Fresh Focus #54: Myth – Eating Perfectly

Fresh Focus

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2022 6:44

We are back with the sixth and final episode of the Fresh Focus podcast's Myth Busters series. We've explored so many topics over the course of the past five episodes- from carbohydrates, to metabolism, to gluten, dairy, the scale, and protein in vegetarian diets. We are rounding out the series with a myth that is a big misconception when people come into the world of nutrition- and that is in order to be healthy, it is necessary to eat “perfectly” 100% of the time. You heard that right! The fact that you need to eat perfectly is entirely a myth. It's just not true. And on top of that, there isn't anybody who expects you to eat perfectly healthy all the time- not even dietitians or dietetic interns do. After all, we are all human and we all have foods that we absolutely love that may not be as nutrient dense. When you put pressure on yourself to eat absolutely perfectly and tell yourself you can never have, say, pizza, you are more likely than not setting yourself up to crave those foods that you deem off limits- even more often than you would otherwise. This concept is explained in psychology as the Ironic Process Theory, first theorized by Daniel Wegner in 1987. This episode will walk you through an exercise in Ironic Process Theory and talk more about how it applies to nutrition. While it is undeniable that food is an important part of health, it's also important to remember that our health is made up of many different dimensions- including mental health, emotional health, intellectual health, and more. Choosing foods that fuel your soul every so often may be just as important as choosing foods that fuel your body.If this episode strikes a chord with you, go ahead and ask your registered dietitian to talk to you about the concept of intuitive eating. It may be just right for you!

