Today on The Literary Life podcast, hosts Angelina Stanford and Thomas Banks wrap up their series on Murder Must Advertise by Dorothy L. Sayers. To begin the conversation, Thomas shares his reaction on finishing this book. Angelina then dives into her discoveries of Alice in Wonderland references throughout all of Sayers' detective books. They talk about how the cricket game relates to the whole story arc, review the descent and parody imagery ideas from last episode, and look at Lord Peter's arrest and its significance in the form of the romance. More topics they cover in these final chapters include the ascent imagery, Tallboy's confession, the act of justice in the detective novel, and how the ending of this book is actually quite fitting. An occasional series on how Britain is fixing its battered foreign relationships. Today: After the combative Tory years, Keir Starmer is trying to reset the Anglo-French connection. What do we want from France and what does Paris want from us? Britain's former Ambassador to France Lord Peter Ricketts talks to Ros Taylor about whether Starmer and Macron are natural allies, the damage caused by Brexit, and what France's “deep unease” with itself means for Britain. • “I would not have relished being Ambassador to France and having my friends ask ‘Poor Britain, what are you doing?'” • “By about 2020-21, things were at rock bottom… When Liz Truss was asked ‘France, friend of foe?' and she replied that the jury was still out.” We are sponsored by Indeed. Acts 10:11-16 “He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners. In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds. Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.” “No, LORD” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.” But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if GOD has made it clean.” The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven.”

Nelson Mandela was the most iconic figure in South African history because of his heroic struggle against apartheid and racism, but he wouldn't have done what he had done if not for the brave leaders who also took the stand against the oppressive establishment in their own ways. Decades before being a Lord in the UK Parliament, Peter Hain was one of those people. A young man at that time, Lord Hain started simply by opposing the all-White South African cricket team. You wouldn't believe just how significant that was unless you heard the whole story. So much has his impact been that he was considered Public Enemy No. 1 by the ruling apartheid government. Decades later, Lord Hain has a powerful message to all world leaders and every one of us who's aspiring for real change in the world. Stay tuned and learn what he has to say!Love the show? fWotD Episode 2471: Dorothy L. Sayers Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 9 February 2024 is Dorothy L. Sayers.Dorothy Leigh Sayers (; 13 June 1893 – 17 December 1957) was an English crime novelist, playwright, translator and critic.Born in Oxford, Sayers was brought up in rural East Anglia and educated at Godolphin School in Salisbury and Somerville College, Oxford, graduating with first class honours in medieval French. She worked as an advertising copywriter between 1922 and 1929 before success as an author brought her financial independence. Her first novel Whose Body? was published in 1923. Between then and 1939 she wrote ten more novels featuring the upper-class amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. In 1930, in Strong Poison, she introduced a leading female character, Harriet Vane, the object of Wimsey's love. Harriet appears sporadically in future novels, resisting Lord Peter's proposals of marriage until Gaudy Night in 1935, six novels later.Sayers moved the genre of detective fiction away from pure puzzles lacking characterisation or depth, and became recognised as one of the four "Queens of Crime" of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction of the 1920s and 1930s, along with Agatha Christie, Margery Allingham and Ngaio Marsh. She was a founder member of the Detection Club, and worked with many of its members in producing novels and radio serials collaboratively, such as the novel The Floating Admiral in 1931.From the mid‐1930s Sayers wrote plays, mostly on religious themes; they were performed in English cathedrals and broadcast by the BBC. Her radio dramatisation of the life of Christ, The Man Born to Be King (1941–42), initially provoked controversy but was quickly recognised as an important work. From the early 1940s her main preoccupation was translating the three books of Dante's Divine Comedy into colloquial English. She died unexpectedly at her home in Essex, aged 64, before completing the third book. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:03 UTC on Friday, 9 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Dorothy L. Former anti-apartheid activist and British Labour Lord Peter Hain says that peace talks are the only way forward in the war between Hamas and Israel. Last week, South Africa launched a case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, alleging that Israel's military campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide. In the 84-page suit, South Africa details evidence of brutality being perpetrated in Gaza and asks the Court which resolves interstate disputes, to urgently declare that Israel has breached its responsibilities under international law since the 7th of October last year. For more on this, Elvis Presslin spoke to Lord Peter Hain.

Network Rail Chairman Peter, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill joins us for his first media interview about Railway 200... and it's a good one! We also discuss news of Alstom's announcement that it is going to start of the process of winding down train building in Derby.

Peter knows that his time on earth is coming to an end, and so he leaves the believers with important reminders that he tells that they will need to always remember. Peter shares about the Day of The Lord, the returning of Jesus Christ. One of my most favorite scriptures Peter wrote in this letter, "The Lord isn't really being slow about His promise, as some people think. No, He is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.Join me as we dive into Peters last letter. And as always we appreciate the support you give our podcast and youtube channel. Strategy is an intensely practical consideration, and in this episode, we examine strategy from the perspective of a practitioner. Lord Peter Ricketts was the UK's first National Security Adviser and joins us to share his experience of strategy-making at the highest levels of government. Lord Ricketts reflects on the difference between crafting a strategic concept for a state or alliance and drawing up a strategy for a conflict or for the management of a major crisis, such as the coronavirus pandemic. His experience in government includes chairing the Joint Intelligence Committee, directing the formulation of the 2010 UK National Security Strategy, as well as holding top diplomatic posts including that of Permanent UK Representative to NATO and the EU, and Ambassador in Paris. Building on his book Hard Choices: What Britain Does Next (Atlantic Books: May 2022), Lord Ricketts explains the strategy-making process, both in the context of particular conflicts – he was involved in government decisions to intervene in Kosovo, Iraq (twice) and Afghanistan, and mainly not to intervene in Syria – and in drawing up a wide-ranging National Security Strategy requiring an inter-ministerial approach. This inside perspective and explanation of processes and obstacles is an invaluable guide for practitioners and students of public policy alike.

