Graduation is a big moment. It means one chapter is ending and a new one is starting. You might feel happy, proud, relieved, or even a little worried about what's next. Meeting the Standard with Dr. Derrick Burgess

In a world full of copy-and-paste success stories, it's easy to believe that hard work alone is enough to make you stand out. But the truth is, doing your best doesn't always mean you're meeting the standard and meeting the standard doesn't mean you're the best.  Many people are comfortable with working harder or improving their skills, but the real challenge lies in being different. Being different means stepping outside of what's normal, expected, or accepted. That's uncomfortable.  You don't have to be perfect. You don't need to rush. But if your goal is to be the best, then just meeting the standard is not enough. You have to push past it. You have to study what the best are doing, learn from them, and then take it a step further in your own way. What makes you different might just be what makes you great. Be different. Be great. In this episode, I reflect on a powerful experience I had at the Momentum Conference with Dr. Eric Thomas.  I will share the key takeaways from his speech, focusing on the importance of setting a high standard for yourself, being relentless in pursuing your goals, and the mindset shift required to achieve success. Tune in to hear how you can apply these lessons to elevate your game! "When you don't know the rules, it's hard to become successful in that field. Being able to understand and really identify the standard is important." Breaking Financial Barriers for Doctors with Dr. Zwade Marshall

The journey through medical school and residency is tough, and it often feels like there's no time for anything else. But once the white coat is on, life outside of medicine starts to matter more. The pandemic forced many to rethink everything, showing that being a doctor isn't just about treating patients—it's also about handling personal finances, making smart investments, and taking control of your future.   Financial literacy, something many of us didn't learn early on, became a real game-changer. Talking about money, real estate, and managing debt should happen sooner, not later. The truth is, many doctors face financial struggles in silence. Acknowledging this is the first step to changing that.   It's time to open up the conversation about money in medicine, learn about finances, and empower the next generation to succeed in both their careers and personal lives. Success is more than just the work inside the white coat—it's about building a life outside of it too.   Dr. Zwade Marshall is an Emory and Harvard-trained, double board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain management specialist. He serves as Chief Medical Officer of Regenerative Spine and Pain Specialists. With a background in Economics from Emory and clinical training from Harvard, Dr. Marshall co-founded Doc2Doc Lending to create physician-focused financial solutions after recognizing how traditional banks often misjudge the risk profile of early-career doctors.   In this episode with Dr. Zwade Marshall of Doc2Doc Lending, we talk about the financial realities physicians face—from student loan debt and low early-career incomes to the challenges of building credit. We explore the importance of financial literacy and how destigmatizing debt can empower physicians to build wealth, stability, and peace of mind.   "The beauty of companies that are started by folks who are a part of the community who understand the pressures, is that you get empathy with the business." – Dr. Zwade J. Back in the Game: The Road to ACL Recovery with Jency Riley Jr.

In the world of professional sports, athletes face the constant fear of injury. While the physical impact is clear—strains, tears, and breaks—the mental and emotional effects can be just as severe. The fear of never returning to peak performance can cloud an athlete's confidence and mental health, making recovery a long, challenging process. Injury not only disrupts an athlete's career but also challenges their identity. The road to recovery requires physical healing and emotional resilience, as athletes wrestle with frustration and self-doubt. However, many emerge stronger, learning to push through both physical and mental barriers. Overcoming the fear of injury means accepting it as part of the journey. By confronting and working through this fear, athletes can return to their sport more prepared, confident, and focused on what lies ahead. Jency Riley Jr. is a student-athlete and passionate storyteller majoring in Sports Media and Journalism. With a strong background in sports and a deep love for media, he is dedicated to blending his athletic experience with his skills in journalism to offer fresh perspectives on the sports world. As an active podcast host, Jency dives into game analysis, athlete stories, and interviews with those shaping the sports landscape. He aims to engage audiences through new media platforms, creating content that entertains, informs, and inspires. In this episode, I'm excited to share a conversation I had with Jency Riley Jr, a tight end at Jackson State University, on his YouTube channel. We talked about ACL injuries, recovery, and the challenges athletes face—not just physically, but mentally too. As an orthopedic surgeon with over 13 years of experience, I dive into what athletes go through, from surgery to the emotional ups and downs of returning to play. This episode is a must-listen for athletes, parents, coaches, and anyone looking to better understand the journey of injury recovery. "It doesn't matter how well I do your surgery. If you don't do your part, you're gonna remain weak and you're not gonna be able to protect your knee when you go back to play." – Dr. Derrick Burgess Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Welcome to TimeOut with the SportsDr Podcast (00:02:31) Jency Riley's knee surgery (00:04:11) Meet Dr. Derrick Burgess (00:06:06) Small world moments (00:07:25) Starting the podcast to inspire others (00:09:57) How knee injuries are diagnosed  (00:12:55) Understanding the rehab process before surgery (00:15:53) A blessing in disguise (00:18:53) Importance of support for injured athletes (00:19:12) The first painful week of recovery (00:21:02) Importance of rehab for full recovery (00:22:34) The fear of re-injury is real (00:24:38) Run your own race (00:26:17) Strengthening your quad (00:29:37) Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess (00:31:24) Wrap-up Key Takeaways:   "It's unfortunate when you get injured, but it's fortunate for me because that's the people that I really get to know."  "I think it's important for people to know that you don't have to be perfect to achieve whatever dream you have, number one."  "It taught me to appreciate the small wins. Building a legacy goes beyond financial wealth—it's about laying a foundation that allows future generations to start from a stronger position. In many families, financial wisdom is passed down, equipping children with the knowledge to navigate life with greater stability. However, for those who didn't inherit that guidance or resources, every step toward financial literacy and long-term planning becomes a step toward breaking cycles.   True success isn't just measured by personal achievements but by the ability to create opportunities for those who come after us. This can be done through education, mentorship, or by teaching problem-solving skills. Remember, legacy-building is an intentional act. It ensures that today's sacrifices pave the way for a better future—not just for our children, but for generations to come.   In this episode, I continue my special conversation with my dear mother, Dorothy Burgess. We talk about the lessons she has learned in life, the challenges of being a first-generation professional, and the importance of hard work. She shares her thoughts on education, raising children, being a grandmother, and why family time matters. Family shapes identity, values, and aspirations. It's where love, sacrifice, and resilience take root, shaping who we become.   It's in the quiet moments—the shared meals, the bedtime stories, the reassuring words after a hard day—that character is built. The lessons aren't always spoken, but they are lived. A parent's unwavering support, a grandparent's wisdom, a sibling's laughter—these form the foundation that steadies us through life's challenges.   Family teaches perseverance in the face of setbacks, generosity in times of need, and the importance of standing together. It reminds us that we are never alone, that we carry within us the strength of those who came before us.   The true legacy of a family isn't measured in wealth or achievements, but in the values passed down—the love that endures, the lessons that guide, and the bonds that remain unbroken through time.   In this special episode, I sit down for a heartfelt fireside chat with my first and most influential teacher—my mother, Dorothy Burgess. It's easy to believe that some things are meant for others—those who appear more qualified, more prepared, or more deserving. But the reality is, no one is more deserving of growth, joy, and success than anyone else. The doors that seem closed may not be locked; they may only require the courage to push them open.   There are gifts within each of us that are meant to be shared. Talents that were never meant to be hidden. The world is filled with places where those abilities belong, waiting to be used in ways that haven't even been imagined yet. The only thing standing in the way is the belief that they don't.   Stepping into more isn't just about achieving a goal or reaching a new milestone. It's about shifting perspective—seeing possibility where there once was hesitation, recognizing that every challenge is also an invitation to rise. Growth isn't just for the people who seem ready; it's for anyone willing to take the first step.   The path forward doesn't require perfection—just a willingness to believe that more is meant for us. Freedom isn't just about escaping—it's about rising. In life, we sometimes face moments that push us to the edge—moments where the future feels uncertain, and fear overwhelms us. But even in those dark times, there's a quiet strength within us that rises. It's in those moments of uncertainty that we are called to trust, to believe that God is guiding us, even when the way seems unclear. Pushing through fear requires resilience and faith in something greater than the circumstances around us. The truth is, we all have the power to rise, no matter what we've faced or where we've come from. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, to build, and to become more than we were before. So, when life gets tough, and fear of the unknown begins to creep in, remember: you have everything it takes to rise above it. The generations before us laid the foundation. Now, it's our turn. What legacy will you leave? Keep moving. Keep believing. You've got everything it takes to rise. In this episode, I take a moment to honor Black History Month by recognizing not only the well-known figures but also the everyday heroes who have shaped our lives and communities. This episode is deeply personal as I reflect on the legacy of my beloved grandmother, Delia Burgess—affectionately known as Big Mama—who recently passed away just shy of her 95th birthday. I share a 2013 recording of Big Mama's journey from sharecropping to freedom. Tune in for this inspiring conversation on faith, perseverance, and the enduring legacy of those who came before us. Life often throws challenges our way, but having the right mindset can make a significant difference. We all face obstacles, big or small, and it's easy to get discouraged when things don't go as planned. However, learning how to overcome these challenges is key to success. A positive mindset helps us see obstacles as opportunities for growth rather than roadblocks.   Overcoming challenges and fears requires more than just wishing for change. It takes consistent effort, positive self-talk, and a mindset that embraces growth. When we understand that we are enough and that the road to success is filled with both triumphs and difficulties, we can navigate life's challenges with greater strength and confidence. As we move through these obstacles, we not only achieve our goals but also become better versions of ourselves.   In this episode, I share my thoughts on the powerful impact of mindset when facing obstacles and overcoming fears. Strength doesn't come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't. We all are faced with certain obstacles in life that affect our decisions and challenge our patience. Sometimes, it feels overwhelming, but they all teach us something important. They help us align our dreams more closely with the reasons we pursue them and  make us more grateful even for the little unnoticeable things.   As we continue to walk this journey, having the right people beside us can make all the difference. Realizing that we can do something on our own but having mentors makes the process so much easier. Remember, every challenge we allow ourselves to be refined by is what makes our story unique and relatable. When people see us face difficulties and come out stronger, it motivates them to do the same. Our experiences can serve as a reminder that everyone struggles, but it is how we respond to those struggles that defines us.    In this episode, I'll share the key lessons from my keynote speech at the National Medical Association in New York City. Manifesting Dreams Through Action with Dr. Derrick Burgess

