TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of October 25, 2021.  This episode is part of a series this fall about water connections to the human body and human biology.  We start this week with three mystery sounds, all related to a very numerous group of disease-causing, or pathogenic, microbes that have enormous impacts on human health.  Have a listen for about 20 seconds, and see if know this microbial group.  And here's a hint: big hits on social media are said to spread like this group. SOUNDS – ~19 sec If you guessed viruses, you're right!  You heard a person coughing due to a viral disease; handwashing, an important method of reducing viral transmission; and a spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol, an effective disinfectant against many kinds of viruses.  With attention focused this fall both on the COVID-19 coronavirus and the annual influenza virus season, we explore in this episode some basic information about viruses and some viral connections to water.  Here are 10 key points about viruses. 1.  Viruses are one of four groups of microbes responsible for human disease, along with bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, which are single-celled animals.  As a group, viruses are the smallest of these microbes, although some are larger than some bacteria. 2.  Viruses aren't made up of cells, but instead exist as particles composed primarily of molecules of protein and nucleic acids, that is, DNA or RNA.  They require a cellular host for reproduction, called replication. 3.  Viruses are more abundant than all of the cellular-based living things on earth. 4.  All living things are infected by viruses. 5.  Viruses don't always cause disease in infected hosts, but many kinds do cause significant diseases in humans, other animals, and plants. 6.  Viral disease can result from viruses taking over or inhibiting their host's cellular biochemical processes, or by cell destruction as new virus particles exit cells after replication. 7.  Depending on their type, viruses can be spread through air, in water, from surfaces, by animal vectors, or through exchange of blood or other body substances. 8.  Water-related spread of viruses can occur through water contaminated with human waste, and through animal vectors connected to water, particularly mosquitoes. 9.  Significant human diseases from water-borne viruses include intestinal disease, particularly diarrhea; hepatitis, or liver inflammation; inflammations of the brain, spinal cord, or heart; and possibly cancer.  Viral diseases spread by mosquitoes include Yellow Fever, Dengue, West Nile, and others. And last, but not least, handwashing with clean water and soap is important for reducing the spread of viruses through objects and surfaces—collectively called fomites—with which humans come into contact. Thanks to Freesound.org user n__audioman for making the coughing sound available for public use.  Here's hoping we all hear less of that sound and more of the handwashing and other preventative measures that keep viruses—water-borne and otherwise—somewhat at bay. SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Stewart Scales for his banjo version of Cripple Creek to open and close this show.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. AUDIO NOTES AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thanks to Dr. Sally Paulson, Virginia Tech Department of Entomology, for her help with this article. The coughing sound was recorded by user n__audioman (dated December 14, 2015), and made available for public use by Freesound.org, online at https://freesound.org/people/n_audioman/sounds/331068/, under the Creative Commons Attribution License 3.0  For more information on Creative Commons licenses, please see https://creativecommons.org/licenses/; information on the Attribution License specifically is online at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/. Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Max Gall moved to a small town in Pennsylvania only two years into his life. Max is known for his unique chord structures and rhythmic acoustic guitar. His unique style and love of alternate tunings comes from an interest as a kid in players like Don Ross and Antoine Dufour, though before discovering that style he was raised on artist like Neil Young, Eddie Vedder and The Rolling Stones. His father always had an acoustic guitar around the house and would teach him little bits here and there, and once Max reached his teenage years he was hooked. Structuring songs became a way for him to express himself; an escape from the world around him that allowed him to unwind and reset. During his high school years Max formed the band Coastal Remedy with some friends and went on to record two full length albums. After ten years of ups and downs he made the decision to join his drummer and longtime friend in Nashville, Tennessee to try his hand at a solo career. Like many independent artist Max is just finding his way; no matter where life takes him music will always be a part of his journey. It's 1992. The 40th Army is long gone and the Soviet Union has collapsed, but war still rages across Afghanistan. As the Afghan communist regime crumbles, Ahmed Shah Massoud and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's forces clash in Kabul. While America turns its back and the Mujahideen turn on each other, new threats arise and threaten to sweep the old generation of freedom fighters away – The Taliban and Osama bin Laden. "In this piece we discuss our concerns around the broader “crypto” space beyond Bitcoin. Our arguments revolve around three primary themes: Philosophical, Technical, and Economic. From a philosophical perspective, we discuss the core properties that make Bitcoin work and that make it unique, in our view. From a technical perspective, we evaluate how these properties are lacking to a greater or lesser extent in alternative “cryptoassets,” having been designed out again on questionable philosophical justifications. From an economic perspective, we walkthrough our concerns that “crypto” has not shown a path to establishing a basis for justifiable real-world value, explain why we believe this would be very difficult to ever accomplish, and suggest therefore that their technical flaws are especially vulnerable. Given the complexity of the task we have set ourselves, this piece is intended to bring our arguments into long form and provide a discussion base for good faith disagreement." - Allen Farrington & Big Al Section Summaries: Part 1 - The Innovation From First Principles Part 2 - Crypto is Not Decentralized Part 3 - Crypto is Not Finance Part 4 - The "Investment" Rationale Part 5 - Layered Architecture and Gall's Law Part 6 - Why We Might Be Wrong Find the original work and further details in the appendices here: https://www.uncerto.com/only-the-strong-survive This unabridged reading was brought to you by the BitBox hardware wallet, the open source vault for your Bitcoin keys; The Fold Card, earn sats back rewards on everything you purchase; and Swan Bitcoin, the automatic Bitcoin purchase plan for every Bitcoiner. In this session we will examine the varied pathology of Transient Loss of Consciousness (TLOC), the definition, the causes, the sequalae, and the management. I wanted to also examine some of the key aspects of TLOC that are red flags and should be examined further within clinical practice. To do this I have Consultant Cardiologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer, Dr Nicholas Gall with me. In the episode we look at an established definition of TLOC, Nick's efforts to start a blackout pathway, the fundamental problem of TLOC in unpacking why undifferentiated TLOC can be a clinical minefield. We then examine the aetiology of TLOC and the diagnostic tools with which to differentiate the pathology (USS and ECG nuances). We then look at red flags warning signs and subtle information cues with TLOC, treatment of TLOC patients (broad take home messages) and clinical examples from practice. I hope you enjoy this episode with a fascinating and insightful guest.

