With Record Store Day 2025 in the books, we continue to feature some of the talented recording artists who make the records; and this week we have one of the all-time greats. Bob Mould has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in which he has frequently been the guitarist and singer fronting superb rock trios, starting in Minnesota with the seminal '80s indie band Hüsker Dü, and Sugar in the '90s. Bob has continued to record as a solo singer/songwriter who consistently delivers edgy and emotional guitar rock, which brings us to the topic of today's episode, Mould's 15th solo album, the recently released Here We Go Crazy (Granary Music / BMG) which finds Bob's signature blistering guitar and urgent vocals once again backed by his powerful and long-serving rhythm section of Jason Narducy on bass, and friend of the show, Jon Wurster on the drums. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. Originally aired on March 12, 2025: A 9-year-old saved his friend from choking on the basketball court. What life saving skills do you have ready to go? Plus, drummer Jon Wurster tells us about sitting behind the kit as Michael Shannon plays REM covers, and Steve's no hassle guide to getting through TSA. Join me as I chat with one of the great rock drummers of today, Jon Wurster. We talk about punk rock, cleaning windows, comedy, Ryan Adams, Tommy Keene, being in the right place at the right time and so much more. Great talk!
On this week's show, we spin a bumper crop of new music, bid adieu to some folks we're going to miss the crap out of, and try to muster up the courage to face the next four years with strength, grace and dignity. All this & much, much less. Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
We highly recommend that you go back and listen to our episode “Hello, Hello, Hello Jon Wurster” if you have not already. Jon Wurster is the drummer for The Mountain Goats and Bob Mould. He was the drummer for Superchunk for over three decades. He is also a comedy writer and performer, known best for his hilarious characters in The Best Show, including Ronald Thomas Clontle, the fictitious author of the book, Rock, Rot & Rule. Clontle claims that his book is the ultimate argument settler when it comes to deciding whether famous bands and musicians rock, rot, or rule. This interview brings to a close a story that has been over thirty years in the making. What's your most loved and least favorite song on Guided By Voices' 492nd album Bee Thousand?! Adam overcame his fear of assigning a 20 song record because he felt we needed to do more indie classics. Fun to hear his three co-hosts' take on a challenging 1994 lo-fi listen that was once named by Amazon music writers as the #1 indie album of all-time. We get a surprise Zoom visit from longtime 91X program director Garett Michaels (check out an extra ten minutes of his golden throat soon on Youtube) and remote opinions from Jon Wurster (Superchunk/Mountain Goats/Best Show) and Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows). In 2001 VH1 debuted the show Bands on the Run. It was a massive hit, yet it only lasted one season... We felt like it needed much more attention. In the wake of Flickerstick's reunion (long after Soulcracker, Harlow, and Josh Dodes threw in their towels), we have decided to break down this insanely dated time-capsule of what-the-f*ckedness and talk with other touring musicians, friends, and music journalists about what they got wrong and what they got right. For this episode Ian, Nat, and Ross are forced to close this chapter of their lives with a fond(ling?) look back with BOTR expert: Jon Wurster (the Mountain Goats, Bob Mould, The Best Show, and more). Hey we're WEEKLY now! This week, we continue to ramp up to Record Store Day (April 20) with another look at two special releases coming out on that special day. We'll hear from Rick and then hear from the drummer from the star-studded event itself, Jon Wurster (Bob Mould Band, Mountain Goats, Superchunk). Then ex-New York Dolls guitarist Steve Conte unveils his RSD release, The Concrete Jangle, most of which was co-written with friend of the show, Andy Partridge (XTC). The Record Store Day Podcast is written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Ever wondered what the hell Bob Mould, The Mountain Goats, Superchunk, Tom Scharpling, The Pretenders, Jay Farrar, Katy Perry, The New Pornographers, Margaret Cho, Rocket From The Crypt, Aimee Mann, Dave Grohl, Nick Cave, Guided By Voices, & R.E.M. could possibly have in common? On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got an episode for the drummers and those who like a great story: Jon Wurster and Stewart Copeland. Copeland is of course the drummer for the legendary, gazillion-selling Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Police, who were called “the biggest band in the world” during their mid-'80s heyday. Their hits have endured over the decades, too, and that's in no small part due to the special chemistry the trio enjoyed—and that chemistry, as you'll hear, often manifested itself in fights between Copeland and his old bandmate Sting. Copeland has made a fascinating career for himself since; he directed a documentary about his old band that made interesting use of their music, and he's got a new album and tour called