This is the audio from a video we have just published on our YouTube channel – an interview with Tony Smith. To make sure you never miss great content like this, subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/@spiked Record numbers of migrants have arrived illegally on England's south coast this year. Keir Starmer's promise to ‘smash the gangs' of people smugglers has made no notable dent on the small-boats emergency. Meanwhile, deportations of illegal migrants – including those who have committed serious crimes – are routinely blocked in the courts. Here, Tony Smith – former head of the UK Border Force, now managing director at Fortinus Global – explains how Britain lost control of its borders. Human-rights law and international conventions, Tony argues, have been weaponised by an activist judiciary. The result is an asylum policy that no one voted for and that benefits criminals over the genuinely deserving.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hinting he'd temporarily cede territory to Russia – if the whole country's extended an invite to NATO. Former UK Defence Attaché in Moscow John Foreman told Mike Hosking both Ukraine and Russia seem to be trying to influence Donald Trump ahead of him taking office – but Trump's kept his cards close to his chest. He says the only clarity we have is from Trump tapping General Kellogg to serve as special envoy – who wants to delay NATO membership, but offer Ukraine security assurances. Boris Johnson is praising the presidency of his friend and ally Donald Trump. The former British Prime Minister has spoken exclusively to Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking on the eve of the US election, as final polling shows key battleground states could still go either way. Johnson is commending the unpredictability of US democracy, compared with countries like China and Russia. He says he has a good relationship with Kamala Harris, but he disagrees with the public perception of Trump. Johnson says the former president was robust on Syria, Iran, and Russia. He told Hosking that if Trump is a “nutjob”, there is definitely a method to his madness. Johnson says another Donald Trump presidency could ease the war between Russia and Ukraine. He says Trump has opposed aid to Ukraine only to separate himself from political opponents like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. If elected, he says Trump would be stern on Putin and wouldn't allow NATO and the United States to be humiliated. Johnson will be offering more of his insights as the the International Keynote Speaker at a one off “Long Lunch” event in Auckland this December. For more information, click here. Thought-provoking, amusing, self-critical, rich with anecdotes, laced with good advice, and large servings of humility, you might not automatically assume I'm describing the book, titled 'On Leadership', just published and written by Sir Tony Blair. The discussion starts with the essential need for a leader to identify the priorities, to determine the plan, and to pursue its execution. Sir Tony Blair discusses meeting roadblocks and responses, and why the leader must stay resolute. He then opines on international affairs today; including thoughts on China, India, Russia and the Middle East. He covers higher education, lessons from Singapore's ‘economic miracle', and the challenges of immigration. He shares perspectives from the Tony Blair Institute, which today advises over 40 countries, how technology can promote major leaps forward, reasons for optimism, why humility is key and why there's no substitute for hard work! After 14 years of Conservative rule, Britain voted on Thursday for change. But what should the world expect from a Labour government? 2024 is the year of democracy. More people than ever in history will go to the polls - 2 billion in over 60 countries. But it's also a year of rising nationalism. With Europe at war, Trump possibly returning and Labour winning by a landslide, today we bring you an exclusive conversation with former British Foreign Secretary David Miliband. Miliband was one of the key architects of Tony Blair's New Labour. Now as the CEO of the International Rescue Committee in New York, he has a unique perspective on global affairs across 50 countries. David is also part of the Giant Ventures advisory board. To understand what a Labour government will look like, with some predictions for geopolitics and the US election, David joined the FT's Gillian Tett. This was recorded in mid June, before the UK election result and Biden's debate debacle... a week is a long time in politics. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
