From Disputed Questions in De Anima (1269) as presented in Thomas Aquinas: Selected Philosophical Writings (Oxford 1993), "Passage 18: Soul in Human Beings." The question is how Aquinas, as an Aristotelian who therefore thinks the mind is the form of the body, can agree with the Christian doctrine that the soul exists after death. The answer is surprisingly weird: The body-less soul is incomplete, so we'd need to have the end-of-times full-bodily-resurrection of all the good people in order to have a truly satisfactory heaven. Beata Stawarska, Philosophy and 2024–25 Oregon Humanities Center Faculty Research Fellow My project engages with the untranslated and relatively unknown theoretical writings by L. S. Senghor, the first president of independent Senegal, a poet, and a philosopher. I will translate selected essays and author an article dealing with the topic of vital force in Senghor's philosophy. I will argue that Senghor's ideas are rooted in the traditional West African culture, especially Serer animism, wherein life and death, bodies and spirits, are interdependent rather than mutually opposed. Senghor's philosophy indicates therefore a departure from European efforts to articulate an African ontology of life force.

Wir haben erfahren, weshalb für den griechischen Philosophen unser Körper notwendig ist um lebendig zu sein. O Festival de Cinema de Animação de Annecy bateu recordes de participação com Portugal como país convidado. Uma forma de um público alargado descobrir a animação portuguesa, já muito premiada neste e noutros certames. Entre 9 e 15 de Junho, milhares de pessoas estiveram em Annecy para a edição número 65 do Festival de Animação. Este ano, o certame bateu recordes com mais de 17.400 profissionais e estudantes acreditados e outras tantas milhares de pessoas que encheram as salas de manhã à noite, como explicou o director deste certame, Marcel Jean, em entrevista à RFI."O Festival de Annecy está a ser mais frequentado por mais pessoas do que nunca. Temos um número recorde de visitantes e tivemos também as salas cheias durante toda a semana. Este ano, chegámos a ter sessões muito cedo, às 8h30 da manhã, e as salas estavam cheias. Portanto, desde as 8h30 da manhã até à meia-noite. Estamos muito satisfeitos com isso", explicou.Esta fidelidade do público, assim como a importância dos filmes aqui mostrados que todos os anos fazem evoluir o cinema de animação em todo o Mundo tornam-no numas das mais importantes mostras a nível global."No que diz respeito a filme de animação, este é de longe o maior evento do mundo e o que contribui para o sucesso de Annecy é a qualidade do seu público. É um público maioritariamente composto por profissionais e jovens profissionais. Ou seja, há vários milhares de estudantes que vêm a Annecy todos os anos, estudantes de animação que vêm sobretudo da Europa, mas também de todo o mundo. E estas pessoas têm uma capacidade de reconhecer o trabalho que implica o cinema de animação e uma sede de aprender, uma sede de conhecimento que explica por que razão sessões como making of, as masterclasses e os work-in-progress fazem tanto sucesso em Annecy, tal como as projecções de filmes acabados", disse Marcel Jean.Este ano, Portugal foi o país convidado deste encontro. Um convite óbvio para Fernando Galrito, director do Festival Monstra, em Lisboa, já que o cinema de animação português tem dado provas da sua qualidade em Annecy e em todo o Mundo."O cinema de animação português é considerado, em termos internacionais, como um dos melhores da Europa. Para não dizer até, se calhar do mundo. Só para lhe dar uma ideia, o cinema português mais premiado internacionalmente é o cinema de animação. Cerca de 70% dos prémios que já foram atribuídos ao cinema português são de animação. Ou seja, aquilo que nós fazemos em termos de animação é de muito boa qualidade e é apreciado no mundo inteiro. Depois também faz todo o sentido, porque também a nossa história aqui com o festival de Annecy já é longa. Nós já tivemos Cristal de Ouro, já tivemos vários filmes premiados, muitos filmes na competição, tivemos na última edição do festival, tivemos duas longas metragens, o que nem sempre acontece com países, pelo menos com a dimensão de Portugal. Isto revela uma qualidade e uma quantidade de trabalho que é feito, especialmente do ponto de vista autoral, muito forte e muito bom. Daí que eu acho que temos mais do que reunidas todas as condições necessárias para podermos ser um dos países convidados do Festival da Annecy. Pelo que eu vou ouvindo nas reacções do público, dado que tenho apresentado muitas das sessões retrospectivas, as pessoas adoram aquilo que foram vendo e aquilo que é a nossa participação no festival", relatou Fernando Galrito.A participação portuguesa acabou por se traduzir num prémio, com as realizadoras portuguesas Alexandra Ramires e Laura Gonçalves a levarem para Portugal o prémio Cristal na categoria de melhor curta-metragem. A