Police Deranged for Orchestra, which features those classic songs redone in wild new ways. As you'll hear in this chat, Copeland also found a side career as a film composer, working on everything from Oliver Stone's Wall Street to the classic Francis Ford Coppola movie Rumble Fish. Check out a little bit of “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic“ from Police Deranged for Orchestra right here. Now the other half of this conversation is a drummer from a later era and, as you'll hear, a huge fan of Copeland's work. Jon Wurster is a renaissance man who's played most regularly with Superchunk, the Mountain Goats, and Bob Mould, but whose list of credits goes way beyond those amazing acts. He's also a comedy writer and half of the duo Scharpling and Wurster, which gave birth to some of the funniest characters in radio comedy ever. This summer, Wurster will tour with both Mountain Goats and Bob Mould, so chances are good that he'll be in a city near you. In this conversation, Wurster—as I had hoped he would—gets deep into specifics with Copeland, asking him right off the bat about a gig from the early 1980s. They also chat about how Copeland's orchestral tours actually work and about his forays into the soundtrack world—I had never heard the term “shit chord” before. They get into the fights that Copeland had with Police frontman Sting, and about how band therapy helped sort that all out. Wurster also gets a chance to ask about the lyrics to a deep cut called “On Any Other Day.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jon Wurster and Stewart Copeland for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
On the show this time, it's the detail driven divinations of The Mountain Goats. The Mountain Goats are a definitive independent band. John Darnielle has been releasing music under that name since 1991. He started out taping straight onto cassette, with a boombox, and over the years has returned to that medium - lo-fi for sure, but oddly high in emotional fidelity. He's also worked with engineers - in particular with Tiny Telephone's John Vanderslice, and is now equally comfortable with full-studio productions. The band has changed over the years too, but at the moment is a wonderfully cohesive group - Peter Hughes on bass, Matt Douglas on sax/keys and 2nd guitar, and rockin' Jon Wurster on drums. His latest is “Jenny From Thebes” - his 22nd full length album, and it's available on Merge Records. Recorded 08/08/2023. Jon Wurster started playing drums in Superchunk in the early 90s. He currently plays drums in The Mountain Goats and with Bob Mould. He also famously played the character Ronald Thomas Clontle on The Best Show with Tom Scharpling and declared that Madness invented ska! And Jon certainly jokes around about ska a lot, but when he was a teenager, he really loved the 2 Tone ska bands like The Specials and English Beat. He was also a big fan of The Hooters during their early 80s ska phase. And more recently, Jon skanked and played tambourine on stage during the infamous Ska No Children incident. (Sad Snack opened for The Mountain Goats in San Francisco and played their ska cover of "No Children.") We bring Jon on today to talk about ska. He tells us that he used to practice drums to the Dance Craze soundtrack. We talk about his connection to the band Dead Milkmen. (Amongst other things, he booked their first show!) We discuss his nickname Johnny Earthshoe and we talk about two key shows he attended with The Police. (The Specials and Rhoda Dakar were at one of them) He also tells us about missing his high school prom for The Meatmen, Ska band The Pressure Boys' connection to Superchunk, and we try to figure out the name of the ska artist that was featured on a DVD he owns (It turns out it was King Django) Support the show

The Dead Milkmen were odd ducks in Philadelphia's 1980s hardcore scene. They played really fast, but with a clean guitar channel, and wrote satirical--often strange and very imaginative--lyrics. It felt like they were almost a ska band. And in fact, they did have a few ska songs in their set like "If You Love Somebody, Set Them On Fire," "Little Man In My Head," "Gorilla Girl," and a cover of The Specials' "A Message To You, Rudy." Today, we bring on Dead Milkmen guitarist Joe Genaro. We talk about the band's relationship to ska, Joe's love for The Specials, The English Beat, Philly locals The Hooters, Operation Ivy and what it was like to play a LIVE 105 radio event with Skankin' Pickle (Along with Duran Duran and Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine.) We discuss their recent cover of Heaven 17's "(We Don't Need No) Fascist Groove Thang," which they turned into a ska song, the influential role of Dead Kennedys' In God We Trust, Inc, Joe's love for Dr. Demento and Weird Al (And how excited he was when he heard himself played on the Dr. Demento show), Why they mentioned drummer Jon Wurster in the song "Stewart," and we breakdown the recording of Big Lizard In My Backyard, and discuss some of the weirder promotional events Dead Milkmen did when "Punk Rock Girl" broke, including a bonkers performance on Club MTV with Downtown Julie Brown. Plus we discuss the band's excellent new album, Quaker City Quiet Pills, which was released on June 9th. Support the show

All this & much, much less!
