Fr. Mike explains why it was important to take a census at different points of the people of Israel in the Old Testament. We also learn that the Tribe of Levi is the only tribe that doesn't get an inheritance of land, because they're receiving something much greater. Today's readings are Numbers 26, Deuteronomy 27, and Psalm 111. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Psalm 111 English Standard VersionGreat Are the Lord's Works111 Praise the Lord!I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.2 Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and merciful.5 He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.6 He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the inheritance of the nations.7 The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy;8 they are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.9 He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name!10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!English Standard Version (ESV)The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. ESV® Text Edition: 2016. Book Five, the final part of the Book of Psalms begins. This is where we meet the most quoted Psalm in the Bible, and one of its most beloved.Psalm 110 sees Israel's great king David referring enigmatically to an even greater king, one who he describes as his Lord, a ruler whose kingdom will reign forever.Christians believe they know who this king might be!But first, the book navigates through an epic and poetic storm on the high seas.
Be in the Psalms. They say things that stories and even didactic teachings don't say in the same way. And they penetrate our deep places in ways that other things don't. We are in the Psalms because we are REMEMBERING who God is.
“Be careful that you do not forget the LORD yourGod…”
Message for the start to the year.
Psalm 111 invites us to behold at the greatness of God through His works, His wisdom, and His faithfulness. Today, Pastor Mike explores how this psalm calls us to respond with reverence and gratitude to God's unmatched goodness

The God of Our Thanksgiving | Psalm 111:1-10
A God you can control offers no comfort, but a God who can control history is the only refuge for sinners.
Psalm 111 is an acrostic poem that makes use of every letter of the Hebrew alphabet to show us the fullness of the LORD's steadfast love for which we give Him thanks and praise. The LORD's works are great and majestic as He exercises His power to show us sinners His mercy. We remember His wondrous works that He has accomplished because He has remembered His promises to us. By His faithfulness and righteousness, He has redeemed His people and kept His covenant forever. Such gifts are received in the faith and fear of the LORD. Rev. Merritt Demski, pastor at St. John Lutheran Church—Hanover in Alta, IA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 111. "Psalms of Thanksgiving” is a series on Sharper Iron that looks to several psalms to help us give thanks to God. The LORD gives blessings to His whole creation, even all evil people. As we pray the psalms, He teaches us to receive all His gifts with thanksgiving, knowing that He is good and His steadfast love endures forever. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Well, if you didn't learn it from our time in Songs of Songs, let's just be clear: God is pro-marriage and pro-sex. He created intimacy for the good of mankind so that a husband and wife might enjoy one another to the glory of God. The blessing of marital intimacy should be protected from the many ways that mankind distorts it for selfish gratification. The Corinthian church was recovering from a twisted, worldly sexual ethic, and Paul wants them to know how they might use their freedom in Christ rightly, whether married or unmarried. Paul continues this train of thought about freedom to talk about how one should use their Christian freedom and knowledge for the benefit of others, and not for themselves.1 Corinthians 7 - 1:12 . 1 Corinthians 8 - 9:00 . 1 Corinthians 9 - 11:21 . 1 Corinthians 10 - 17:20 . 1 Corinthians 11 - 22:21 .
