assassination attempt. A life in British politics beckoned for Peter … but not before more extraordinary drama and crisis. As a Labour politician he held office as Welsh Secretary, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and Northern Ireland Secretary, playing a key role in negotiating the power sharing settlement in 2007.His time in politics also brought more personal crisis – a donations scandal that he described as a ‘soul searing experience' Now in the Lords, Peter continues to campaign and as an author he's written 29 books including biographies of Mandela, his own brilliant biography A Pretoria Boy and a series of novels focused on the crisis of animal conservation. The latest, The Elephant Conspiracy (see link below) has just been released. A fascinating conversation with someone who has lived, breathed and experienced crisis from so many different angles.Links:Stream/Buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bmSome Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.ukYour Daily Practice: Sleep by Myndstream: https://open.spotify.com/track/5OX9XgJufFz9g63o2Dv2i5?si=b2f9397c92084682Buy Peter's latest book, The Elephant Conspiracy: Volume 2 – https://www.amazon.co.uk/Elephant-Conspiracy-Peter-Hain/dp/1739966058Also read his earlier book, A Pretoria Boy: The Story of South Africa's 'Public Enemy Number One' – https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pretoria-Boy-Africas-Public-Number/dp/1785787632Host – Andy CoulsonCWC production team: Louise Difford and Jane SankeyWith special thanks to Global For all PR and guest approaches please contact – podcast@coulsonpartners.com
As a white boy, Mike Procter grew up in South Africa, a beneficiary of the unfair advantages of Apartheid. When he saw white people doing road works on the way to his hotel from Heathrow during a school cricket trip to England, his eyes were opened to the injustices back home. One of the great fast bowling all-rounders (with a Test bowling average of just 15 and 48 first class centuries), Procter would be stripped of his international career during the years of South Africa's international isolation. Although he helped stage a walk-out in the early 1970s during a domestic game in protest at the Apartheid government refusing to allow two players of colour to tour with the country, he still resented the likes of Peter (now Lord) Hain for their campaign to boycott South African sport. With time, however, he realised Hain, with whom he has been interviewed on stage about their different experiences of the time, was right. Here he tells the story of his extraordinary life in cricket and beyond.

Former UK cabinet minister Lord Peter Hain wants the British government to suspend and ban global management consultancy firm Bain and Company from doing any further work in the UK. This after two commissions of inquiry in South Africa made scathing findings against the company. The Nugent Commission's report stated: “The SARS evidence is a clear example of how the private sector [Bain] colluded with the Executive, including President Zuma, to capture an institution that was highly regarded internationally and render it ineffective.” Hain, together with whistleblower Athol Williams, who fled South Africa in November 2021 after unearthing Bain's role in the calculated evisceration of SARS, held a "positive" meeting with cabinet minister Jacob Rees-Mogg. In a joint interview with BizNews, Hain and Williams explain their continued pressure on governments around the world to cut ties with Bain until it "comes clean". Learn more about your ad choices. Lord Hain is petitioning leaders of the UK and USA to act decisively against the US consultancy, including terminating contracts with the Boston-headquartered firm. In this podcast he talks to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

Since we've been gone, Apple has added cream cheese to its emoji bagel after furious complaints (we discuss what we have on OUR bagels and spoiler alert: it's not cream cheese, Apple); Urban Outfitters has produced an “influencer' Halloween costume of crop top and leggings; and, of course, a new scandal which features a megalomaniac at its centre, has broken: Arcadia chairman, Philip Green, has been accused of sexual and racial harassment after peer Lord Hain exercised his parliamentary immunity (where injunctions do not apply) to name him as the anonymous retail boss who allegedly paid off employees. We discuss the difference between the injunction and the NDA and what constitutes ‘in the public interest.'E-mail thehighlowshow@gmail.comTweet @thehighlowshow Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albomhttps://www.hive.co.uk/Search/Keyword?keyword=Tuesdays%20with%20morrie%20&productType=0Seven Days of Us, by Francesca Hornakhttps://www.hive.co.uk/Search/Keyword?keyword=Seven%20Days%20of%20Us&productType=0Rituals For Everyday, by Nadia Narain and Katia Narain Phillips (pre-order) https://www.hive.co.uk/Search/Keyword?keyword=Rituals%20for%20Every%20Day&productType=0Late In The Day, by Tessa Hadley (pre-order)https://www.hive.co.uk/Product/Tessa-Hadley/Late-in-the-Day/22991701A Keeper, by Graham Nortonhttps://www.hive.co.uk/Product/Graham-Norton/A-Keeper/22246134The class of 1946-2018: Twenty-seven school-shooting survivors bear their scars, and bear witness, as told to Jared Soule and Amelia Schonbek, with a portfolio shot by Michael Avedon for New York magazinehttps://www.nymag.com/intelligencer/amp/2018/10/school-shooting-survivors.htmlWhat is camp now? Henley Intelligence — During this interesting address, Lord Peter Hain, talks directly and candidly about state capture, corruption, collusion, and cronyism, having devoted a great deal of his career to defeating it, much like he did as a key player in the downfall of Bell Pottinger. Lord Hain is a former Leader of the British House of Commons, author of 21 books, politician and activist, having also served in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for twelve years. As Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, he negotiated an end to the conflict, and as a staunch anti-apartheid leader, Peter was instrumental in stopping all-white South African sports tours from 1969 onwards. Don't miss this insightful and important address.
