She takes us on a trip through the region, delving into the complex realities that exist beneath the stereotypes. Intertwining conversations and stories from her journey in the present with powerful—but underrepresented—moments from history, Perry illustrates how the real, rebellious, intensely creative people of the South have led movements for civil rights in every generation. The Poor People's Campaign has announced a “season of nonviolent, moral direct action,” targeting the U.S. Senate with disruptive activities every Monday through Aug 2. According to the campaign's co-chair, the Rev. William Barber II, “The Senate must end the filibuster, protect and expand voting rights, and pass a minimum wage of an hour.” Barber is getting national attention. Even President Joe Biden recorded a video expressing his support. Concern about poverty is something we all share. Today on Sojourner Truth: Across the Western Hemisphere, Indigenous environmental activists are under attack. They face violence and repression as they continue to defend their water and lands from right-wing governments and extractivist multinational companies. In Chile, the Indigenous Mapuche people have been leading the charge when it comes to defending protected environmental areas from occupying forces. Back in June, Mapuche land rights defender Alberto Curamil was seriously injured in a shooting by police. Meanwhile, in Honduras, a U.S.-trained former Honduran army intelligence officer was recently found guilty over the assassination of Indigenous Lenca environmental activist Berta Caceres. Roberto David Castillo, the president of an internationally-financed hydroelectric company, was found guilty of being co-collaborator in ordering the murder. Our guest is Francisca Stuardo, a Santiago-based consultant for the international climate advocacy group Global Witness. She works on their land and environmental defenders campaign, which highlights threats against activists and pushes businesses, financiers and governments to protect them. On Monday, July 12, the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival announced that it will launch a month of Moral Mondays, featuring peaceful civil disobedience in Washington D.C. and other state capitals, through August 2. It is being billed as the Season of Non-Violent Moral Action. This comes after the For the People Act, a groundbreaking bill in defense of voter rights, failed to pass the Senate, as Republicans voted against starting debate on it. The Poor Peoples Campaign has also been calling for the realization of the Third Reconstruction in the United States. The Third Reconstruction draws from the transformational history of the First Reconstruction following the U.S. Civil War and the Second Reconstruction of the civil rights movement of the 20th century. Our guest is the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, Co-Chair of the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival along with the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II.

Today on Sojourner Truth, Part 2 of our Poor People's Campaign on the Third Reconstruction. On Monday, June 21, thousands of poor people, low-wage workers, campaigners and faith leaders from across the United States gathered online for a mass assembly organized by the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. The assembly, which simultaneously featured a socially-distanced rally in North Carolina, called for the realization of the Third Reconstruction. The Third Reconstruction draws from the transformational history of the First Reconstruction following the U.S. Civil War and the Second Reconstruction of the civil rights movement of the 20th century. The Poor Peoples Campaign describes the Third Reconstruction as a revival of the country's constitutional commitment to establish justice, provide for the general welfare, end decades of austerity, and recognize that policies that center the country's 140 million poor are also good economic policies that can heal and transform the nation. During today's program, you will hear more speeches, testimony and music from the historic event, which was led by Poor Peoples Campaign co-chairs Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis and Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II.

Members of Congress have introduced a non-partisan resolution entitled, A Third Reconstruction: It's Time to Fully Address Poverty and Low Wages from the Bottom Up. Inspired by decades of fierce campaigning, the congressional resolution for a Third Reconstruction reflects a progressive vision for a fundamental restructuring of society. The resolution points out that in order to build a true Third Reconstruction, U.S. society must deal with the interlocking injustices of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation and the denial of health care, militarism and the distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism that blames the poor instead of the systems that cause poverty. Furthermore, the assembly kicked off a one-year campaign dedicated to building a mass Moral March on Washington and Poor Peoples & Low-Wage Workers Assembly on June 18, 2022. The hybrid online and in-person mass assembly included over 40 state coordinating committees, over 200 organizing partners, and thousands of faith leaders. Today on Sojourner Truth, we bring you exclusive audio from that assembly. During todays program, you will hear speeches, testimony and music from the historic event, which was led by Poor Peoples Campaign co-chairs Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis and Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II.

