For Kneecap's growing fan base, the band's support of Palestine as they performed at the Coachella music festival in California last month didn't raise a ripple of surprise. The Belfast-based rappers who sing mostly in Irish have been consistent in their vocal opposition to Israel's response to the October 7th Hamas attack. But an American backlash coincided with UK police investigations into comments made by members of the group during concerts. One appeared to be shouting “up Hamas, up Hizbullah”.Footage from another concert appeared to show one of the group shouting “the only good Tory is a dead Tory” and “Kill your local MP”.Kneecap have since apologised to the families of two murdered British MPs. But they also insist the controversy has been manufactured in retaliation against their pro-Palestine stance and to distract from the real story of what's happening in Gaza.Media columnist Hugh Linehan looks at the controversies surrounding Kneecap, how they have responded and whether they are right to argue this is not a story worth covering.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Declan Conlon. This episode was edited on May 1, 2025 to remove a reference to Kneecap concerts being cancelled. None of the group's US concerts has been cancelled. Hosted on Acast. Kneecap have apologised to the families of two former British MPs who were murdered in recent years, and said they do not support Hamas or Hezbollah, after videos from past gigs came to the attention of police and politicians. The Belfast rap group released a statement after a video appeared to show a member shouting “up Hamas, up Hezbollah”, while the other appeared to show a member saying: “The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP”.Kneecap took the opportunity to also criticise what they describe as a “smear campaign” against them over their support for Palestine. They wrote: “Establishment figures, desperate to silence us, have combed through hundreds of hours of footage and interviews, extracting a handful of words from months or years ago to manufacture moral hysteria”.What are your thoughts on this? To bring in the new year, we have a special Conflicted Community episode this week– an interview with none other than Tom Tugendhat, a Conservative British MP and ex Minister of State for Security.  Tom is a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a veteran of both Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak's Conservative cabinets. He remains a big figure in the party, having run unsuccessfully for party leader in 2024, and is one of the most outspoken of all British MPs when it comes to the UK's security policy. But most importantly, Tom is a long time dearest listener, friend of Aimen's and fan of the show, so we invited him on to discuss himself, his time in government and his thoughts on the current crises engulfing the Middle East.  In this episode Thomas, Aimen and Tom discuss Tom's background, including some of his formative years spent in the Middle East, as well as his thoughts on the scourge of Islamism in the region and the West, before looking at how effective security policy can be enacted by the West as a new world order takes shape. Welcome to 'The Week According To' where we invite a guest to give their thoughts on some of the talking points and headlines, from the tabloids and across social media over the past 7 days. This episode features Lembit Öpik discussing political and social issues in the UK and beyond. The conversation begins with the case of pro-life activist Isabel Vaughan Spruce, who received a police payout after a wrongful arrest for silent prayer, raising concerns about free speech. Lembit critiques proposed hate crime legislation on misogyny, arguing it could unjustly target individuals while misandry rises. The discussion also touches on Kamala Harris's political challenges in the US and the controversial Operation Early Dawn in the UK, emphasizing government overreach and judicial disparities. Lembit warns of potential societal fractures if current trends continue, calling for accountability and a return to sensible governance. Born in Northern Ireland in 1965 to Estonian parents, Lembit Öpik studied Economics, then Philosophy at Bristol University. In 1988, He joined multi-national firm Procter & Gamble in Advertising, rising to Global Human Resources Training & Development Manager for the 112,000 staff. Lembit also chairs the world's only Digital Parliament – Asgardia, the first ‘space nation.' An intense liberatarian, Lembit regards increasing societal pressure to conform as the ‘potential end of reason.' He regards the ‘climate emergency' mantra as a ‘free speech emergency,' where vested interests oppress scientific rigour: ‘They've the right to be wrong, but they've no right to silence other people who are right.' We roll out the red carpet for the return of the freedom fighter and football legend Matt Le Tissier to give his thoughts on some of the headlines and talking points from the news, social media and from across the web. Plenty for Matt and Peter to get their teeth stuck into including... - How many more before you investigate? 3 footballers collapse on live TV in one week. - Vile Irish PM Leo Varadkar jumps off the sinking Irish coalition ship. - Amish Officially Declared ‘World's Healthiest Children' After Rejecting Big Pharma Vaccines. - Fury as Nike adds a ultra-woke 'Playful Update' and changes colours of the on St George's cross England shirts. - Chair of Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority gets quizzed on why she agrees her force is ‘institutionally racist'. - "We need to protect their innocence and childhood" British MP speaks sense on sex education. - Network Rail removes Islamic message on King's Cross display boards after fierce criticism. - Clown World News: Sunbathing for just one day ‘increases your risk of killer heart disease and wrecks your immune system. Matt Le Tissier is a bona fide football legend, often described as one of the most naturally talented players of his time, the man that south coast residents call ‘Le God' and one of the most famous soccer stars of the 1990's. Matt joined Southampton FC on the YTS scheme in 1985, signed professional forms with them the following year at 16 years of age and for the next 16 years he put loyalty above riches and remained at the club. A hero to his fans for his creativity, he was the first midfielder to score 100 goals in the Premier League and Matt's penalty taking abilities were renowned, converting 47 out of 48 from the spot. Then for 15 years he was on our TV screens every week on Sky Sports giving his commentary on the Premier League football matches. This all came to a screeching halt when he tweeted his thoughts on the Ukraine/Russia conflict, refused to wear a badge on-air of an organisation he had no interest in being associated with and also retweeting a post that questioned the government line on COVID. These actions were apparently outside the accepted new-speak and for these crimes he was sacked. Connect with 'Le God'... It's Casual Friday! Emma is joined by Noah Kulwin, co-host of the Blowback podcast, to round up a chaotic week in news. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's impossible order to Gazans, rising death numbers, and continuing war crimes, as well as the US reneging on Iran, Bob Menendez's corruption, labor action, climate change, and more, before parsing through the explicitly genocidal rhetoric coming from the top of Israeli and US politics. Noah Kulwin then parses through Israel's ongoing siege of Gaza, including an impossible evacuation order, the complete lack of symmetry in the Israel-Palestine relationship, and the total control of Israel's apartheid system. After touching on Israel's knowledge of an impending attack, Noah and Emma discuss the severe (and unsurprising) failure of Israel's attempt to beat Palestine into submission, before wrapping up with the dramatic double standards for pro-Palestine and pro-Israel stances in the media. Emma concludes the free half with a quick update on the rise and fall of the theoretical nomination of Steve Scalise to House Speakership, and the increasing bad blood within the GOP. And in the Fun Half: Emma watches British journalist Owen Jones attempt to fend off a British MP's relentless apartheid apologia, looks back on Noam Chomsky's statements on the asymmetry of Israel-Palestine relations, and talks with Ulysses from Cincinnati about a new outsider candidate in the 2024 election. El from Toronto explores the role of conscription in Israel's project of genocide, Karine Jean-Pierre calls anti-genocide rhetoric “repugnant” on behalf of Joe Biden, and Nathan from the South East discusses his perspective on the troubled teen industry.
