Short story/flash fiction reading by Tania Hershman. Tania Hershman’s short fictions have won her many prizes. She is a consummate author of extraordinary brief fiction that for me, crosses the boundary between poetry and prose in a very exciting way. Now, as well as two collections of short fiction, My Mother Was an Upright Piano (Tangent Books) and The White Road (Salt), Tania is also co-author of a forthcoming book from Bloomsbury’s academic imprint, Writing Short stories, which is A Writers' and Artists' Companion that she has co-written with another critically acclaimed short story writer and novelist, Courttia Newland. The recording was made on April 30th 2014 at the Gwdihw Cafe Bar in Cardiff during the launch of issue 2 of Bare Fiction magazine. Tania Hershman, one of our judges for the inaugural Bare Fiction Prize. Flash fiction—also known as short short fiction, sudden fiction, or "a smoke long" fiction—has been around since Aesop's Fables, but it's never been more popular, with magazines and websites now dedicated solely to it. It even has its own national day. In this Litro Lab episode, I talk to flash fiction writers David Gaffney (Sawn-off Tales, Salt, 2006), Tania Hershman (The White Road and Other Stories, Salt, 2008; My Mother Was an Upright Piano, Tangent, 2012) and Calum Kerr, director of National Flash Fiction Day (NFFD), about what makes great micro-fiction. We also hear some of their ultra-short stories, among pieces by Franz Kafka and Vanessa Gebbie. Featured stories (in this order): "Vegetable Mineral" by Tania Hershman, from My Mother Was an Upright Piano, Tangent, 2012. Read by Tania Hershman "The Cares of a Family Man" by Franz Kafka, translated by Willa and Edwin Muir, from A Country Doctor, 1919. Read by Greg Page "Flight" by Vanessa Gebbie, from Jawbreakers, NFFD, 2012. Read by Claire Lacey "Happy Place" by David Gaffney, from Sawn-off Tales, Salt, 2006. Read by Kenny Reid "Who's the Boss" by Calum Kerr Read by Richard Koworld "Of Human Kindness (Buenos Aires)" by Vanessa Gebbie Read by Claire Lacey MUSIC CREDITS: 'Piano Between', Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ —Emily Cleaver See full article at http://www.litro.co.uk/?p=30641

Mainstream and avant-garde poets and fiction writers have been exploring the literary potential of the computer for decades, creating work that goes far beyond today’s e-books. The creators of electronic literature have developed new interface methods, new techniques for collaboration, and new ways of linking language, computing, and other media elements. How has electronic literature influenced other media, including the Web and the book? What are the implications of having literary projects in the digital sphere alongside other forms of communication and art? Katherine Hayles is professor in the literature program at Duke University. Her books include Electronic Literature: New Horizons for the Literary (2008) and My Mother Was a Computer: Digital Subjects and Literary Texts (2005). Rita Raley is associate professor of English at the University of California at Santa Barbara where she directs Transcriptions, a research and pedagogic initiative on literature and the culture of information. Her most recent publications include the co-edited Electronic Literature Collection, volume 2.
