In this bonus special episode of the Technology and Security podcast, host Dr Miah Hammond-Errey was joined in conversation by Dr. Simon Longstaff and Major General Paul Symon. It is a lightly edited panel conversation about ethics, technology and intelligence held at the ethics Centre in Sydney in February this year. Ostensibly to launch Miah's new book, the conversation was a great excuse to get the three of us together to have a fun chat about the intersections of technology intelligence and ethics. Dr Miah Hammond-Errey outlined how the big data landscape –of data abundance, digital connectivity and ubiquitous technology – impacts intelligence production and national security. This includes where Australian intelligence leaders and practitioners see the ethical boundaries of data and technology use in intelligence as well as the broader concept of ‘ethics at scale.' The first 22 mins are the opening statements. Following on, Dr. Simon Longstaff and Major General Paul Symon explored a wide range of ethical implications of technology for intelligence, including the distinction between foreign and domestic intelligence, trust and legitimacy of institutions and the role of humans in ethical decision-making. They then take questions from the audience. He has a PhD in philosophy from Cambridge University, is a Fellow of CPA Australia and of the Royal Society of NSW, and an Adjunct Professor of the AGSM at UNSW. In 2013, he was made an officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for “distinguished service to the community through the promotion of ethical standards in governance and business, to improving corporate responsibility, and to philosophy.” Simon is an Adjunct Professor of the Australian Graduate School of Management at UNSW, a Fellow of CPA Australia, the Royal Society of NSW and the Australian Risk Policy Institute.Major General Paul Symon (Retd), AO served as the 12th Director-General of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) from 2017-2022, responsible for the collection of foreign human intelligence. During his tenure, he provided advice to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister on foreign intelligence, was a regular attendee of the National Security Committee of Cabinet and oversaw a high tempo of very sensitive and high-risk intelligence operations. Prior to this, his military career lasted 35 years across regions and distinguished appointments, including leading intelligence activities at the highest levels. He served overseas in the United Kingdom, Israel, Lebanon, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and Baghdad. Paul was made an Officer in the Military Division of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service as Joint Task Force commander on operations in the Middle East in 2005/06. Paul is currently an independent non-executive board member and, separately, a strategic adviser to the University of Melbourne. This week Nicola and Di chat with the genuine and inspiring Ronni Kahn AO. Ronni is a social entrepreneur who founded the food rescue charity, OzHarvest. She is a passionate advocate and activist and her mission to fight food waste and feed hungry people is supported by some of the world's finest chefs. Ronni is an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) and was named Australian Local Hero of the Year in 2010. Her journey is the subject of a feature film, Food Fighter and her memoir, A Repurposed Life, has recently been published. In this conversation, Ronni tells us the remarkable story of a trip back to South Africa to visit an old friend that uncovered Ronni's purpose and changed the course of her life forever. She shares how it all began with OzHarvest, and how her passion is fuelled by purpose and Ronni considers it a privilege to be able to do the work she does in the world and make an incredible impact. That's the advice from architect and urbanist Professor Helen Lochhead, who was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2024 Australia Day Honours for distinguished service to architecture and urban design, to building regulation reform, to tertiary education, and to professional organisations. A graduate of both the University of Sydney and Columbia University in New York, Helen is a woman who has certainly made every day count. A recipient of many prestigious travel scholarships and Fellowships including Fulbright, Bogliasco and the Harvard Lincoln/Loeb Fellowship, Helen also became a Churchill Fellow in 2010 to study recent models of urban regeneration that demonstrate a holistic approach to climate change and sustainability. In her roles as Deputy NSW Government Architect for 9 years and then through various academic positions and board roles, Helen has worked on and influenced some iconic projects, including Sydney Olympic Park and Sydney Harbour Foreshore. She has achieved a significant level of peer recognition and been much awarded. In 2019 the Australian Institute of Architects awarded Helen the Paula Whitman Leadership in Gender Equity Prize for her outstanding and determined individual contribution to the advancement of gender equity in architecture. Christmas Day - The Nativity of the Lord The Right Reverend Kay Goldsworthy AO, Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Perth and Metropolitan of Western Australia, was born and called to ministry in the Diocese of Melbourne. She was ordained Deaconess in 1984 and Deacon in 1986 and served in parishes in Melbourne. In 1988 she was appointed Chaplain to Perth College and was among the first women in Australia to be ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Peter Carnley on 7 March 1992. Kay was appointed Assistant Bishop by Archbishop Roger Herft and was the first woman ordained to the episcopate in Australia on 22 May 2008. She was elected as the diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Gippsland and installed on 21 March 2015. In the