Every year, MPavilion takes a new form as a different architect responds to the changing face of Melbourne. This continual movement of space and meaning reflects growing international recognition—epitomised in the work of our 2018 architect, Barcelona’s Carme Pinós—that urban environments are increasingly dynamic. Victorian-era institutional buildings in our own city demonstrate that in the past, architecture emphasised solidity and permanence, whatever the reality of its inhabitants. Now, designers across the globe are using temporary interventions such as pavilions and installations to disrupt this often false social immovability. Focusing on Pinós’s MPavilion design and the evolution of the space as a whole, this MTalk explored how contemporary design can sustainably contribute to evolving urban communities.

Vietnamese-born Danish artist Danh Vō joined us for a special conversation with Geelong Gallery director Jason Smith, for this MTalk. Danh Vō’s early life was defined by upheaval: Danh and his family fled their native South Vietnam, launching seaward in a homemade boat to be rescued at sea by a Danish freighter and re-settled in Denmark. Danh’s art is often attributed to these early events and the subsequent new location he and his family found themselves in—a dialogue between the historical and the personal, of identity and belonging. Danh Vō’s art is wonderfully prolific, and perhaps most recognisable is the work We The People (pictured), one that continued Danh’s artistic narrative in the form of a 1:1 scale model of the Statue of Liberty but deconstructed into 250 smaller individual pieces: an exposition that prompts the viewer to ponder the very meaning of liberty. We invite you revisit to this MTalks event, to explore the depth of Danh’s work.

Sonia Leber and David Chesworth are two artists who have been collaborating since 1996 in the creation of a series of large-scale installation artworks, using sound, video, architecture and public participation. These works often utilise the human voice as a principal element along with real world situations as a starting point. These situations include the old The Age newspaper building on Melbourne's Spencer Street in pre-demolition days in We Are Printers Too, and commuters stuck at an underground station entrance in Time Mirror. Revisit this MTalk presented by Melbourne Festival and CCP, featuring Sonia Leber and David Chesworth in conversation with Naomi Cass as they sat down for a chat that explores their working methods. Naomi is from from the Centre for Contemporary Photography and curator of The Documentary Take, a new exhibition featuring Sonia and David’s works.

Treatment was a two-day, site-responsive public art project on display (via an eighty-minute bus tour) at Melbourne Water’s Western Treatment Plant in Werribee on 14 and 21 November 2015. Curators David Cross and Cameron Bishop invited six artists to work with the plant’s sights and sounds—its treatment lagoons and abandoned former township, its world-renowned wetlands and resident waterfowl—in order to explore its history, landscape and technology. Listen to this MTalk as David and Cameron lead Treatment’s six featured artists—Catherine Bell, Bindi Cole Chocka, Megan Evans, Shane McGrath, Techa Noble and Spiros Panigirakis—in a round-table conversation that will look back at the project and specifically consider how each artist chose to respond to the 11,000-hectare site. The six works (from performance to sound and film installation) will ground a broader discussion about how we curate and make temporary public art that responds to highly particular cultural, environmental and technological conditions. What benefits arise from artworks popping up in the street, the park, the paddock? Can public art engage a community’s collective mind and change the way it is perceived?

“The future is already here—it’s just not evenly distributed.” So said William Gibson, an American-Canadian science-fiction writer (who also, incidentally, coined the term ‘cyberspace’ in his 1982 short story ‘Burning Chrome’)—and it’s this quote that has inspired the 2016 Biennale of Sydney. Helmed by artistic director Stephanie Rosenthal, the twentieth instalment of Australia’s largest contemporary arts festival will run from 18 March to 5 June 2016 across seven ‘embassies of thought’ in and around the harbour city—including, for the first time, in an old mortuary train station. So why this William Gibson quote? What significance does it hold to Stephanie and the Biennale, and what performances, ideas and site-specific works can we expect it to generate? Listen to this intriguing MTalk as Stephanie introduces us to the 2016 Biennale of Sydney through a special illustrated lecture, presented by Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA). Thirty or so years after William Gibson first spoke his famous line, how do we view the future? Have the virtual and physical become closer, or more disparate, and how were the seventy-one-plus artists encouraged to explore these concepts? Following her address, Stephanie is joined by MUMA director Charlotte Day for further discussion and rumination on the key themes, histories and connections woven into the Biennale’s twentieth edition.
