What began as "Russian Mountains" evolved across Europe, and eventually, found their way to the good ol' U.S. of A... In 1884, one man wanted to use his vast fortune--NO! Not to help anyone!--to keep a recently re-unioned American population from getting too drunk, too horny, and too gambly...

Hoe moeten we de man precies kaderen? Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded conversation with Roger Jackson, author of Saraha – Poet of Blissful Awareness, published this year by Shambhala as part of its Lives of the Masters series. Saraha, “the Archer,” was a mysterious but influential tenth-century Indian Buddhist tantric adept who expressed his spiritual realization in mystic songs (dohas) that are enlightening, shocking, and confounding by turns. Saraha's poetic verses served as a basis for the exposition, in Tibet, of mahamudra, the great-seal meditation on the nature of mind that permeates every tradition of Buddhism on the Tibetan plateau. This is the first book to attempt a thorough treatment of the context, life, works, poetics, and teachings of Saraha. Roger Jackson is Professor Emeritus of Asian Studies and Religion at Carleton College. He has nearly 50 years of experience with the study and practice of Buddhism, particularly in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. His special interests include Indian and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and ritual; Buddhist religious poetry; religion and society in Sri Lanka; the study of mysticism; and contemporary Buddhist thought. Roger is a highly respected and beloved scholar, Dharma teacher, and writer. The life and works of the mysterious Indian yogin, Saraha, who has inspired Buddhist practitioners for over a thousand years. Saraha, “the Archer,” was a mysterious but influential tenth-century Indian Buddhist tantric adept who expressed his spiritual realization in mystic songs (dohās) that are enlightening, shocking, and confounding by turns.  Saraha: Poet of Blissful Awareness (Shambhala, 2024) is the first book to attempt a thorough treatment of the context, life, works, poetics, and teachings of Saraha. It features a search for the “historical” Saraha through evidence provided by our knowledge of the medieval Indian context in which he likely lived, the biographical legends that grew up around him in Tibet, and the works attributed to him in Indic and Tibetan text collections; a consideration of the various guises in which Saraha appears in his writings (as poet, social and religious critic, radical gnostic thinker, and more); an overview of Saraha's poetic and religious legacy in South Asia and beyond; and complete or partial translations, from Tibetan, of over two dozen works attributed to Saraha. These include nearly all his spiritual songs, from his well-known Dohā Trilogy to obscure but important expositions of mahāmudrā, as well as several previously untranslated works. Hollow Earth – Part Two Episode Description: In Part 2 of our Hollow Earth deep dive, we move beyond the theories and history into the wildest and most mind-bending claims of all. Who (or what) is living down there? Are we talking giants, dinosaurs, or even entire civilizations with advanced technology? We explore modern claims, conspiracy theories about government suppression, and bizarre expeditions that sought to "prove" Hollow Earth is real. If you thought Part 1 was wild, Part 2 takes it to an entirely new level. Episode Highlights: Giants in Hollow Earth — Hopi legends, the Book of Enoch's Nephilim, and Native American tales of underground red-haired giants. Dinosaurs Underground? — From “The Lost World” to modern cryptid sightings, we look at theories about prehistoric creatures surviving in underground ecosystems. Advanced Civilizations — Take a trip to Agartha, Shambhala, and Hyperborea, three of the most famous underground utopias linked to Hollow Earth theory. Government Secrets & Military Suppression — Claims of restricted access in Antarctica, secret military bases near the poles, and government attempts to cover up the entrances to Hollow Earth. Modern Explorations — We take a look at recent attempts to “find” Hollow Earth, including failed expeditions led by figures like Dr. Brooks Agnew. Wildest Theories of All — The most extreme claims about what might be hidden underground, from futuristic underground metropolises to theories of ancient beings influencing surface world events. Don't Miss the Craziest Claims! We save the strangest, most mind-bending claims for last. If you thought the idea of dinosaurs, giants, and government cover-ups was wild, wait until you hear some of these theories.

