Each week, I'll be bringing you inspiring guests, insights, and mindset tools to empower you to be energized, compress time, and start living instead of existing. Episode Title: Protein bars and drive-thrus again? [Your nutrition cheat code—straight from a pro sports dietitian.] Host: Robyn Engelson Guest: Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD Episode Summary: In this energizing episode, Robyn chats with Amy Goodson—registered dietitian and certified specialist in sports dietetics—about how to fuel athletes (and their busy families) in a realistic and approachable way. With nearly two decades of experience working with everyone from peewee players to pro athletes, Amy breaks down the myths and simplifies nutrition. She shares her practical, no-fuss approach to making better food choices—even on the road, at tournaments, or in the middle of a chaotic week. Whether you're a parent, an athlete, or someone just trying to eat better without obsessing over perfection, this episode gives you the tools and mindset to make it work in real life. You'll learn: Why fueling athletes (especially youth) properly is about more than just game day The magic of the 80/20 rule and how to apply it to family meals How carbs and protein work together to support stable energy and brain function Why “fuel early, fuel often” is Amy's #1 nutrition motto Easy protein-packed breakfast ideas and grab-and-go snacks The difference between sports nutrition vs. everyday nutrition—and why it matters How to navigate gas stations, fast food joints, and airports without derailing your goals Why habit stacking can help make fueling routines second nature Memorable Quotes: “You don't get better on game day. You get better at practice—and you have to fuel for that.” “I'm a real-life dietitian. I don't love to cook, but I love to help people win with food.” “Fuel early, fuel often—that's how you stay ahead of the energy crash.” Resources & Mentions: Favorite Grab-and-Go Ideas: Egg muffin cups, energy bites, trail mix, string cheese Books & Tools on Habit Stacking: Atomic Habits by James Clear Actionable Steps for Listeners: Start With Breakfast – Don't skip it. Pair a carb with a protein to set your energy up for success. Use the Plate Method – At every meal, aim for ⅓ carbs, ⅓ protein, ⅓ veggies, plus a splash of healthy fat and fruit. Plan Lightly – Spend 30 minutes on the weekend making energy bites or protein-rich muffins to last you all week. Surround the Treat – If your kid wants waffle fries, pair it with a grilled sandwich and fruit. Balance is key. Habit Stack for Success – Add a snack or hydration routine to something you already do (like packing your gym bag). Stay Hydrated – Especially for athletes, hydration is as crucial as food. Set phone alarms if needed. Final Thought: Nutrition doesn't have to be perfect—it just needs to be consistent and realistic. Amy reminds us that fueling your body well is not about restriction, it's about strategy. Whether you're on the court, at the office, or in the stands, when you plan just a little, you gain a lot of energy, focus, and confidence. Small habits repeated daily lead to big wins. What listeners have to say: “Her energy is fire! I love being able to apply her simple strategies and life tips to my daily life to be energized instead of existing.” Loved this episode? Are you a helicopter parent? Be honest! In this episode of the podcast, Pastor Alex is once again joined by his good buddy D-Mack to discuss a few topics that are keeping social media buzzing. The conversation revolves around helicopter parents. This discussion is in light of LeBron James attacking sports commentator, Stephen A Smith, over comments he made about Bronny James - the Los Angeles Lakers rookie who is struggling in the NBA G-League. Some say the only reason Bronny was drafted is because his dad is King James. Fair or Foul? When people think of major sports hubs in the United States, places like Boston, New York, or Los Angeles come to mind. Maine, on the other hand, might not immediately be thought of as a sports state, but the reality is quite the opposite. Maine has a rich and exciting sports scene, with professional teams, college athletics, and thriving local leagues that provide fans and athletes alike with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the game. Whether you love hockey, baseball, basketball, soccer, or even “old guy hockey” as I like to call it, Maine has something for you. If you're considering making Maine your home, the sports culture here is just another reason to get excited about moving to the Pine Tree State.Professional Sports in MaineDespite its small size, Maine is home to several professional sports teams, each bringing exciting competition and passionate fan bases to the state. The Maine Mariners, a professional hockey team in the ECHL, serve as an affiliate of