Dr. Merav Vonshak is a former guest on the podcast from episode 7. Merav is an ecologist, naturalist, and citizen science organizer (see BioBlitz.club) located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Merav volunteers as a curator on iNaturalist, and has an astounding 42800 observations on iNaturalist. She has also lead a project to document and raise awareness about the tragically high roadkill mortality of pacific newts along Lexington reservoir in the San Francisco Bay Area.Merav is one of those people who has many fascinating projects and nature observations. But today, we're talking about her latest idea - Gall Week 2021, which is planned from October 2 to October 10 (yes, it is a week PLUS a bonus weekend!).The idea is to get everyone, regardless of naturalist ability, to get out and observe these fascinating creatures. If you aren't sure what a plant gall is, I can point back just two episodes ago to my interview with Adam Kranz covering all things galls. But the short answer is these are beautiful and sometimes bizarre growths on plant tissues induced by another organism, such as a wasp, midge, or many others. They often develop vivid colors and evocative shapes, and all have fascinating natural histories. These growths occur specifically to support the life cycle of the inducer, and are often induced in amazingly precise ways.Today Merav tells us about the project, how to participate, and has a few tips and tricks for documenting your observations.Full Show NotesLinks To Topics DiscussedGall Week 2021 iNaturalist Project - join this project so you can add it to your gall observationsBooks and Gall ResourcesGallformers.org - searchable (by host plant or gall) website with detailed descriptions of galls Plant Galls of the Western United States, by Ronald Russo – HIGHLY recommendediNaturalist Gall Projects:Galls of CaliforniaGalls of North AmericaLeaf and Plant Galls - a global project Merav has a pamphlet of San Francisco Bay Area galls

Fashion media plays a vital role by serving as a bridge between consumers and brands. However, as shoppers look to the media to understand the progress brands are making with sustainability, greenwashing is often perpetuated when journalists report on a brand's sustainability initiatives solely based on a press release that cherrypicks which information to share and often exaggerates claims to paint the brand in the best light. In this episode of Crash Course Fashion, Brittany Sierra chats with Marie Claire Style Director Julia Gall about the role of fashion media in fighting greenwashing, how she balances the needs of the publication (ads, affiliate links, pushing consumption, driving sales, etc.) with her personal ethos of sustainability. Finally, Julia shares her best crash course lessons for pitching the media and getting press. Show Notes: bit.lly/ccf-juliagall

As the CIA wages a covert proxy war against the Soviet 40th Army, the Mujahideen are showered with billions of dollars and cutting-edge weaponry. An old animosity between two prominent Mujahideen commanders – Ahmed Shah Massoud and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar - turns into a bitter, deadly rivalry. Meanwhile, Soviet reformers led by Mikhail Gorbachev attempt to extricate the USSR from Afghanistan with a shred of dignity intact. After the Soviet withdrawal, the world turns it back on Afghanistan as a civil war rages between the Mujahideen factions – and the Taliban emerges.  SOURCES: Ahmadi-Miller, Enjeela.