excelência do cinema de animação português é também uma evidência para Marcel Jean, com o país a abrir-se e revelar-se ao grande público."Ter Portugal como país convidado é uma aposta que este ano deu frutos, na medida em que o cinema português se desenvolveu bastante nos últimos 25 anos. A animação desenvolveu-se bastante e o público teve muita curiosidade em ver o que se está a passar em Portugal, na medida em que é um viveiro de produção que foi subestimado durante muito tempo. Por isso, reunir curtas-metragens portuguesas, mostrando um panorama alargado da produção nacional, foi uma revelação para muitos espectadores este ano. E na competição oficial também vimos algumas obras portuguesas que se destacaram", declarou.Portugal veio também a Annecy nas busca de atrair novos talentos para a animação portuguesa e mais apoios privados para o desenvolvimento desta categoria da sétima arte."Estamos a criar uma relação para além daquilo que já se faz em Portugal por portugueses. Estamos a criar uma relação internacional que vai no sentido muitos profissionais internacionais quererem vir trabalhar para o cinema de animação português, porque é sinal que estão a trabalhar em obras de qualidade e de referência mundial, por um lado, e depois também com esta presença forte aqui, queremos que cada vez mais produtores internacionais se juntem e mais produtores nacionais também se à realização portuguesa, de forma a que, do ponto de vista económico, digamos, também exista um suporte para aquilo que, do ponto de vista da criatividade, já é uma realidade, de forma a que, digamos que uma gente sabe que é que existe, não é que é a criatividade e a capacidade de realização com grande qualidade. Internamente, ainda falta o apoio das grandes empresas. É preciso, digamos, todas as forças, tanto as políticas e nacionais como também as privadas, se juntem num esforço para que o nosso cinema de animação seja ainda mais reconhecido nacional e internacionalmente", indicou Fernando Galrito.Apesar de ser apenas uma semana, este é um Festival que permite a esta indústria manter-se em contacto, originando muitas vezes a itinerância dos filmes seleccionados, encontros profissionais e ainda permitir a apresentação de obras inéditas noutras latitudes, como acontece no caso da Monstra de Lisboa."Eu pessoalmente, desde 1985 que venho ao Festival de Annecy com alguma regularidade. Diria que é um espaço não só de encontro com outros profissionais e com outras pessoas que fazem festivais, é um espaço onde encontramos também filmes que nos interessam mostrar no Festival da Monstra, em Lisboa. Mas também é um local onde devido à troca que temos com os outros festivais, podemos também levar o nosso cinema a outras paragens. Nós nos últimos 24 anos, que são os anos que tem a Monstra, nós já estivemos com filmes portugueses em mais de 350 cidades dos cinco continentes", descreveu Galrito.É em Annecy que muitas grandes produções vêm a luz do dia, com esta edição a mostrar as primeiras imagens de "Astérix et Obélix, le Combat des chefs", uma série que vai estrear na Netflix ou o trailer de "Moana II", uma aguardada sequela dos estúdios Disney. No entanto, Annecy também é palco para as produções independentes, com estes dois mundos a cruzarem-se uma semana em França."O equilíbrio entre as produções dos grandes estúdios, sejam eles as grandes plataformas, os estúdios americanos, os estúdios japoneses ou mesmo as grandes redes francesas ou europeias tem de ser encontrado com obras totalmente independentes. E é por isso que é tão importante ter sempre um destaque para as curtas-metragens, e é por isso que até temos várias subcategorias na competição de curtas-metragens: temos a curta-metragem, temos uma secção chamada Contrechamps, que se centra mais nos países emergentes. Temos uma secção chamada Animation limite, que apresenta obras mais experimentais, e uma secção para o público jovem, para filmes destinados a crianças. Para mim, este equilíbrio é fundamental para o sucesso do Festival de Annecy. O Festival de Annecy começou há 65 anos como um festival de curtas-metragens e, na altura, era toda uma série de artistas independentes que queriam reunir-se, reagrupar-se e mostrar o seu trabalho. Hoje em dia, é muito importante que os grandes estúdios, as plataformas e tudo o resto, que estas estrelas que vêm a Annecy sejam utilizadas para dar visibilidade às obras independentes. Estive numa sala cheia com 300 espectadores para ver uma programação de filmes de animação experimental. Para mim, foi um verdadeiro sucesso. E, no início da semana, conversei com alguém da Disney que tinha visto essa mesma sessão de animação experimental no início do dia. Para mim, estes encontros entre os maiores estúdios, entre a animação industrial destinada a um grande público e as produções independentes de nicho, muitas vezes produzidas pouco dinheiro, é algo importante. Este diálogo tem de existir", concluiu Marcel Jean.

