Galls are among the most remarkable biological structures on our planet. The organisms that produce them are also extreme diverse and contribute a bewildering amount of biomass to their habitats. Some of the most fascinating gall makers are the gall wasps. This group of organisms is still woefully understudied but people like Dr. Louis Nastasi are trying to change that. Join us as we take a deep dive on gall wasps that specialize on herbaceous plants like the rosinweeds (Silphium spp.) and learn what these amazing little insects can teach us about biodiversity and evolution. He was born in Ireland to wealthy parents, who sent him to be educated at the Monastery of Bangor. There he embraced the ascetical life and became a monk. He was one of the twelve monks who traveled with his spiritual father St Columbanus (November 23) as missionaries to Gaul. In time some of the group traveled into pagan lands, up the Rhine river to Lake Zurich. The monks settled on Lake Constance around a chapel dedicated to St Aurelia, which had been taken by the pagans as a shrine; they cleansed and reconsecrated the chapel, which became the center of their new monastery. Saint Gall lived as a hermit, serving the brethren by making nets and catching fish. In 612 St Columbanus went on to Italy with most of his disciples, leaving St Gall and a few others to continue their life. When St Gall delivered Frideburga, the daughter of a local duke, from a demon, he offered the saint a tract of land on the shores of Lake Constance; here was founded the monastery that in later times bore St Gall's name. At various times, the holy Gall refused calls to become a bishop, or to take over the abbacy of the great monastery at Luxeuil. To all such requests he answered that he would rather serve than command. He continued living in his isolated monastic community until he reposed in peace in 640, at the age of ninety-nine. In later years, and continuing well into the middle ages, the Monastery of St Gall became famed for the holiness of its monks and for its library.

Andrew Gall walked away from a secure engineering career to challenge the industry's biggest perception problem: that engineers are box-ticking cost centres rather than creative partners in design. Andrew is the founding director of ARGALL, a structural and civil consultancy based in Melbourne, with over 15 years of technical expertise and an entrepreneurial mindset. He has positioned ARGALL as the partner of choice for progressive architects, developers, and councils across Australia. The firm is recognised for its next-generation thinking, combining sustainability, creativity, and operational maturity to deliver award-winning projects. If you're an engineering leader looking to grow without losing your values, this conversation is a blueprint for scaling smart, building a team that thinks differently, and proving that structural engineering can deliver both creativity and commercial success. XX. From the kitchens of medieval Europe to the orchards of Anglo-Saxon England, the apple became far more than just a fruit. It was medicine, it was myth, it was ritual. In part two of our apple series, John and Patrick explore how crab apples were pressed into sharp, sour verjuice to season everything from pigs' feet to plague remedies, how Anglo-Saxon charms and midwinter wassailing blended Christianity with ancient fertility rites, and how monks carried apple cuttings—and their spiritual symbolism—across the continent. From the orchard-cemeteries of St. Gall to the fruit catalogues of Charlemagne, apples became embedded in the medieval imagination. And just as they took root in law codes, legends, and royal gardens, they also crept into the realm of story—appearing in myths of archers, kings, and poisoned fruit. Join John and Patrick as they uncover how the humble apple became a cornerstone of medieval life, belief, and lore…----------In Sponsorship with J&K Fresh. The customs broker who is your fruit and veggies' personal bodyguard. Wednesday night, from the Oval Office, we were told "the left" is the source of all that's poisonous in our political discourse, ironically by one of the most venomous vitriolic pursed lips in American political history. Fast-forward to today when we awaken to those lips flapping on 'Fox & Friends' to reveal that "we have him," the shooting suspect in the Charlie Kirk assassination. What's noteworthy about that visit to the curved couch was when he had the audacity to say “the radicals on the right oftentimes are radical because they don't want to see crime. They don't want to see crime. They're saying: We don't want these people coming in; we don't want you burning our shopping centers; we don't want you shooting our people in the middle of the street."Sure, hindsight's 20/20, but so is collected data that shows alt-right white nationalism far and away leads all participants when it comes to political violence, but hey, he couldn't have known the suspect - Tyler Robinson - was allegedly a Nick Fuentes fanatic, aka a "groyper." Yeah, the same Nick Fuentes Donald dined with. Derp. More on that HERE and HERE. Not to be outdone, however, in the "tasting of shoe leather" competition is one Eric Erickson, the Omaha steak-hawking right wing radio provocateur who inherited many of his affiliates from the Rush Limbaugh I believed that sparked the ratcheting up of divisive and dangerous political rhetoric in this country. Eric penned an op/ed in the Atlanta Journal Constitution that hinted at "one side-ism," but had a markedly less partisan tone than his YouTube and in-show screed where he relentlessly finger-wagged at "the left" for it needing to police its own.Again, though, he popped off before the savvy folks on X who know a thing or two about Fuentes' groyper movement and had the ability to read into the subtle messaging on shell casings to connect the dots.

Welcome back Arthro-Poders! Today we chat with Louis Nastasi about gall wasps. Louis recently defended his PhD dissertation at Penn State, which focused on the herb gall wasps (Cynipidae: Aulacideini), especially species of Antistrophus on Silphium. A number of the chapters have already been published, including a catalogue of North American herb gall wasps, key to herb gall wasps and their inquilines, and a revision of the Antistrophus rufus species complex. We start with an introduction to galls and gall wasps, then talk about some of the specifics of his work. Show Notes You can find show notes on the blog.