final episode for this series, we talk to the amazing Rosie Batty AO. Rosie became a household name in Australia for all the wrong reasons. After her beloved son, 11 year old Luke was brutally killed by his father at a cricket game in 2014, Rosie faced the media and in a spell binding delivery sent the nation a message we needed to hear: “Family violence happens to everyone. No matter how nice your house, how intelligent you are. It can happen to anyone and everyone.”Thrown into the spotlight, Rosie tirelessly dedicated herself to raising awareness of Australia's hidden epidemic of violence against women. In 2014 she established the Luke Batty Foundation to assist women and children. She then played a major role in establishing Victoria's Royal Commission into Family Violence, and had a leading hand in the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children. In 2015 Rosie she was named Australian of the Year. At the time she said she was, “the person no one wants to be, the mother who has suffered the insufferable.”Rosie's tireless advocacy has taken her around the nation and to international forums, including the UN. In 2016 she was ranked 33 in a list of the World's Greatest Leaders by Fortune Magazine. In 2019 Rosie was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO).But all this selfless advocacy and passionate effort comes at a cost. As Artistic Director of the Brandenburg Orchestra, Paul Dyer leads a dedicated team of musicians and support staff who bring passion and excellence to every performance. In 2013 Paul was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his ‘distinguished service to the performing arts, particularly orchestral music as a director, conductor and musician, through the promotion of educational programs and support for emerging artists'. Under Paul's direction, the Brandenburg has become one of the most outstanding period instrument ensembles in the world. Paul Dyer founded the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra with Managing Director Bruce Applebaum in 1989. The Brandenburg's first official concert was at the Sydney Opera House, a moment Paul readily recalls with fondness and disbelief at his own naivete with such an ambitious project. It is however this ambition and passion that Paul has brought to the organisation every day, and which has led the orchestra from strength to strength. Paul's dedication and enthusiasm continue to inspire the musicians and support team, as the orchestra grows and innovates, challenges and inspires, both audience and performer alike. Paul completed postgraduate studies in solo performance with Bob van Asperen at the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague, and has appeared as soloist, continuo player and conductor with many major Australian and European orchestras - the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia, Australian Youth Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Vancouver, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, London. Welcome to the fifth episode in our leadership series of Good Will Hunters. Today's guest is Peter Varghese AO. Peter would be familiar to many of us who have been working in development and foreign affairs for the better part of the last decade, or longer. Peter has had an extensive career in the public service spanning 38 years. From 2012-2013 he was the Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (or DFAT), during the period where AusAID was integrated into DFAT. He was also the High Commissioner to India from 2009 to 2012 and authored the India Economic Strategy to 2035, commissioned by the Australian Prime Minister. I have included Peter's full bio in the show notes. I actually first met Peter a few years ago in Melbourne during the Australia-India Youth Dialogue where he have a talk alongside the now Australian High Commissioner to India, Barry O'Farrell. In this episode, we discuss what it was like to lead DFAT during the AusAID Integration, including Peter's thoughts on why the decision remains controversial. We discuss Australia's development leadership, including our development policy. And we also look at public sector versus private sector leadership styles during periods of change or crisis. Peter is always insightful and a privilege to learn from. I hope you enjoy the episode. Full bio: Peter Varghese began as Chancellor of The University of Queensland on 11 July 2016. Prior to this appointment, Mr Varghese's extensive career in public service and diplomacy spanned 38 years and included senior positions in foreign affairs, trade policy and intelligence. Most recently, he served as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (2012-2016). Previous senior appointments included High Commissioner to India (2009-2012), High Commissioner to Malaysia (2000-2002), Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (2004-2009), and Senior Advisor (International) to the Prime Minister of Australia (2003-2004). Mr Varghese was the author of a comprehensive India Economic Strategy to 2035 commissioned by the Australian Prime Minister and submitted in July 2018. Mr Varghese was educated at The University of Queensland, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and a University Medal in history in 1978. He was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010 and received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from The University of Queensland in 2013. Mr Varghese sits on the boards of CARE Australia and North Queensland Airports and chairs Asialink's advisory council and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Editorial Advisory Board. He is also on the international governing board of the Rajaratnum School of International Studies in Singapore. He was awarded the Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop Asialink Medal in 2019 in recognition of outstanding contributions to improving Australia-Asia relations.
