Podcast: Toe the Rubber May 1, 2025 Return to Synchronicity McClintock and Jung Barbara McClintock: American scientist and pioneering cytogeneticist who made groundbreaking discoveries in genetics. She is best known for discovering "jumping genes" or transposable elements— segments of DNA that can move within a genome. Her work showed that genes are not fixed in place and can regulate each other, which was revolutionary at the time. "If you know you are on the right track, if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off... no matter what they say.” "There's no such thing as a central dogma into which everything will fit. Life is too complicated for that.” Carl Jung: “Synchronicity is an ever-present reality for those who have eyes to see.” “The connecting principle appears to reside in the dynamics of the collective unconscious.” Current trend in Gadgets: A short list of physical products: Cross Symmetry bands/tubing Jaeger bands Towell drills - derivatives Weighted baseballs Baseball Derivatives of the pitch grips and different pitches Long Toss A list of technology products (arm or pitch centric): 1. Proximal-to-Distal Sequencing in Pitching: A Coaching Manual for Youth Development Understanding the Proximal-to-Distal Movement Pattern In pitching, the proximal-to-distal movement pattern refers to the sequential activation and movement of body segments, starting from the body's center (proximal segments) and progressing outward to the extremities (distal segments). This sequence is crucial for generating maximum velocity and reducing injury risk. The kinetic chain in pitching typically follows this order: pelvis → trunk → shoulder → arm → forearm → hand. Each segment builds upon the momentum of the previous one, culminating in efficient energy transfer to the baseball. (Biomechanics Research Aims to Improve Sports Performance, The Association of Baseball Pitch Delivery and Kinematic Sequence ...) Sequencing Order and Its Importance The ideal pitching sequence involves: (Kinematic Sequence Important for Preventing Baseball Injuries) 1. Pelvis Rotation: Initiates the kinetic chain, generating rotational energy. 2. Trunk Rotation: Transfers energy from the pelvis to the upper body. 3. Shoulder Rotation: Continues the energy transfer, positioning the arm. 4. Arm Acceleration: Propels the forearm and hand forward. 5. Forearm and Hand Movement: Final acceleration and release of the ball. (Sport Specialization and Overuse Injuries in Adolescent Throwing ..., Comparison of Kinematic Sequences During Curveball and Fastball ...) Proper sequencing ensures that each segment reaches its peak velocity at the right time, optimizing performance and minimizing stress on the body. (Biomechanics Research Aims to Improve Sports Performance) Negative Effects of Overtraining Distal Segments Focusing excessively on training distal segments (arm, forearm, hand) can disrupt the natural kinetic chain, leading to: • Increased Injury Risk: Overemphasis on the arm can cause imbalances and place undue stress on joints and muscles, increasing the likelihood of injuries such as UCL tears. • Neuromuscular Fatigue: Isolated training of distal segments can lead to fatigue and decreased performance due to the lack of support from proximal muscles. • Inefficient Mechanics: Neglecting the development of proximal segments can result in compensatory movements, reducing overall pitching efficiency. Disruption of Motor Engram Sequencing Motor engrams are neural patterns that encode specific movements. Overtraining distal movements can: • Alter Motor Patterns: Focusing on arm path alone can lead to the development of faulty movement patterns, disrupting the natural sequencing of the kinetic chain. • Impair Skill Acquisition: Neglecting full-body mechanics hampers the integration of complex movements, making it harder for pitchers to learn and refine their delivery. • Reduce Adaptability: Ingrained improper patterns limit a pitcher's ability to adjust mechanics in response to game situations or coaching feedback. Age-Specific Considerations Ages 10–12: • Focus: Developing general athleticism and introducing basic pitching mechanics. • Training Emphasis: Body awareness, balance, and coordination exercises. • Avoid: Specialized pitching drills that isolate arm movements. Ages 13–15: • Focus: Refining mechanics and building strength. • Training Emphasis: Core stability, lower body strength, and integrated movement patterns. • Monitor: Growth spurts that may affect coordination and mechanics. Ages 16–18: • Focus: Enhancing performance and preparing for higher-level competition. • Training Emphasis: Advanced strength training, power development, and fine-tuning mechanics. • Caution: Avoid overuse and ensure adequate recovery to prevent injuries. Conclusion A comprehensive understanding of proximal-to-distal sequencing is essential for developing efficient and safe pitching mechanics. Coaches should prioritize full-body training approaches that emphasize the integration of all body segments, ensuring young pitchers build a solid foundation for long-term success.

