featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2856: Anactoria Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 28 February 2025 is Anactoria.Anactoria (or Anaktoria; Ancient Greek: Ἀνακτορία) is a woman mentioned in the work of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. Sappho, who wrote in the late seventh and early sixth centuries BCE, names Anactoria as the object of her desire in a poem numbered as fragment 16. Another of her poems, fragment 31, is traditionally called the "Ode to Anactoria", though no name appears in it. As portrayed by Sappho, Anactoria is likely to have been an aristocratic follower of hers, of marriageable age. It is possible that fragment 16 was written in connection with her wedding to an unknown man. The name "Anactoria" has also been argued to have been a pseudonym, perhaps of a woman named Anagora from Miletus, or an archetypal creation of Sappho's imagination. The English poet Algernon Charles Swinburne's "Anactoria" was published in his 1866 collection, Poems and Ballads. "Anactoria" is written from the point of view of Sappho, who addresses the title character in a long monologue written in rhyming couplets of iambic pentameter. The monologue expresses Sappho's lust for her in sexually explicit terms; she first rejects art and the gods for Anactoria's love before reversing her stance and claiming to reject Anactoria in favour of poetry. Swinburne's poem created a sensation by openly approaching then-taboo topics such as lesbianism and dystheism. Anactoria later featured in an 1896 play by H. V. Sutherland and in the 1961 poetic series "Three Letters to Anaktoria" by Robert Lowell, in which an unnamed man loves her before transferring, unrequitedly, his affections to Sappho. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:22 UTC on Friday, 28 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Anactoria on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Olivia.

The Hiddenness Series returns. Richard Swinburne's responsibility argument aims to show it's good for God to stay hidden. That way we can investigate God's existence together. Assisting others in this endeavor, says Swinburne, is a very good deed—one we should be thankful to have the opportunity to do. In this video I discuss Swinburne's argument, Schellenberg's response, and Travis Dumsday's reformulation. I then share some of my own objections to the responsibility argument. Most importantly, I explain how it fails to undercut Schellenberg's hiddenness argument.

What we're talking about: If you're trying to decide whether you want to do a scored VCE, unscored VCE or VCE-Vocational Major (VM), then listen up! In this episode I'll explain the implications of choosing each type in terms of what happens when you want to apply to TAFE or university. 1:57 What's the difference between a scored and an unscored VCE? If you do a scored VCE, then you'll get an ATAR that you can use to apply to university and TAFE courses. There might be other criteria, but most Bachelor degrees require an ATAR, so doing a scored VCE is the most efficient way of getting into one of these courses. How an unscored VCE works may differ depending on which school you go to, but it essentially means that you won't get study scores for your subjects or an ATAR at the end of the year. 3:47 Is an unscored VCE new? Most parents haven't heard of an unscored VCE because it was very rare when we were at school. When students were kept at home during lockdowns throughout the pandemic, more students chose to do an unscored VCE because of the anxiety they were feeling about not being in the classroom. Since students have been back at school full time, the number of students doing an unscored VCE has decreased but it's not back to what it was before covid, so while a minority of students are choosing to do an unscored VCE, it's a larger minority than most parents would think. 4:40 Do all courses require an ATAR? While the vast majority of Bachelor degrees require an ATAR as part of the selection criteria, not all do. You can find Bachelor degrees that only require completion of Year 12 and maybe a prerequisite subject. There are also Diplomas and TAFE courses that don't require an ATAR. 5:38 If you do an unscored VCE, you can look at pathways into Bachelor degrees If you don't have an ATAR, there are still other ways that you can do a Bachelor degree at university if you want to. Listen up to hear more about guaranteed pathways, recommended pathways and why I think RMIT and Swinburne are great options for you if you need a pathway into a course. Should You Study a Bachelor of Arts?

What we're talking about: 1:33 What is a Bachelor of Arts? Don't confuse “Art” with “Arts”! While the subject Art at school involves things like painting and drawing, a Bachelor of Arts is more about humanities and exploring ideas through a particular perspective. Some people are reluctant to pursue a Bachelor of Arts because they think it won't lead anywhere, however if you look at the majors within the course, there are heaps of things you can study within a Bachelor of Arts that very clearly leads to a particular job or career. 6:42 What if you don't know what you want to do in your career? If you don't know yet what you want to do in your career, that's totally normal and completely fine. I firmly believe that if you're passionate about something and keep learning and networking in that area, opportunities will become available to you. I give a couple of examples of people who studied Arts and didn't know where it was going to take them, including Ash Barty's mindset coach, Ben Crowe. 8:56 A Bachelor of Arts works really well as part of a double degree A fantastic way to explore a greater range of areas, round out your education and have more to talk about in job interviews is to combine Arts with another degree. 10:51 The majors that are offered are important A Bachelor of Arts at 2 different universities can look completely different, so make sure you take a look at what's offered so you can choose the right one for you. I go through some of the majors offered at The University of Melbourne, Monash University, RMIT, Swinburne and Deakin to give you an idea of what your Bachelor of Arts could look like depending on where you choose to study. I'm excited to introduce a man who has been extremely influential to me personally over a ten year journey. Michael Street is a psychologist with an unconventional approach to therapy. He has personally been across the highs, the lows and any big decision that has essentially been made in my career and personal life. In this podcast interview we cover some of the stand out lessons and take aways from the hours of conversation we have engaged in. The dynamic in itself was unique given our meetings have always been private and generally orientated around me which would not have been appropriate for this public forum so instead, I tried to steer its course to provide value and insights for anyone considering seeking out a professional psychologist to help navigate life's complexities. Michael believes that coaching, counselling or psychotherapy needs to be tailored to each individual. This has led him to gain skills in a number of different approaches over his twenty years in practice. Michael came to study psychology as a mature age student, completing his studies part-time in Melbourne at Swinburne and Victoria University during the '80s and '90s. He believes that coaching, counselling or psychotherapy needs to be tailored to each individual. This has led him to develop skills in a number of different approaches over his twenty years in practice. Growing up in a Victorian country town in the middle of the twentieth century, he experienced both the State and Catholic school systems before serving as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy during the Vietnam era. He has worked in manufacturing, in sales, in retail as a business proprietor, in academia, HR, business administration, and has also spent many years on-site as a construction worker. This wide experience, combined with his light-hearted and often direct manner, has given him the ability to communicate with people of all ages and at all levels. Although Michael sees equal numbers of men and women, he specialises in men, couples and communication between individuals. He is divorced with two grown-up children. As a psychologist based in Carlton, Michael provides a range of services to clients from across the northern suburbs of Melbourne including psychotherapy, marriage and couples counselling, life coaching, general counselling services and more.
