Today, we have a special in-person episode going back in time with our friend Joshua Weissman. This episode was actually recorded many moons ago, but after one of my computers died the files sadly went missing. Now years later, I was able to retrieve most of our conversation and finally edit this show together. Since the original recording of this episode, Joshua has gone on to become one of the most renowned chefs in the world, with incredible viral cooking videos and a couple bestselling cookbooks to his name. If you'd like to follow Joshua (and you'd be crazy not to), find him on the socials by looking for Joshua Weissman or by visiting joshuaweissman.com. If you'd like to get free recipes, and stay up to date about our next in-person events, masterminds and live shows in Austin and beyond, sign up for my newsletter below or at AbelJames.com. On this special episode, you'll hear: Why Joshua turned down an offer to star on a reality show Joshua's secrets to making the perfect old-school sourdough Why pro cooks don't even need to taste their food Why a good white wine should leave a little bit of tingle on the tongue And much more… Quick note: the original high quality audio from the microphones went missing when the computer died, and this audio is from the video camera itself, so apologies if the audio sounds less pro than usual. I hope you enjoy this raw in-person conversation with the one-and-only Joshua Weissman. In this special episode, Abel James reconnects with renowned chef Joshua Weissman in a conversation that was recorded years ago but only recently recovered. Joshua shares his journey from turning down reality TV offers to becoming a viral sensation with his cooking videos and best-selling cookbooks. The discussion delves into the art of cooking, exploring why professional chefs don't need to taste their food, the secrets to perfect sourdough, and the importance of caring about the food you prepare. Joshua emphasizes the significance of cooking as a fundamental human experience, encouraging listeners to embrace the simplicity and therapeutic nature of preparing meals. The episode also touches on broader themes such as the impact of reality TV on personal branding, the evolution of special effects in movies, and the societal shift away from cooking. Joshua and Abel discuss the cultural and emotional connections to food, the importance of maintaining traditional cooking practices, and the joy of sharing homemade meals with others. They explore the idea that cooking is not just about sustenance but a way to connect with others and find meaning in everyday life.

What's better for longevity—running or walking? It's a bit of a trick question. But if there is one answer, it's definitely walking. If you want to be fit and live for a long time, you don't need to subject yourself to suffer fests and slog through long runs.In fact, when you combine daily walks with the habit of sprinting just about once a week, magic starts to happen. How can we transcend the hype, nonsense and noise? Today, I'm honored to be here with the one and only Paul Chek. For over 40 years, Paul has been a pioneer in the world of corrective exercise, kinesiology, and holistic health. But his wisdom extends far beyond the physical, as he shares profound insights on the spiritual and existential dimensions of the human experience. This is no ordinary conversation about health and longevity - it's a masterclass in living an authentic, fulfilling life. In this episode with Paul Chek, you'll hear: The dangers of taking shortcuts with your health and joining the biohacking cult How to build the courage to be yourself in a world that conditions you to fit in How our spiritual practice can help optimize our health and longevity Why instead of eating cake on his birthday, Paul stacks enormous rocks to create a monument of stone… And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/paul-chek-how-to-optimize-performance-and-longevity-without-biohacks/ Go to https://paulchek.com/ to claim your free 3-week trial to Spirit Gym with Paul Chek, and to browse Paul's books, podcasts, blogs and more Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/ Listen and support the show on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/6ZBhFATsjzIJ3QVofgOH Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus

Do you feel a constant pressure to optimize every aspect of your life? What if hyper-optimization protocols actually do more harm than good? The glorification of hustle culture has given many of us the nagging feeling that no matter how much we do or accomplish, it's never quite enough. Living in a cloud of frantic, urgent, reactive energy can even cause us to lose sight of who we are and why we're working so hard. If you want to reclaim your time, energy and purpose in life, you need to rebel against cultural norms and conditioning that does not serve you. You'll be in good company. Studies have shown that no matter their field or area of expertise, peak performers share a unique characteristic: they take time for complete rest and recovery. So when was the last time you created space for rest, or experienced the unexpected joys of under-committing and doing nothing for a minute? If your identity is in any way defined by over-achievement, hyper-optimization, perfectionism, or an obsession with productivity, this episode is for you. And listen, I may be behind the microphone, but I'm just as guilty of all of this tomfoolery as the rest of you! Today, we're here with Israa Nasir, a New York City-based psychotherapist, author, and the founder of WellGuide—a digital community for mental health awareness. Israa's new book, "Toxic Productivity" is strong medicine for anyone who's ever felt the pressure to be constantly busy, constantly achieving, and constantly proving their worth. In this episode with Israa, you'll hear: Why hyper-optimization protocols often do more harm than good Why chasing and achieving the next big win can eventually lead to feeling more empty and disconnected than ever before How to break free from the constant pressure to achieve and optimize every aspect of your life How to build meaningful relationships in a hyperconnected but lonely worldAnd much more… One quick note. Israa recorded this from a hotel room in the middle of her book tour, and her wifi connection was low-quality and dropped a few times, so we did our best to cobble it back together. Apologies in advance for any audio or video issues. As a recovering perfectionist myself, perhaps releasing an imperfect show is indeed part of the recovery process. :) Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/israa-nasir-why-hyper-optimization-protocols-do-more-harm-than-good/ Go to https://www.israanasir.com/ to get Israa Nasir's new book, "Toxic Productivity" Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/ Listen and support the show on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/6ZBhFATsjzIJ3QVofgOH Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus Brought to you by: Prime Protein from EquipFoods.com - Save 15% off your first order or 30% off your subscription with code ABELJAMES Juvent Micro-Impact Platform from Juvent.com - Save $500 off your purchase with code WILD