the Boston Bruins and play their home games at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. The Mariners have developed a strong following, offering an affordable and thrilling hockey experience for fans who might not want to make the trip to Boston for NHL action. Every year, we host a special Maine Mariners event for our clients, creating a fun and exciting way to connect with the community and enjoy some high-quality hockey.Baseball fans in Maine rally behind the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Hadlock Field, where the Sea Dogs play, is considered one of the best minor league stadiums in the country, and it's the perfect place to catch future MLB stars in action. With a family-friendly atmosphere, plenty of themed nights, and the beloved mascot, Slugger the Sea Dog, it's no surprise that a day at Hadlock Field is a favorite activity for locals. In the past, we've hosted Portland Sea Dogs events as well, and it's always a fantastic time. For basketball fans, the Maine Celtics, formerly known as the Maine Red Claws, represent the state in the NBA G League as an affiliate of the Boston Celtics. The team plays at the Portland Expo Center, providing an opportunity to watch up-and-coming NBA talent before they hit the big leagues. Attending a Maine Celtics game is a great way to experience fast-paced basketball action without the high costs of an NBA ticket.Perhaps the most exciting new addition to Maine's sports scene is the Portland Hearts of Pine, a professional soccer team competing in USL League Two. This marks a huge milestone for Maine soccer, as it provides a stepping stone for future MLS players and gives local soccer fans a team of their own to support. The Hearts of Pine play their home games at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, and with soccer's growing popularity in the state, this team is set to build an exciting fanbase.College Athletics in MaineMaine's college sports scene is just as lively as its professional leagues. The University of Maine Black Bears boast a Division I football program in the Coastal Athletic Association and have produced NFL players, including Baltimore Ravens fullback Pat Ricard. The school's hockey program is even more legendary, with two NCAA national championships to its name. The Black Bears' hockey games in Orono are some of the most electrifying sporting events in the state, with passionate fans creating an incredible atmosphere.Another noteworthy college sports rivalry exists between Bowdoin, Colby, and Bates, three historic Division III colleges in Maine. This rivalry has been alive for over a century, and fans of these schools take their athletic competitions seriously. Bowdoin College, in particular, has one of the most beautiful hockey rinks in New England, and their games bring in a dedicated following. If you're looking for a tight-knit college sports community, these schools deliver an experience that is steeped in history and tradition.Local and Adult Leagues in MaineMaine isn't just a great place to watch sports—it's also an amazing place to play them. Soccer has exploded in popularity across the state, with local leagues like Seacoast United, GPS Maine, and the Portland Coed Soccer League offering adults of all skill levels a chance to get on the field. Whether you're looking for competitive play or just a fun way to stay active, there's a soccer league in Maine for you.For those who prefer ice over grass, hockey remains a staple of Maine's sports culture. That's where "old guy hockey" comes in—a term I use to describe the incredible adult hockey scene in the state. If you're over 30 and still want to lace up your skates, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Pickup games, beer leagues, and friendly tournaments are played regularly at venues like the Family Ice Center in Falmouth and Troubh Ice Arena in Portland. Playing hockey isn't just about competition; it's also about camaraderie, staying active, and reliving the love of the game.Maine is also home to an impressive golf scene, with over 100 golf courses spread across the state. Whether you're teeing off at Belgrade Lakes Golf Club or playing a round at Cape Arundel Golf Club—where former presidents have been known to hit the links—there's no shortage of stunning courses to explore. The Maine Golf Association offers plenty of tournaments and opportunities for golfers to stay competitive while enjoying the scenic beauty of Maine. Why You Need a Realtor When Moving to MaineIf you're thinking about moving to Maine and want to enjoy everything the local sports scene has to offer, working with an experienced Realtor is essential. A Realtor can help you find homes near stadiums, sports venues, and recreational facilities, making it easy to stay connected to the teams and activities you love. Additionally, Realtors understand the local market, helping