Cattle & Agriculture Industry News Former USDA Counsel Named Deputy Ag Secretary A veteran of the first Trump administration's agriculture team has been named to be deputy secretary of the USDA. President-elect Donald Trump announced his nomination of Stephen Vaden to be deputy under Brooke Rollins, a former think tank executive already tapped to head the USDA. A Yale law graduate, Vaden served as USDA general counsel from 2018-2020, when he was confirmed to a judicial appointment on the U.S. Court of International Trade. He has served as a board member of the Commodity Credit Corp. CDC Confirms Nations First Severe H5N1 Infection Of Human A patient in Louisiana was hospitalized with a severe case of avian influenza (H5N1), marking the first instance in the United States of severe illness linked to the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today in a news release and press call. CDC said the Louisiana patient, one of 61 human cases to occur in the United States since April, was infected with a D1.1 virus recently detected in wild birds and poultry in the U.S. and in recent human cases in British Columbia, Canada, and in the state of Washington. Officials noted the D1.1 strain of H5N1 is different from the B3.13 genotype detected in dairy cows, sporadic human cases in multiple states, and some poultry outbreaks in the U.S. No person-to-person spread of H5 bird flu has been detected. California State Of Emergency, New Human Infections, Canadian Struggles all due to H5N1 Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency in an effort to streamline the Golden State's response to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Several California agencies have developed coordinated responses to address and minimize farm worker exposures, lower raw dairy product contamination and mitigate the spread of the virus, the governor said in a statement: He said “This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak.” About 680 dairy farms are under quarantine from HPAI outbreaks, while 6.2 million birds have been hit and 36 people infected across California. A commercial poultry worker in northwest Iowa is now the first confirmed human case of HPAI in the Hawkeye State, according to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS). An estimated 6.7 million birds have been affected in more than a dozen counties across Iowa, according to USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that more than 13.9 million birds have been impacted by HPAI in the most recent tally of the spread of H5N1 infections across nine provinces. British Columbia is reporting the highest number of HPAI cases among 8.3 million birds. New Brunswick has the lowest number of birds affected by avian influenza with fewer than 100 birds at two locations being confirmed with the virus. Beef Processor Fined For Odor Violations The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) fined STX Beef Company $200,000 for violations linked to foul odors coming from its Corpus Christi facility, according to a local report. The penalty follows years of complaints about smells traced to cattle processing and wastewater management issues. TCEQ also cited equipment failures, inadequate scrubber systems and poor recordkeeping. Of the fine, $2,000 is already paid, with $40,000 due soon. Over $80,000 will support Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's AutoCheck program, addressing regional vehicle emissions. The company has 30 days to submit an odor control plan, including equipment repairs and new systems, and must comply with air quality rules for five years. Corporate Transparency Act Reporting Requirement Will Return Due to Court Ruling Producers pay attention now. The Corporate Transparency Act filing requirements are back in effect following a court decision that reverses the injunction that previously halted this mandate. NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs Kent Bacus said that The Corporate Transparency Act requires millions of family farmers and ranchers to file complex paperwork and disclose beneficial ownership information with the federal government under penalty of severe fines and jail time. Earlier last week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals lifted a nationwide preliminary injunction on the enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act, holding that the government is likely to prevail in a constitutional challenge. This decision places many small businesses in jeopardy that have not yet filed Beneficial Ownership Information with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In light of the Fifth Circuit's decision, FinCEN announced it will delay enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act until January 13, 2025. It is highly recommended to visit with your accountant, tax professionals, and or attorneys on exactly what needs to be filled and where. In this episode we bring you the strange story of Kimberly Sue Doss, who, at the age of 14, vanished whilst travelling home to her mother in Houston, Texas. Her disappearance is a mystery that has plagued her loved ones for over forty years. Kimberly's parents were separated and she split her time between Texas and Iowa. Uprooting her life several times a year was putting a strain on her relationships so, one day in February, 1980, she ran away from home. Kimberly said she was getting a ride to school but instead, she took a bus to Davenport, where her father resided. In all truth, she preferred living in Houston but her closest friends, as well as her boyfriend, were in the Hawkeye State. Before long however, Kimberly grew tired of life as a runaway and contacted her mother, telling her she was coming back. The last time anyone heard from her, was a phone call explaining that she had met a girl named Kathy on the bus and would be staying with her during her stopover in Chicago. Kimberly never made it home. This episode hears from Kimberly's sister Schelly, who explains the devastating impact her younger sibling's absence has had on her family. She takes us through the wild theories that erupted in the wake of Kimberly's disappearance, such as the suggestion that she was now living as a prostitute on Hollywood Boulevard and explains how the authorities mismanagement of missing person databases, impeded the search for her sister. Iowa state representative J.D. Scholten joins the boys to talk about growing up the Hawkeye State's only Brad Radke fan, getting back on the mound for the Sioux City Explorers (and how he has a gigantic plush Minion to thank), sending his cap to Cooperstown, working with Major League Baseball to end blackouts and, yeah, that bus fire.
Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa. We're hopeful that this track lives up to that famous phrase. We start this week's ep by taking a quick victory lap since Sonoma treated us to some nice wine and our first winning weekend since April. Making up for all the lost bets in May, and then some! We go over what went well in that race. Then we move to Iowa Speedway with the first EVER race for the NASCAR Cup Series at this track. We break down what that means, go over any news and notes for this track, and different ways we can try and find data and identify value on various bets. After that we breakdown the outright market and discuss the Manufacturers pick this week. Then get into some Finishing Position picks, including a Over/Under pick from Caesars. Finally we wrap up with some matchups, and a Team Bet that will certainly be very entertaining this week. Hoping to come out of the cornfields with some coins!
Patrick Vint breaks down last years Iowa gambling scandal.
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.splitzoneduo.comIt was huge college sports news in 2023 when dozens of athletes at Iowa and Iowa State became the targets of a state investigation into underage sports betting and wagers originating from the two campuses. It was less big news when enormous problems with that investigation came to light and the case started to fall apart. On this episode, Iowa writer and attorney Patrick Vint of Hawkeye State joins Alex to discuss how (and why) Iowa law enforcement made itself into an NCAA investigatory arm, how the NCAA handled the information brought to it, and how we can think about a hugely problematic investigative process that still revealed legitimate issues. Production: Anthony Vito.Read Patrick's feature on the case: https://hawkeyestate.substack.com/p/heads-will-roll

Dan talks with Josh Stearns, the senior director of the Public Square Program at Democracy Fund. The Democracy Fund is an independent foundation that works for something very basic and increasingly important: to ensure that our political system is able to withstand new challenges. Josh leads the foundation's work rebuilding local news. The Democracy Fund supports media leaders, defends press freedom, and holds social media platforms accountable. (Ellen was stuck in traffic somewhere on the Zakim Bridge in Boston for the duration of this show, but she'll return next episode!) In our Quick Takes, Dan poaches in Ellen's territory and reports on a development in Iowa, the Hawkeye State. When two local weekly newspapers near Iowa City recently got into trouble, their owner found an unusual buyer: The Daily Iowan, the independent nonprofit student newspaper. Now there are plans to supplement local coverage with contributions from student journalists. It's not something Dan would like to see everywhere — after all, we want to make sure there are jobs for student journalists after they graduate. But at least in this case, it sounds like the Iowa solution is going to be good for the weekly papers, good for the students and good for the communities they serve.

