  Imagine being so invested in one thing that it's all you can do... all you can think about. You ate it, drank it... lived it. Luke is describing this very thing - a "fellowship of believers" - whose only pleasure was to "praise God and enjoy the favor of all the people" (vs. 47a).

As our Psalms in 2024 exploration comes to a close, these two represent the extremes - despair and abject praise. Whether we cry out to the LORD day and night about our suffering and affliction (Ps. 88) or whether we praise Him for his greatness with trumpets, tambourines and dancing (Ps. 150), He hears us… and knows us and loves us. Praise the LORD!

Even so, what a comforting set of book ends for us as we live during this time and place in history. 

Daniel has risen in the ranks, but things go sideways in a hurry.  King Nebuchadnezaar had become a little too enamored with himself and jumps the shark… “bow down to the statue, and serve my gods - everyone - or die in a blazing furnace.” That was definitely a ‘dark valley of death', but unwaveringly, they declined to worship the idol. Their God, whom they knew intimately and trusted fully, would save them, whether in life or death.  

Can you think of some things to be thankful for? It's not November or Thanksgiving Day, but we can practice thankfulness everyday… for the redemption of our sin, for God's dominion over all of creation and His daily provision in each of our lives. May we all shout and sing for joy because of these things!

The challenge last week was to determine a 'starting point' for the journey to become who God wants you to be. How'd it go? Having faith in Jesus does not in any way make us sinless, but rather the recipient of God's promises, his special favor and of grace, knowledge, self-control, patience and endurance - all the things that lead us closer to Him and to a more genuine love for others. That's a good starting point for everyone.

Psalm 51 recounts the desperate condition of David's heart after his sin with Bathsheba. "Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins."  vs. 1   David is crying out to God, confessing all his shame and regret. Because he knows God intimately, he also knows God hears him and forgives him. Do you know God like this? Trust Him like this? The world's perspective is that we are essentially 'good', but if you have looked in the mirror or sat alone with your own thoughts for even a minute, you know that to be untrue. So what is your 'starting point' for your journey to become who God wants you to be?

God sees each of us as belonging to him and assures that the best place for us is near him and under his protection. The question is then, is that where you are? And if not, what's holding you back?

Witnessing continued injustice, violence and idolatry causes the prophet Habakkuk to cry out to God, lamenting evil and wondering if God is indeed good. How can such EVIL be any part of God's goodness? How can God USE evil to bring about good? How much of ‘Babylon' do we see in our world today? Believers, take heart! Darkness and chaos are temporal but God's justice is eternal.

“O Israel, if you would only listen!” Psalm 81:9 - God has given his people all the assurance in the world that He would take care of them - keep them safe, carry their burdens and provide everything they could ever need. “But no, my people won't listen.” Instead, they followed their own blind and stubborn way. It bears the question, “How's that working out for you?”

”The day of the LORD is an awesome, terrible thing. Who can endure it? That is why the LORD says, ‘Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts.' Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful. He is not easily angered. He is filled with kindness and is eager not to punish you.” After all of Israel's unfaithfulness, idolatry and evil… THIS. This is our God!  

Lamentations is the result of Israel's ‘bad acts'. God's people have repeatedly broken their covenant with Him and now things are just bad. Awful, in fact. They look around and see sorrow, death and God's anger at their disobedience. “I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss” they lament, “But the unfailing love of the LORD never ends! By His mercies we have been kept from complete destruction.” We can all have hope in the LORD's faithfulness.

Ps. 49, a wisdom psalm, begins by grabbing us by the collar and demanding our undivided attention. God has got something great and wonderful for us and choosing to live apart from God's wisdom and boast in worldly things will be our death, unceremonious and with no eternal destination.

“We are Your people, the sheep of your pasture; we will thank you forever and ever, praising your greatness from generation to generation.” Psalm 79:13 What makes someone worthy of such adoration? Trust, confidence and honesty - tell Him ‘all the things' …the good and bad. He made you. He loves you. He already knows.  

This is our God. This is who He is - He loves us. This is our God. This is what He does - He saves us. As worshippers of Yahweh, there are no truer words!  We come to the LORD in worship and in celebration of what He's done in our lives... HALLELUJAH!

“Oh, what joy for those whose rebellion is forgiven and whose sin is put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the LORD has cleared of sin, and whose lives are lived in complete honesty!” Psalm 32:1-2

If the church is unified around the person and work of Jesus Christ, then as far as the enemy is concerned, it's game on and a battle will be waged for the hearts and minds of those people. But just like a rope is stronger than a single thread, so is a unified body of believers.

People can be unified around any number of events, ideas or causes but our most basic tenet of unity in the church is Jesus Christ. As believers, we must be united around Him - His person, who He was and His work, what He did. 

Unity should be at the heart of any Christian community. Brothers and sisters in Christ living in unity with one another is the glue that holds it all together... it is not enough to just be "present". Unity denotes the blessing of God...and the enemy knows it.