Greg Chappell is one of the most accomplished Cricketers Australia has ever produced. While he was a run machine, he batted with a touch of elegance and grace that few have seen before or since. The second of three brothers to play for Australia, Greg made 7 110 runs in 87 test matches at the superb average of 53.86 to go with his 24 test centuries, and also averaged over 40 in one day Cricket for good measure as well. He was the first player to manage the feat of scoring a century in both his first and last test matches, and as captain, he won 21 of his 48 Tests and lost only 13.He was equally productive in the breakaway World Series Cricket years, averaging 54 in 14 Supertests that saw some of the fiercest Cricket that Greg had encountered. In 1973, Greg was named the Wisden Cricketer of the Year and in 2000 he was named in the Australian Test Team of the Century. Greg was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2002.After retiring in 1984, Greg has since fulfilled a number of roles, including as a national selector over two stints, the national talent manager for Cricket Australia, and a television and radio commentator.In terms of coaching, he coached the South Australian Redbacks from 1998 for five seasons, before taking on the role of Indian coach from 2005 to 2007 in what was a tumultuous period in working alongside combative former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly.He is a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to cricket, and just this year was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to cricket as a leading player, captain, coach and administrator at the elite level, and for his contribution to a range of charitable organisations.He has also recently released a book, titled ‘Greg Chappell: Not Out', where he dissects Australian Cricket and his career from all angles, including mental skills and the future of the game in this country. It's well worth a read.

Our Great Coach on this show is Ric Charlesworth. Ric is an Australian sports coach and former politician. He played first-class cricket for Western Australia and international field hockey for Australia winning a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics. He also served as a federal member of parliament from 1983 to 1993. He was appointed coach of the Australian Womens Hockey team in 1993 leading them to Olympic gold medals in 1996 and 2000. He later coached the Australian Men's Hockey Team leading them to win the World Championship and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. He has also worked in consulting roles with the New Zealand national cricket team, the Australian Institute of Sport, and the Fremantle Football Club. Ric has been awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 1987 and an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). And just to top it off was awarded the Australian Team Coach of the Year 1994, 1996, 1997,1998,1999,2000. Ric is an icon of coaching in Australia and it was an honor to interview him. There are many, many nuggets of insight that he shares; but it was his thoughts on mining for and managing conflict and homosexuality in female versus male sport that resonated the most. After a period studying law in Sydney and teaching in Tasmania, he pursued postgraduate studies as a Member of Magdalene College, Cambridge. When Shelley Reys was a little girl, she watched her father win ‘the race that stops a nation'. "The Ethical Advantage: The Economic and Social Benefits of Ethics in Australia" Dr Simon Longstaff, AO, Executive Director, The Ethic Centre, Sydney If ethics is defined as “a way of structuring human reasoning to help choose what is right or best”, how ethical is Australia? Only 56% of Australians think that most people can be trusted. In 2019, Australia achieved an overall score of +37 on a scale of -100 to +100 (‘somewhat ethical') on the Governance Institute of Australia's Ethics Index survey. A 2018 review found that while most ASX200 companies disclosed a code of practice, only six percent had leading practice. The recent scandalous allegations surrounding Australia Post, the Badgery Creek land transaction, branch stacking, ASIC, sexual misconduct within Federal Parliament House and many others have shone the spotlight on the lack of ethics within the public service. Australia faces many significant challenges in the post-COVID era. Navigating the health and economic impacts, responding to emerging issues around the future of work and introduction of new technologies, preparing for an increasingly risky geopolitical environment and addressing long-standing social