How often do we let the allure of our dreams distract us from the hard work required to achieve them?   Many people get caught up in the word "dream." It evokes images of grandeur and a life of ease, leading many to envision their future successes without recognizing the sacrifices and determination required to attain them. While having dreams and goals is important, focusing too much on them can distract us from the crucial work necessary to turn those aspirations into reality.   This disconnect between dreaming and doing can lead to a cycle of frustration, as we become so enamored with our visions of success that we overlook the disciplined effort needed to reach our destinations. Therefore, it is essential to establish a clear plan that outlines actionable steps toward achieving our dreams. Additionally, developing this perspective enables us to focus less on the idealized outcomes of our dreams and more on the process of growth and learning that comes from pursuing them. In essence, while dreams can serve as powerful motivators, they should not overshadow the hard work required to realize them.   In this solo episode, I will share the importance of taking action and putting in the work to achieve our goals. We'll explore how focusing solely on dreams can be a distraction and how every great achievement starts with a single step. Tune in as we learn about the value of self-reflection, taking action, and the practical steps required to manifest personal and professional growth.   "Be prepared, and when opportunities arise, you'll feel more comfortable grasping the concept. Athletes face many challenges, from intense physical strain to mental pressures that can affect their performance and well-being. They push their bodies to the limit in pursuit of excellence, often risking injuries that can sideline them for weeks or even months. However, their journey becomes more manageable with the unwavering support of athletic trainers.   Athletic trainers are the unsung heroes who stand by every athlete. Along with their many challenges, athletic trainers face a tough reality: long days filled with rigorous demands, heart-wrenching injuries, and a salary that often doesn't reflect the time and energy they invest in their work. Are we doing enough to ensure our young athletes are truly protected and supported on their journey?    When it comes to sports, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of the game and overlook important health aspects. The thrill of competition, the adrenaline rush of scoring points, and the camaraderie with teammates often take center stage. However, maintaining proper health practices is crucial not only for peak performance but also for long-term well-being.   One of the most overlooked aspects of sports is injury prevention. While many athletes focus on building strength and improving skills, they may fail to prioritize essential things like preparing their physical and mental health for the demands of the sports. Hence, parents must play an active role in ensuring that their children are taking the necessary steps to stay safe and healthy. Remember, prioritizing health in all its forms is the key to sustainable success on and off the field.   Rebecca Turner, MS, RDN, LD is an author, registered dietitian nutritionist, radio host, television presenter, and board certified in Lifestyle Medicine (DipACLM). We talked about sports medicine, focusing on issues like heat exhaustion and overuse injuries in young athletes. I also offered practical tips for parents on handling sports-related pain and injuries in kids, and highlighted the importance of proper medical evaluations and athletic trainers. Challenges are something we all face at some point in life, but it's how we respond that defines us. We've all encountered moments of self-doubt, times when the challenges before us seemed insurmountable, especially when stepping into roles or opportunities that feel beyond our reach. When faced with these obstacles, it's easy to question whether we have what it takes to succeed. This doubt can feel overwhelming, but it's important to remember that these are just tests along our journey, not permanent barriers.   Thus, it is important to approach failure with a mindset geared toward learning and growth. Viewing challenges as opportunities rather than threats can significantly change our experience. By adopting a mindset of growth, seeking guidance from coaches, surrounding ourselves with a supportive community, and using affirmations to build confidence, we can navigate through difficulties with resilience and strength.    In this episode, I will share my experience of giving my first onstage performance at the Next Level Speakers Academy where I had the opportunity to speak in front of top speakers in the world. Indeed, the more we take on, the harder it becomes to maintain balance. We might start to feel like we're constantly running on empty, struggling to keep up with all our commitments. However, there is a danger in trying to do everything and be everything to everyone. When we stretch ourselves too thin, we jeopardize our own well-being. Conflict is not a hurdle to be overcome, but a pattern to be understood; it is through the examination of these patterns that we unlock the truly creative potential of our challenges. We see conflict in various facets of our lives, from personal relationships to professional environments. In these spaces, conflict often arises from differences in values, goals, or communication styles. Yet it is precisely these differences that offer fertile ground for growth and innovation.   Many conflicts we encounter often intensify because we tend to concentrate on defending our own stance instead of trying to understand the perspective of the other person. Hence, our defensive approach can create a cycle of misunderstanding and frustration, where both parties feel unheard and undervalued. Therefore, we must adopt a mindset that prioritizes understanding over winning. Remember, resolving conflict is not about proving who is right or wrong but about finding a way forward that respects the needs and perspectives of everyone involved. By cultivating a mindset that seeks to understand and learn from conflict, we can transform it into a powerful catalyst for personal and collective growth.   Jennifer Jones-Patulli is a conflict management and leadership development consultant with a passion for transforming conflict into a productive force. In 2019, Jennifer founded Productive Conflict LLC, where she combines complexity thinking, conflict resolution, and power dynamics to help clients foster better collaboration, increased productivity, and stronger organizational relationships. Her innovative approach emphasizes the need for adaptive, interdisciplinary strategies to tackle complex challenges and achieve lasting results.   