On today's episode, I talk to musician John Davis. Growing up in Cambridge, MA, John formed The Folk Implosion with Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr.'s Lou Barlow in the early 1990s. Their first album 1994's Take a Look Inside was a brilliant lo-fi pop record, and then a year later, a song of theirs on the Kids soundtrack blew up, and in the diverse atmosphere that had been created in Nirvana's wake, the band was noticed by a number of larger labels. Their third album would be released by Interscope, after which John left the band. As a solo artist, John has released many albums under different names on labels like Shrimper, and just last year, Lou and he got back together to make a new Folk Implosion album. Walk Thru Me was released on Joyful Noise last June, and it is quite wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. PROG SUPERGROUP COSMIC CATHEDRAL RELEASING DEBUT ALBUM FEATURING NEAL MORSE…CHESTER THOMPSON…PHIL KAEGGY…BYRON HOUSE… ZOOM SPECIAL EDITION WITH EX GENESIS DRUMMER CHESTER THOMPSON ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS Hello everyone and we are back for another edition of Interviewing the Legends… I'm your host Ray Shasho. How do you make an album that is different to what is usually expected of you? One answer is to work with musicians who also have decades of experience and worldwide recognition, plant a few seeds, then stand back and see what happens. For the Cosmic Cathedral project and their debut album ‘Deep Water', this is exactly what Neal Morse did, joining up with Chester Thompson, Phil Keaggy & Byron House. As Keaggy comments: “It was an honor to be invited and included in the making of the Deep Water project with Neal, Chester and Byron.” Much of the album was created from jam sessions where Morse's long-time audio partner Jerry Guidroz put the best parts together, then Morse and the band developed them into songs and epics. “Much of the album, and certainly “Time To Fly”, came directly from the jam sessions, where we were spontaneously creating in the room. Even a lot of the lyrics just came out of our mouths! It was amazing!” What resulted from all this was a more groove-orientated feel, which Morse calls a “prog meets yacht rock meets The Beatles” kind of album, with an unmistakable jazz fusion influence: “These guys are real groovers: even if they're playing proggy stuff, it has more of a Steely Dan feel to it, but when Phil and I start singing it sounds like The Beatles! In Deep Water, the ‘New Revelation' section is based on a jam that turned into something that could have been on a Sting album! So, there's a lot of variety here.” And Chester Thompson says, “I am super excited for people to hear this album. There was great communication between all the players. One of my favorite projects I've ever been a part of!” And coming from someone who's played with Genesis and Frank Zappa, that's quite a statement! The album will be available as a Limited CD Digipak, Gatefold 2LP & as Digital Album. Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about someone who is one of the most well-liked celebrities alive: Queen Latifah! Our guest today is KT from the great podcast "For Your Reference." Our B-Sides today are: Living Out Loud, Last Holiday, Just Wright, and Joyful Noise. We also discuss Queen's book, her iconic BET Lifetime Achievement Award Speech, her music career, and her chances of making it to E.G.O.T. status. There's lively discussion about her undeniable, universal likeability, her impeccable taste in leading men, a deep appreciation for Michael Ealy, and complements to Queen's performance in Bessie. There's respect paid to the full life she's lived, there's criticism levelled at the basketball Common plays in Just Wright, as well as a thorough discussion of Paula Patton's contributions to the film. We marvel at the ‘90s sheen of Living Out Loud and the timelessness of Last Holiday's message and positive energy. And, finally, there's that scene between Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton in Joyful Noise. Be sure to give us a follow on social at @TFSBSide. We wrap up our Christmas series “Joyful Noise” by asking the question: “Is it possible for you to still… Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?” The truth is that while Christmas is a wonderful time celebrating the birth of Christ, it can also be challenging. Perhaps Christmas brings up memories of lost loved ones or hardship in your family. But there is a way to make Christmas merry, no matter your circumstances. Need Prayer?

On today's episode, I talk to musician Karou Ishibashi AKA Kishi Bashi. Originally from Seattle, Washington, Karou grew up in Norfolk, Virginia and although he wanted to make music professionally, it wasn't until he flunked out of college that he began to pursue it in earnest. In 2003, he formed the band Jupiter One, and they were together for a decade and released three albums. Also, during this time, he was a member of Of Montreal for a number of years. In 2011 though, Karou released his first album as Kishi Bashi, 151a, on Joyful Noise, which has been his label ever since. His fifth album Kantos was just released at the end of August, and it is fantastic! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. Little compares to the powerful spiritual force of joining voices to harmonize in songs of freedom. It's a transformative occasion when done with the fullness of our being that creates a sense of communal solidarity. We become part of something larger than ourselves. It plants the seeds of hope and compassion in the face of face of oppression and injustice. John Driver continues our series on Psalm 100, focusing on verse 4: "Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and call upon his Name.” In all of our days, there is both an invitation from God and a pathway provided by Him to moves us past whatever gates may make us feel distant from Him, specifically through practices of gratitude and single-hearted praise. John Driver explores verse 3 of Psalm 100, specifically what it means to: "Know this: The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us, and we are his.” The daily life in Christ is a process not of knowing Him in order to solve the divine mystery, but knowing Him in order to continually grow in experience and intimacy within the divine mystery. In this one short phrase in Psalms 100, we are asked to sing. There is an unfortunate perspective that singing is only for those who are capable. Yet, singing is one of the most intrinsic values of our spiritual well-being, allowing us to connect with the things of the Father, daily life in Christ, and spiritual health. Today, the Spotlight shines on clarinetist, penny whistle player, composer, improviser, and educator James Falzone.James and I have been collaborating on an upcoming live event, Improvisation in Music and Life, taking place on June 22 at the Royal Room in Seattle. This will be a unique program of performance and conversation between me and the five-piece James Falzone Division Ensemble. We will explore the nature of improvisation in music and how its principles can be useful in all aspects of life, not just for musicians. Tickets are available at theroyalroomseattle.com. We recorded this talk in person in a very special space at Cornish College, where James is both a Dean and Professor of Music. It was a thrill to consider that I passed through rooms where John Cage and Merce Cunningham likely met or spent time. James and I spoke for nearly two hours. Making a joyful noise doesn't necessarily mean we need to shout, but we can have a joyful battle cry in our hearts that will propel us into a grateful attitude. If you woke up today with worries on your mind instead of a joyful noise in your heart, it's never too late to turn it around.
