In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jill Merkel, Registered Dietitian, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor. Take a look at some of her work experience in the area of sports nutrition and you'll see precisely why I was excited to have her on the show: Team Sports Dietitian for the NFL Tennessee Titans for five seasons (2017-2021). Consultant Sports Dietitian for Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) working with NBA G-League players for three seasons (2018-2020). Sports Performance Dietitian for EXOS (performance training department) at Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine where she worked with athletes of all ages including youth, high school, collegiate, and professional (NFL, NHL, NBA, and WNBA) (2015-2016). Collegiate sports nutrition experiences at the University of Utah, University of Oregon, University of Louisville, and University of Virginia (2013-2015). Here are some of the things we addressed during our discussion: What does it mean to be an "anti-diet, weight-inclusive dietitian" and how is that different than other dietitians who may not use that label? How and why pursued dietetics and what was it about sports nutrition that she found so appealing? She spoke about her time as the team dietitian for the Tennessee Titans and some of the expectations coaches had regarding player weights. How to incorporate nutrition principles specifically for performance in the context of the Intuitive Eating framework. Supplementation Is there a place for intentional weight loss/gain in the context of performance nutrition when taking a weight-neutral, non-diet approach? And more! If you'd like to work with Jill, she provides support for men, women, and teens so definitely reach out!