We discuss chapters 1-4 of Dorothy L. Sayers first novel in her Lord Peter Wimsey series. A forgetful moment returns Lord Peter home just in time for news of a grizzly death, suited perfectly to his hobby of detection. An unknown man has been found in the bath of Alfred Thipps, naked but for a pair of spectacles. Inspector Sugg, a policeman already disgruntled by Lord Wimsey's previous efforts, pins the crime on Thipps maid, and Wimsey amasses his allies to hunt the real killer. With a delightful and scattered tone, can Herds unravel this curious debut? We're also joined by Yoyu Li, one of the team behind 'Whispers in the West', a cooperative murder mystery video game we played just before its' Kickstarter launched. We talk about the game's development, the link between narrative and game design, and more.

Acts 3:19–21 (NKJV) Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, 20 and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, 21 whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began. • Peter had just been used by God to work a miracle of healing a lame man who was begging at the temple gate• A crowd began to gather because of the miracle that just happened• Peter began to preach to those present about the resurrection of Jesus• Then he called on everyone to repent and be converted• He continued saying (if you do), your sins will be blotted out• Then he prophesied about future events:o Times of refreshing will come from the presence of Godo And, God will send Jesus Christ (2nd Coming of Christ)• Jesus Christ had only just ascended to heaven a short while ago• And as prophesied, He will return to earth to set up His 1,000 year reignActs 3:19 (WUESTNT) Therefore repent at once, instantly changing your attitude, and perform a right-about-face in order that your sins may be obliterated, in order that there may come epoch-making periods of spiritual revival and refreshment from the presence of the Lord … • Peter prophesied times (plural) of spiritual revival and refreshing• Right throughout the church age, there have been periods of spiritual revival and refreshing “from the presence of the Lord”• We call these times:o Revivalso Outpourings of the Spirit of Godo The former and the latter rain of the Spirit The former rain of the Spirit took place on the Day of Pentecost The latter rain is taking place in these last day before the rapture There were periods of intermittent rain for the last 2000 years• When God's people repent of their sins, it always brings times of spiritual revival and refreshing• When times of spiritual revival take place, more people will repent of their sins and get converted • It is interesting, but many Christians are waiting for god to send revival• But God is waiting for His people to repent of their sins• Revivals and times of refreshing are never random acts of God• Revivals and times of refreshing are always in response to God's people repenting of their sins and seeking God for His will for their lives• When John the Baptist came he preached “repentance”• When Jesus first came, He preached “repentance”• When Peter first preached, He preached “repentance” (Acts 2:38, 3:19)• All revival preachers throughout the church age preached “repentance”o John & Charley Wesley – the Great Awakening (AD. 1700's)o Charles Finney - the Second Great Awakening (1800's)2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV) If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. • God says: If My people – those called by My name (Christians)o Will humble themselveso Prayo Seek my face (for His will for their lives)o Turn from their wicked ways (repentance!)• I (God) will:o Hear from heaveno Forgive their sinso Heal their land 1 Peter 4:17 (NKJV) For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?• Jesus Christ wants to cleanse His church of all stains & wrinkles• He is leading His church into new levels of holiness Five sins that prevented Israel from entering the Promised Land1 Corinthians 10:1–11 (NLT) I don't want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters, about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago. All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground. 2 In the cloud and in the sea, all of them were baptized as followers of Moses. 3 All of them ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did, 7 or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.” 8 And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day. 9 Nor should we put Christ to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites. 10 And don't grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death. 11 These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.The five sins were: • Craving evil things (lusting after evil things)• Worship of idols (anything that draws our love away from God)• Engaging in sexual immorality (all sexual activity outside of marriage)• Putting Christ to the test (contention about water. Is God among us?)• Grumbling (murmuring & complaining)Hebrews 12:14 (AMP) Strive to live in peace with everybody and pursue that consecration and holiness without which no one will [ever] see the Lord. Practical things to do: • Cleanse our lives of all things that displease the Lord• Cleanse our homes of all things that displease the Lord• Forgive everyone who has ever hurt or offended us• Choose to walk in love towards everyone• Put God first in our lives (time, talent, treasure)Hebrews 12:1–3 (NKJV) Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. • lay aside every weight• and the sin which so easily ensnares us• run with endurance the race that is set before us• look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith• consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself• lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls

Peter made the mistake of not hearing Jesus when he was foretold of the response he would have to the Lord's arrest and crucifixion. His problem was the expression of what he thought of himself when he spoke contrary to what proceeded from the mouth of the Lord — Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And so said all the disciples. {Matthew 26:35}. The lesson we all can learn from Peters experience is that the word of the Lord stands above our opinion of ourselves. If Peter would have had the discipline to “Hear Him”, he would have agreed with the word of the Lord and sought strength rather than proclaiming strength that he did not poses. Much grief and sorrow could have been avoided. Yet, in all these things, the Lord Jesus expresses His love with an affirming gaze that caused Peter to repent through many tears. No matter our shortcomings, He is faithful to complete the work that He has begun in us, so let's “Hear Him”.

The historian Peter Hennessy asks what we might learn from the experience of another hinge moment: 1945, when an exhausted but victorious Britain launched a new social contract.
