Why Are We Failing Our Elders at the Dinner Table? In a world that prides itself on nutritional science and medical progress, why do so many older adults continue to suffer silently—malnourished, misunderstood, and medically overburdened?Over 60% of India's elderly are either malnourished or at high risk. And yet, geriatric nutrition remains a blind spot in public health. Slower metabolisms, multiple medications, cognitive decline, shrinking appetites—these are not just symptoms of aging, but signs of a deeper crisis that's unfolding quietly across kitchens, hospital wards, and old age homes. To unpack this invisible emergency, we speak with Dr. Gaurav Sharma, Consultant in Geriatric Medicine at AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad. An AIIMS alumnus and seasoned geriatrician, Dr. Sharma has worked across the care continuum—rural clinics, high-end hospitals, and global conferences—advocating for dignified, evidence-backed elder care.We explore:• What malnutrition in older adults really looks like• How gut changes, oral health, and medications silently strip nutrients• Why family norms and food taboos often cause more harm than help• How nutrition links directly to dignity, independence, and longevity• And what every caregiver must stop ignoringIf you are caring for an aging parent, grandparent, or planning your own older years, this conversation is both a wake-up call and a guide.About Nutrition Every Day: A special podcast series by The Good Sight and Rise Against Hunger India, bringing sharp, grounded insights on health, food systems, and human dignity. For feedback or to participate, write to us at contact@thegoodsight.orgCreditsHost: Shreya MGuest: Dr. Gaurav SharmaResearch: Alisha CShow Artwork: Rajnikant SProduced by: The Good SightConcept: The Good Sight & Rise Against Hunger India#NutritionEveryDay #ElderlyNutrition #HealthyAgeing #PublicHealthIndia #DignityInAgeing #GeriatricCare #FoodSecurity #NutritionJustice #TheGoodSight #RiseAgainstHungerIndia #CaregivingIndia #BetterFoodBetterFuture

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. David Klurfeld—longtime USDA scientist and one of the few insiders to publicly challenge the WHO's classification of red meat as a carcinogen. We go deep into the flawed evidence behind the infamous 2015 IARC report, why nutritional epidemiology often fails to prove causality, and how a small group of researchers helped shape global policy with low-quality science. If you've ever felt confused about meat, saturated fat, or dietary guidelines, this conversation will help you think critically about what “counts” as evidence—and who gets to decide. We cover:Dr. Klurfeld's personal journey and lessons from a career in public healthWhy the 2015 IARC red meat classification was based on weak and inconsistent evidenceHow observational studies and “allegiance bias” mislead nutrition scienceThe politics of dietary guidelines and the role of the USDA and WHOWhat the media got wrong—and why red meat remains a nutrient-dense foodWhether you're a clinician, dietitian, or simply trying to make better nutrition decisions, this episode is a powerful reminder that bias, groupthink and weak data can distort science and mislead the public. We need to be discerning about the nutrition and health advice we follow. Who is Dr. David Klurfeld?Dr. David Klurfeld is a nutritional scientist and former National Program Leader for Human Nutrition at the USDA's Agricultural Research Service. He also served as Professor and Chair of Nutrition and Food Science at Wayne State University and Associate Editor of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Are you one of the millions of Americans who eat the Standard American Diet? Even if you're not, you're likely at risk of developing pre-diabeties, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation. But, DON'T panic, because today's episode is packed with simple steps to help you take control of your blood sugar and lower your risk of diabetes and chronic disease. On this Salad with a Side of Fries episode, host Jenn Trepeck tackles the hard truth: many people are already pre-diabetic and don't even know it. From hidden insulin resistance to chronic inflammation, Jenn breaks down how the American diet and lifestyle are fueling a national health crisis. You'll learn how poor sleep, stress, a lack of fiber, and nutrient-depleted foods undermine your metabolic health—and what you can do today to take control and manage your risks. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Why is the Standard American diet the recipe for pre-diabetes and diabetes, and what is insulin resistance(04:18) Metabolic health connects to every system, and the ultra-processed food dilemma(09:48) Why supplements are important(14:30) Everyone is pre-diabetic, unless. Nutrition: protein, fiber, quality fat(21:31) America's fiber problem and the role of the microbiome(26:55) Our society is sedentary(30:35) The impact stress and loneliness can have on your health(34:56) Are you sleep deprived(37:30) Let's talk about the environment and toxins(42:07) If you don't like it, don't eat it and focus on preventionKEY TAKEAWAYS:Most people eating the Standard American Diet are already pre-diabetic due to high consumption of ultra-processed foods, even if their labs don't