Hello listeners and welcome back to the victim to victor podcast, my name is Anu and I am your host. In this podcast episode I have Developmental Neuroscientist Dr Denise Bossarte back on my show and we will be discussing the impacts of trauma on relationships. This is Part 2 of a joint series which we will be hosting for trauma survivors and we look forward to serving.Traumatic incidents that occur before the age of 18 can have a significant impact on relationships with oneself and others later on in life. Traumas can lead us to choose unhealthy partners and can leave us with insecurities and feelings of being undeserving of love. Trauma survivors also tend to put up with more undeserving behaviours from partners, making excuses for bad behaviours.  Setting boundaries can become a challenge. In this talk, we will look at how trauma affects one's identity formation, including the loss of childhood, missing parts of oneself, attraction to destructive relationships, avoidance of relationships, avoidance of oneself, difficulty integrating emotions into one's identity and emotional dysregulation. Many survivors tend to have rigid, negative beliefs about relationships and it is common for oneself to be triggered into traumatized states - “fight, flight, or freeze” when we encounter situations that remind us of the original trauma, ongoing stressors or situations which our brain deems important for physical/emotional survival.Attachment styles can influence how we communicate with others, and how we handle separations, arguments and intimacy. In this talk, we will discuss a few of the attachment styles as well as shame-based responses which can make us hide important parts of ourselves from our partners. We may put up a “wall” or mask our insecurities by attacking others or overcompensating.Dr Denise Bossarte is a poet and an award-winning writer, photographer, and artist. Denise is a certified meditation facilitator and contemplative arts teacher and holds a PhD in developmental neuroscience. And she is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Hi listeners, this is part 1 of a joint series which myself and Dr Denise Bossarte will be recording for trauma survivors. We will be covering a range of topics which highlight areas of our lives with which we both struggled as a consequence of the trauma that we endured. Topics will include; burnout & resilience, gaining self awareness, difficulty with relationships, overcoming shame, becoming comfortable with sharing your story.....and much more.Part 1: Burnout & ResilienceDo you feel overwhelmed with work and personal commitments? Burnout is common amongst trauma survivors and is the state of mind which arises from long-term, unresolved stress. Do you struggle to adapt and bounce back when things don't go as planned? If you lack resilience, you might dwell on problems, feel victimized, become overwhelmed or turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse. Resilient people harness inner strength that helps them rebound from a setback or challenge. They don't wallow or dwell on failures; they acknowledge the situation, learn from their mistakes, and then move forward. In this podcast episode, we will discuss our own experiences and ways in which you can avoid burnout and on how to improve resilience.Dr Denise Bossarte is a poet and an award-winning writer, photographer, and artist. Tonight's special guest is Denise Bossarte from Houston, Texas, abused by her maternal grandfather beginning in elementary school. She explains, "I was always afraid to be alone around my grandfather although I never really understood why as a child. I went from an outgoing, creative kid to a shy, ashamed kid afraid of people. The abuse lasted until I was in high school." Denise says, "I still carry a lot of stress in my body, my body remembers being afraid and is constantly prepared for getting hurt again. I am no longer in therapy but went through individual and group therapy in college and grad school." Denise is one of two daughters. "My father was an M.D. and my mother has a graduate degree and ran a dog kennel as I was growing up. I was deeply ashamed and felt I was a bad kid and that it was my fault; there was something really wrong with me for it to happen. My grandfather got prostate cancer and died when I was a freshman in high school." Denise is quite the author, as explained by her web site, 'Thriving After'. Whether writing on overcoming trauma in her nonfiction work or recasting her real-life experiences into award-winning dark urban fantasy in four novels—Glamorous, Beginnings, Return, and Readings—Denise tackles the dark side of things with courage, fearlessness, and compassion. Her self-published book Glamorous was a bronze medalist in 2019's The Wishing Shelf Book Awards in Adult Fiction, and her success with Glamorous earned her membership into the Horror Writers Association and the International Thriller Writers.

Denise Bossarte Is a survirvor of sexual abuse and has spent her adulthood healing herself from the abuse she has experienced in life. She is an award-winning writer, author and photographer and certified mediation facilitator and holds a PhD in Neuroscience. Her Past StoryHer mother’s father was the source of sexual abuse to her as a young child. “It mostly happened when we spent the summers with my grandparents on the lake.” her parents didn’t know what was happening, and the abuse continued until her sophomore year in high school when her grandfather died. “I learned to disassociate from my body when the abuse was happening and really disconnected in many ways to survive.Denise’s memories came flooding back after her grandfather died, and she had to learn how to process her trauma. Because she had accolades at school for being a good student, Denise latched onto her schooling for positive reinforcement. She kept herself busy so she wouldn’t have to deal with the trauma.First RelationshipShe started dating late in high school and into college, where she met her first serious boyfriend, a former alcoholic. Denise told her boyfriend about her abuse, and he realized she needed help and assisted her in getting help. “That was the first time I was able to go to a counselor who got me into a group of women survivors.” She learned how many others had gone through sexual trauma and found out that her talk therapy wasn’t enough to move forward in her life.Alternative Modalities for Healing TraumaDenise explored and tried many different alternative healing modalities such as mediation and yoga. While experimenting with healing modalities, she found a system that worked for her in her healing journey. Why Write Her Book on AbuseWhen Denise heard the story of the gymnast who had been sexually abused, this triggered her to write her story. She has coined the term “Thriver” as she wanted her story to feel that she moved beyond her abuse and is now enjoying herself and her life.Resources MentionedVisit Denise on the webJoin Me on Speak Loud PlatformSpeak Loud Podcast on the webSpread the message of Speak Loudly Podcast andshare this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only.