In this episode with Jennifer Jones-Patulli, we will discover how to turn conflicts into chances for growth and creativity. Surrounding ourselves with people who believe in us and offer encouragement helps us stay motivated. Their support can provide a boost when we are feeling low and remind us of our potential when we start to doubt ourselves. Ultimately, overcoming fear requires a combination of self-belief, perseverance, and a strong support network. As we navigate through life's challenges, we develop a deeper understanding of our own strengths and weaknesses.    Dr. Manju Dawkins is a caring doctor and mother who knows how scary needles can be. Her journey started when she saw the fear in her daughter's eyes during her first shots. As a dermatologist, she used numbing creams to ease the pain, but she knew it wasn't enough. She saw that untreated pain was a common problem in medical care for both kids and adults. To find a better solution, Dr. Dawkins started Thimble. Thimble is changing how needle procedures are done, aiming to remove the pain and fear from shots and blood draws. Their solutions make these experiences more comfortable for everyone, helping patients and their care teams, and improving overall public health. Dr. Dawkins is dedicated to making sure no one has to endure needle pain and fear. Her work at Thimble is helping millions of people have a better, less painful healthcare experience.   In this episode with Dr. Manju Dawkins, we will learn about her inspiring journey of perseverance, hard work, and believing in oneself despite the challenges and doubts from others. Throughout the episode, Dr. Dawkins discusses the value of embracing challenges, learning from failures, and the need to quiet external noise to listen to one's inner voice. She also touches on the significance of taking breaks and allowing time for recovery, both physically and mentally, to maintain long-term health and well-being. Dr. Dawkins' journey is a testament to the fact that with the right mindset, support system, and determination, one can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.    “A lot of people have opinions about you but they don't know you and what's inside of you. So take the time to quiet your noisy mind to know what you're capable of, what you're meant to do and what you deserve.”– Dr. Manju Dawkins   Topics Covered: (00:00:34) Introducing our special guest, Dr. Manju Dawkins  (00:01:13) A journey from sports to medicine (00:03:05) Mindset of a Challenger (00:05:15) Listen to yourself (00:06:34) Celebrate small wins (00:07:32) The Role of Supportive People (00:08:33) Embracing endless growth  (00:12:09) Love and compassion in healthcare (00:15:09) What is medical dermatology? In a world where we're expected to mask our struggles behind a white coat or a suit, finding the courage to be an open book is truly commendable. We all have struggles and setbacks in different forms. Some of us face challenges in our careers, others deal with personal issues, and many of us encounter both at the same time. Whether it's grappling with addiction, experiencing job loss, or dealing with health crises, the journey through these trials can be incredibly tough.    Many of us compartmentalize our pain until it overwhelms us, but acknowledging our challenges is the first step towards healing. When we begin to openly recognize and talk about our difficulties, we take a significant step toward recovery. Embracing this openness allows us to seek the support we need from mentors, coaches, and loved ones. By sharing our experiences and vulnerabilities, we break down the walls of isolation and build connections with others who may have faced similar struggles and provide them with grace we have received.Remember, it's through understanding our struggles and reaching out for support that we transform our challenges into strengths.    Courtney Barrows McKeown, MD is a board-certified general surgeon. She earned her medical degree at New York Medical College, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. McKeown openly discusses the difficulties of dealing with addiction, especially in a high-pressure profession like surgery. Time is our most valuable asset, but when we don't make the most out of it, regret may overcome us. Every moment wasted is an opportunity lost, and the weight of missed chances can be a heavy burden to bear. Sometimes, we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, forgetting to spend time with loved ones and making the most of what we're capable of in making a difference in the world and the lives of others.     As was the life of Big Daddy, a shining example of how to use time wisely. Big Daddy lived his life to the fullest, always making sure to spend time with his family and help those in his community. He showed us that the best way to use our time is by building strong relationships, giving back, and leaving a positive impact on the world. He made sure his family felt loved and supported, and he worked hard to improve the lives of everyone around him. Thus, his legacy teaches us that time spent helping others and standing up for what is right is never wasted.   I'm thrilled to share an episode that is deeply personal and significant to me. In this episode, I reflect on the final moments I shared with my grandfather, Charlie Burgess Sr., affectionately known as Big Daddy. This reflection isn't just about personal memories but about the legacy he left behind—a legacy that goes beyond financial inheritance and encompasses family values, rituals, and making a lasting impact on the community. Join me in this heartfelt episode as we celebrate the incredible legacy of Charlie Burgess Sr., a man whose life embodied the spirit of service, love, and community. Stay tuned and enjoy this episode.   Special announcement For Residents/Fellows and Early Attending Physicians. For a limited time only.   “Life is precious and time is our most valuable asset. Every pursuit, no matter how humble, deserves the touch of greatness. Achieving greatness is a challenging pursuit. Some people may perceive it in ways that seem easy to reach and attain, but in reality, greatness demands every possible effort you can give. It's like climbing a mountain. If you want to reach the top, you can't just sit down and hope someone will carry you up. You have to keep pushing yourself, even when it's tough. You can't just sit back and expect greatness to come to you. You have to work for it every day.   