Welcome to a special summer episode of Material Matters. With listeners going on holiday and looking for something to read, rather than investigate a material it seemed like a good idea to talk about a new book instead. Robin Givhan is the Washington Post's senior critic-at-large, writing about politics, race and the arts. She won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2006 and is the author of The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History. Her latest book is entitled Make It Ours: Crashing the Gates of Culture with Virgil Abloh, which charts the life of the late designer from his childhood in Rockford, Illinois to his position as artistic director at Louis Vuitton menswear collection in Paris, the first black person to serve in that role in the brand's 164-year history. It also illustrates the profound changes that occurred in the luxury fashion industry over his short but fascinating career. In this episode, we talk about: why fashion matters; the role of the critic; Virgil Abloh's ‘confounding' qualities; how he created an extraordinary community; his imprint on fashion; how the world of luxury shifted around him; being the ‘ultimate non-perfectionist'; his controversial 3 per cent philosophy; judging value; craft and luxury; why the designer was ‘the right kind of Black man'; a pivotal relationship with rapper and producer Kanye West; the importance of T shirts; how Abloh became artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear collection; his tragic death; and his legacy. In this powerful episode of Nurses Uncorked, Nurse Erica sits down with legendary nurse educator and activist Dr. Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio RN, PhD for an unfiltered conversation about nursing, activism, and legacy. Laura opens up about her turbulent exit from the bedside during the early days of the pandemic, the harsh reality of workplace retaliation, and how she fought back when most nurses felt silenced. She discusses her inspiring education journey from ADN to PhD, the controversy around use of the title "Doctor" as a nurse, and why she refused to teach virtually during COVID. Laura also reflects on the seismic shifts in nursing culture over the last 30 years and the barriers that still prevent nurses from advocating for themselves. We revisit the iconic 1995 nurse march on Washington DC, which Laura organized before the internet era—mobilizing over 35,000 nurses to demand better staffing ratios and workplace protections. She details how it felt to stand on the Capitol steps as the voice of an entire profession. Laura also weighs in on the failed 2022 National Nurses March, offering a candid look at why it fell short and what the future of nursing activism requires. From unionization to continuing education, and the mass exodus of new nurses, this episode is a must-watch for anyone passionate about the profession. #truecrime #callherdaddy #activist Sponsors: Thank you to our sponsor, Stink Balm Odor Blocker! In the early ‘80s, The Police guitarist Andy Summers and King Crimson mastermind Robert Fripp formed an unexpected partnership—blending avant-garde progressive rock with stadium-ready new wave. Despite their vastly different styles, the duo released I Advance Masked (1982) and Bewitched (1984), crafting intricate soundscapes that pushed musical boundaries. Surprisingly, Summers wasn't even a King Crimson fan when they first collaborated. In a recent Guitarist interview, he revealed that he and Fripp had a “cosmic connection” dating back to their teenage years in England. Their journey—from crossing paths in local music scenes to creating two groundbreaking albums—remains one of rock's most fascinating stories. Now, previously unheard recordings from their sessions have surfaced in Mother Hold the Candle Steady, part of the Complete Recordings reissue. Summers admits he was “knocked out” revisiting these lost tracks, questioning why they were left behind in the first place. In this video, we explore how this unique collaboration came to life, why it still resonates, and how their experimental approach influenced generations of guitarists. Plus, we dive into the latest discussions surrounding Fripp, King Crimson, and the ongoing legacy of progressive rock.

Pennsylvania has graced the world with an inordinate number of influential women throughout its history but looking with a sharper lens at four women in particular highlights not just their achievements, but also key trends in the U.S. and Pennsylvania in the 1800’s. Dr. Christine Senecal, Medieval Historian, shared some of the most important women from Pennsylvania whose lives made a positive impact on the world today. Mary Cassatt was the only American to exhibit alongside the French Impressionists in France. Cassatt’s artwork was very radical for her time, that is still celebrated to this day. “So, she did many pictures and paintings of women with children, and while that had been a pretty common scene in art, like Renoir did a lot of that, he was an imperious artist, she tended to focus on women, the labor that women did in care taking. So, if you look at a Renoir and you look at, um, like the women with the children, they're both smiling, sort of smiling for the camera, so to speak. Mary Cassatt's women are like tending to the children. And there's a lot of love and affection in her paintings, but also it shows women working. Moreover, there's pictures of women, many women, looking intently at things.” Nellie Bly was an investigative journalist who was known for her undercover reporting on a mental asylum, her trip around the world, and her advocacy for women’s rights. “She would throw herself into some news, a kind of important journalistic story. The most infamous or famous of this is a piece she wrote called Ten Days in the Madhouse. Off of the coast of New York, Manhattan, there's an island, it's an island that's now called Roosevelt Island and there was a woman's lunatic asylum, and it was supposed to be really corrupt. Nellie Bly got herself into the asylum. She did it by like going overnight, like she didn't let herself sleep. And so, she looked all crazy. And she checked herself into a kind of like dormitory to get into it and acted really crazy. Once she was in, she was eventually accepted into the woman's lunatic asylum. She was, you know, able to really record the horrible abuses and broke the story.” Listen to the podcast to hear about Union Organizer Fannie Sellins, and abolitionist Sarah Mapps Douglass.