We're joined by N. Katherine Hayles, Distinguished Research Professor in English at UCLA, to think through cognition in the broadest and most scaled sense. Hayles is among the foundational thinkers of posthumanism in its Anglophone register, and this conversation tracks her intellectual trajectory from the question of how we became posthuman to her most recent project: an integrated cognitive framework that extends from bacteria to AI. The opening provocation is one she has been developing since large language models appeared as a genuinely literary phenomenon, the claim that LLMs do not speak natural language but produce a computational simulation of it.The umwelt of an LLM (its 'operative world-horizon,' in Uexküll's sense) overlaps with the human umwelt enough for communication to occur, but the divergences are large and consequential. This leads to the question of cognition itself. Against definitions that make consciousness the threshold of cognitive status, Hayles proposes the SIEPAL framework: Sensing, Interpreting, Responding, Anticipating, Learning, under which bacteria, algorithms, and ecosystems all qualify as cognitive. The non-conscious, on this account, isn't pre-cognitive but is in many ways more cognitively capable: faster, closer to environmental noise, less committed to the narratives of coherence that consciousness requires. The final section breaks genuinely new ground with Hayles's turn to analog computation: the argument that digital computation is a historical blip, that biological life has always operated on analog principles, and that the future of computation (neuromorphic chips, organoid computers, hybrid analog-digital architectures) represents not a departure from but a return to what life has always done. She proposes the analog humanities as a corrective to digital humanities, and the computational humanities as the synthesis that might finally close the gap between biological and technological cognition. This one is very much worth enjoying in dialogue with our previous epsiode on the digital. Some references:N. In this wide-ranging conversation, I met with acclaimed literary theorist, philosopher and technology scholar N. Katherine Hayles, whose pioneering work has reshaped how we understand the boundaries between humans and machines, cognition and computation, biology and code, artificial intelligence and artificial life. We primarily discussed Katherine's new book Bacteria to AI: Human Futures with our Nonhuman Symbionts. We also discuss elements of Hayles' other works such as How We Became Posthuman and Unthought: The Power of the Cognitive Nonconscious. Hayles has long argued that cognition is not the exclusive domain of conscious, rational minds. In her work, cognition is distributed, embodied, and extended across human, nonhuman, and technical systems. In this chat we explore what it means to take that seriously in a moment when large language models (LLMs), AI, and synthetic biology are reconfiguring the nature of agency and intelligence. When Jordan Hayles was just nine years old, he sat wide-eyed in the studio of The National, mesmerized by the lights, the cameras, and the grand chair behind the anchor's desk. That early spark turned into a flame in high school, where he discovered the power of editing through mashups and music videos. Years later, he's become one of Canada's most thoughtful editors, with a career that's spanned lifestyle TV, independent film, and corporate campaigns, including the unforgettable NBA Championship video for the Toronto Raptors that left him in tears at the edit suite. In this episode of The Visual Intonation Podcast, we dive into the journey of a post-production powerhouse whose path was paved by hustle, humility, and heart. From his beginnings at Mohawk College to his early days cutting tape, Jordan shares how a passion for storytelling and a relentless belief in his skills guided him through spaces where Black editors are often few and far between. His work at Vice, CBC, MLSE, and on hit series like Next Stop and TallBoyz speaks to a career built not just on talent, but on connection, mentorship, and vision. But Jordan's story isn't just about credits and cuts, it's about community. He reflects on giving back through volunteer work at the Nia Centre for the Arts, mentoring the next generation of BIPOC creators, and how being “STiXX”—his self-branded identity born from being the skinny kid—became a badge of pride. Jordan doesn't just edit for the screen; he edits with purpose, helping others see a place for themselves in a space that too often overlooks them. Tune in as Jordan Hayles brings raw honesty, sharp insight, and infectious inspiration to the mic. Whether he's talking about crying in an edit suite or getting discovered on a Twitter thread, he reminds us that this industry isn't just about who you know, it's about what you show. And Jordan's been showing us excellence, one frame at a time. Jordan Hayles' Website: https://www.jordanhayleseditor.com/Jordan Hayles' Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordan.a.hayles/Jordan Hayles' BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jahayles.bsky.socialJordan Hayles' ImDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm7391721/Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

