In a culture obsessed with unrealistic beauty standards and quick fixes, disordered eating has become a silent struggle for many girls and women. As parents, how can we foster a Christ-centered perspective on body image and encourage our daughters to embrace their God-given worth? In this powerful episode of the Raising Godly Girls Podcast, American Heritage Girls Founder & Executive Director Patti Garibay welcomes Dr. Rhona Epstein, a licensed psychologist, addiction counselor, and author with over three decades of experience in helping individuals find freedom from disordered eating and food addiction. Dr. Rhona shares her personal journey of recovery and how it ignited her passion to help others heal. Together, Patti and Dr. Rhona dive into the realities of body image issues, discuss what disordered eating looks like in girls, and explore how moms can model healthy relationships with food and self-image. In this episode, Clara recounts her personal struggle with an eating disorder and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), a syndrome resulting from insufficient energy intake in athletes. Initially triggered by her perfectionist and over achieving tendencies, Clara struggled with an eating disorder starting in high school. Post college when she started running, she unknowingly developed RED-S symptoms, such as loss of her period, fatigue, irritability, gastrointestinal issues, and proneness to injury. Despite facing dismissive attitudes from several doctors, she finds a wake-up call in a body composition test revealing critically low body fat. Clara discusses the lifestyle changes she made to better manage her condition, which included setting reminders to eat regularly, sneaking in calories, and altering her mindset towards her performance in races. She also shares how managing RED-S has reshaped both her experience and love for running. This interview is the first of many around folks' stories with eating disorders that I will be releasing throughout the month of February. In honor of Eating Disorders Awareness Week at the end of February (2/26 - 3/3), and February being National Eating Disorders Awareness Month, I'm kicking off a series of stories about folks who have struggled with an eating disorder, starting with my own story. I've been saying I was going to share this on the podcast for almost a year now and have been procrastinating, partially because I didn't want to make an outline for it and partially because I'm scared to share it. I was inspired by Clara (next week's episode) sharing her story that I finally sat down and recorded my own. The more we normalize conversations around eating disorders, the more awareness there will be. This is a very personal and vulnerable episode for me, where I describe how my own eating disorder started in high school, how it related to running, and how it continued through college/grad school. Please take care if you find these topics hard to listen to or triggering in any way, as I do discuss weight loss, fear of food, body image, eating disorder behaviors. We're putting our critical thinking caps on for this episode of Candid Conversations! Social worker, graduate researcher and EDV Peer Mentoring Program Manager Rachael Duck joins Bree for an important conversation that will challenge listeners to think outside the box and look beyond an individual focus on health. Importantly, we invite you to think about the idea that eating disorders don't happen on their own, and that people's experiences are often tied to larger social and cultural forces. As Rachael likes to say, the personal is political! The release of this episode aligns with Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2023. As part of the theme 'The Time is Now to Take Action on Eating Disorders and Body Image', we are sharing lots of lived experience reflections, education resources and advocacy information on our socials. Make sure you're following us!

Here, they chat at the close of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and use the opportunity to reinforce the need to always ‘turn talk into action'. Throughout this episode, you'll hear a number of lived experience reflections about what it takes to keep pivoting from hinge behaviours, and to continually challenge the eating disorder's unhelpful voice. If you have a perspective on this chat, or would like to contribute to a future episode, please email debbie@wednesdayschild.co.uk In this episode, Debbie references her ‘Sofa Guest' conversation. Eating Disorders Awareness Week is underway and today's show is our commitment to supporting the incredible work being done to raise awareness on the impact disordered eating can have, both for our ADHD community and society as a whole. I'll just be upfront here, this episode does not focus entirely on ADHD and eating disorders. Instead, our team made the decision to look at how eating disorders impact our society as a whole and what's being done to improve how we diagnosis and treat eating disorders. It's estimated that 9% of the world's population has an eating disorder and it is also one of the deadliest mental illnesses, making Eating Disorders Awareness Week something we needed to support. Joining us on the show is registered dietician nutritionist Hilmar Wagner from The Emily Program, a nationally-recognized program focused on using personalized treatment plans to help patients find lifetime recovery from their eating disorders. Hilmar works with both patients and providers through his role at The Emily Program and we're diving into the big picture impact of eating disorders, what's changed over the years when it comes to diagnosing and treating eating disorders and also looking at the state of care for people seeking treatment for an eating disorder. (February 27-March 5, 2023) Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. It is estimated that 28 million Americans will experience an eating disorder during the course of their lifetime! But what is the difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating? Does one lead to the other? What do eating disorders and the people who suffer from them look like? With numbers so high, it is likely that you know people who are going through this but are you aware of what they are experiencing or is your "normal" looking friend actually dealing some with hidden issues? We talk about our personal experiences and relationships with food and eating and share some resources if you wish to learn more. Thanks for listening!