Iowa baseball chronologist Steve Dunn ("'Pug,' 'Fireball,' and Company: 116 Years of Professional Baseball in Des Moines, Iowa") joins for a surprisingly rich journey into the history of professional baseball in the Hawkeye State's largest city - currently home to the Diamond Baseball Holdings-owned Triple-A affiliate of the National League's Chicago Cubs. Besides today's Iowa Cubs, the city of Des Moines has been home to minor league baseball in various forms since 1887 - featuring a long list of stars that have played or managed clubs there, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Feller, Satchel Paige, Red Faber, Buck O'Neil, Ryne Sandberg, Tony LaRussa, Charlie Grimm, and Stan Hack. Dunn walks us through some of Des Moines baseball's most noteworthy ballparks (such as Western League Park, home of the first night game featuring a permanent lighting system on 5/2/1930); circuits (like the long-forgotten Three–I [Class B] League featuring the reborn 1959-61 Des Moines Demons); barnstormers (the Negro League "All Nations" club); and eyebrow-raising team names - from Midgets to Prohibitionists to Undertakers. + + + SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.royalretros.com/?aff=2 BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: 'Pug,' 'Fireball,' and Company: 116 Years of Professional Baseball in Des Moines, Iowa (2023): https://amzn.to/4bqMApS FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable
Former President Donald Trump aims to replicate his success in Iowa at the New Hampshire primary in a few days. After coming in third in the Hawkeye State, Nikki Haley has been campaigning hard in New Hampshire, looking to assert herself as a strong second to the former President. Despite polling in the single digits, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has decided to skip the state entirely and head to South Carolina to shore up his voter support. FOX News Sunday anchor Shannon Bream joins the Rundown to preview the upcoming contest and break down the latest from the Supreme Court. Polling shows the majority of Americans have little enthusiasm for a Biden-Trump rematch in 2024, and the No Labels Party believes this leaves a lane for them to challenge the status quo with a third-party run. As they search for candidates for a “Unity ticket” in 2024, they have faced severe difficulties getting on the ballot. They allege these roadblocks are part of a racketeering conspiracy and have called on the U.S. Justice Department to investigate. Former Governor of North Carolina and now national co-chair of the No Labels Party, Pat McCrory, joins the podcast to discuss their organization's plan to appeal to American moderates who want an alternative, the opposition they've faced getting on the ballot, and what kind of candidates they want for their “Unity ticket.” Don't miss the good news with Tonya J. The one county that did not go for Trump was Johnson County, where former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley led Trump by one vote with 99% of votes counted. Haley received 1,271 votes, approximately 35.5% of the vote in Johnson County, while Trump received 1,270 votes, according to GOP officials in the state. Haley finished third statewide behind Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Trump pulled in a majority of votes with 51%. Haley claimed her third-place finish was evidence of momentum when considering polling numbers in upcoming primary states. "When you look at how well we’re doing in New Hampshire, in South Carolina and beyond, I can safely say tonight Iowa made this Republican primary a two-person race," Haley said. DeSantis visited every county and invested significant time and resources in the Hawkeye State, and weeks ago was predicting he would win the caucuses. Recently he had been saying he embraced the underdog role in the state. "Because of your support, in spite of all of what they threw at us, we got our ticket punched out of Iowa," DeSantis said in his speech. DeSantis outperformed some polling expectations on Monday night, finishing at roughly 21% when the Real Clear Politics average of polls showed him at 15.7% before votes were cast. "They threw everything at Ron DeSantis," a senior DeSantis campaign official told Fox News Digital late Monday night. "They couldn’t kill him. He is not only still standing, but he’s now earned his ticket out of Iowa. This is going to be a long battle ahead, but that is what this campaign is built for. The stakes are too high for this nation and we will not back down." Trump currently holds large leads in the polls in both New Hampshire and South Carolina. The former president, according to the Real Clear Politics average of polls, holds a 14-point lead in New Hampshire and a 30-point lead in South Carolina. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/01/16/nikki-haley-refuses-more-presidential-debates-unless-trump-participates.html Nikki Haley refuses more presidential debates unless Trump participates Nikki Haley said she would not participate in any further primary debates unless front-runner Donald Trump is on stage. The former president won a landslide victory Monday in the Iowa Caucus, the first contest of the 2024 presidential nomination. Haley placed third in Iowa, with 19.1% of the vote. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis accused Haley of not wanting to answer “tough questions” on topics such as her alleged dealings with aircraft manufacturer Boeing while she was governor of South Carolina. “The reality is that she is not running for the nomination, she’s running to be Trump’s VP,” DeSantis posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday. “I won’t snub New Hampshire voters like both Nikki Haley and Donald Trump, and plan to honor my commitments. I look forward to debating two empty podiums in the Granite State this week.” The next GOP primary debate is scheduled for Thursday, days before the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 23. Polls have Haley running just behind Trump in the state, some polls by as little as 7 points. https://redstate.com/jenvanlaar/2024/01/15/watch-vivek-ramaswamy-addresses-supporters-in-iowa-n2168776 Vivek Ramaswamy Suspends Presidential Campaign, Endorses Donald Trump Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, fresh off a 4th-place finish in Iowa, addressed his supporters and announced that he is suspending his campaign. Ramaswamy spoke for just about 10 minutes before taking questions/comments from supporters. He told his supporters that he'd promised them he would tell the truth and be realistic, and that acknowledging hard truths required him to say that there was no path for him to be the nominee. He told his supporters that he is committed to America First principles and that Trump is the candidate who will do things like get rid of the deep state, restore national pride, and eliminate a chunk of federal bureaucracy. Brooklyn transit cops stopped the 36-year-old Luis Hernandez after he was seen smoking on the subway on Friday. Under normal circumstances, Hernandez would have been released with a simple court summons, but he was held up after officers scanned his name and found out he was wanted for murder, Daily News reports. Police took Hernandez to Queens and showed him video and photos showing him at a murder scene on 31st St. near 36th Ave. in Astoria, according to authorities. Police say Hernandez and three or four others took part in the murder of Richard Hernandez, 21 on Feb. 9, 2020. “Mr. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty and fully intends on fighting the charges against him,” his attorney, Mahmoud Rabah, told the Daily News on Monday. “Mr. Hernandez is a committed father of a young child,” Rabah claimed. “He is a hardworking immigrant who has held a stable job in a meat processing plant for years. He completely maintains his innocence and looks forward to his day in court.” Hernandez has no prior arrests and was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Sunday. The victim, who is not related to Luis, was out with friends when a fight erupted. Witnesses told the Daily News that at least one attacker was armed with a machete, and another a knife. The victim was slain just a few blocks away from where he lived, and ultimately could not be saved after being taken to Mount Sinai Queens. Three other men sustained minor wounds during the brawl, police reported at the time. Police said on Monday that the attack was linked to gang activity. Unexpectedly, it was the Cowboys who got blown out. The Packers raced to a 27-7 halftime via a fast-paced, deep-ball attacking offense complimented by an explosive running game from Aaron Jones and aided by two interceptions from a defense that seemed determined to make everyone forget about their late-season struggles. Here are 3 big things you need to know right now— Number One— Weed is not the magic bullet and the cure they have claimed for years—in fact Dr. Drew says a new study shows the impact of smoking dope could be very detrimental— Number Two— James Comer and Jim Jordan are ready to issue a new subpoena for Hunter Biden—and it looks like it may play out differently than did the ones that were sent out a few weeks ago—and resulted in big time political stunts— Number Three— The 2024 Presidential election season is officially underway—with voters in Iowa turning out in the bitter, record breaking cold and wind—to participate in the traditional Iowa caucuses— And with Joe Biden's approval numbers falling all the way to just 31 percent in a brand new ABC poll—the winner Donald Trump is ready for a rematch, with the guy who took over after his first term—and based on what we have seen—this race is not going to last very long at all— And the former President secured the Iowa win by breaking the 50% mark as expected—and as expected it is sending those on the left into a full blown panic attack today—and I will get to all of that— The one big surprise of the night—might be Florida Governor Ron DeSantis finishing second in the race— The numbers look this way with Trump picking up 51% of the vote—DeSantis at just over 21% and former Ambassador Nicki Haley coming in 3rd with just over 19%-- That will also leave the left crying—as they have been pushing the idea in recent weeks that somehow Haley is a stronger and more electable candidate—well, that idea went bust in the snow covered fields of the Hawkeye State last night— So lets take a lap around Iowa in the aftermath of the Caucuses—

The Iowa GOP presidential caucuses are tonight, and the Hawkeye State is expected to see the coldest weather for caucus night in decades. Former State Sen. Bob Onder (R-Lake St. Louis) is in Des Moines this morning as a surrogate for former President Donald Trump. Senator Onder joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that he believes Iowa farmers will turn out tonight to support former President Trump. Onder says farmers are used to this kind of weather. Onder tells listeners Des Moines has received about 18 inches of snow and that your feet hurt to walk outside, due to the subfreezing temperatures. While he's currently running for Missouri lieutenant governor, former Senator Onder tells "Wake Up" that he's also looking at a possible run to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-St. Elizabeth) in Missouri's sprawling third district, which includes parts of Columbia, Jefferson City, Boonville, Fulton, New Florence and St. Charles County. Onder tells listeners he expects to make a decision in the next week or two about whether he'll run for Missouri lieutenant governor or Congress. Former Senator Onder tells listeners that who we send to Congress is important. He blasts President Joe Biden (D), saying the cost of living for the average family in the United States has increased by $11,000 under President Biden:
Republicans will gather in 1,600 precincts in Iowa on Monday, and after listening to speeches by each campaign, voters will write down their favorite candidate. The handwritten names are tallied on-site and reported both to the state party through traditional means and entered into an app for viewing. Former Aide to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Jimmy Centers previews the Iowa Caucuses, expecting this year's assembly to be especially interesting due to an increase of first-time caucus-goers, strong opposition to the incumbent candidate...and below-freezing temperatures. The Iowa Caucuses are on Monday, and former President Donald Trump is shaping up to be a shoo-in. However, inclement weather and sub-zero temperatures may make it difficult for people in the Hawkeye State to cast their ballot. Following his departure from the race, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was caught on a hot mic saying fellow candidate Nikki Haley would get "smoked" in the contest. On Wednesday, former President Trump shared at the FOX News Town Hall that he agrees with Christie for once. FOX News Radio's Political Analyst Josh Kraushaar and FOX News Radio's Washington D.C. Correspondent and political anchor Jared Halpern preview the event and discuss the remaining candidates' strategy to take home a win. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Delegates from the Hawkeye State will gather in just one week to kick off the 2024 Presidential Primary season, casting their ballot for who they want to represent their respective parties come November. Chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa Jeff Kaufmann explains how the caucus procedure will play out, determines whether the Iowa caucuses are a strong indicator of how a presidential candidate will do later in the election cycle, and predicts a higher turnout for this year's GOP, driven possibly by new fears amongst Americans. The Iowa caucuses for the presidential primary are just over a week away, and the candidates are making their final pitches to voters across the Hawkeye State. Boyd starts by taking a look at Ron Desantis's town hall last night, but turns to President Joe Biden's first speech of the 2024 reelection campaign at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. Why did the President choose to kick off the race at George Washington's home? Boyd explains.
Former President Donald Trump remains the GOP front-runner despite not sparring with his fellow candidates during the fourth Republican primary debate. With a few weeks left until the Iowa caucus, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis went on the offensive against former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, as the pair compete for a crucial second-place win in the Hawkeye State. Co-anchor of America Reports, Sandra Smith, joins the Rundown to analyze the candidates' performance and break down the latest polling showing President Biden's approval ratings have sunk. In October, there was a reported breach of the genetic testing company '23AndMe,' confirmed when a hacker posted that they had obtained the data of 1 million users of Jewish Ashkenazi descent and one hundred thousand Chinese users. Two weeks later, the same hackers reported having four million users' data—and now the company has come forward, admitting 6.9 million people's data has been exposed. On the Rundown, founder and CEO of Applied AIC and cyber security expert John Cofrancesco explains how the hackers used the dark web to access the usernames and passwords of users to hack into their accounts and what harm could be done if this information lands in the wrong hands. Just two years ago, not a single state had universal school choice. Today, nine do. To understand how groundbreaking this education renaissance is, just look at the state of Iowa. Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) began 2023 by signing into law the Students First Act , which allows all Iowa families to receive funds in an education savings account, or ESA, to attend the school of their choice. But Reynolds didn't stop at school choice, either. She also signed into law a common-sense parental rights bill, SF 496 , that prohibits instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools in grades K-6 and prohibits school libraries from stocking sexually explicit materials. The law also requires libraries to post their card catalogs online for the sake of transparency. These groundbreaking reforms have earned the Hawkeye State the Heritage Foundation's 2023 Education Freedom Award. Join Kevin and Gov. Reynolds as they explore the pivotal role of school choice in revitalizing education systems, amplifying parental autonomy, and breaking free from conventional educational norms. Tune in as they discuss the paradigm shift towards empowering families in shaping their children's educational journey and the nationwide implications of this bold movement towards education freedom. This weekend, Republican presidential candidates made their way to the Hawkeye State for the annual Iowa State Fair. Although many candidates seized the opportunity to sit down with Governor Kim Reynolds for a 'Fairside Chat' to share their platform with voters, former President Trump declined a sit down with her. Other candidates such as Miami Mayor Francis Suarez are using the event as a way to garner more support ahead of the first presidential debate later this month. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) discusses how the candidates' campaigns have evolved over the months and explain the importance of winning over voters in the first caucus state. President Biden signed an executive order this past week that will limit American investments in Chinese technology. The Biden Administration believes that the order will stifle China from enriching its military with the use of the United States' dollars, and promote domestic advancement in the fields of semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) joins to discuss the impacts the executive order may have on foreign relations with China, the government's role in regulating private corporations, and how China may react to the policy decision.