and environmental challenges including climate change and reconciliation with Indigenous Australians are some of them. Improving trust and social capital allows for smoother functioning of markets and reduces the cost of regulation and compliance. A recent report by Deloitte Access Economics projects an increase in GDP of AUD 45 billion if Australia lifts its trust level to that of global leaders. BIO Dr. Simon Longstaff, Executive Director of the Ethics Centre, discusses the economic and social benefits of ethics to Australia. Simon Longstaff began his working life on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory of Australia. He is proud of his kinship ties to the Anindilyakwa people. After a period studying law in Sydney and teaching in Tasmania, he pursued postgraduate studies as a Member of Magdalene College, Cambridge. Simon has been Executive Director of The Ethics Centre for 30 years. Dr. David Sinclair PHD is an the Australian born leading professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, best known for his research on aging and longevity mechanisms. Author of Lifespan: Why We Age - and Why We Don't Have To. Sinclair obtained a Bachelor of Science at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, and received the Australian Commonwealth Prize. In 1995, he received a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the same school,focusing on gene regulation in yeast. In 1999, Sinclair was hired at Harvard Medical School. In 2004, Sinclair, founded Sirtris Pharmaceuticals. Sinclair became known for making statements about resveratrol like: “(It's) as close to a miraculous molecule as you can find.... One hundred years from now, people will maybe be taking these molecules on a daily basis to prevent heart disease, stroke, and cancer." In 2018, Sinclair was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for "distinguished service to medical research into the biology of ageing and lifespan extension, as a geneticist and academic, to biosecurity initiatives, and as an advocate for the study of science”.

Roger Corbett has more than 50 years experience in retailing, rising from unloading trucks at Grace Brothers to the position of CEO of Woolworths (which he held from 1999 to 2006). Roger graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from UNSW and in 2008 was promoted to an officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to business, particularly through leadership roles in the retail sector. Roger remains actively involved in the business world as the chairman of several boards. He was previously on the boards of Fairfax Media, the RBA, Wal-Mart and the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
Dr. King is a specialist Radiation Oncologist, founder of Tobacco Free Portfolios, a former elite swimmer and Team Doctor for the Australian Swimming Team. Social entrepreneur, movement maker and a globally renowned humanitarian on a mission to inspire and transform organisations into purpose driven and sustainable businesses. Some of the first patients Bronwyn cared for at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre were suffering from lung cancer. However, while doing her best to treat these people, Bronwyn was unaware she was also supporting the global production of cigarettes. It was only during a meeting with a representative of her superannuation fund in 2010 that Bronwyn learned some of her money was flowing to tobacco companies through the default option of her superannuation fund. In the knowledge that many of her colleagues would be similarly unhappy with their unwitting investment in the tobacco industry, Bronwyn approached First State Super which had shortly before merged with Health Super. Following numerous meetings and a presentation to the Board, First State Super undertook a detailed analysis of the issue and in 2012, proudly made the decision to go tobacco free. Bronwyn is delighted with the willingness of the finance industry to engage and act on this issue. The work of the Tobacco Free Portfolios now has a global focus. She discusses the Stamp of Approval Program that now replaces the old Tobacco Free Portfolios Verified Tobacco Free program. The initiative now has an extensive global reach with Tobacco Free Portfolios working with 100+ pension funds, Sovereign Wealth funds, banks, insurers and fund managers in twenty countries. Bronwyn has received countless awards in recognition of her outstanding expertise and accomplishments. Most notably, she was awarded an Order of Australia (AO) in 2019 for distinguished service to community health and named 2019 Melburnian of the Year.

