Deerhoof - My Lovely Cat!

Song of the Day

Deerhoof - My Lovely Cat! from the 2023 album Miracle-Level on Joyful Noise. Bay Area-based noise-pop group Deerhoof may not be savvy on internet-memes, but they did dedicate today's Song of the Day to the online feline sensation Lil Bub, and had the song produced by Mike Bridavsky, Lil Bub's owner. As the band explain in a press statement: If you were going to compose a song about a cute cat from the internet, then get it recorded and mixed and mastered by an outside producer known not only for their recording and mixing and mastering, but for their cute cat from the internet, well, you would be shrewd indeed. But this of course we did not do, because we didn't know about Mike Bridavsky or Lil Bub when we wrote the song! Well, we think about him now: a true collaborator and artist and friend. The song is a first-look at the band's forthcoming full-length, Miracle-Level, which will be released on March 31 via Joyful Noise. It's their first Japanese-language LP, and their first to be made entirely in a proper recording studio (with the aforementioned Bridavsky). Lil Bub's Dad shared in a press release, "Satomi [Matsuzaki], Ed [Rodríguez], John [Dieterich], and Greg [Saunier] tried something different on this record, and the result is Deerhoof at their most sparse and vulnerable." This one will really make you laugh and it will also make you cry. In 2011, Mike Bridavsky met the runt of a litter of stray kittens who would go on to become one of the most famous internet cats. Lil Bub, as he named the tiny stray, was facing serious health issues but with a lot of love and persistence, Mike helped Lil Bub get healthy. Shortly after, she became an internet sensation and a poster animal for accepting all people and creatures as they are, regardless of their differences. When Lil Bub passed away in Dec. 2019, people around the world mourned her and media outlets such as CNN shared the news of her passing. Today Mike is keeping Lil Bub's legacy alive with the non-profits that she inspired, and a new addition to his cat family, Mister Marbles. Join us as we chat about the Golden Age of Internet Cats, Twin Peaks, and how the “Stephen Hawking of kitties” changed Mike's life and those of many others. ** Pet Passing Disclaimer: We do talk about the day that Lil Bub passed away. It was a very hard moment for Mike but he gave us the OK to include it in the final episode. If you've had a pet pass away, this moment ¾ through might be tough. https://www.goodjobbub.org/https://lilbub.com/

We had the pleasure of interviewing Major Murphy over Zoom audio! Today, Major Murphy — Jacob Bullard (guitar, vocals), Jacki Warren (bass, vocals), Brian Voortman (drums), and Chad Houseman (guitar, keys, percussion) — share Access, their second album for Winspear. Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield says Access is “an album to blast at an unruly volume to soundtrack an experience one might have standing at that crossroads,” and it's a record that exudes melodic exhilaration and earnest feeling while tackling adult themes of parenting, accountability, and building a sustainable artistic life. Listen to and order Access here: http://smarturl.it/mm-access Recorded at Russian Recording in Bloomington, IN between late 2018 and early 2020 with Mike Bridavsky and Ben Lumsdaine, Access is a project built on Bullard's burgeoning songwriting prowess and a restless, childlike creative spirit informed by Bullard and Warren's newfound parenthood. In five years, Major Murphy has evolved from three jamming roommates into the four piece it is now. Bound by a love for bands from Wings to Junip, Bullard, Voortman and Warren plucked their band name out of an extraterrestrial themed book, and, with the help of Winspear, got off the ground releasing two home recorded EPs in 2015 and 2017. The band's debut LP No. 1 was soon to follow in 2018, and was praised for its “easy, gorgeous harmonies, shimmering production, and timeless subject matter” by Gorilla vs. Bear. Together, with the help of longtime collaborator but newly minted member, Chad Houseman, Access became the band's first attempt at a more deliberate and conceptual creation. We want to hear from you! Let’s Fix Work Episode 80 Have you heard of Lil Bub? If not, let me introduce you to her. She is a published author, a talk show host, a movie star, and has helped raise well over $300,000 for animals in need. In 2011, she went viral and became an internet sensation. Oh yeah, and she’s a cat.   