In this episode (recorded live at Paideia!), we discuss book one of Aristotle's "On the Soul," where he dismantles all the other theories about what a soul is before he provides his answer in book two.

The Soul or Rational Psychology by Emanuel Swedenborg audiobook. Swedenborg, Emanuel, 1688-1772, was born in Stockholm, Sweden and died in London, England. He was a voluminous writer of scientific treatises as well as prophetic works such as Archana Caelestia and The Divine Providence. He said he had encountered supranational agencies and communicated with angels. This is a recording of the 1849 translation of his 1743 book The Soul or Rational Psychology (Regnum Animale, Pars Septima De Anima) Latin. He took his cue from Aristotle's De Anima. A few quotes It has been shown above that the harmonies themselves are innate with us, or that we perceive them without a teacher; as the sweetnesses of taste and smell, the symmetries of sound, the excellencies and beauties of nature; in a word, the very order of things or the harmony of modes, forces, substances, and forms. Thence also we may perceive the very truths of things, for these correspond to the order itself in nature; and this is the reason why order is called 'the transcendental truth.' In order that the human intellect may exist, it is necessary that the truths themselves be variegated and as it were modified by things mendacious, or true things with false, good with evil. There are as many worlds as there are terrestrial societies, and there are as many heavens as there are celestial societies. The love of society is both natural and acquired, for to live alone or to live without society is not to live, for whatever is one's own is not known as one's own except from others, or relatively. When we strive for and desire what we love, and yet impossibilities interfere with our attaining our end, we call this state of desire hope, and it seems to be in the will viewed as an endeavour which these obstacles are preventing from coming forth into act and motion. Thus hope is not an affection of the mind, but of its will. For the will always endeavours to act, but so long as it is resisted does not act. Meanwhile it is affected by a certain hope, so that it remains balanced between action and inaction. Despair exists when we cut off hope; then also when, in the end itself, love and ambition, that is, the life and ardour of the mind, collapse and are as it were extinguished. There is a liberty of thinking and a liberty of acting; and in the middle between these two there is as it were the liberty of choosing , in which properly free will consists; and that our mind is not capable of ruling whether the objects of the senses and their exciting influences, both from the body and the world, shall flow in or not, but it is capable of choosing whether these sensations and excitements shall flow out and be determined into act.' This third edition of the 1849 translation was published in 1914. Johann Friedrich Immanuel Tafel, 1796-1863 devoted himself to translating Swedenborg into German, and Frank Sewall, 1837-1915 into English. Au sens commun des deux termes suivants aujourd'hui, « être » est synonyme d' « exister », malgré la contradiction étymologique : ex-istere signifie « être en dehors [de soi] », par opposition à « être » qui se rapporte à une essence/substance auto-contenue ou auto-suffisante (sui generis) : être, c'est le fait d'être, c'est exister ; la Réalité est antérieurement à toute caractérisation. Le primum mobile d'Aristote se comprend en français comme étant un « moteur immobile » ou « moteur immuable », autrement dit comme une stabilité primant ontologiquement sur le mouvant et le changeant. Mais à quoi cela correspond-il dans la réalité concrète de notre expérience quotidienne ? Il s'agit de la conscience, ou de l'Âme comme l'appelaient les anciens2, qui est le moteur du corps selon le De Anima. Na noite americana deste domingo João Gonzalez vai estar sentado nas cadeiras da frente do Teatro Dolby, em Los Angeles. São os lugares reservados para as estrelas de cinema ou para nomeados a alguns dos Óscares. Há vários países para quem é uma rotina ter um cidadão seu entre os eleitos. Para Portugal, esta é a primeira vez em que um cineasta português realiza um filme que está nomeado para os Óscares de Hollywood.

Ice Merchants, de João Gonzalez, é o primeiro filme português nomeado para os Óscares. A curta-metragem de animação está na lista dos cinco candidatos à estatueta de Melhor Curta de Animação, anunciou a Academia de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas de Hollywood nesta terça-feira.
