This segment dives into the indictment of St. Louis County Executive Sam Page over allegations of misusing public funds for a political flyer—an action clearly prohibited by Missouri law. Tom Sullivan, the whistleblower who initially filed the complaint, explains the process and legal details behind the case, including the involvement of the secretary of state, attorney general, and grand jury. Sullivan describes how this indictment marks a rare shift in accountability for local politicians, highlighting the seriousness of the charges, which include misdemeanors and felonies that could force Page to resign. The conversation explores the likelihood of a plea deal, potential consequences, and the broader pattern of corruption that has frustrated many locals. The segment closes by previewing upcoming news on a state audit of Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell and teases a local event in Saint Charles.

Bongani Bingwa speaks to Adam Gilchrist for a whirlwind tour of global headlines in this week’s edition of World View. First, they unpack a landmark development from the UN, where a court ruling now allows nations to sue each other over climate change, raising fresh questions about accountability and international cooperation. Then, attention turns to France, where three cities have imposed night-time curfews on children, igniting debates around public safety, parenting, and state control. Finally, it’s a diplomatic embarrassment in the UK, as London publicly names and shames diplomats who’ve racked up unpaid fines, fueling criticism over diplomatic immunity being used as a free pass. As always, Gilchrist brings sharp perspective to the quirks, conflicts, and conversations shaping the world. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Retail investors who suffer losses in the stock market due to market misconduct could soon find it easier to seek civil recourse. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) will consult on proposals later this year to strengthen investor protection through the enhancement of avenues to do so. Three areas of focus include enabling the pursuit of legal action, facilitating self-organisation, and providing access to funding. Mak Yuen Teen, Professor (Practice) of Accounting, NUS Business School & Director at the Centre for Investor Protection, discusses how adequate the latest suggestions are and if they are akin to giving lifejackets to passengers after putting them on a leaky boat. President Donald Trump is suing the publisher and owner of the Wall Street Journal and seeking damages of $10 billion for defamation.Last week, the paper published an article describing a letter Trump sent to disgraced, self-styled financier Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday in 2003. That letter reportedly included a lewd drawing. The president says — without evidence — that he didn't write the letter. The Journal's publisher says they will defend against the lawsuit. In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote the lawsuit was filed "not only on behalf of your favorite President, ME, but also in order to continue standing up for ALL Americans who will no longer tolerate the abusive wrongdoings of the Fake News Media."We discuss the president's legal action — and the threat of it — against the media. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, rugby league was a code looking to expand nationally after the success of its premier competition in Sydney. Clubs emerged in Brisbane, Newcastle, and the Gold Coast. Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation took the growth in the sport as an indication it ought to expand even further and plotted a coup, to take the running of the code out of the hands of the establishment - the Australian Rugby League. What followed was a war that ripped the sport apart with Murdoch on one side and the other, backed by another multi-millionaire media mogul, Kerry Packer. It was mogul against mogul, club against club, and players against players. In this episode of Judgements we take a deep dive on how and why the war began - and how the game came back together to form what is now the National Rugby League.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last year accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant of crimes against humanity, it seemed like a watershed moment. Global anger over Israel's war in Gaza had long been at boiling point, with people demanding justice for the victims of war. But to this day, they have not been arrested. At the same time, provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice in early 2024 obliging Israel to facilitate the entry and distribution of aid in Gaza appear to have been ignored, according to humanitarian organisations. Without legal enforcement, the capabilities of the world's top court have come into question and the limitations of international law have became more evident. In recent months, civil society groups and national legal coalitions have begun to take matters into their own hands. Lawyers, activists and academics at a grassroots level are trying to prosecute and document what they allege to be Israeli war crimes. Some of them have already filed appeals to their domestic law enforcement to investigate Israeli soldiers who may have committed core international crimes in Gaza. In this episode of Beyond the Headlines, host Nada AlTaher looks at the efforts and challenges of legal mechanisms in delivering justice to Palestinian victims, both on an international scale and in domestic courts. She speaks to former ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo, legal director and founder of the Public Interest Law Centre in the UK Paul Heron, and Israeli historian Lee Mordechai.
