Ben Davison looks at Labor's moves to scrap the cashless debit card, end the outsourcing of Centrelink call centres and lift the minimum wage while acknowledging National reconciliation week and Mabo Day. Insider's had National Party leader David Littleproud on who expressed "no regrets" over the policies of the last decade of Liberal-National misrule, lied about Labor's efforts to fix the energy crisis and doubled down on the Morrison era policy of supporting multi-national gas companies over the needs of the Australian people. There's also a quick look at the rogues gallery that's likely to be the shadow ministry under Dutton. Ben breaks down the reality of the gas situation (we export too much), the economic situation (too much is going to profits instead of wages) and the work unions are doing to fix it (taking action across the country). NSW workers are suffering under a wage cap and are holding a summit on how to make the Liberal government lift the cap, which is costing workers more than $6,000 a year. Australian unions are getting wins, with Labor pushing for a proper increase in the minimum wage, and new ads showing the power of sticking together in wage negotiations. Join at australianunions.org.au/wow Ben also thanks all the supporters, who contributed at www.buymeacoffee.com/weekonwednesday, for helping the podcast reach almost 50,000 downloads just in May.

Mabo Day commemorates Torres Strait Islander Eddie Koiki Mabo and his role in overturning the “terra nullius” declaration - which claimed that Australia was once land belonging to no-one. For two centuries, the British and then white Australians operated under a fallacy, that somehow Aboriginal people did not exist or have land rights before the first settlers arrived in 1788. Kulasegaram Sanchayan presents the man who changed that - Eddie Koiki Mabo.

A very auspicious time for Indigenous communities all around Australia - National Sorry Day on May 26, followed by National Reconciliation Week, and ending with Mabo Day on June 3, the commemoration of Eddie Mabo and the campaign leading to the 1992 landmark decision of the High Court overturning the legal fiction of terra nullius. Making sense of any idea of commemoration, or indeed, any idea of community leads inevitably to the tangible and intangible domain of language – how it’s used, how it embodies special cultural knowledge, and how it survives.Project officer with First Languages Australia, Annalee Pope, outlines her involvement with the Priority Languages Documentation initiative, and explains some of the ways that renewed interest in Indigenous languages is taking shape all across the country. And, Indigenous writer and researcher Bruce Pascoe talks about first languages in we now know as the state of Victoria, and explains the intersections of Indigenous language, forms of governance and sustainability.

Wednesday June 3rd is Mabo Day and, much to the glee of Abbott and his ilk, it's becoming less and less significant in this country. On the 3rd June 1992, the High Court delivered a historic judgement that recognised that aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people had a right to land claim due to prior occupation. Only took 204 years. The consternation of the landed gentry was palpable and ignorant Aussies thought their back yards would be camped upon by indigenous Australians. Let's celebrate Mabo Day!