Yes, you read that correctly. Lil Bub is a special needs cat, in fact. She suffers from an extreme form of dwarfism, making her a permanent kitten with stubby legs, no teeth and the inability to use the litter box on her own. So her owner, Mike Bridavsky, helps her with everything, including running the day-to-day business of Lil BUB.  Alright, you may be wondering what an amazing cat and her owner have to do with my podcast. Well, they are a fascinating example of using work to help make the world a better place. So I went down to Bloomington, Indiana, to learn everything I could about the work and business of Lil Bub. And of course, I wanted to meet Lil Bub too. She did not disappoint. So if you're interested in the business of Lil Bub or what it's like to have an internet-famous cat, sit tight and listen to this episode of Let’s Fix Work.  In this episode, you’ll hear: The story of how Mike and Lil Bub met and how she became a very special part of Mike’s life How and when Mike realized he had a famous cat on his hands and how he felt about the internet fame Lil Bub’s purpose through the eyes of Mike What Lil Bub has taught Mike when it comes to caring for a cat with special needs and how what he has learned can be applied to his business How Lil Bub and Mike have been able to donate $700k to charities How Mike learned to maneuver through the complexities and legalities of building off of Lil Bub’s internet fame to create a business that helps charities Is the internet all bad? Have you ever dreamed of going viral, schmoozing with the stars, swimming in piles of virtual likes and shares, retweets and smiley faces? I mean who doesn’t want fan mail, right?  Our guest today is fortunate enough to have experienced all of that but here’s the thing, he wasn’t really dreaming of it.  In fact, as it turns out, most people who go viral weren’t.  Generally they are living life like the rest of us, chasing passions, making ends meet, and then one day this one part of their world blows up.  Today Mike Bridavsky, owner of Russian Recording studio and dad to world famous cat Lil Bub shares his story.   We’re glad you joined us!    Here's an overview:   Early Memories of Entrepreneurship Mike always attracted to creating businesses.  Even as a young kid in his parents’ community of Russian immigrants he would sell berries to his neighbors.  By the time he became a teenager he fell in love with recording music.  Immediately he started recording bands.   The Two Sides of Owning a Business For Mike there are two sides.  The thing your business is about and then the process of owning the business itself.  Mike loved both.   A business is the ultimate customization of something.  You get to pick the brand and the marketing and the place.  The other side is the passion, the thing you love so much that you want to help others with it.  What can be hard when you really love what you do is the monetization.  The “does my business work on paper?” part.  It’s something   Why Recording Studios Are The Worst Business Model Ever The overhead with a recording studio is insane.  All of the equipment is super expensive.  It takes about $300,00 to really get it put together.  But the recording industry has completely changed since the 1990’s.  Rates for a day of record have dropped from $5000 a day to $500.  So the amount you can make on your best day is pretty much break even.   Yet Mike still continues.  In 2007, he decided to go all in.  He got a large loan, quit his day job, and built his dream studio.  Mike and I walked through before the interview.  He showed me a 50’s era Russian ribbon microphone that could have amplified the voices of Russia’s biggest political leaders.  I walked singing from the band room to the dead room and listened to the change in my voice.  Every detail of the space was beautiful… and expensive.  It’s clear that Mike built his dream and his passion for the perfect audio space drove everything, maybe even just a little too far   It All Goes Bad, Then Good After he built the studio, it all went bad.  Bands weren’t showing, he wasn’t able to pay rent, the whole thing was bombing.  And just at that moment, Mike’s cat got famous. Mike had a blog for his Cat Lil Bub.  It was kind of a fun thing.  Him and a friend were kind of pretending like their cats were famous.  Then suddenly one of the blog posts went viral and tons of people wanted to buy t-shirts.  Mike’s entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and his love for Bub became a vehicle for everyone else to love her too.  Lil Bub is in charge, Mike is the facilitator.   