Resilience is part of the DNA in agriculture, but there's a massive difference when the adversity being faced is away from the farm and involves a loved one.Grower James Rickert and his wife Casey faced such adversity when their young daughter Emersyn contracted Hemolytic-uremic syndrome caused by E.coli.Earlier this year, Emersyn battled through a multi system shutdown, kidney failure, coma, seizures, neurological complications, a collapsed lung and multiple infections. After 10 weeks in the hospital, Emersyn is home and vastly improved. She started her first day in kindergarten and even had a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Rickert family hopes Emersyn's courage will inspire others facing huge life challenges.“She's my hero, and I don't know how she does what she does every day,” Casey said. “She's still processing the trauma in her own way. Nothing phases this kid. She is defying the odds after what she went through.”“I look at life differently,” James said. “I realize that every day with my family is special. I have never appreciated it as much as I do today.”Emersyn continues her recovery and recently made a Gingerbread house with a horse on top. She also put her Christmas request in to Santa Claus for a tiny dog.
Imagine stepping into a warm kitchen on a cold December afternoon. Light streams through the window, catching dust motes in the air as the oven door swings open to reveal rows of gingerbread cookies—crisp edges, soft centers, and that unmistakable aroma of holiday spices. Over in the living room, somewhere between the fireplace and the decorated tree, a song floats softly through the house. It's an old melody your grandfather sang every year, carrying a quiet strength that somehow still feels close, even if he's no longer sitting in that armchair by the window. For many of us, these moments—biting into a cookie with a secret family recipe or humming along to a holiday carol passed down through the ages—connect us with the people who came before. Recipes and songs often feel like threads binding us to distant times, handed down through generations, shaping who we are today. Uncovering the stories behind family recipes and cherished tunes makes it possible to understand not just what our ancestors loved, but why these traditions mattered enough to carry forward into modern life... A town targeted by a warlord is defended by an unexpected army of...well, I'm sure you can guess. Genre: Fairy Tale Excerpt: The hilltop town of Adarak had a tradition of baking gingerbread men and setting them along the windowsills on the longest night of winter, facing outward, to keep the town safe from enemies— whether mortal or mystical. Many believed that this tradition arose in homage of the ginger-colored cloaks that the town guards wore, all the better to hide their movements through the forests and mountain surrounding the town. But every grandmother in town made sure to tell her grandchildren the true story of the tradition… What story or stories am I revisiting in this episode? Each Season 8 episode is a standalone story, but it's connected to or inspired by a previous story through a character, a place, an object, a concept, a continuation of events (ahem, sequel), and so on. This story is connected to the Year Five story entitled “I Dreamed A Cookie,” in which a baking contest finalist takes inspiration from a locked-in-a-bakery-overnight dream.
