In this chat, we get to meet aja monet. aja is a poet and songwriter and composer, who has just released her 2nd album of jazzy, inviting, varied, potent spoken word music, entitled the color of rain. And in this conversation, she and I talk a lot about this record. We get into what led to its inception, what some of the songs touch on specifically, as well as the musicality inherent in poetry itself. We talk about the people who worked with her on this record, what inspires her, and more. We also touch on poetry as an art form, and reading and writing moreover, which was especially intriguing for me as an English educator myself. It's a wide-ranging, warm, intellectual conversation that I'm so happy I got to have, with such a poetic force as aja. Thank you for listening.
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the incredible musician and poet AJA MONET!To use a couple of words to sum up the essence of someone is a strange thing indeed, and this subject comes up in this chat too. The idea of indentity versus what one strives for. This is most definitely an episode for the appreciators of the craft of poetry, but not ONLY that - it's more like a demonstration of why everything else around it matters so much, and how poetry is achieved by plugging into community, society, and life its very self. It's fascinating hearing about Aja's New York upbringing, and how exposure to the urban envrionment and the people within it helped cultivate the person she would grow into - Aja really does live and embody the life of a creator, and the self-proclaimed status of 'surrealist blues poet' is perfect indeed. You'll definitely get a huge amount from the chat if you yourself are involved in words, but if you're in the least bit creative and find that side of your life as crucial as air and water, you'll get so much from the chat. In this arts24 interview, Grammy-nominated poet aja monet joins us in Paris to talk about her new collection "Florida Water" and what it means to make art in a moment of political turmoil. She opens up about living through the new wave of American culture-war battles – from book bans to attacks on arts funding – and explains why she believes poetry has become an important tool for resistance, healing and community. aja monet also reflects on the heartbreak at the centre of "Florida Water", her long-standing activism for Palestine and the loneliness she sees shaping a generation. With poems like "Castaway" and "For Sonia", she explores how poetry can help us face climate grief, injustice and the feeling of being overwhelmed by the world.

Episode 73: Keyon Harrold. Everywhere I turn, I see Keyon Harrold. He's widely regarded as one of the greatest trumpeters alive today, pushing the new jazz generation forward with power and soul. His solo album Foreverland was GRAMMY-nominated this year for Best Alternative Jazz Album, and his resume is stacked — Jay-Z, Common, Erykah Badu, Diana Ross, Mac Miller, Robert Glasper, the Count Basie Orchestra, Terrace Martin — and he played all the trumpet parts in the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead. Keyon is a dear friend and an incredible human being. He drops so much wisdom in this episode and truly inspired me with his words. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the great Keyon Harrold. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Reiki master Brett Bevell is author of several books, including Psychic Reiki, The Wizard's Guide to Energy Healing, The Reiki Magic Guide to Self-Attunement, and Reiki for Spiritual Healing. Brett is also a pioneer in the field of energy healing apps, first exploring this concept in 2013 through his book New Reiki Software for Divine Living, and now offering his energy healing work through the Soulvana App by Mindvalley. Since receiving his Reiki master initiation in 1995, Bevell has dedicated himself to discovering new Reiki techniques that work collaboratively with the higher self. These simple techniques are not only highly effective, but also shift Reiki into a practice of daily living that can transform even the most mundane aspects of our lives into works of healing. Brett's clients include several Hollywood stars and screenwriters, and he is publicly endorsed by Carrie Ann Inaba from ABC's Dancing with the Stars. Also, a poet and performance artist, Brett is author of America Needs a Woman President, and America Needs a Buddhist President, a poem that initially aired nationwide on NPR's All Things Considered. Bevell has electrified audiences around the world with his live oral recitations, and he has often been compared to the late poet Allen Ginsberg. Bevell's poetry is featured in the anthology Chorus: A Literary Mixed Tape and he performed with Saul Williams and Aja Monet at Joe's Pub in New York City as part of the book's release. Bevell's work is also part NPR's permanent website archives. There’s a heartstopping moment in “for sonia,” Aja Monet’s ruminative elegy for the revolutionary poet Sonia Sanchez, when she recalls uttering the word “poetry” at a community organizing meeting, only to be met with flustered refusal. “Who’s got time for poems when the world’s on fire?” she asks, either quoting a naysayer or posing the question to herself. The answer, of course, lies in the poems themselves — especially as Monet embodies and delivers them in partnership with a corps of intuitive improvisers. We sat down with her in New York the morning after her 2025 Winter Jazzfest performance, to talk about poetic practice, political necessity, musical imperatives — and the fires that were literally consuming her adopted city of Los Angeles. Don’t miss some deep truths from one of our most committed truth-tellers. In this edition of our Arts24 music show, Jennifer Ben Brahim chats with poet and activist Aja Monet. She started putting pen to paper at just eight years old, thanks to a fascination with storytelling and typewriters. Her poetry has garnered critical acclaim, such as the collection "My Mother was a Freedom Fighter". Her activism has taken her from New York to Palestine. Aja's debut album "When the Poems Do What They Do" is a fluid blend of poetry and jazz. It is also an ode to some of the greats from the Black Arts Movement like Nikki Giovanni and Amiri Baraka. Aja described how she felt like a "spiritual archivist" when putting together the album. She is on tour in Europe with the record and is set to drop a new collection of poetry entitled "Florida Waters" this June.

If anyone can ground us thoughtfully in this moment, with all of its challenges and all its potential, it's renowned professor, activist, scholar and writer Angela Davis. In her writing, lecturing and many decades of activism, Davis has shown a unique ability to pull competing struggles into a single story — a story of systems and power. In this special first episode of "Laura Flanders & Friends" (formerly, The Laura Flanders Show), Laura is joined by Angela Davis, a leading voice in the movement for abolition and feminism who has lots to share about her evolution and how decades of activism are coming together in this moment. From Palestine to elections, to our carceral state and collective liberation, this kickoff conversation is packed with Davis' insight and the teachings from her latest book “Abolition: Politics, Practices, Promises, Vol. 1”. What has Davis learned in her 80 years as a freedom fighter? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on the words of the late poet and essayist June Jordan, who writes, “I was born a Black woman/and now/I am become a Palestinian.”“When vast numbers of people come together to defend a vision of the future that they would like to see, this is how change happens. It doesn't happen because we elect a particular person to office.” - Angela Y. Davis“[In] Birmingham, Jewish people were the very first white people to support the struggle against racism . . .