Dr. William J. Barber II.
Bill Myers Inspires Memphis has a long history in its struggle for justice. Just as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed there standing up for the rights of the city's impoverished black community in “The Poor Peoples Campaign” more than 50 years ago, Memphis once again finds itself in a fight to protect its poor black community against injustice. This modern day "David versus Goliath" pits the black citizens of Memphis against the big Texas oil company seeking to run an oil pipeline through the heart of the black community and placing the health of these citizens at great risk. The Injustice of corporate greed over the health and well being of the black citizens of Memphis is a classic case of environmental racism. Justin J. Pearson is the fourth son of five boys born to teenage parents in Memphis, Tennessee. Justin J. graduated from Mitchell High School as Valedictorian and Bowdoin College in 2017 majoring in both Government & Legal Studies and Education Studies. He currently lives in Memphis but works at the headquarters of Year Up in Boston, Massachusetts. He is focused on social, racial, and economic justice as Special Assistant to the CEO of Year Up - a national program helping 18 - 24-year-olds gain training and entry-level jobs with corporate partners such as Bank of America, Facebook, and Salesforce. Justin J. is also one of the leaders of Memphis Community Against the Pipeline (MCAP) which is a Black-led environmental justice organization seeking to end the racism and injustices in Memphis with the stopping of the Byhalia Connection Pipeline. Pearson has an unwavering commitment to justice and the pursuit of opportunity for all people. https://www.memphiscap.org Justinjpearson1@gmail.com ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~ Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. Today, we bring you part two of our national coverage of a mass assembly hosted by the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. The two-hour assembly was entitled, Voting is Power Unleashed: National Moral Monday Mass Assembly and Teach In. If you missed part one of our special, you can listen to it anytime on SoundCloud.com; just search for Sojourner Truth with Margaret Prescod. The mass poor peoples assembly and teach-in was hosted on September 14, 2020, just weeks away from the upcoming November 2020 election. The first Poor Peoples Campaign was initially called by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. It has now been revived by the Poor Peoples Campaign joint coordinators Bishop Dr. William J. Barber II and the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis. The PPC fusion approach is centered around the themes of racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nations distorted moral narrative. Participants in this event, Voting is Power Unleashed, include the PPC Coordinating Committees (now in 43 states) and other civic, religious and social justice organizations. Also, cultural activist Jane Fonda, Mark Ruffalo, D.L. Hughley, Erika Alexander, and Charlemagne tha God. Presidential candidates from both major parties were invited. However, only Joe Biden responded, so he was the only one to address the agenda and priorities of poor and low-income people. The event also features Forward Justice, the NAACP legal defense fund, and is part of the M.O.R.E. Campaign, which stands for Mobilizing, Organizing, Registering and Educating people for a movement that votes.

If 1968 was the year of ‘the far side of the moon & the birth of the culture wars', it was also the year, according to Smithsonian magazine, “The American Story” shattered. This first of a multi-part series The American Tapestry Project about America's tribal tales & culture wars anchors the series in “The ‘60s” shattering of American norms: post-1968's politics as angry theater, identarian politics (Black Power, Women's Liberation, Chicano, Asian & Gay Rights), the libertarian sexual revolution, New Age Religion, the counter-culture and a music drenched, media saturated society in search of itself. 1968 – the year some call the worst year in modern American history – suffered political assassinations, riots in the streets, women on the march for equality, the War in Vietnam, the Poor Peoples Campaign, the full blooming of the sexual revolution, the counterculture's “turn on, tune in, drop out” and music, music, music. As they say on Madison Avenue, ‘all this and more'!

