Welcome back to the HealED Podcast! I'm your host, Marie-Pier. Today we are talking about the role of family in eating disorder care. Joining me in this conversation is Bryn Miller, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Colorado, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor and a Certified Advanced Therapist in Emotion-Focused Family Therapy. In this episode, Bryn shares the story behind their framework, known as the response roadmap, and how it integrates elements of EFFT and her experience working with parents and caregivers. She delve into the first step of the framework, which involves recognizing and paying attention to our emotions. Bryn emphasizes the importance of prioritizing self-care for parents and caregivers in overcoming barriers when treating eating disorders. Bryn acknowledges the complexity of eating disorders and the multiple factors that contribute to them. She highlights the importance of empowering parents to find the approach that feels right for them, while respecting the individual's control over their treatment and involvement of others. Even if the individual doesn't want their family involved, working with parents or caregivers can still provide support and understanding. Encouraging reflection and repetition, Bryn shares intervention techniques to support families, such as therapeutic apology and EFFT interventions. She emphasizes the need for repair and reconnection if the lack of family involvement changes. Bryn stresses the importance of honouring both the person with the eating disorder and the parent or caregiver's experiences, finding a way for them to reconnect if possible and helpful. In our conversation with Bryn, we also explore the importance of self-care and refueling for parents and caregivers. Bryn shares how parenting, dealing with eating disorder treatment, and recovery can be incredibly challenging to balance. She addresses common triggers and factors that contribute to burnout, emphasizing the need to recalibrate our sense of success and failure to avoid feeling ineffective. Welcome to The HealED Podcast! I'm your host, Marie-Pier, and today we have an incredible guest joining us, Jasna Robinson-Wright, an amazing registered dietitian at The Balanced Practice. In this episode, we're diving deep into the intersections between health conditions, eating disorders, and navigating dietary restrictions without triggering disordered eating. Jasna and I discuss the dangers of jumping straight into the most restrictive route when addressing health issues. We challenge the common belief that cutting out dairy and gluten is necessary for various health conditions. We also explore the confusion and misinformation surrounding food and nutrition advice in the information age. With everyone feeling like experts on nutrition and readily giving advice without solid evidence, it's important to discern what's valid and what's not. Moreover, we delve into the pervasive influence of diet culture, wellness culture, and weight bias in society. Popular diets often receive media attention and hype, despite lacking proven effects. Believing that certain foods are "bad" can lead to guilt, shame, and potentially worsening health conditions or disordered eating. So, grab your favourite beverage, sit back, and get ready for an insightful and transformative discussion on healing, health, and intuitive eating. Let's dive right in! In this episode of The Balanced Dietitian Podcast, we talk about SUGAR and the stress we experience around food due to societal norms and our attachment of worth to certain foods. We challenge the concept of food/sugar addiction and review how to increase balance in our nutrition. I believe in a balanced and consistent approach to nutrition that focuses on adding rather than restricting. Here's whats covered in this episode: [00:00:05] Welcome to Balanced Dietitian Podcast where science and psychology combine to empower individuals with a better relationship with food and body for a better life. [00:03:31] Food can become tied to self-worth, leading to a hierarchical system with certain foods seen as "better" or "worse". Diet culture has now merged with wellness culture, with sugar demonized as the worst thing to consume. [00:06:57] Dieters may attach more worth to certain foods due to deprivation, leading to heightened emotional response and dopamine release. Importance of considering psychology and morality in relation to food. [00:11:19] Don't fear sugar, focus on health-promoting behaviors. View nutrition as addition, not restriction. Stress around food is worse than the food itself. [00:15:14] Assess your relationship with sugar and understand nutritional needs, especially for those with sensitivities. [00:18:49] Dopamine release not indicative of addiction; restriction triggers addiction behavior in rats. [00:23:46] Intuitive eating balances thoughts, emotions, and intuition with food. Anti-diet doesn't mean it's a free for all with food. It's still important to strive for balance and understand how food impacts our bodies. [00:24:44] Podcast host invites audience on instagram to share thoughts on sugar and debunk diet culture. Aims to promote a healthy relationship with food to improve lives. Conclusion: You can eat sugar. Sugar is NOT bad. Balance OVER restriction Everyday! Connect with Marie-Pier on Instagram: @The.Balanced.Dietitian