What happens when young athletes face increased injury rates?  Welcome to another episode of Oak Performance Radio, where we are passionate about optimizing performance and minimizing injury. Brought to you by your host, Adam Lane! In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Scott Ferry, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon from OrthoIllinois. With a B.S. in bioengineering and a medical degree from the University of Illinois, Dr. Ferry brings knowledge to the discussion on athletic injuries in young athletes.  He highlights a concerning trend: the significant rise in ACL injuries among this population, noting that cases have surged from 10-20 annually to 40-60. This increase is primarily attributed to single-sport specialization and heightened competition levels. Dr. Ferry emphasizes the need for moderation in sports participation, advocating for proper rest and recovery to prevent injuries. He also addresses modern medicine's challenges, including the influence of social media and a growing trend toward subspecialization. Throughout the conversation, he shares his journey of balancing his professional obligations and family life. This episode is an important reminder for coaches to prioritize recovery time and discourage year-round specialization in a single sport for young athletes.  Parents are encouraged to adopt a balanced approach, focusing on enjoying sports, teamwork, and overall development instead of chasing elite-level aspirations. 00:00 Intro 00:10 Dr. Ferry's Career Journey 04:47 Changes in Pediatric Orthopedic Services 10:52 Increase in Pediatric Orthopedic Injuries 11:47 General Orthopedic Practice and Subspecialization 40:32 Advice for Coaches and Parents 40:48 Impact of Social Media and Parental Concerns To learn more about this topic, tune in to the episode! Did you know that there is no data that has ever been presented that has shown that elevated, cushioned shoes prevent running injuries? In this podcast, we're getting to the truth behind the stunning and embarrassing rate of overuse injuries. A 2021 meta study from Europe revealed an annual injury rate of 37 to 56% of regular runners, Runner's World reported 46% of runners get injured every year, a study from Yale reports 50%, while Wake Forest Biomechanics Laboratory says 79% of runners get an overuse injury every year. Interestingly, The American College of Sports Medicine states that 25% of all runners are sidelined at a given time—a stat worse than the injury rates for NFL players (31 percent injured annually with four percent at a given time)! In this episode, we get to the bottom of this issue, since there have been many misconceptions and misunderstandings about what is causing these running inquiries, and the nuances are quite interesting. As you will learn, one of the great lies of the fitness industry that has ever been propagated is that elevated, cushioned shoes prevent injuries—a lie that has been going on for 50 years! This is the perfect show to listen to if you want to learn the truth about cushioned shoes and the science that explains why they do not support foot health and athletic performance and actually generate 7 times more impact trauma than landing in bare feet. As you will hear, the entire premise of elevated, cushioned running shoes is deeply flawed—what they really do is enable people to run long distances and get injured.    LINKS: Brad Kearns.com Brad's Shopping page B.rad Whey Protein Isolate Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! As a youth player Verheijen was part of the famous Dutch Youth Academy structure. Unfortunately, his dream of a professional career ended as a chronic injury forced him to retire at the young age of 18. This disadvantage became an advantage as Verheijen started his coaching career at the age of 19. He studied Exercise Physiology and Sport Psychology at the Free University Amsterdam and completed his Masters Degrees in 1995. In 1995, Verheijen developed his Masters thesis into the book ‘Conditioning for Soccer' which became the coach education book of the Dutch FA (KNVB) in 1997. Verheijen became a pro-license instructor at the Dutch FA in 1998.  In 2014, Verheijen published the best-selling book ‘Football Periodisation'. More than 30,000 copies have been sold worldwide. His latest books are ‘Football Coaching Theory' (2020) and ‘Tactical Principles' (2022). In our discussion today, we talk about the importance of understanding fitness as the number of game actions a player can complete in a minute, not mindless running. Fitness must be focused on the ability to repeat game actions, not simply run without the ball. We also discuss injuries, how the US develops slow players because of our tournament model, how playing up must be managed better, and so much more.  Learn more about Raymond and grab his books at www.fcevolution.com.  This week's podcast is brought to you by our friends at Sprocket Sports.  Sprocket Sports is a new software platform for youth sports clubs.  Yeah, there are a lot of these systems out there, but Sprocket provides the full enchilada. Our bodies need time to recover. Youth athletes are not invincible, though they may act like it. That's why it's so important to have good communication with a coach –– or a team of coaches –– you can trust. In this day and age with club teams, travel teams, showcases, school teams, private training sessions etc, it is easy to over do it. Parents MUST be an advocate for the health of their athlete. Pitch counts matter. Total number of practice and play hours matter. Early specialization in sports matters. Parents must seek education on these topics and know when too much is too much. The actual "activity" is not intrinsically good or bad - but when you ramp-up volume, you need to consider load management, proper technique, and educate yourself about the other risk factors. 2. Why are our children playing sports in the first place? Focus on improved health factors - not specific outcomes. However, it's possible to raise children who are both skillful in their sport, and healthy, happy, and fit. The two are not at odds with each other. 3. If you decide to enroll your child into competitive sports, devise a plan that includes nutrition, load management, physical strength, rest, flexibility, mental health, etc. etc. The analogy Joseph used is, "Would you drive from NYC to LA without planning rest stops, fuel brakes, and days off?" The same goes for a 10-month soccer program. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/anytime-soccer/support

Tell someone that fishing is a physical sport and you may get some funny looks.  Fishing on the flats of the Florida Keys is quite a bit different than sitting under a shade tree with a bobber, worms, and a 6 pack.  Poling a skiff is hard work.  Often guides pole into the wind for hours at a time with 2 heavy dudes on the bow.  Guys do this 100 days in a row or more during the season.  It is like being a professional athlete.  You are requiring performance out of your body to make a living…regardless of the sea conditions, wind speed, or weight of the boat.  The guide's job is to push the boat and find fish.   Novice polers are overwhelmed by the strength and endurance requirements and fatigue midi day.  Veterans have different problems.  The repetitive movement of poling for years can lead to painful overuse injuries.   I received a question about this asking me to do an entire episode on developing strength for poling so today we will go over the ways that strength can be developed and also go over ways to reduce the chance for overuse injuries.   We go over technique, equipment, and exercises to build strength in the hands, forearms, and shoulders and I discuss how I rehabbed and conditioned my own achy shoulders to have full mobility and pain-free range of motion despite 20 + years of poling a boat professionally.   Take your health and fitness into your own control and prolong your guide career by training as an athlete does. I lead an active lifestyle as a guide…why do I need to workout even more?” I received this question from a listener.  Guides and athletes that engage in only one form of exercise stand a chance to develop overuse injuries resulting from repetitive motion over a long period of time.  Incorporating some strengthening exercises for opposing directional movements can go a long way to making sure that you are able to continue doing what you love for much longer.