Today's episode isn't about a specific documentary - instead, we're joined by Very Special Guest Jon Wurster to discuss some of his favorite music documentaries. Jon Wurster plays drums for Superchunk, The Mountain Goats, and Bob Mould (how did we forget to mention Bob Mould?), and has also played with artists as varied as (deep breath) Bob Dylan, R.E.M., Robert Pollard, Katie Perry, Charlie Daniels, Jay Farrar, The New Pornographers, Rocket From the Crypt, Ben Gibbard, and more! And he's also known for The Best Show with his comedy pal Tom Scharpling. And lots of other stuff! Jon is a great guy and we were thrilled to have him on our show. After a pandemic-induced hiatus, The Trap Set is back for Episode 300. Following the tradition of our previous centennial episodes, Joe is interviewed by a former guest--this time Jon Wurster (Bob Mould, Superchunk, The Mountain Goats, The Best Show). We at The Trap Set would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all of our guests and you--our listeners--for over seven years of support. Creating this show has been a transcendent experience. Onward!
We traipse down memory lane and discuss formative fanzines and rock mags with the hysterical Jon Wurster: Conflict, Forced Exposure, Motorbooty, No Depression, Trouser Press, and much more!
Here's the first episode of a new season of Fluxpod! Tom Scharpling is one of the best broadcasters in the world – he's the host of The Best Show, in which he frequently collaborates with his long-running comedy partner Jon Wurster, and the co-host of Double Threat along with Julie Klausner. This is a long and fun conversation that covers a lot of ground – the challenge of recording the audio book version of his memoir It Never Ends, how he and Jon have worked to keep the Best Show fresh for over 20 years, his relationship with Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young's bodies of work, and being terrified by Michael Stipe when he was a teenager in the early '80s. If you love Tom, this will be a big treat. If you don't know Tom... you're still probably going to have a good time with this one.
In addition to playing drums for Superchunk, The Mountain Goats and Bob Mould today's guest Jon Wurster is one of the funniest people on the planet as evidenced by his work with former HDWGW guest Tom Scharpling on The Best Show. On this episode we discuss first instruments, why unearned confidence is such good comedy fodder and what it's like to punish your musical idols on the road. Finally, we discuss Jonah's history as a teenage scam artist. Did he ever get caught and did he single-handedly put both Waldenbooks and Borders out of business? You'll have to listen to find out. We have recovered the lost Mister Heavenly interview with Carrboro's finest journalist, Tim Dibbins. As usual, Tim brings the truth to the surface, stopping at nothing to get to the core of songwriting, inner band relationships and what makes Mister Heavenly tick as a powerful trio. We see sides of Nick, Ryan and Joe that have never been revealed and though at times uncomfortable, this interview provides us with an insight that has been lazily overlooked by journalist since the bands inception. Let Tim lead you into the percussive depths of Mister Heavenly's motivation and creative essence. This week on Transmissions, Jon Wurster, the drummer of Mountain Goats, Bob Mould Band, and Superchunk and one-half of Scharpling and Wurster, the long running radio comedy duo as featured on The Best Show. In his wide-ranging talk with Jason Woodbury, he discusses growing up in Philadelphia during the birth of punk and alternative rock, working with Replacements producer Jim Dickinson in the mid-'80s, his experiences at Sun Records, getting the call to join Superchunk, and much more.