The Story of Lil Bub As the person who’s been there from the beginning, Mike truly believes Bub is in charge.  His job is to control the train He employs strict rules about how things work if someone wants to do an event, show, book, or whatever with Bub.  He’s seen that saying “No” to people is actually a great way to get exactly what you want.  They really don’t need to do any of the things their asked so they only do it if it fits perfectly.  Mike just lives life with Bub (and photographs it of course).  He tries to follow Bub’s lead and see where they go.   Lessons Mike has learned: Passion and will power are great but you’ve got to understand the numbers too Various sources of income is important You can’t give all your money away Be Authentic! Going viral never happens on purpose    Special thanks to Mike Bridavsky for taking the time to share the Russian Recording & Lil Bub story with us.   Mentioned in the episode: Russian Recording Lil Bub’s Big Show Lil Bub Animal Planet Show Lil Bub Book Lil Bub on The View YouTube Big Live Comedy Show with Jack McBrayer & Workaholics   Sponsored by Shine Insurance - https://www.shineinsurance.com/ Music by Mark Vinten   Learn more about us at: Our Site -  www.shineinsurance.com Our Blog - www.shineinsure.com/blog Our Podcast - www.scratchentrepreneur.com Our Course - www.newhomebuyersguide.net

She's been the subject of an award-winning documentary, she's the author of Lil BUB’s Lil Book: The Extraordinary Life of the Most Amazing Cat on the Planet and she hosts Lil BUB's Big Show, a web-based talk show. And on December 4th, 2015, BUB will release her debut album Science and Magic. The music was composed by Bridavsky's close friend, bandmate and official bubbysitter, Matt Tobey, and produced by Bridavsky. But the whole thing was guided by Bub, whom big-time fan Andrew WK recently described as "the most musically and compassionately gifted" animal he has ever met. As a rescue cat with several genetic mutations, BUB works to spread awareness about adoption and proper animal care. 25% of the net proceeds from the sales of Science and Magic benefit Lil BUB’s Big Fund for the ASPCA, a national fund for special needs pets. BUB's conversation partner for this Talkhouse Music Podcast is her fellow musician Jon Wurster, who plays drums — brilliantly — for Superchunk, Mountain Goats, Bob Mould among notable others. With Tom Scharpling, Jon is also one half of the team that does The Best Show, which is one of the funniest things you can listen to. And he's also a big-time animal lover. BUB and Jon have a conversation about BUB's new album, her intergalactic origins and… pooping on very expensive comforters. BUB also has a few probing questions for Jon and, well, he answers them as honestly as he can. These two do have a few tense moments, but they're both nice folks, so they patch it up nicely. Despite what you may have been reading on our , through automated announcements programmed a month ago, Indy In-Tune is off it's Summer hiatus and gearing up to bring you some great music and interviews through the rest of the year. The first thing I did when deciding it was time to get back in the swing of things was to go through the stack of correspondence I had accumulated over the past several months. One of the bands that was high on my "short list" was this week's featured act, Glass Halo. I first became aware of Glass Halo last year when they played to a packed house and ended up winning the . I had been in contact with bassist Dave Grodzki via Twitter and drummer Jason Kuykendall via trying to put this all together, but finally it was Stacy Basner of Finer who got the meeting nailed down at the historic Melody Inn, where Finer was hosting an evening of great rock and roll with several local and regional acts. Glass Halo is a perfect example of how dogged determination and a little business savvy will take you a long way in this business -- of course it doesn't hurt to have some great music and talented players in your band, which they most certainly have as well. With two EP's, a full-length CD, and a live CD in their catalog, soon to be complimented by a brand new single in the next few weeks, these guys have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to consistently put together snappy, in your face, rock songs with memorable riffs, catchy lyrics, and enough energy to keep you hooked and wanting to hear more. Add to this a killer live show that has made waves both locally and regionally, and you've got the secret formula that has proven to win over fans and earn the respect of venue owners and fellow musicians alike.
