Form of contemplative photography

In this podcast, Jenny and Hѐlen discuss the Dharma Art of Miksang, a form of contemplative photography, and its role as a spiritual practice on the path of beauty.Hѐlen describes how difficulties in her life led her to the Dharma Arts and Shambhala Buddhism. Miksang practice starts from being open and available. We have a tendency to overlook moments of pure, fresh seeing, and conceptualise what we see, giving everything a name and a form. In Miksang, instead of photographing objects, we express the simple, direct and brilliant experience of a flash of perception, before the mind has applied any concepts to it. It's an effortless way of meeting the sacred world at any moment during daily life. When we let go of likes and dislikes, good and bad, and the egoic desire to create a beautiful photo, we discover beauty all around us, shining in the ordinary. To find out more about Hѐlen and the Dharma Art of Miksang, including details of her online and European events you can visit her website here: https://miksang.euThe quarryfarm.com website contains examples of photos produced during the Miksang training courses that Jenny attended with Hѐlen.Support the showIf you are interested in exploring spiritual awakening, we invite you to register for our free 7 Days to Awakening self study course, created by Lisa Natoli and Bill Free.Learn more about the The Awareness Podcast and access show notes for every episode at: www.teachersofgod.org/podcastLearn more about The Teachers of God Foundation at: www.teachersofgod.org Original music by Omashar

Podcast host Amy Chavez talks to Robert Weis, curator of the Luxembourg Natural History Museum's upcoming exhibit, “Spirit of Shizen – The Nature of Japan through 72 Seasons,” running from July 1 to August 31, 2022. An accompanying catalogue, in the form of an anthology, will be published featuring essays by prominent writers on Japan's seasons.Amy starts off the show asking Weis, a paleontologist, how he ended up curating the exhibition “Spirit of Shizen” Weis explains his childhood fascination with fossils, his work at the museum, and his love for Japan. He says Mark Horvane, a Kyoto-based garden designer, was an adviser to the exhibition.Amy expounds upon the meaning of "72-microseasons" as outlined in Mark Horvane's essay of the same title included in the museum catalogue/anthology.While some Japanese arts and activities have obvious links to nature, such as Ikebana flower arrangement, bonsai, gardens or cherry-blossom viewing, Weis notes that other links may not be so obvious, such as those in haiku poetry, Japanese sweets, or even the passing of time. These tie-ins to the seasons will brought into focus via workshops, demonstrations, and a publication that focuses on Japanese culture and nature.Workshops include a Miksang contemporary photography workshop with John Einarsen, a calligraphy session by Japanese artist Rie Takeda, an exploration into the tea ceremony by Bruce Hamana, and a workshop on the seasons as related to Zen, presented by French Buddhist nun and author Kankyo Tannier. A movie, produced by Felicity Tillack especially for the exhibition, will delve into the seasons of Kyoto, and a gastronomic event coordinated with a local Japanese restaurant will look at the role of the seasons in Japanese cuisine. Visitors can enjoy a mock tea-house with tatami mats or enjoy tea in the museum's garden."Spirit of Shizen" (shizen means "nature" in Japanese), also offers an accompanying catalog/anthology of essays penned by prominent writers on Japan. The publication will be available in the Museum Store and as an online purchase.Following is the contents of the publication, which is divided into four parts, with Pico Iyer penning an introductory essay for each section/season."Spirit of Shizen" AnthologyTable of ContentsAUTUMN – Radiant Wistfulness, by Pico IyerMomiji-gari - Tracking Down the Colored Leaves, by Rebecca OtowaA Late Autumn Walk in Nara, by Robert WeisNaturally Attuned to the Seasons, by Edward LevinsonThe Japanese 72 Micro-seasons, by Mark HovaneWINTER – Blue Invigoration, by Pico IyerFirst Winter in Ohara, by Patrick ColganOntakesan - Seasonal Elements of a Sacred Japanese Mountain, by Jann WilliamsKigo: Seasonal Words and Seasonality in Haiku, by Kawaharada MayumiNature is Culture, by Sébastien RaizerSPRING – Pink-and-white Flutter, by Pico IyerPetals on a Wet Black Bough, by Amanda HugginsSakura, by Naoko AbeSeasons of the Seto Inland Sea, by Amy ChavezThe Beauty of Japanese Gardens, by Yuri UgayayaSUMMER – Festivals in the Sultry Nights, by Pico IyerThe Message in the Garden, by Marc Peter KeaneAwareness of the Seasons in the Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu), by Bruce HamanaMosses for the Ages, by Karen Lee TawarayamaNotes on Ikebana, by Mark HovaneTsuyu – Between the Sheets, by Edward J. She has used multiple practices in her healing journey, including therapy, yoga, meditation, being in nature, and creative expression (art, photography, and writing poetry, fiction and non-fiction). With Effortless Beauty, Julie DuBose brings a new perspective to photography. She talks in an intimate way not just about how we express our experience with our camera, but about a whole new and fresh way to experience our visual world altogether. She guides us through the process of seeing without our usual habitual ways of experiencing what we see, so that we can have vivid, mind-stopping visual perceptions, and express those perceptions exactly as we see them. Julie DuBose has been a practitioner of Miksang Contemplative Photography since 1998. She studied with Michael Wood, the founder of the Miksang Training course of study and practice, and began teaching courses with him in 2005. Together they have developed the Miksang Training curriculum and have taught in North America and Europe. In 2009 Julie co-founded The Miksang Institute for Contemplative Photography in Boulder, Colorado. In addition to courses held in various locations in the US and Canada, each summer The Miksang Institute hosts a three week intensive course of study on the principles and practice of contemplative photography. Miksang Publications was founded in 2010 to produce print and digital books on the practice of Miksang Contemplative Photography and related art forms.