Sometimes, when people see the weight of effort greatness requires, they tend to quit striving and settle on being just an average in their chosen fields. Sure, it might seem easier to just coast along, doing the bare minimum, but deep down, you know you're capable of more. Therefore, dream big and give your very best in all that you do. Always remember that everything starts in our minds, the plans, visions, and steps. We are capable of being our best version if only we begin looking at things through the lens of positivity and continuous learning despite the adversities.    Dr. Eric Peters is a pharmacy entrepreneur, real estate investor, public speaker, pharmacy consultant, and owner of Lagniappe Pharmacy in Louisiana. Success in healthcare is not measured solely in patient numbers but in the positive impact, we make on the communities we serve. In our world, not everyone has the same chance to be healthy. Some people face obstacles that make it harder for them to access good healthcare and live a healthy life. Certain groups of people have their health at risk due to unfair barriers and unequal opportunities, making it difficult for them to afford their needed medicine.   Moreover, it is vital to realize that health injustice happens to many people not because they don't care about their health but because of specific reasons including the place they were born, their income, or even the color of their skin. Hence, to fix these problems, we must work towards a healthcare system that goes beyond just treating illnesses but also addresses the root causes of health inequalities. Therefore, at the end of the day, healthcare is a right and not a privilege determined by one's background or circumstances.   Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo is a healthcare founder, social entrepreneurship coach, healthcare practice funding consultant, and growth strategist for women of color in healthcare. Her career as a pediatrician spans almost 2 decades and includes her work as a public health researcher & professor for over a decade. Her work has been defined by a passion for social justice, serving as an advocate and working as a global physician across sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Dr. Omolara co-founded Strong Children Wellness which provides integrated physical health, mental health, and social services for minoritized, low-income children and families. She founded Melanin & Medicine which helps mission-driven practices secure capital without incurring debt or diluting equity. Dr. Uwemedimo is an expert in purpose-led entrepreneurship, securing funding for healthcare, addressing medical racism for marginalized providers and patients, and building socially responsive healthcare spaces.   In this special episode with Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo, we will learn about the journey of a remarkable woman who has not only embraced diverse roles in healthcare but has also pioneered innovative approaches to address the needs of the underserved. The conversation highlights her dedication to healthcare, her global perspective, and her commitment to health equity and justice. She also shares insights about the challenges faced by under-resourced communities and how we can collaborate across various sectors to create meaningful and sustainable change. And you're always told that life outside the box can be scary so we just go to school, we finish training, we pray for a job that works out.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   “The way I practice medicine is very globally informed and outside of the box. There's so much that we do in medicine that we don't even realize comes from the ingenuity of how people were working in Sub-Saharan Africa.” – Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo   “One of the beautiful things though about this time of the pandemic was that it reminded me of caring in global health and the way that like things needed to move urgently, we needed to move in and out.” – Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo   “Nobody else wants to take care of kids, but they don't want to pay pediatricians their worth.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   “My favorite part about my work was not like physical primary care but the relationships and trying to find all of these supports for families because that was what catapulted them to changed their outcomes and change their health outcomes.” – Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo    “Seeing patients is not enough. Behind every victory, there is a story of sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering support from those who champion our dreams alongside us. Marriage is a commitment many of us take for granted. We often focus on the visible accomplishments and accolades, forgetting the countless moments of quiet support and sacrifice that made those achievements possible. Some of us fail to appreciate our spouses and end up regretting the missed opportunities to express gratitude and love.   Hence, we must realize that marriage goes beyond just feelings and requires love in a deeper sense. It includes daily effort, understanding, constant support, patience, and a willingness to put the partnership above individual desires — which often involves sacrifices and some compromise. It's about being there for each other through good times and bad, celebrating victories together, and comforting each other during failures. So, dear friends, if you are considering marriage, find someone who not only makes you happy but, most importantly, someone who strives to bring out the better version of you.   In this special episode, I will share with you the things I want to celebrate as a father and a husband, the lessons I've learned, and the things in my marriage that shaped me into the person I am today. Embracing opportunities often means stepping out of our comfort zone. Perfectionism can be a hindrance, but seizing the moment opens doors to unforeseen successes. Starting something new can feel scary, like taking a plunge into the unknown. Whether it's writing a book, starting a business, or launching a podcast, it's natural to feel uncomfortable. But it's in those moments of discomfort that we find growth.    However, many of us fall into the trap of perfectionism, where we get stuck in wanting everything to be just right before we even begin. This mindset can hold us back from starting something new or taking the first step. While we are waiting for the perfect moment, which may not come, we miss out on opportunities along the way. Therefore, we must learn to embrace imperfection and take action despite our fears. Instead of waiting for everything to align perfectly, we should focus on progress over perfection.    