Trigger Warning: This special episode of This Is A Token is an open conversation between Alex and his daughter Connie about experiences of mental health, eating disorders and suicide. There are two weeks dedicated to raising awareness about eating disorders. Firstly, the National Eating Disorders Association's week is running from the 21st to 27th February - and the second by Beat Eating disorders is from 28th February to 6th March. "Both Connie and I have had our challenges with mental health, and we think of it as very normal so we talk openly about it. During Eating Disorder Awareness Week, Connie and I recorded an episode talking about our experiences. I have had to deal with anxiety myself, and we have a history of mental illness in our family. Eating disorders are complex with no one sole cause, but research has shown that individuals might be predisposed due to their genetic or biological make up. There has been a sharp increase in the number of young people experiencing mental health issues and eating disorders. Services are hugely underfunded. Although we may not have the solutions, Connie and I hope that by talking about our experiences, we can help raise awareness of some of the issues.”Did you know?- Approximately 1.25 million people in the UK have an eating disorder.- 1 in 5 females aged 16 to 24 has an eating disorder. - Around 25% of those affected by an eating disorder are male.- Research has shown that 20% of people living with anorexia will die prematurely from their condition. Ep. 14 This week is Eating Disorders Awareness Week, so I was absolutely thrilled that Dr Carolyn Plateau was able to join me on the podcast. Binge eating disorder will affect one in fifty of us in our lifetime, it is the most common but least understood. Eating Disorders Awareness Week begins on March 1st and runs to Sunday the 7th. For more on this Fran was joined by Psychotherapist and Eating Order Specialist, Fierna Kennedy....

I'm sharing my disordered eating story and recovery journey this week on Feed That Nation. This episode has been long in the making! It's taken me a long time to put words to my experience. So few people in my life know this story, but I'm not ashamed anymore. TRIGGER WARNINGS: Non-graphic descriptions of diet culture, body shaming, restrictive and obsessive eating behaviors, MyFitnessPal, weight loss, purging, and mental health/depression/anxiety. If you will be triggered by listening to my story, I want you to honor yourself and STOP watching this video! If you or someone you know are in immediate danger, please call 911 or contact your local emergency mental health services. I acknowledge that through all of my past and present struggles, I have always the privilege of a petite, white, healthy body and that fatphobia has never been something others have used to discriminate against me or invalidate me. People in fat bodies, people in non-white bodies, and people in disabled or chronically ill bodies often cannot say the same, and their stories are just as worthy of being heard and respected and empathized with as my own. -- Resources: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-8255, https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ NAMI: https://www.nami.org/About-Mental-Illness/Mental-Health-Conditions/Eating-Disorders/Support ANAD: https://anad.org/get-help/eating-disorders-helpline/ NEDA: https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/help-support/contact-helpline Eating Disorder Hope: https://www.eatingdisorderhope.com/recovery/self-help-tools-skills-tips My favorite IG creators around this topic**: @dietitiananna @happilyfed @tiffanyima @thenutritiontea @dylanmurphy.rd **Following people on social media is not equivalent to seeking out individualized professional help** -- Some of the links below may be affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I may receive a small commission if you click through and make a purchase. Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of any mental illness. In this episode Dr. Graham Taylor speaks with Laura Smolar, Senior Director of Programs at the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). Together they discuss the behavioral patterns that lead to an eating disorder, questions around what defines certain eating disorders, warning signs that could indicate an eating disorder, and the impact of social media and COVID on eating disorders. They also talk about crafting language so that you can approach someone in a way that’s helpful and nonjudgmental. If you're observing behaviors that have changed dramatically in somebody, even if it's their attitude around food or their feelings around being around you, those can be signs of concern and something to really look into and seek help for. Last week was Eating Disorders Awareness Week. In this episode, I'm giving a quick recap of my exciting experience of dancing at the Chicago Bulls game for the Chicago Luvabulls 40th Reunion, then we're covering something more serious. I want to give you a high-level view of eating disorders and disordered eating. Last week was National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and eating disorders still carry far too much stigma. If we can lessen the shame, we can help the healing process for those who struggle. I think it's important for everyone to understand: • The difference between eating disorders and disordered eating • Having awareness about any potentially destructive language that you might use • How to approach someone if you have concerns over suspicious eating habits • Why it's important to separate body size from any potential food issues • What disordered eating habits might look like RESOURCES: https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/eating-disorders.html https://www.recoveredliving.com Website: https://fitfizzstudio.com Connect on all social media: @FitFizz (Leave a comment about the show and I'm happy to follow back!)