Today on Sojourner Truth: On Tuesday, August 11, the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival released a groundbreaking report titled, Unleashing the Power of Poor and Low-Income Americans. The report was produced by Robert Paul Hartley, an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Columbia University, and included a foreword by Shailly Gupta Barnes, Policy Director of the Poor Peoples Campaign. The report uses nationally representative data to illustrate the potential voting power of low-income people in the United States, who were reported to be as high as 140 million prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, amid rising unemployment and economic crises resulting from the pandemic, that figure is expected to be much higher. The report found that organizing among the poor, around an agenda that represents the concerns of the poor, can fundamentally change the political map of the United States and lead to policies that are just and representative for all people. This is backed up by several key findings. In the 2016 presidential election, for example, there were 138 million voters out of 225 million eligible voters. 29 million of these voters were poor or low-income and there were an additional 34 million poor or low-income people who were eligible, but who did not vote. Also, looking at data from the 2016 presidential election, the report found that low-income eligible nonvoters make up 1/5th or more of the electorate in 7 states. If these potential low-income voters voted at a similar voting rate as higher income voters in the 2016 election, then they would match or exceed the presidential election margin of victory in 15 states. There were several groundbreaking findings in the report, but the conclusion is clear: poor and low-income people have the power to change the country with their voices and votes, if their full voting potential is unleashed. Coinciding with the release of the report, the Poor Peoples Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival hosted a webinar, in which first-time voters laid out why they're casting a ballot this year. Today, we bring you audio from that webinar, in which you will hear more key findings from the study as well as commentary from impacted speakers.

In this episode with Rev. Graylan S. Hagler, we discuss how current times are like a page taken out of the playbook itself, i.e., the Bible. Jesus was a rebel back then. What would the prophet do today? Rev. Hagler is the Senior Pastor at the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington, DC (plymouth-ucc.org). He is also an activist and organizer, co-chair of the Poor Peoples Campaign (poorpeoplescampaign.org), mentor and friend. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tracey-rogers/support
Today on Sojourner Truth: The Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is a grassroots movement uniting tens of thousands of people to challenge the evils of systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nation's distorted morality. This year, from June 17-19 in Washington D.C., the Poor People's Campaign will be hosting its nationwide Moral Action Congress. At the Congress, the Poor People's Campaign Moral and Constitutional Budget will be released, promoting a new economy that serves the interests of working people and not the one percent. The Congress will also feature a National Freedom School, with educational workshops on key issues affecting our country, and a forum for presidential candidates who are invited to hear their demands. The Poor People's Campaign has also planned a visit to Capitol Hill during the Congress and has even requested a hearing. The Poor People's Campaign, which points out that there are over 140 million poor and low-income residents in the U.S., declared a state of emergency in the lead-up to the forthcoming Congress. Along with rampant poverty and inequality, this emergency also includes the fossil fuel invasion of Indigenous lands, the destruction of the environment, systemically-racist police institutions, military expansion across the globe and the growth of the private prison system. In response to this declared emergency, the California's Poor People's Campaign organized a Truth and Poverty Bus Tour, which kicked off on Monday, April 1. The tour, concluded on April 13 with a public hearing on family separations at the U.S./Mexico border, traversed several locations across the state. These include the Yurok Reservation, Chico, Sacramento, Oakland, Fresno and Pacoima, among others. Through these hearings, the people of California were given a chance to voice their experiences and thoughts on important moral issues that must be addressed in the United States. Today, we bring you voices from a Poor Peoples Campaign hearings held in Pacoima and Fresno, California. In today's show, you will hear Indigenous speakers in Pacoima discuss important issues affecting their communities along with low-wage workers. You will also hear from a victim of the prison-industrial complex. From Fresno, you will hear from community activists who are putting pressure on elected officials to combat rising costs of living, like water prices. Also, we hear testimony from a woman who works as a caregiver for her 100-year-old mother, speaking on behalf of her and her struggles.

Today on Sojourner Truth, we focus on the new Poor Peoples Campaign. A growing national movement to end poverty and calls for a moral revival. Nearly half a century ago, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King called for a Poor Peoples Campaign. He was assassinated before he was able to fully implement it. In May 2017, four months after the inauguration of Donald Trump, the Rev. Dr. William Barber introduced the new Poor Peoples Campaign, building on Kings call to end poverty. Today, we bring you the voice of Barber himself, speaking at a mass meeting in Los Angeles where he launched the new Poor Peoples Campaign in California.