In this special episode, I will share with you my journey over the past three years of podcasting, the reasons why I started, and the incredible opportunities it has brought me. I will provide insights on why podcasting has been a game-changer for me, offering a platform to establish authority, expand my network, and connect with incredible individuals from various fields. I also want to reach out to young physicians to join our upcoming virtual seminar, "The Home Stretch." Medicine is indeed a noble profession, one that transcends the boundaries of science and reaches into the depths of human compassion. Physicians are not merely practitioners of medicine; they are healers, caregivers, and advocates for the well-being of their patients.  It requires years of intense study, training, and examination. But becoming a doctor is just the start. After medical school and residency, physicians continue learning and developing throughout their careers, exploring new paths and discovering more about themselves along the way.   Doctors need to be strong and flexible to do well in a healthcare world that's always changing and often confusing. They have to face problems with bravery, keep going even when things don't work out, ask for help when they need it, and understand that changing jobs is normal in healthcare. This helps them become even better at what they do. Therefore, doctors must possess not only clinical expertise but also resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace change.    Amy Vertrees MD is a General Surgeon, Surgeon Coach, Author of "Become the BOSS MD", Keynote speaker, and Founder of BOSS Business of Surgery Series. With a deep understanding of the challenges physicians face beyond the operating room, Dr. Amy is dedicated to empowering her peers to take control of their careers and thrive. Drawing from her own journey and years of expertise, she understands that residency training only scratches the surface of what it takes to succeed in the medical field. It became her mission to guide fellow physicians toward becoming the BOSS MD they aspire to be. Her approach is not just about surviving in medicine but thriving—with Dr. Amy's guidance, physicians can regain autonomy, find balance, and rediscover the joy in their profession.   In this episode, I will share with you an interview I had with the Business of Surgery Series podcast with Doctor Amy Vertrees. Some of the key themes that emerged from our discussion were the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of unexpected changes, the emotional toll of job loss and career transitions in medicine, and the art of physician contract negotiation. We also talked about the intricacies of navigating career transitions in the medical field, drawing from my own experiences and insights gained over the years. "Success is not reaching the top of the mountain; it's the passion of each step climbed, the resilience shown in the face of adversity, and the growth experienced with every stumble." In seasons of achievements and successes, some of us fail to take a pause and appreciate our triumph. We become so fixated on reaching the pinnacle of our ambitions that we overlook the beauty of the journey itself—the trials, the triumphs, and the transformations that occur along the way. No wonder many of us find ourselves feeling unfulfilled even after reaching our goals. Because when we fail to recognize the value of the journey, we rob ourselves of the opportunity to fully appreciate our achievements.   Therefore, we must realize that the true beauty of achievement lies not in the attainment of a goal, but in the transformation that occurs within ourselves as we strive towards it. We are often advised to focus on the goal but I want to encourage you to focus more on the journey. To appreciate our progress of being better in what we do. To continue pursuing a goal despite having no one to give you a round of applause or a tap on the back. Take full advantage of every opportunity to succeed and know that no matter what your level of success is, you will always be enough. Hence, as we continue on our respective paths, let us embrace the journey, celebrate our successes, and strive for even greater heights.   In this solo episode, I will share with you my realizations in this graduation season, reflecting on the significance of milestones, the journey beyond them, and how we can navigate life's transitions with purpose and gratitude. I want you to take a moment to appreciate the success and its genuine sense, since many of us fail to acknowledge our progress in our pursuit to achieve every goal we have on our checklists. Buckle up and discover the hidden gems within the journey towards our dreams.   "Many times, in life, we don't take the time to appreciate what we've accomplished or what we achieved." – Dr. Derrick Burgess   Topics Covered: (00:00:48) The Graduation Season (00:01:39) Appreciate your progress (00:03:54) How do you nurture your gift? In life, we are often faced with numerous and various decisions that can shape our path and influence our future. Decision-making is one of the crucial parts of our lives.  Each choice we make determines our direction and the path of our journey.  Some circumstances may not involve significant choices,  but others  may require us to step out in faith, get our knees on the ground, and raise our hands in surrender to the almighty God who is always in control. Life is a choice.  The greatest mistake a man can ever make is choosing to live his life apart from God's guidance and grace. Therefore, we should possess a humble heart that acknowledges the wisdom of God in every circumstance whether  favorable  or unfavorable. Though some things in this world may cause us trouble and discouragement, still, we have peace that passes all understanding, knowing that we are never alone.  The eyes of our Lord are always on us. Thus, may we all find the courage to walk in faith and embrace the transformative power of God's guidance in every decision we make.   Pastor Wesley Thompson is a loving husband, father, educator, author, activist, chaplain, political candidate, pastor, and faithful man of God. He is a native of Florence, Alabama. He is the senior pastor and teacher at Bethel Colbert Missionary Baptist Church and previously served as a youth pastor and interim pastor in his eleven years of ministry. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of North Alabama and a master's of divinity degree from Mercer University. He is pursuing a doctor of ministry degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center. He has worked as a college admissions recruiter and adjunct professor. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., NAACP, the Academy of Preachers, and various community service organizations. He is married to Le'Tanndra Thompson, and they have three sons.   