At a time of significant uncertainty about the shape of the future global order, the Australian Government is preparing its first foreign policy white paper since 2003. On 15 February, the Lowy Institute hosted the former Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Varghese AO in conversation with Lowy Institute Executive Director Dr Michael Fullilove and Director of Polling Alex Oliver for a timely discussion about the White Paper process and how Australia should position itself to advance its interests over the next decade. Peter Varghese AO was Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 2012 to 2016 and is the 14th Chancellor of the University of Queensland. His previous appointments include High Commissioner to India, Director-General of the Office of National Assessments, High Commissioner to Malaysia, and Senior Advisor (International) to the Prime Minister of Australia. Mr Varghese was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010 for distinguished service to public administration, particularly in leading reform in the Australian intelligence community and as an adviser in the areas of foreign policy and international security. Brennan was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1995 for services to Aboriginal Australians, particularly as an advocate in the areas of law, social justice and reconciliation. Daniel Petre is one of Australia’s most successful businesspeople and has been at the forefront of the Australian technology industry for 20 years. He’s a philanthropist, author and father of 3 daughters. He was former Head of Microsoft in Australia and was the first Australian Vice President of Microsoft international. Daniel was the founding Chairman of Ecorp, was four years on the PBL Board and brought the likes of Ebay and NineMsn to Australia. In 2005, he earned the title of Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for his contributions to the country’s business world.
The European project was an attempt to pursue a strategic objective by economic means: continental peace by way of coal and steel. More than 60 years on, if measured against that original set of goalposts, it has been a successful project. Indeed, the lure of European peace and prosperity has been so attractive that the EU has grown dramatically in the last two decades. Yet Europe has many detractors, who point to the challenges of monetary without fiscal union and responding to Russian aggression as failures of the supra-national model initiated by Robert Schuman. What lessons can Australia’s region, the Indo-Pacific, draw from the European experiment. Mr Varghese took up his position as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 3 December 2012. Prior to this appointment, Mr Varghese was Australia’s High Commissioner to India from 2009 to 2012. Between 2004 and 2009, he was Director-General of the Office of National Assessments. Before that he was the Senior Adviser (International) to the Prime Minister. Mr Varghese was Australia’s High Commissioner to Malaysia from 2000 to 2002. He has also served overseas in Tokyo (1994), Washington (1986-88) and Vienna (1980-83). Mr Varghese has held a wide range of senior positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra, including as Deputy Secretary (2002-2003), First Assistant Secretary of the International Security Division (1997), Head of the White Paper Secretariat (1996-97) which drafted Australia’s first white paper on foreign and trade policy, First Assistant Secretary of the Public Affairs Division (1994-96), and Assistant Secretary of Staffing (1991-92). He was seconded to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet as First Assistant Secretary of the International Division (1998-1999). He was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010 for distinguished service to public administration, particularly in leading reform in the Australian intelligence community and as an adviser in the areas of foreign policy and international security. He was awarded a Doctor of Letters honoris causa by the University of Queensland in July 2013 in recognition of his distinguished service to diplomacy and Australian public service.
Professor Michael Good is a NHMRC Australia Fellow at Griffith University, the past Director of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, a past President of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes, and a past Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Vaccine Technology. In 2006 he was appointed as Chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia. In 2008 he was a Steering Committee member and Co-Chair of the "long-term national health strategy" of the 2020 Summit. Also in 2008 he was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to medical research and contributions to education. In 2009 he won the Australian Museum CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science. In 2010 he was named a "Queensland Great" by the Queensland Premier. He graduated MD PhD DSc from the University of Queensland and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne. His interests are in the field of immunity and immunopathogenesis to malaria and group A streptococcus/rheumatic fever, with particular relevance to the development of vaccines.