you find the best deals and navigate Maine's real estate landscape with confidence.Without the help of a Realtor, homebuyers risk overpaying, missing hidden inspection issues, and getting lost in complicated legal disclosures. A trusted agent not only finds you the perfect home but also helps integrate you into the community—whether that means pointing you toward the best hockey league, connecting you with a local soccer team, or even inviting you to our annual Maine Mariners event!Join Us for Our Annual Maine Mariners Event!Every year, we host a special client event at a Maine Mariners game, bringing together sports fans, homebuyers, and members of the Make Maine Your Home family. It's a fantastic night filled with exciting hockey, fun prizes, and the chance to connect with other people who love living in Maine. If you're thinking about buying or selling a home here, partnering with us means you're not just getting a Realtor—you're joining a community.Final Thoughts on Maine's Sports SceneMaine has far more to offer sports fans than most people realize. From professional teams and college rivalries to local leagues and recreational activities, there's no shortage of ways to get involved in the sports culture here. Whether you're looking to attend games, play in a league, or live close to the action, Maine's vibrant sports scene makes it an exciting place to call home. If you're thinking about making the move, I'd love to help you find the perfect home that fits your lifestyle. One of the coolest sports stories of the young new year was Golden State Warrior Pat Spencer being guarded by his younger brother, Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cam Spencer, in a game on Saturday, Jan. 4. It was the latest crescendo of a pair of incredible athlete journeys that were heavily influenced on the lacrosse fields at Boys' Latin (Md.) and Loyola University Maryland. After winning the Tewaaraton Award in 2019, Spencer played a year of basketball at Northwestern and has since worked his way through the NBA G-League to sign a two-way contract with the Warriors. Meanwhile, Cam — who also played lacrosse for the Lakers — started his college basketball career at Loyola, then transferred to Rutgers before finishing his career as a national champion with UConn in April. He was selected with the 53rd overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and made his debut with the Grizz in November while also logging minutes (and success) with the G-League Hustle. Though the Spencers' focus is squarely on maximizing their NBA dreams, they also have an eye on life after basketball, which is why they've invested in a startup called Chillshark. Founded by Pat's BL teammate Keegan O'Connor, a 2014 Under Armour All-American who played at Maryland and High Point, Chillshark is a device that can convert any device into a cold plunge. Recorded on Dec. 3, Pat, Cam and Keegan joined IL's Terry Foy to discuss their journey to that point, as well as the merits of cold therapy and how O'Connor plans to go about building the business.

Soundbytes 11:54-12:20 "I think the ability to be able to one outline a vision for people, you know, I just think our coach meeting us at the beginning saying, Okay, this is our objective. So being able to outline a vision of where you want to go, a plan, to articulate a plan." 15:51-16:22 "I think it starts with education, especially for young people. We're in an era of name, image, and likeness opportunities, and the social media boom has opened so many doors. The Rockets earned their first win of a season-long five-game homestand with Wednesday's 106-90 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The Rockets erase a two-game skid and hold the third-best record in the Western Conference. After a stint in the NBA G League earlier this season, Cam Whitmore has returned to Houston and provided a spark off the bench, recording 18 points and three rebounds in 24 minutes of play Wednesday. "The scoring is his natural ability," head coach Ime Udoka said while joining "The Matt Thomas Show with Ross." Udoka also commented on the defensive efforts of the 20th overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, helping the Rockets rank third in the league for points allowed per game this season. "He's really improved in those areas," Udoka said. When speaking to the media following Wednesday's win, Whitmore appeared frustrated with his playing time, saying, "I contributed a little bit, but it doesn't really affect anything. Doesn't really, you know, can't get me anywhere, but we'll see what happens, but just glad we got the win." Udoka acknowledged Whitmore's postgame remarks, adding that he understands his young forward wanting to earn minutes. "We have a deep team with a lot of guys that are deserving," Udoka said. "When we get everybody back, it's a good problem to have."