Hey everybody. Welcome back to the Balanced Dietician podcast. I've been feeling good the last few weeks! I always kind of forget how my mental health is impacted by winter until we get into spring again. Every spring I just feel like a different person. It's really interesting because most folks who do the healing journey, to have a better relationship with food and their body, will experience something similar. When you have a not-so-good relationship with food, we kind of know it's not great, but we don't realize how bad it actually is until you've healed. When we can look back and just realize how things used to be, we realize how far we've actually come; pretty cool, right? For most of us, our relationship with food wasn't always bad. It started to get tricky we were trying to manipulate food in order to change our body. Body image is often the source of our food relationship issues. So if we do the work to heal our relationship with food, but we don't do the body image work, it feels kind of like a bandaid solution; we're not doing the deep work that started the problem. IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS: The body positivity movement The body image spectrum: Body respect, Body trust, Body neutrality, Body appreciation, Body confidence, Body acceptance, Body liberation Ready to heal your relationship with food FOR GOOD? Welcome back to the Balanced Dietitian Podcast; The place where we talk about all things, food, body, mind, and the anti-diet. When I started to diet, I didn't know the consequences of dieting. I didn't know what would happen to my body, and to my mind. I didn't know, because I was not informed properly. I was told that dieting was gonna make all my dreams come true and that I was gonna feel so good, and that's not actually what happened. Do you know what actually happens to our bodies when you diet? Why does our body not like dieting? What can actually happen when you diet? I believe in body autonomy. We can all do what we're meant to do and what feels best for us, but I also believe in informed decisions. So today, I encourage you to get informed on the hidden costs of diets so that you can make the best decision for you. In this episode, we discuss: The PROBLEM and the SOLUTION that diet culture has created Diets were designed as a short term solution How diets affect our Hormones Other bodily changes brought on by diets Weight is the least important part of us BUT it is a part of diet culture you need to know about Ready to heal your relationship with food FOR GOOD? What thoughts do we have around food in our body as summertime is coming along? Wherever you are in your healing journey, I invite you to check in with yourself on how we are feeling about it and join me today for a a conversation about food psychology. Welcome to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I am so happy you are here with me this week. I am starting to feel a big shift in my energy now that winter is starting to come to a close. Back in November, I shared how much of a negative impact the winter months have on me as I am truly a summer person so the change in temperature is certainly welcome. I know that this time of year can be challenging for many of us because there's a lot of pressure to be bikini body ready. We know that in the summertime, it's very likely that more of our body's going to be exposed which can make us feel very vulnerable and push us to want to diet for the summertime. If you are feeling that way right now, you're not alone and this episode is for you. In this episode, we discuss: [02:48] Dealing with diet culture leading up to the summer months [06:11] The impact of wellness culture on eating disorders [07:30] Wellness culture and diet culture [12:05] Sneaky ways wellness culture shows up in everyday life Ready to heal your relationship with food FOR GOOD? Welcome to The Balanced Dietitian Podcast! I hope you are doing so wonderful. It is already mid-February. Last week I got to host another workshop on emotional eating. It was so good. I love to be able to teach about emotional eating because it really bridges my love of psychology and nutrition together. I feel this is a topic that has a lot of shame and guilt around it. One of the themes that came out a lot at the workshop that I wanted to bring on this podcast is the idea that if I know that emotional eating is not helping me why do I keep doing it? A lot of hopelessness starts to set in when we feel out of control and can not stop. In this episode, we discuss: [03:38] If we know something doesn't work for us, why do we continue doing it? [04:51] Food and emotions are deeply linked [07:28] Emotional eating is a often way we cope [09:32] Making peace with the fact that food has been our coping [12:02] The most impactful work you can do Ready to heal your relationship with food FOR GOOD?
