This is Nicole's penultimate episode of the podcast, so we knew our guest had to be someone extra-special! For over a decade, this incredible human being has been extremely close to Nicole and her family; so much so that he performed Nicole and Gustav's wedding in Scotland, and Nicole's sister's Memorial Service. Now, after *countless* mentions on the pod over the years, we finally sit down with the man, the myth, the legend, the REVEREND: Mark Montgomery! Mark discusses his small town South Carolina conservative Christian upbringing, and tells the "gayer than gay" story of how he came out to his mother at her hospital bedside (let's just say Steel Magnolias was involved). We talk faith vs. religion, Mark shares some "practical theology" you can use when confronted by intolerant Bible thumpers, and we take a deep dive into the misinterpretation of the oft-cited Sodom and Gomorrah story! This is an episode that you won't want to miss (and that you *will* want to send to your conservative family members)...Mark gives an incorrect handle at the end of this ep, so make sure you *actually* follow him on Instagram at @markdmontgomery (and feel free to reach out)! Some of the people and resources he mentions during this episode include the United Church of Christ's website (ucc.org), Janie Spahr (https://lgbtqreligiousarchives.org/profiles/jane-adams-spahr), and More Light Presbyterians (mlp.org).This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5207650/advertisement
Dan is on vacation this week, so we are happy to present Brad's interview with Rev. Alex McNeill, which is part of the special series ONE NATION ALL BELIEFS. Rev. McNeill is a white, queer, transgender man, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. Rev. McNeill served as the executive director of More Light Presbyterians for over eight years. There, he empowered faith leaders to welcome LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC neighbors into worship communities and to advocate for justice in their broader secular communities. Alex has worked to elect LGBTQIA+ leaders, advocated for reproductive justice, and won state, national, and denominational legislation affirming and protecting the rights and dignities of queer and trans people. Before earning a Master's of Divinity from Harvard University, Alex got his start in LGBTQIA+ and reproductive rights activism as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Debbie B Celebrating Queerness “God created us all and declared that we were good and that includes all of who you are, your gender identity, your sexuality, all of that. No one can take away God's love for you, no matter how they try.” In this episode of Called to be Bad, I talk with Debbie B about what it would look like to move from tolerance/acceptance/inclusion to celebration. Debbie B is a seminary student working on her Master of Divinity. She is called to be a pastor and desires to serve marginalized people. After seminary she hopes to be a pastor in a church that cares for the marginalized in radical ways and celebrates the gifts that queer people bring to the church. Questions for the Week: What is an experience that you had which either deepened your faith or gave you a new perspective on God, faith or church? Why are both church and football on Sundays? If Sunday is a day of rest, how can players play on that day? Or is it because watching football is "rest" for everyone else? In this episode, I talk with Eliana Maxim and Scott Lumsden, Co-Executive Presbyters of Seattle Presbytery. In Presbyterian-Speak, they help to support churches and pastors in the Seattle area. I spoke with them because they were one of the early areas to respond to COVID-19 and offer guidance to local congregations. In segment one, they give some background to the situation in Seattle and how they came to the place to ask churches to cancel their services. Segment two, we talk about pastors and church leaders, the struggles they face, and the gifts they already possess. Jess and Alex both identify as transgender and in this reading put the trans in transfiguration. They explore ways to resist using old labels for new ways of being embodied in the world, and how the simple act of being yourself can be a vision of liberation.
