Our Summer in the Cities tour hits Austin, where humid nights, neon-lit bars, and guitar solos spilling out of every doorway create a sound that is rootsy, rebellious, and relentlessly forward looking. From country soul divorce tales to genre bending blues epics, Don and Dude drop the needle on two records that pin Austin's independent spirit, musical diversity, and guitar obsessed heart to wax.The AlbumsWillie Nelson – Phases and Stages (1974)Phases and Stages finds Willie Nelson breaking from Nashville convention with a focused, empathetic divorce concept album that follows both the wife and husband through heartbreak, barroom coping, and hard won acceptance, all tied together by a recurring “phases and stages” theme. Warm Muscle Shoals grooves, unfussy arrangements, and Willie's conversational storytelling turn everyday moments like washing dishes, hanging at the corner beer joint, and nursing a Bloody Mary morning into a fully realized Texas breakup saga that feels as much Austin outlaw as it does country soul short story.Gary Clark Jr. – Blak and Blu (2012)Blak and Blu introduces Gary Clark Jr. as a modern Austin guitar hero who refuses to stay in one lane, blending Texas blues, fuzzed out rock, soul, RB, funk, and hip hop tinged production into a bold, genre fluid statement. From the brassy swagger of “Ain't Messin 'Round” and the fuzz drone of “Bright Lights” to the tender soul of “You Saved Me” and the stripped back “Next Door Neighbor Blues,” the record stretches blues tradition into the 21st century without losing its grit or its roots.Diggin' AlbumsViolet Grohl – Be Sweet To Me (2026)Moody alt rock that mixes 90s style guitar crunch with dreamy, emotionally raw songs.Quiet Riot – Metal Health (1983)Big hook early MTV metal packed with shout along choruses and head banging riffs.Doublespeak – Doublespeak (2026)Synth driven covers project that turns cult favorites into lush, modern electronic pop.Peter Frampton – Carry the Light (2026)Melodic late career rock set that pairs Frampton's signature guitar with reflective, guest studded songs.Follow & SupportFollow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support the podcast by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing it with another music obsessive who still loves hearing whole albums front to back.“There's so much energy in Austin, it's kind of the kernel of where all this music came from.” – Dave Grohl

In this Best Of episode, I revisit some of the most powerful moments from my yarn with Nooky — a conversation that moves between music, culture, grief, and survival. We reflect on the making of his album with 3%, including the collaborations that shaped it and the intention behind centring cultural history and awareness. The iconic album artwork featuring Nicky Winmar stands as a defining moment in the discussion — a symbol of resistance, strength, and truth-telling in the face of racism. Nooky also speaks candidly about his personal journey through grief and addiction, and how community became central to his healing. His commitment to creating space for mob is evident through initiatives like We Are Warriors and his film trilogy centred on the black cockatoo — stories grounded in mentorship, culture, and passing knowledge to the next generation. We also touch on friendship, connection, and shared cultural spaces, including his relationship with The Kid Laroi, highlighting how community and identity continue to shape Indigenous voices in music. This Best Of yarn is a reminder of the power of storytelling — and how resilience, culture, and music can be tools for change, advocacy, and collective strength. Blak had a lot to discuss starting with his departure from Dead Wrong Records after a long run on the label. This decision came with the start of a new chapter, joining a new label with a fellow collaborator and releasing his latest body of work “What We On?”, an EP that dropped on his birthday back in September. This has also come with new opportunities seeing him perform his first show outside of Philadelphia, the chance for radio play and more plans to spread his footprint as an artist to different cities around the country. It was great to hear the excitement and positive energy Blak is carrying into this new stage of his journey and his 2026 is definitely looking bright! Actor and author Tasma Walton was enjoying her big break on TV show Blue Heelers in the 1990s in Melbourne when a transformative visit from her grandmother launched her in a new direction.Boonwurrung/Bunurong woman, Tasma grew up in windy Geraldton, in Western Australia in the 1970s, hearing stories from her grandmother about baby whales and women who lived in kelp forests. These stories always featured a bay and very cold water — neither of which were in Geraldton. Many years later, while Tasma was filming Blue Heelers and living in St Kilda in Melbourne, her grandmother came to stay, and the stories she had told Tasma over and over again started to make sense.Except for one tale that had been sanitised for children's ears — a supposed love story between Tasma's great-great-great grandmother, Nannertgarrook, and a sealer man.As an adult, Tasma heard her calling and started to research the truth of what had happened to Nannertgarrook, generations ago.Further informationIf you need help, you can call the National domestic family and sexual violence counselling service on 1800-RESPECT — 1800 737 732.I Am Nannertgarrook is published by Simon & Schuster Bundyi.Tasma was named joint winner, with Robbie Arnott, of the $100,000 ARA Historical Novel Prize for 2025.Watch Reckless on SBS from Wednesday 12 November on SBS, NITV, and SBS ON DEMAND.This episode of Conversations was produced by Alice Moldovan.