This weeks guest is Madeleine Hayles who is a sommelier and the owner of Happy Coffee And Wine, a cafe and wine bar in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Mads had done several stints at classic restaurants like Terroni and higher end fine dining at Actinolite and Hop Goods Foodliner, but she found her passion working at Midfield Wine Bar. After 4 years there, Mads and several partners opened up Happy Coffee and Wine in 2019 - a neighbourhood spot focused on keeping wine diverse and affordable. The cafe and wine bar is more likely to carry a pet-nat than a barolo, but aren't necessarily a natural wine bar. More recently, Mads has gotten into winemaking. Mads has done a couple of harvests at Trail Estate Winery in Prince Edward County, and at 2Naturkinder in Franken, Germany. Currently, Mads is working on her own wine project focusing on Ontario hybrid varietals, hopefully to be released in the new year. Mads is also working on a new collaboration with Jess Maiorano, the chef & owner of Pasta Forever, a specialty pasta shop, Italian grocer & caterer on Dundas West. The new restaurant is named Zia's Place and is set to open in January 2025. Hey Friends,     What would you do if you had just finally broke thing off with that not so good for you partner,  and found out you're pregnant?  Would you keep it? Get back together? Would you go it alone and become the best ingle mother you could be?   Well that's what Tanya Hayle had to figure out when she broke up with her boyfriend and discovered she was pregnant.     Listen in as we talk about Where she was in her life and relationships in her 30's. Living her single girl in the city life!   Ending her long distance relationship and wanting to find someone local to have some fun with. Her on and off relationship with her then boyfriend and deciding it's time to call it.  Not before one final night of togetherness.  Being late, peeing on a stick. And seeing that + sign.  Her now what moment: Deciding to keep or have an abortion.  Choosing to keep the baby because she didn't want to have lifelong regret  Telling her mom she was pregnant and fearing her disappointment.  Constantly reminded about her aloness during the pregnancy.  Turning down her dream job. And the reality of being unprepared for being a single parent.  Other ways of being a mother other than birthing. Black Mom's Connection - only happened because of Jackson and becoming a mom.  Conversations with her son about not having a father.  Mothering without a mother.    Doesn't not regret having her son, does regret not providing a better father.  How Black Mom's connection began, with needing Sunscreens for her black kid.  The group grew rapidly as a community  and is now a Non-for-Profit.  Responding to the needs of the community - Goal is to be a $10 Million dollar organization  Grateful that her employer understands and appreciates what she brings to the table as entrepreneur and mom.    Do you love the show? Kate Hayles, one of the founding theorists of posthumanism, a key term to understanding the changing and dynamic relationship between humans and machines in the digital age. What is the role of the Humanities in understanding our relationship to technology? How have our technological innovations have changed the nature of “the human?" And what is the future of the human relationship to our machines--and to our understanding of ourselves? Dr. N. Katherine Hayles is a Distinguished Research Professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles and the James B. Duke Professor of Literature Emerita at Duke University. She teaches and writes on the relations of literature, science and technology in the 20th and 21st centuries. Her most recent book, Postprint: Books and Becoming Computational, was published by the Columbia University Press (Spring 2021). Among her many books is her landmark work How We Became Posthuman: Virtual Bodies in Cybernetics, Literature and Informatics, which won the Rene Wellek Prize for the Best Book in Literary Theory for 1998-99, and Writing Machines, which won the Suzanne Langer Award for Outstanding Scholarship. She has been recognized by many fellowships and awards, including two NEH Fellowships, a Guggenheim, a Rockefeller Residential Fellowship at Bellagio, and two University of California Presidential Research Fellowships.  Dr. Hayles is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science. She holds a B.S. from the Rochester Institute of Technology, an M.S. from the California Institute of Technology, an M.A. from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. Within the field of Posthuman Studies, Dr. Hayles'  book How We Became Posthuman is considered "the key text which brought posthumanism to broad international attention. Her work has laid the foundations for multiple areas of thinking across a wide variety of urgent issues at the intersection of technology, including cybernetic history, feminism, postmodernism, cultural and literary criticism, and is vital to our ongoing conversations about the changing relationship between humans and the technologies we create.
