During the summer of 1924, a team of gold seekers alleged that they were attacked by giant, ape-like creatures, measuring about 7 feet tall, who hurled boulders at them. Their story recounts an encounter with these beings in a remote area, where a member of their group shot at one of the creatures, hitting it thrice, resulting in it falling off a cliff into an unreachable canyon. Allegedly, these ape-like entities retaliated later by pelting their cabin with sizable rocks and leaving behind enormous footprints, in a series of events now remembered as the Ape Canyon incident.  The story of the Ape Canyon incident remains  one of the most well known stories in the history of Sasquatch studies, as well as one of its most controversial... but now, additional evidence may help corroborate it. Joining us in this episode is a return guest, researcher Marc Myrsell, along with Braden and Jared  Mitchell, two of the descendants of one of the miners who lived through the incredible experience on Mt. In 1924, a group of miners who had been prospecting near the southeast shoulder of Mount St. Helens, Washington, returned from the wilderness with a hair-raising story. The men claimed they had been attacked by "apemen", who bombarded their remote cabin with stones after firing their weapons at one of the creatures. Known today as the Ape Canyon incident, it is regarded by some as one of the earliest widely-publicized stories in American newspapers involving what would become known as Sasquatch or Bigfoot in the years that followed.  There is no researcher who has looked more deeply into the history of the incident at Ape Canyon than Marc Myrsell, a land surveyor and researcher who has compiled an impressive amount of information about the story, having interviewed living witnesses and even located the site of the cabin where the miners were purportedly attacked. John A. Bindernagel (born 1941 - January 18, 2018) was a wildlife biologist who sought evidence for Bigfoot since 1963. He published a book in 1998 entitled North America's Great Ape: the Sasquatch. Bindernagel grew up in Ontario, attended the University of Guelph, and received a PhD in Biology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He moved to British Columbia in 1975, largely because the region was a hot spot for Bigfoot sightings. I have invited many friends of the Doc to come on and talk about what John meant to them, and share their memories of him. I will also be playing some clips of past shows with John. Tonight I will be joined by Bob Gimlin, Russell Acord, Derek Randles, Ron Morehead, Paul Graves, Marc Myrsell, Thomas Sewid, Rictor Riolo, Shane Corson, and Todd and Diane Neiss. In SW Oregon over the course of 30 years, miners and hunters had numerous sightings and at times violent encounters with large, hair covered creatures in the hills, above Port Orford, resulting in the methodical killing of four men, whose murders are still unsolved. Marc will be analyzing the 1924 Ape Canyon, the Thompson Flat Monster Projects and the Butchertown Murders (1875-1905) to discuss historical document and field research techniques that are used for in-depth, detailed investigation of long standing episodes of the unexplained. In SW Oregon over the course of 30 years, miners and hunters had numerous sightings and at times violent encounters with large, hair covered creatures in the hills, above Port Orford, resulting in the methodical killing of four men, whose murders are still unsolved. Marc has done extensive work and study on such events and encounters as the 1924 Ape Canyon event, the Thompson Flat Monster, and the Butchertown Murders (1875-1905). Having spent his life researching and writing on unexplained historical events, he began in earnest with a fresh investigation of the 1924 Ape Canyon attack, culminating in the discovery of the actual cabin site in 2013, where the events took place. A native of Scotland, Shane Corson, has had an interest in crytids since his youth. Fate brought him to Oregon where he dove head first into the subject of Bigfoot. His 2013 sighting in the Mt. Hood National Forest served to deepen the passion of his pursuit. Shane is a core member of both The Olympic Project (www.olympicproject.com) and the TFRG as well as a member of Bigfootology.
