This episode may be for you even if you never identified with eating disorders in menopause or at any age. Eat clean? Read labels twice? Following “rules” about food yet find it backfiring on you?  One could shift from wanting to “eat clean” to turning into orthorexia, influenced by social media, intermittent fasting and use of Smart Scales. Do you think you have an eating disorder in menopause, or maybe a loved one? Tune in to this episode!   My Guest: Amy Goldsmith, RDN, LDN, is the founder of Kindred Nutrition & Kinetics, a private practice that provides evidence-based medical nutrition therapy in Sports Nutrition and Eating Disorders/Disordered Eating. With over 25 years of experience in Sports Nutrition and Eating Disorder expertise, Amy is an expert in understanding the human body's biochemistry and works collaboratively with each client's performance and clinical care team to help them reach their health and wellness goals.   Questions We Answer in This Episode: [00:13:50] What is orthorexia? [00:07:26] Menopause brings hormonal swings, how often do you see menopausal patients experience an eating disorder for the first time? Or is it mostly women who have a history of disordered eating? [00:09:25] Does the overload of “wellness experts” in social media create confusion and fear of foods we need, particularly for women in midlife? How do you help them find the real truth about what to eat? [00:35:53] How easy is it to slip from “I just want to eat healthy” into orthorexia? What are the red flags when healthy eating turns into an unhealthy obsession? [00:19:07] Where do you begin working with someone who is ready so that it is non-threatening and non-judgmental?   From Wellness to Obsession: Are You Facing Eating Disorders in Menopause?   What is Orthorexia? Obsession with “clean” or restricted eating. Can also be the illusion of control and safety from disordered eating behaviors. Red flags: compulsive food thoughts, social withdrawal, avoidance. Average recovery time: 7 years but change begins with addressing small, meaningful issues.   Things to look out for: Social Media Fuels body comparison, diet fads, and misinformed health behaviors. Intermittent Fasting Dangers of fasting: sarcopenia or muscle loss, disordered behavior. May be harmful, especially in active midlife women prioritizing muscle preservation. Smart Scale and Body Composition Fixation on scale weight despite fitness improvements like muscle gain and inch loss. Pro: tracking lean mass. Con: can trigger obsession or shame.   Key Takeaways Eating issues in midlife are common – due to stress, hormones, and unresolved issues from earlier life. Orthorexia is an obsessive focus on healthy or clean eating that can be dangerous and restrictive. Early intervention is key – it only takes two weeks of obsession to begin disordered patterns. Not all RDs are the same – find one trained in eating disorders for effective help.   Connect with Amy: Amy's Website - Kindred Nutrition Facebook - Kindred Nutrition Instagram - @amygoldsmithrd    Other Episodes You Might Like: Previous Episode - Cortisol and Exercise in Menopause Next Episode - Save Your Knees and Shoulders Without Surgery More Like This - How Emotional Eating Can Be the Hidden Reason for Weight Gain Resources: Join Flipping 50 Menopause Fitness Specialist® to become a coach! The language we use around food reveals a troubling cultural obsession. Have you ever caught yourself saying "I was good because I didn't eat that cupcake" or "I was bad this weekend because I had pizza"? This powerful episode peels back the layers of how we've assigned moral value not just to food, but to ourselves based on what we eat.We dive headfirst into the origins of the "clean eating" movement, tracing its evolution from the early 2010s when documentaries, fitness influencers, and tribal diet communities began reshaping how we think about nutrition. Rather than promoting actual health, many of these approaches began selling identities – ways to belong – rather than sustainable nutrition principles. The consequences can be severe. Extreme restriction often leads to binge-eating cycles, social isolation when meals become stressors instead of connectors, and an unhealthy relationship with food that affects mental wellbeing. Through personal stories, including experiences with competitive bodybuilding, we reveal how even "healthy" approaches can backfire dramatically. But there's a better way forward. Discover the practical power of the 80/20 approach, why adding protein might be more effective than eliminating food groups, and how to develop boundaries rather than restrictions around eating. We explore why a flexible structure focused on consistency trumps short-term perfection every time.Whether you've struggled with food guilt, avoided social events because of dietary restrictions, or simply want a healthier relationship with eating, this episode provides the perspective and practical tools to break free from food morality and build sustainable nutrition habits that nourish both body and mind.