In this episode, we will revisit a conversation I had with Rev. Wesley Thompson over a year ago and learn how faith in God guided him through the complexities of decision-making amidst the darkest moment of his life. He underscores the significance of seeking divine direction, aligning decisions with personal aspirations, consulting trusted confidants, and how God can lead us towards paths of hope, healing, and purpose. Rev. Thompson's testimony serves as an inspiration to all who listen, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, faith can lead us to hope, healing, and unexpected blessings. Tune in to gain a wealth of wisdom on the impact of faith on decision-making during life's darkest moments.     “When making decisions, it's usually going to be uncomfortable when you're more than likely to not be guaranteed one way or the other and that's where the faith piece comes in.”   Topics Covered: (00:01:43) Ask God for direction (00:03:16) Where faith comes in (00:04:36) The doubts of starting a podcast (00:06:33) Introducing our special guest, Rev. “Perfection is the illusion that stifles authenticity while embracing imperfection. It is the gateway to genuine self-validation and growth.” In a world fixated on perfection, where every flaw is magnified and every misstep examined, it's easy to lose sight of our inherent worth. Oftentimes, we end up focusing more on other people's achievements rather than the unachieved expectations we have for ourselves. It gradually coats our hearts with jealousy. It eats away our self-esteem, leaving behind a bitter residue of bitterness and negative self-talk. And there's no easy way out of this den.   Hence, we must cultivate a mindset guided by self-compassion and realize that we can be more of what we perceive ourselves to be. Instead of focusing on what we haven't achieved and waiting for other people's approval, we must learn to see opportunities for growth and give ourselves a high five, especially amid tough times. Indeed, we are stronger than we think, and we have the power to overcome any obstacle that comes our way. We are our own beacon. Remember, self-validation is the key to overcoming insecurities and building a stronger sense of self-worth.   In this Part 2 Book Review episode of The High 5 Habit: Take Control of Your Life with One Simple Habit, I will continue to empower you with insights and practical strategies to cultivate self-validation, banish negative self-talk, and embrace the power of positive affirmation. The episode touches on the importance of recognizing insecurities, understanding the source of jealousy, and embracing our inner strength and worth. Every word you speak to yourself is a brushstroke on the canvas of your life; paint it with positivity and purpose. We are taught to be a source of encouragement to the people around us, striving to be someone who uplifts and supports others in their journey. But sadly, we forget to extend that same kindness to ourselves. It's so easy to get caught up in negative self-talk when we see our shortcomings and face our insecurities. Oftentimes, we overlook the importance of validating ourselves and celebrating even the smallest of our progress.   Today, I want to remind you that learning to speak kindly to ourselves is an act of self-care and an extension of our service to the world. As we learn to forgive ourselves, appreciate our hard work, and love ourselves despite our flaws, we become empowered individuals who radiate a contagious positivity that uplifts those around us. It's a way of spreading love and positivity in a world that often feels harsh and unforgiving. Therefore, as we strive to be sources of encouragement and support for others, let us also remember to extend the same level of kindness and compassion to ourselves.   In this special episode, I will share the transformative insights outlined in Mel Robbins' book, “The High 5 Habit: Take Control of Your Life with One Simple Habit.” This book serves as a guide for cultivating a mindset of self-empowerment and overcoming self-limiting beliefs. The episode touches on the importance of self-validation, the common pitfalls of people-pleasing behavior, and how we can overcome our insecurities. Wellness Beyond Work with Dr. Frances Mei Hardin

Life's challenges are tough enough for many to bear.   Likewise, when knowledge is shared with harshness, it can add an extra burden to our daily struggles. Learning should be a journey that inspires and uplifts, not one that weighs us down with criticism and pressure. Accordingly, some educators often perceive the idea that toughness and harshness are necessary components of the learning journey. However, we must realize that this can actually make learning harder and more stressful, especially in the field of medicine.   Therefore, we must recognize that people have their own challenges. Consequently, encouraging them to feel better about themselves can make a big difference. By embracing empathy and kindness, we can create a learning environment that not only equips future physicians with the knowledge and skills, but also nurtures their well-being. Let us work together to build a future where medical education uplifts and inspires, rather than burdens and diminishes. Remember, residency is a vessel of learning and growth, but it should not come at the cost of our well-being. Prioritizing mental health is not a luxury, but a necessity.   Dr. Frances Mei Hardin is a former college athlete, otolaryngologist, and advocate for physician wellness. Drawing from her experience as a former college athlete, Dr. Hardin understands the importance of resilience, determination, and teamwork in achieving goals. As an ENT surgeon, she brings precision, expertise, and compassionate care to her patients, particularly in the specialized field of head and neck surgery. Driven by her passion for physician wellness, Dr. Hardin created the Rethinking Residency platform to provide support and resources for resident physicians navigating the challenges of medical training. Through her speaking engagements, writings, and advocacy efforts, she strives to create a culture of support and understanding within the medical community.   In this episode with Dr. Frances Mei Hardin, we will learn from the first ENT specialist to join the podcast and discover how we can advocate for healthcare professionals by addressing their mental health and well-being. Dr. Harden shares how her residency training exposed her to a culture of maltreatment and abuse, contrasting sharply with the supportive environment she had experienced in athletics. Such experiences drive her to build a platform that will empower trainees to overcome adversity and prioritize their well-being. Tune in as we explore the challenges faced by healthcare professionals and discuss actionable strategies for nurturing a healthier and more supportive work environment.   "A person who's working in a traumatic work environment over several years is going to arguably not learn as well as they would have if the environment was slightly less malignant." – Dr. Frances Mei Hardin   Topics Covered: (00:00:36) Introducing our special guest, Dr. Frances Mei Hardin. In the game of life, there are levels to be conquered. Therefore, elevate your play because greatness resides beyond the comfort of your current standing. Sometimes, when things seem to be going well, there's a subtle temptation to settle for the status quo. However, we must realize that it's a deceptive safety net that keeps us from reaching for greatness. Certainly, we are taught to be content in the present, appreciate our achievements, and find solace in stability. Although these ideas have merit, becoming great demands striking a careful balance between contentment and the constant pursuit of improvement.   In the same way, to be a seven-figure public speaker, many things must be kept in mind.  It is not only an art but also a science that challenges every speaker to become better in what they do, to always be honest, and to realize the liberating truth that nobody cares about who you are until you make them care. It takes a lot of dedication, discipline, and desire to make every dream happen; yet, we know that God has something in store for us.  Therefore, he is waiting for us to be ready to receive it.   In this special episode, I will share with you the insights I gained from my day two experience during the Seven-Figure Speaker course. During the conference, I had the opportunity to witness public speaking at an elite level and understand the importance of discipline, facing the truth, and realizing that nobody cares about your talents or hard work until you make them care. I hope that by sharing these takeaways, you'll find inspiration and practical wisdom to apply in your journey; whether it's in speaking, personal development, or pursuing your dreams. Buckle up and get ready to grow and learn how to truly embody the essence of a seven-figure speaker.   “Once you commit to something, be prepared to wait for it because it's not going to happen right away.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   Topics Covered: (00:00:41) Day 2: The Seven-Figure Speaker Course (00:02:08) Shift in perspective towards financial security (00:04:40) Stop lying (00:05:36) “No” is not personal (00:06:08) Nobody cares (00:08:27) Focus on the main thing (00:10:18) 5 Steps to make your hopes come to life   Key Takeaways:    “Once you see something you can't unsee it.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   “Speak to feed, don't speak to eat.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   “You cannot deliver what you have not developed.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   “Your gift is something that comes easy for you but difficult for most.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   “Nobody cares what skill set you have, nobody cares. It's up to you to make them care.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   “I'm a dreamer of sorts and I want other people to be able to see that they can achieve more than whatever their current situation is.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   “Sometimes we ask for things, but we're not ready to receive them. If we truly receive them in the time that we're asking, we'll fumble it, we'll mess it up. It could even destroy us because you have to be ready to receive what you're asking for.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com   This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. It's not the money that matters, but the influence. Public speaking is an art that blends skill, authenticity, and emotional intelligence. However, in today's competitive world, people often find themselves caught in the misconception that success in public speaking is solely measured by financial gains. Some people expect rewards without putting in the necessary work and building credibility.    Hence, we must understand that impact, influence, and income take a lot of effort and dedication to achieve. It takes some serious elbow grease to make it happen. And it's not just about standing in front of people and talking but about making a real difference which involves confidence with competence and truly putting in the time to get good at what you're doing. We must also embrace the qualities of a seven-figure speaker that embody the essence of strong values, great work ethic, and sustainability. Because truly in every career choice, you can't expect to show up and win. You've got to train hard, understand the journey, and be ready for all kinds of weather. In essence, success in this arena is not measured solely by the size of the paycheck but by the depth of influence and the enduring character of a person.   In this solo episode, I will guide you through an enriching exploration of the various insights I've learned from industry experts during the Seven-Figure Speaker course that empowered me to navigate the world of public speaking with confidence and purpose. This episode touches on diverse topics including the importance of values, work ethic, and disciplined time management, the connection between competence and confidence, how to become an impactful speaker, and the three pillars of impact, influence, and income. Buckle up and get ready to grow and learn how to truly embody the essence of a seven-figure person.    “Don't try to mimic what everybody else is doing. Create valuable content as it pertains to yourself and be consistent, collaborate with others, develop your expertise, and then when you do those things, when you have the impact when you have the influence, the income will take care of itself.” – Dr. Derrick Burgess   Topics Covered: (00:00:32) Day 1: The Seven-Figure Speaker Course (00:01:55) Values, Work ethic, and Sustainability (00:03:24) How does impact increase your area of focus (00:05:15) What is your influence? Because at the end of the day, healthcare is a right and not a privilege determined by one's background or circumstances. Omolara Uwemedimo   “Some people say that in business, the scariest number in business is one because if one person, one revenue stream, there's always that ability for there to be a loophole.” – Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo   “A lot of us underestimate how much we've developed and how much we have that is important and can be leveraged to nonprofits who are serving the populations.” – Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo   “Health equity means that within what we have right now, how the structure is then let's provide certain additional things or certain populations who aren't getting the same access, who aren't getting the same outcomes.” – Dr. Omolara Uwemedimo   “Seeing patients is not enough.