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sitting down with hip hop legend Sway Calloway, I was eager to dive into his origin story and the pivotal moments that led him to become the iconic radio and TV broadcaster he is today. Sway takes me back to his early days hustling as an aspiring rapper alongside his high school friend and producer King Tech in Oakland. They faced obstacle after obstacle trying to get their music out there - but Sway was determined, resourceful and brimming with belief in his talents. He talks about the hustler spirit instilled in him, pressing up their own tapes and vinyl to sell just to be heard. I'm inspired when he shares the creative ways they pushed forward independently, before later getting a sobering glimpse of the major label machine. Sway saw gaps in the industry and rather than feel deterred, he found ways to educate himself and forge his own path. The conversation shifts as Sway traces his transition from aspiring rapper to pioneering host of the nationally-syndicated Wake Up Show on radio and later TV. He understood the power of delivering authentic information through a mainstream platform. Ultimately it's Sway's connection with people that propelled him into legend status. Though much of his fascinating story remains untold, Sway leaves me with some hard-earned wisdom about longevity in this industry. He embodies the resilience, vision and creativity that it takes to succeed on your own terms. His journey is a testament that persistence and authenticity ultimately win. I'm grateful to call him friend, role model and consequence of the hustler spirit. https://www.youtube.com/live/qowvTjMPyGc?si=nwSTUA-EGA5MD8L3 The Story of 1984: How Van Halen's Biggest Album Became a Rock Masterpiece When Eddie Van Halen first introduced Jump to the band, the reaction was far from enthusiastic. David Lee Roth, in particular, balked, arguing that Eddie was a guitar hero, not a keyboard player. However, producer Ted Templeman immediately recognized its potential, calling it a “stone-cold hit.” That moment of skepticism turned to triumph as Jump became Van Halen's only #1 hit, propelling their 1984 album into rock history. 1984 wasn't just another album—it was Van Halen's magnum opus. Released in a year symbolized by George Orwell's dystopian novel, the album instead became the soundtrack to a carefree, hedonistic era. Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking blend of guitar mastery and keyboard innovation defined the album, which dominated charts, airwaves, and hearts. The Legacy of 1984 A commercial juggernaut, 1984 earned RIAA Diamond certification for selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. alone. It remains one of the best-selling rock albums of the 1980s, rivaled in the band's catalog only by their 1978 debut. Its tight 33-minute runtime delivered four charting singles: Jump (#1), Panama (#13), I'll Wait (#13), and Hot for Teacher (#56). Even deep cuts like Top Jimmy, Drop Dead Legs, and House of Pain showcased the band's fiery creativity. The album opened with 1984, an instrumental synth piece that set the tone for Eddie's vision of a brave new world. This wasn't just an album—it was a statement. The Road to Stardom By the early 1980s, Van Halen was already a top touring act. Their 1982 Hide Your Sheep tour sold out all 83 North American dates, and their South American debut introduced them to thousands of new fans. In 1983, their headline performance at the US Festival's Heavy Metal Day drew 375,000 fans and set a record with a $1.5 million payday. Eddie's growing celebrity status elevated the band further. His marriage to actress Valerie Bertinelli brought Van Halen into mainstream households, while his iconic guitar solo on Michael Jackson's Beat It created an unexpected crossover between rock, pop, and R&B. Building 1984 Frustrated by the rushed recording of Diver Down and its reliance on cover songs, Eddie sought more control. He built a home studio, 5150, named after the California police code for a mentally disordered person. With engineer Donn Landee, Eddie created a space where he could experiment on his terms. The 5150 studio became the birthplace of 1984. Eddie's fascination with keyboards took center stage, especially with the Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer. While synths had appeared on earlier Van Halen albums, they were often disguised as distorted guitars. On 1984, tracks like Jump and I'll Wait embraced their synth-driven identity while maintaining the band's hard rock roots. Eddie's guitar innovations also shone brightly. He used a rare 1958 Gibson Flying V for tracks like Hot for Teacher and Drop Dead Legs, while Steve Ripley's stereo guitars added unique textures to songs like Top Jimmy. The album balanced pop hooks with progressive rock influences, showcasing Eddie's genius. The Breakthrough and the Fallout When 1984 was released, Van Halen had reached their peak. The album's success was undeniable, but tensions within the band were rising. Eddie's increasing control over the creative process clashed with Roth's vision. While 1984 cemented their place as rock icons, it also foreshadowed Roth's departure and the end of Van Halen's original lineup. A Masterpiece That Endures Four decades later, 1984 remains a defining moment in rock history. It's a testament to Eddie Van Halen's relentless innovation and the band's ability to push boundaries. From the infectious synth riff of Jump to the hard-hitting grooves of Panama and Hot for Teacher, the album captures a band at their peak—fearless, ambitious, and unforgettable.

Today, Emily features a conversation with writer and art historian Bridget Quinn. She shares her journey of discovering Adelaide's work, her challenges in a male-dominated Royal Academy, and her rivalry with Marie Antoinette's painter, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun. The episode also includes an exploration of how art and letters were used to reconstruct Adelaide's story and a touching discussion of how Bridget's own experiences shaped her writing. This episode highlights essential themes of art, feminism, rivalry, and the force of Adelaide's will against significant odds.About Author Bridget Quinn:Bridget Quinn is author of the books She Votes: How U.S. Women Won Suffrage, and What Happened Next, an Amazon Editors' pick for Best History books 2020, and the award-winning Broad Strokes: 15 Women Who Made Art and Made History (in That Order), an Amazon pick for Best Art & Photography Books 2017 and a 2018 Amelia Bloomer List selection of recommended feminist literature from the American Library Association.