reflect it yet. Modern farming, soil depletion, and long-distance transport have stripped our food of nutrients, making quality sourcing and supplementation essential.Staying ahead of metabolic disease means taking daily action—moving your body, managing stress, eating well, sleeping, and staying connected. Even a short walk after a meal can significantly reduce blood sugar spikes. Daily activity improves energy and focus, builds muscle, enhances insulin sensitivity, and monitors glucose levels.Just because a drink is labeled “prebiotic” doesn't mean it replaces real vegetables. Whole fruits and vegetables provide a variety of fibers that support gut health more effectively than most supplements or processed drinks. You can't supplement your way out of poor nutrition. Supplements are only as good as their quality. Many synthetic options don't break down or absorb adequately, making them useless. Food first, then smart supplementation.Chronic stress triggers hormonal changes that lead to insulin resistance and fat storage. The damage builds over time because most people don't recognize their stress. Managing stress is just as crucial as managing diet and exercise.QUOTES: (08:56) “Our food supply is ripening while in transit, not connected to the vine where nutrients come from.” - Jenn Trepeck(18:54) “Variety is your friend. Eat the rainbow.” - Jenn Trepeck(23:30) “I'm a big fan of supplements, but you cannot supplement your way out of poor nutrition. Food first, then mart supplementation.” - Jenn Trepeck(39:36) “Next time you need to replace a mattress or a pillow. Let's make sure it's a material that isn't going to off-gas toxins.” - Jenn Trepeck"It comes down to default vs design because the way our world is set-up around us, the default would easily be the recipe for pre-diabetes and diabetes. The main idea is that a carnivore diet can resolve chronic inflammation and health issues that conventional approaches like calorie restriction cannot, as demonstrated by JT's personal experience and experiments.KISMETJT discovered that while on a carnivore diet, he could consume up to 4,500 calories daily without gaining weight, contradicting conventional weight management theories that focus primarily on calorie counts rather than food quality.EPISODE SUMMARYIn this episode, Dr. Philip Ovadia interviews Carnivore JT, a former sports medicine professional and fitness trainer who once firmly believed that weight management was simply about "calories in, calories out." JT shares how his health declined in his thirties despite following conventional dietary advice, then dramatically improved after adopting a carnivore diet. His personal transformation included the elimination of lifelong eczema, psoriasis, acne, and joint pain from previous sports injuries.JT discusses his self-experiments comparing carnivore eating with standard American diet consumption, finding he could eat far more calories on carnivore without weight gain. He addresses how scientific research is often influenced by industry funding, making it difficult for consumers to find unbiased information. The main idea that emerges is that food quality matters more than calorie counting, and a meat-based diet can resolve chronic inflammation issues that conventional approaches cannot address.NOTABLE QUOTE"I had aches and pains since I was in my twenties... And since going carnivore, I feel better than when I was 21. www.colossusfitness.comSummary of episode:Listed points:1 (01:00) - Carbs are bad for you. Fat makes you fat. Sodium is bad. Sugar is bad. (FEAR MONGERING)-if we listen to what people say is bad, we would be eating literally nothing2 (02:09) - You should only eat 100% clean3 (05:13) - Fasting boosts metabolism & is the #1 fat loss tool.-Fasting reduces energy expenditure in the short term.-Fasting can be a useful tool to control energy intake but it isn't magic.4 (06:52) - You can't lose weight because of starvation mode.-Starvation mode is claimed to occur when a prolonged calorie deficit slows down and halts a person's metabolism, making further weight loss impossible & can even cause weight gain. -This is FALSE. A calorie deficit will always result in weight loss over time.-The law of thermodynamics applies to everyone. Cals in cals out is legit.5 (06:14) - High-protein diets damage kidneys. For people with pre-existing kidney conditions, high protein intake may worsen kidney function6 (08:08) - Eating before bed causes weight gain7 (09:56) - All calories are the same.Reality: Not all calories have the same effect on the body. The source of calories matters significantly. For example, 100 calories from a sugary soda will affect your blood sugar and insulin levels differently than 100 calories from a portion of vegetables or lean protein. Nutrient-dense foods tend to be more filling and provide essential nutrients, while empty-calorie foods (like sweets and junk food) can lead to overconsumption without providing much nutritional value.-The time of day you eat doesn't directly affect weight gain. What matters more is your overall calorie intake, nutrient quality, and portion control. Thanks for listening! We genuinely appreciate every single one of you listening.➢Follow us on instagram @colossusfit➢Apply to get your Polished Physique: https://colossusfitness.com/Support the show