Mac McCaughan - "Dawn Bends" from the 2021 album The Sound of Yourself on Merge. Superchunk frontman and Merge Records co-founder Mac McCaughan returns this fall with his second solo album, The Sound of Yourself. The release features a slew of guests including Mary Lattimore, Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog), TORRES' Mackenzie Scott, Telekinesis' Michael Benjamin Lerner, Annie Hayden, his brother Matt McCaughan, and on today's Song of the Day, drummer Jon Wurster and Yo La Tengo. ("I am aware of the irony of an album called The Sound Of Yourself with this many guests on it!," he shares in a press release.) Like many great albums coming out right now, The Sound Of Yourself came out of the lockdown. "Each day is blurring into the next, so what are we doing today?” he would ask himself during the pandemic. “How can I disrupt this? I think what resulted was a theme of subdued… ‘joy' is the wrong word, but it's at least comforting if not propulsive to have something open-ended to work on every day without any kind of structure or deadline or rules.” The Sound of Yourself will be out September 24th via Merge Records (of course). Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with Jon Wurster of Superchunk, Mountain Goats, Bob Mould and of Best Show fame! We talked about The Clash's 1979 album London Calling. Big fan of Jon Wuster's music & comedy, so it was a huge honor. Honestly bummed we didn't talk about Bob Mould & our love of Husker Du, but I guess there's always next time! Superchunk are reissuing their 2001 album, "Here's to Shutting Up," a very underrated album in their catalog. Preorder it now from Merge Records! https://superchunk.bandcamp.com/album/heres-to-shutting-up
On today's episode I talk to musician Jason Narducy. Jason began his rock career at the age of ten when he co-founded the band Verböten – one of the seminal acts in the Chicago punk scene. He then went on to become frontman/songwriter/guitarist for Verbow, another beloved Windy City outfit who signed a major-label deal with Epic/Sony during the ‘90s alt-rock bubble and followed that up with an ongoing, nearly decade-long run as indie-rock's secret weapon – serving as bassist and backing vocalist for indie-underground icons like Bob Mould, Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices, Telekinesis and Superchunk. In 2011, Jason started writing his own music again as Split Single, with Spoon's Britt Daniel and Superchunk's Jon Wurster as his backing band. He's released two albums as Split Single, Fragmented World in 2014 and his latest Metal Frames, which is just lovely. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
Comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait assures us that he is indeed alive — and he's making indie movies. Pocket square aficionado Jon Wurster takes us through his peculiar career path, starting out as an indie rock drummer and becoming a pioneer in the world of comedy podcasts. We also go undercover with The Hold Steady.
Kenan Thompson was on his way to a pitch meeting at Saturday Night Live when he stopped by Marc's hotel room to talk about The Mighty Ducks, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, and Lorne Michaels' handlebar moustache. Plus, Marc has a chat with Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster about the massive new box set that chronicles 14 years of their comedy. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. In honor of The Best Show on WFMU ending its run of 13 glorious years, I'm revisiting my conversations with Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster. The show has been such a huge influence on me – not just as a guy on the radio, but as a human being who loves ridiculous, endearing, hilarious things.
For fans of pocket squares, perfect timekeeping and weekly phone call-based comedy, Jon Wurster is about as high profile as it gets. It was a pleasure to sit down with him before Forecastle Fest and try to figure out exactly what makes him tick (here's a hint: it doesn't involve practice).
On today's show we talk to the primary member of the band The Mountain Goats, John Darnielle. John first started The Mountain Goats in college, originally as a lo-fi solo act, but since 2002 has recorded with a full band, which often includes Jon Wurster of Superchunk. Highly literate, emotionally intelligent and with a background in poetry, Darnielle has been referred to by New Yorker critic Sasha Frere-Jones as "America's best lyricist." A few weeks ago, I left work for a "doctor's appointment" to meet John in a studio in midtown to talk about day jobs, Marxism, acolytic thought and then we get in deep about the act of creating!Subscribe on iTunes and come see Beginnings: Live at UCB East on October 9th at 8pm with musical guests Cymbals Eat Guitars + more! Tom Scharpling is the host of the weekly-call in program The Best Show on WFMU. Tom is also one of the best straight men in comedy, and uses his skills in the duo Scharpling and Wurster. Recently Tom has begun to direct music videos for groups like Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and The New Pornographers, and on this episode of Field Guide we talk about the trailer he made for John Hodgman's new book. If you want to check out Tom's full interview, why not listen to the last episode?