Nutrition advice is anywhere and everywhere these days. The information can be overwhelming to sift through. Here at the Fresh Focus podcast we thought it would be a great time to review some common nutrition myths. We will be going through several nutrition topics and diving in more to help all of you out there listening. In our Myth Busters series, we invited Abbie Spiwak, RDN, to chat about a common myth she hears in her Healthy Teaching Cooking class, and a few strategies to help combat it when you have a similar feeling.   Myth:  Eating Healthy is just too Expensive.    We know everyone thinks this from time to time. That's why the VA Dietitians want to help sort things out, and come up with the best plan. In episode 49, we review three strategies to help make healthy eating changes and those can help us understand how to add some healthier food choices to our meals and snacks. 1.       Recipe Selection/Replacement: Look for recipes with similar ingredients to help build our weekly meal plan. Replace ingredients in recipes with alternative ingredients we already have available at home, instead of purchasing extra items you may end of wasting. 2.      Food Budgeting: Divide up our grocery store trips along with planning the food budget for the month. If grocery shopping twice a month, make sure we aren't buying all fresh items on the first trip as they wont last all month.    3.      Time Management: Look at the calendar. If we will not be home, don't plan for an evening meal that takes extra time to prepare. Try a slow cooker meal for that evening. Or if you have an early appointment the next day try preparing Crustless Quiche Muffins to have on hand for a delicious grab and go breakfast on your way out the door.  Check out HTK YouTube channel for more great recipe ideas! I'm going to break down 7 nutrition myths that are especially prevalent among endurance athletes. These myths also exist in the strength training world, but they're particularly pernicious for people who run, jog, swim, cycle, or do any sort of endurance training. These people know that nutrition is key to performance. Unfortunately, while some advice out there is good, a lot of nutrition advice is just flat-out nonsense. So in this episode of the podcast, I'm going to lay some of the worst offenders to rest. Timestamps: 4:01 - Myth: Eating lots of carbs is the most important part of nutrition. 8:39 - Myth: You have to eat within 30 minutes of finishing an endurance workout. 10:38 - Should you eat before or during an endurance training workout? 12:08 - Myth: Energy bars and gels are better than whole foods. 13:43 - The best carbs for before, during, or after a workout. 14:39 - Myth: Endurance trainees should take electrolyte supplements. 18:27 - Why you should be skeptical of electrolyte and hydration supplements. 24:33 - Myth: Getting leaner makes you faster. 27:37 - Myth: endurance athletes should never diet. 31:07 - Myth: You should train to "earn" your calories. Every time you turn around there is new hype about fad diets, super foods and eating plans; all with glowing reviews about the amazing results you can get if you use them. They may sound good but if those claims are not backed by research, dietitians don’t promote them. We are trained from day one to look for evidence-based research about any claims. Even if it sounds amazing and people are benefiting, we dig deep to find out more about it. We want to see evidence such as who else could be benefiting from it, who it could be harming and what long term results there might be. It is never a simple answer when it comes to nutrition. There are always many layers to investigate.Today’s interview is with returning guest, Dietitian Lisa Andrews. She has been recognized twice as the Dietitian of the Year by the state of Ohio, so I asked her to address ten of the top food myths.1. Myth: Only Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Truth: Health foods are found in every area of the store. Read labels. Look for high protein and fiber, low sodium foods. Consider having a dietitian take you on a “grocery tour” to teach you what to look for and avoid.2. Myth: Frozen meals aren’t good for you. Truth: Many frozen meals now come with healthy ingredients and they are portion controlled. They are easy to have on hand for times when you would otherwise go out, order in or settle for whatever is readily available.3. Myth: Frozen fruits and veggies are less healthy than fresh ones. Fact: Most fruits and veggies are frozen within several hours of being picked so they are at the peak of their freshness. Items that you have fresh at home, but will not get to before they go bad, can be frozen to use later, reducing food waste.4. Myth: Several small meals throughout the day are better than 3 large meals. Fact: There is no one eating plan that is right for everyone. Meal timing is dependent on the unique needs of each individual, taking into consideration their hunger, how they feel and their energy requirements.5. Myth: Eating after 6 PM causes weight gain. Fact: What you eat throughout the day and the type of food you consume in the evening, determines whether you gain weight.6. Myth: You should only eat organic foods. Fact: This is a personal choice. Pesticide levels in non-organic food are so low that there is no problem eating them, especially in items with skin or peel that you remove. Buy organic if you like, but don’t feel guilty if you don’t.7. Myth: You shouldn’t eat eggs if you are worried about your cholesterol. Fact: Eggs have good properties in both the white and the yolk. The sides people usually eat with eggs, such as bacon, sausage and cheese, are more harmful to a healthy diet than the eggs so practice moderation in all of them.8. Myth: Avoid all saturated fat. Fact: Try to limit saturated fat to 3 grams or less per serving. Many relatively healthy foods such as natural peanut butter contain saturated fat.9. Myth: Detox diets help to cleanse and remove toxins from your body. Fact: No, they don’t. The liver, kidney and lungs are what removes toxins from your body. Cut out extra calories and take out anything toxic that might be doing harm to your body like processed sugar but make it sustainable to your health. Strange, severely limiting diets, weird teas or similar short-term fixes can cause more harm than good.10. Myth: Drinking coffee is an unhealthy habit. Fact: Coffee has a lot of health benefits. It reduces Parkinson’s, may help with diabetes and gout and is a good source of antioxidants. It is what you put in your coffee that can be unhealthy.Lisa is the owner of Sound Bites Nutrition. Hello ladies, and welcome back to the Slim & Satisfied Podcast! On today's episode, I discuss the 5 PCOS nutrition tips and myths you should ignore. Following up with our topic from last week's episode, I reiterate that while the Internet, social media, and online blogs can offer community and great advice for women with PCOS, they can also perpetuate a lot of misinformation and make it difficult to decide between what's credible and what isn't. So, in today's episode I want to help clarify some common diet misconceptions given to women with PCOS so as to help you not become distracted by unhelpful advice. Instead, I want to help clear away confusion and provide you with the tools for becoming more confident in your eating and health decisions. Here are 5 PCOS Nutrition Tips to Ignore: 1. The Myth: You shouldn't eat fruit/ you should eliminate ALL forms of sugar. The Truth: Unprocessed fruit does have health benefits and naturally occurring fructose won't significantly raise your blood sugar. 2. The Myth: Eat all the fat that you want. The Truth: This advice will make your insulin-resistance worse. Instead, pay attention to the type of fat you're consuming, focusing on adding mono- and poly-unsaturated fats to your diet. 3. The Myth: Fill in the gaps of your diet with supplements. The Truth: Supplements should not be used to fill in the holes of a diet but rather be used to optimize what are already healthy behaviors. 4. The Myth: Gluten is inflammatory and should be avoided with PCOS. The Truth: There is no research that proves gluten is inflammatory, and eliminating gluten from your diet can be restrictive and cut out foods that could have potential health benefits. 5. The Myth: Eating smaller meals more frequently is beneficial for weight-loss for women with PCOS. The Truth: This technique does not work for most people because it's a practice that constantly gives the body more food to digest than it needs. It also forces you to eat according to the clock rather than according to when you are hungry, which is not a healthy habit to create. I elaborate on each of these points further within the podcast, offering alternative healthy behaviors in lieu of these common pieces of advice. Ultimately though, I want to encourage you to become educated about the health decisions you're making so that you are prepared to make choices about your health that best work for you and are sustainable for your lifestyle. What You'll Learn in This Podcast Episode: The differences between processed and unprocessed fruit and the best ways to incorporate fruit into your diet What fats/foods to eliminate or cut back on in your diet and which to add more of Why eating smaller meals can be detrimental to your health plan and long-term healthy eating goals Advice for making sure you are not being too restrictive in your diet or over-complicating your food decisions Helpful Links: Questions, or interested in becoming a client?