She shares how her views evolved through personal experience, including her recovery from a food addiction and the politicization of her 12-step support group. Anna Vocino brings her culinary expertise and health advocacy to the table, discussing her brand Eat Happy Kitchen and how she helps people eat clean without sacrificing flavor. She and Adam riff on microwave leftovers, reanimating steak the right way, and the pitfalls of modern nutrition misinformation. Anna talks about creating alternatives like low-carb chicken parm that actually taste great—and the mindset shift needed to eat well without falling into guilt or restriction. The segment blends humor and practicality, offering real tips for ditching diet dogma and enjoying food again. Specialists kept testing and prescribing medications with no real answer as to why this is happening. Nothing changed until Jen decided to read the back of a seemingly healthy food product and noticed she was consuming ingredients she couldn't even pronounce. This sent her on a Wake UP! Mission to find foods made with real ingredients she could recognize and pronounce. After years of research, she found every clean swap making her menu expand instead of the usual restriction and her health took a complete turn for the better. She started coaching family and friends – all of which saw better bloodwork results, physical and mental changes and word of mouth spread creating Jen to be a food coach. In 2019, Jen launched Wake Up and Read The Labels, a wellness company dedicated to helping consumers understand what's actually inside of their food and revolutionize their grocery shopping. But it didn't stop there - Jen launched The Label Letter, a weekly digital newsletter which includes anti- inflammatory recipes, clean food product swaps, dining out tips plus non- toxic essentials that are made with real ingredients embodying a true anti- inflammatory way of life that can help people feel their best.  Wake Up also has other digital products to help you find clean food swaps - product recommendation sheet, membership app, online course and cookbook. In this episode of Wake Up and Read the Labels, Jen Smiley exposes the seven real GMO crops and how food companies use misleading marketing to make their products seem healthier than they are. From non-GMO salt (which doesn't even exist!) to deceptive claims on bread, juice, and cereal, Jen reveals the food industry's tricks and how to truly avoid GMOs for better health.Plus, learn why autoimmune diseases and inflammation are skyrocketing, and how GMOs may be playing a role. If you're tired of being misled at the grocery store, this episode is a must-listen!  Key Takeaways:There are only seven GMO crops: Corn, soybean, canola, sugar beets, alfalfa, cotton, and potatoes—plus some papaya, pink pineapple, and summer squash.Non-GMO labels are often misleading: There's no such thing as non-GMO salt, wheat, oats, dairy, or oranges, but companies use this label to charge more.GMOs contribute to inflammation and autoimmune diseases: Many processed foods made from GMO corn, soy, and sugar beets can damage gut health and trigger immune responses. The government subsidizes unhealthy ingredients: Grains, seed oils, sugar, and dairy products are mass-produced because they're cheap, not because they're healthy. How to actually avoid GMOs: Buy organic, shop the perimeter of the store, and check ingredient lists—not just marketing claims.Use the Read the Labels app: Scan foods at the grocery store to instantly see if they contain sneaky inflammatory ingredients.

The true source of healing, the key to unlocking vibrant well-being, was not found in the fleeting promises of modern medicine, but in the timeless wisdom contained within the sacred texts. More often than not on this podcast, we have the privilege of listening to and learning from health, wellness, biohacking, longevity experts talk about the latest research, health hacks, books, projects, conferences, stories/anecdotes, clinical experience, etc. And there is so much to glean from those episodes and practical applications for your own wellness regimens. Today's episode with former NFL player, Landon Cohen, provides a very well-rounded conversation on health and wellness from a very unique perspective and from someone that was literally in the trenches as a pro football player. While Landon is a wildly successful entrepreneur today, which is a grind in its own right, his days as an NFL defensive lineman (and, of course, the years and year of collegiate and high school football) took a major toll on his body and, even more so, his mind and brain. This is secondary to the perpetual banging of pads and helmets every single play between the offensive and defensive lineman. Being drafted in 2008, Landon played in an era where the repercussions of concussions was not yet on the radar in football. Fast forward to early last year, Landon was recommended by a friend to try some BioBlue and red light therapy to see if it would help with his post-NFL body and mind. According to Landon, BioBlue played a major role in regaining his sharp mind and cognition/focus, while the red light therapy (combined with the BioBlue) helped reduce so lingering aches and pains. Needless to say, he is a massive advocate of both modalities. Along with discussing his experience with MB and RLT, Landon talks about the differences between his health and wellness mindset as an NFL player vs. his mindset in his post-NFL life, his desire and motivation to live a "clean lifestyle", how/why he wakes up around 3 every morning to start his day, his viewpoints on diet/food and some other fun topics, such as crypto, blockchain, AI and much, much more!If you found the information in today's episode with Landon Cohen particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. Tune in next week for the second part of this discussion diving into body image with a special guest! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:51] Exploring our relationship with food, body shape and being food aware [11:29] Food triggers, guilt-free eating, and the time spent thinking about food[16:28] Food restrictions, One Meal a Day (OMAD), fear food and a discussion on eating disorders[26:22] Judging ourselves for food choices and how we can redirect these feelings[27:40] What a balanced relationship with food looks like[33:20] Exercise, activity choices and wearablesKEY TAKEAWAYS: Many people recall becoming aware of their body size and food choices at a young age, often influenced by family, social environments, and cultural messaging. Restrictive eating patterns are deeply ingrained behaviors influenced by diet culture. These habits contribute to an unhealthy relationship with food, highlighting the importance of re-evaluating these mindsets for overall well-being.Food choices may be driven by fear, competition, or guilt. Instead of restricting, skipping meals, or yo-yo dieting, a balanced approach involves recognizing hunger and satiety, eating various nourishing foods, and honoring your body's needs without anxiety. A balanced lifestyle allows for flexibility—being able to eat at any restaurant without stress, working out without obsessing over steps or missing a day, and removing labels like "good" or "bad" from food choices. The key is self-awareness and making mindful choices rather than engaging in self-sabotage or comparison.QUOTES:         [9:44] “The first time I felt I had to watch what I ate was between high school and college. - Jenn Trepeck[14:11] “If we are choosing not to have social plans because we don't want to eat out, or we don't want to eat around other people, we are isolating. We want to look at our relationship to that. - Jenn Trepeck[15:40] “What we learn through the Healthy Vibe Tribe and what I learned that completely changed my life is that it's not actually about the calories. It's about what calories are made of.” -Jenn Trepeck.[2.0:06] “Are we eating to avoid something?” Jenn Trepeck[27:05] “What does a more balanced relationship, a healthier relationship with food, look like? It means eating in a way that nourishes your body and your mind. Guilt and anxiety are not present. It means recognizing hunger and satiety and fullness.” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramCr-Cr-Cr-CravingsDry Beyond January - Part OneDry Beyond January - Part Two