Most of the questions I get asked while traveling revolve around my writing process or publishing journey. So, in this episode, I share my life-altering journey, explaining how a personal health challenge led me to discover Ayurveda and inspired me to write books to spread its wisdom. So, whether you dream of writing a book, are busy working on one, or are curious about the writing and publishing process, this episode is a must-listen.Join me. You may even find the spark to turn your writing ideas into reality! My Health Struggles When I was 20, I traveled to India, eager for adventure, but my health was a mess. I dealt with parasites, a weakened immune system, and gut issues and took antibiotics like Flagyl, which wrecked my digestive system. After I returned to India to seek treatment, a doctor in Mysore introduced me to the ancient Ayurvedic healing system. The Ayurvedic ExperienceI underwent Panchakarma, a powerful Ayurvedic detox that included oil rubdowns, milk pours, enemas, and a simple Kitchari diet. The experience was intense but transformative. It gave me a deeper understanding of Ayurveda and sparked my curiosity to learn more.Combining Yoga and AyurvedaI spent time teaching yoga and Ayurveda, balancing my time between India and the U.S. I started sharing simple Ayurvedic practices with my students, like tongue scraping and drinking hot water. I also noticed how confused many people were about food, so I wrote a cookbook. The Everyday Ayurveda CookbookWhen an editor from Shambhala Publications contacted me, I knew it was time to turn my ideas into a book. So, I wrote The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook. It contains simple, seasonal recipes to help people understand how food can be medicine. The Publishing JourneyThe publishing process was not easy. It involved testing recipes, balancing the Ayurvedic philosophy, and ensuring it was user-friendly and accessible. I worked closely with a designer to create a visually appealing and informative book. The cookbook came out in 2015, and in 2025, I will release a 10th-anniversary edition of The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook, with new recipes and a foreword by Amadeo Morning Star. Mind-Body Connection and the Second BookAs I continued working with people, I realized how much the mind influences our health and food choices. That led me to write my second book, Everyday Ayurvedic Cooking for a Calm, Clear Mind, about how Ayurveda can help us create mental calm and clarity, which supports our overall well-being.Writing in IndiaWhen in India, I have more time to write as there are fewer distractions. I get a lot of inspiration in India, especially from local food markets and healthy restaurants. The Struggles of Writing the Front MatterWriting the front matter for Calm, Clear Mind took me a year. Writing about the mind is tricky, complex, and often murky. I worked closely with my partner, Rich, who has experience with psychological work, to ensure the language was non-judgmental. Research and Inspiration from TextsI could not find many Ayurvedic resources on the mind, so I dug deep into texts like the Bhagavad Gita, which explores the connection between food and the mind. After extensive research, I also found insights from various yogic and Vedic texts that shaped my approach to writing about the mind. The Challenge of PublishingPublishing with Shambhala has been a rewarding experience for me. The vulnerability of handing over my work for the first time was a huge emotional challenge, but working with a trustworthy publisher made things easier. I published all four of my books with them because I trust their artistic vision and respect...

How can we continue to stretch our sense of loving-kindness to include all beings? In this talk, Dave Richo explores the practice of loving-kindness (metta) in Buddhism, emphasizing its expansive nature. Using an analogy from Romeo and Juliet, Dave explains that love is boundless, reaching beyond our immediate relationships to encompass all beings. He introduces the concept of concentric circles, where love radiates from ourselves to our close ones, those we are neutral toward, marginalized individuals, and even those we struggle with, eventually encompassing all beings. The core idea is that as we give love, it grows in abundance, benefiting both us and others.Dave encourages us to include in our loving-kindness practice:Self-love: Starting with extending kindness to ourselves, as we can't offer to others what we don't have.Expanding circles: Extending love outward from family and friends to neighbors, marginalized groups, and enemies.Compassion for all beings: Wishing well even to those who harm us, recognizing that everyone seeks happiness and is capable of transformation. By cultivating this mindset daily, we can contribute to a more just, peaceful, and loving world.______________David Richo, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist, writer, and workshop leader. He shares his time between Santa Barbara and San Francisco, California. Dave combines psychological and spiritual perspectives in his work. One of the things that deepens our suffering is our attempt to make everything make sense. That's how we get trapped in delusion, trying to make it make sense when instead we are trying to transcend it.” – Lama Rod OwensSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

//Literatur - Barbara M.