Israa's new book, "Toxic Productivity" is strong medicine for anyone who's ever felt the pressure to be constantly busy, constantly achieving, and constantly proving their worth.  In this episode with Israa, you'll hear: Why hyper-optimization protocols often do more harm than good Why chasing and achieving the next big win can eventually lead to feeling more empty and disconnected than ever before How to break free from the constant pressure to achieve and optimize every aspect of your life How to build meaningful relationships in a hyperconnected but lonely world And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/israa-nasir-why-hyper-optimization-protocols-do-more-harm-than-good/ Go to https://www.israanasir.com/ to get Israa Nasir's new book, "Toxic Productivity" Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/  Listen and support the show on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/6ZBhFATsjzIJ3QVofgOH  Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman  Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman  Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames  Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus

Matt Beaudreau: How to Nurture Genius and Courage in a Habitually Compliant Population

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2024 75:18

What's the difference between education and indoctrination? Is our education system broken, or is it operating as intended? The public school conveyor belt is a relic of the Prussian military model, designed to produce compliant workers for factories rather than sovereign thinkers with upward mobility. We're left with a blindly obedient population that's smart enough to follow orders, but not smart or courageous enough to question the status quo.   The masses are conditioned to become habitually compliant conformists forever reliant on external authority. As Seth Godin writes, “To efficiently run a school, amplify fear (and destroy passion).” These days, educators have limited intellectual freedom to teach what they want to teach.  In past decades, we had far less access to information or schooling, yet were far more educated. Now in the age of AI, we have access to unlimited information, but we don't know if any of it is real or true.  So what is the future of education? Our guest today is Matt Beaudreau, a former public school educator and administrator who has dedicated his career to rethinking the very foundations of our education system. Matt shares: “When I saw this system for what it was, I could no longer be a part of perpetuating it.” As founder of the Apogee Strong mentorship program, Matt has an unwavering commitment to empowering young people to become sovereign, self-directed learners - a radical departure from the compliance-driven model that dominates our schools. True education should foster creativity and critical thinking, allowing individuals to pursue their unique passions. Matt's belief, which I share, is that genius is common, and true learning is about unlocking the innate genius in every one of us. In this episode, you'll discover: How to unshackle your mind from the limits of traditional schooling and cultural conditioning  Why modern education systems are anti-entrepreneurial and train students to be employees rather than innovators How to utilize passion as a vehicle to learn how to learn How to cultivate courage, foster civil discourse and intellectual flexibility to counter the polarization and echo chambers in today's society The status games played by elite institutions And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/matt-beaudreau-how-to-nurture-genius-and-courage-in-a-habitually-compliant-population/  Go to https://apogeestrong.com/ to enroll, watch the Documentary, and get more from Matt Beaudreau and the Apogee Strong team Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/  Listen and support the show on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/6ZBhFATsjzIJ3QVofgOH   Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman   Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman   Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames   Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus

Is your work aligned with your true calling in life? Or are you being paid to overlook your overwhelming disinterest in the work? Is your work-life driven by an illusion where the trivial is disguised as important? Tragically, this week's guest admits, “I spent 10 years doing an enormous amount of work but feeling as if I created nothing of substance.” Most of us know the feeling, but it doesn't have to be this way. In other words, work doesn't have to suck. Today, I'm thrilled to have my good friend and fellow Austinite, Paul Millerd joining us on the show. Paul is a fellow former corporate consultant who has spent the past 7 years blazing an unconventional trail, leaving the rat race behind to pursue a life of creativity, curiosity, and freedom as an independent author and creator. If you're looking to reclaim your inner ambition, as Paul writes: “The only true and worthwhile edge is deeply caring about what you do.”  The real journey isn't in indulging our desire to escape work, but in finding meaningful work that is true to our mission and purpose here on earth. In this conversation, Paul shares the raw, unfiltered story of his journey - from the uncertainty and loneliness of leaving a successful consulting career, to the unexpected joys and challenges of building a life around his curiosity and passions. We'll dive into the frameworks he's developed for discerning "good work" from "bad work," and how he's navigated the ebb and flow of creative entrepreneurship, including the decision to turn down a lucrative publishing deal. Whether you're feeling trapped in a soul-sucking job, or simply curious about what's possible when you break free of societal scripts, you're going to find an abundance of wisdom and inspiration in Paul's story. In this episode, you'll discover: Paul's framework for differentiating between "good work," "good enough work," and "bad work," and how you can apply this to your life How to find a balance between creative work and financial stability How to break free of your attachment to social status, material possessions, and your identity as an “achiever” Sage advice for those who are considering leaving the traditional corporate world to pursue their passions and creative interests How to coexist with your doubts and fears and feelings of uncertainty (instead of numbing or running away from them) How to reclaim your ambition to pursue YOUR good work And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/paul-millerd-why-he-blew-up-his-life-and-you-should-too/  Go to https://pmillerd.com/goodwork/ to get Paul Millerd's brand new book “Good Work: Reclaiming Your Inner Ambition.” Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/  Listen and support the show on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/6ZBhFATsjzIJ3QVofgOH  Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman  Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman  Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames  Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus

What does the concept of longevity mean to you? Perhaps some of us will sign up to be a brain in a jar? Or can we cruise into our second century by living a simple life of self-reflection, meditating deep in the mountains? Afterall, in remote corners of the world, there are legends of yogis and spiritual masters living so long that their true age is forgotten to time. Have you heard that eating animal protein causes cancer? Or that you'll save the world if you only give up hamburgers forever?  Despite dutifully reducing our consumption of animal protein for decades, rates of obesity and chronic disease have skyrocketed.   In the face of relentless anti-meat propaganda, what if the blanket advice to follow strict plant-based diets is actually accelerating rates of obesity and disease?  When I gave up meat as a young athlete for the sake of health and the environment, my results were abysmal. I lost muscle, gained fat, lacked energy, recovered poorly, and my race performance suffered.  Since plant-based fake meats and meat substitutes are incomplete proteins that are not well absorbed or utilized by our bodies, avoiding high-quality animal protein can lead to poor outcomes in health and performance for children and adults alike.  Meatless Mondays may sound virtuous, but they're not saving the environment or solving the obesity epidemic as many are led to believe.  Indiscriminately blaming cattle for the sins of fossil fuels and industrial agriculture is a mistake. We all want to save the world, but as this week's guest quips: “we can't eat our way out of a climate crisis.”  Whether you're raising animals or growing crops, industrial agriculture isn't friendly to the environment or our health. Prioritizing the health of your body and the planet requires that we source real food according to the laws of nature, prioritizing regenerative agriculture and pasture-raised animals over the products of concentrated feedlots and industrial monocrops. When it comes to health and performance, eating high-quality protein from healthy animals is one of the most powerful weapons we have to fight obesity, muscle wasting, and premature aging.  Today we're back with our friend Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, a New York Times Bestselling author, podcaster and functional medicine physician specializing in the concept of muscle-centric medicine, which focuses on the largest organ in the body, skeletal muscle, as the key to health and longevity. In this episode with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, you'll discover: Why what we think of as aging is actually a disease of impaired muscle The surprising relationship between meat, protein, and cancer How society's focus on weight loss has led to neglect of muscle building, which is critical for overall health The most effective exercises and training frequency to build skeletal muscle, optimize metabolism, and fight aging And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/gabrielle-lyon-why-meat-eating-and-strength-training-are-key-to-longevity/  Grab Dr. Gabrielle Lyon's new book “Forever Strong”: https://drgabriellelyon.com/forever-strong/ Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/  Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman  Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames  Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman  Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus

If you're not happy all the time, do you feel like you have a problem? No matter how much you achieve, does it feel like it's never quite enough?  This is totally normal.  There's nothing inherently wrong with the pursuit of happiness, but it's critical to understand that even in the best case scenario, happiness is fleeting. It's not something we ever get to keep.  We're conditioned to think that if we don't feel happy, we're failing at life. The traditional approach to addressing unhappiness is flawed, however, as it assumes we're meant to live in some perfect state of perpetual bliss. But that doesn't jive with biology or reality.  The truth is that our mammalian brains are wired for survival, not to feel happy all the time.  Feelings of happiness and achievement are short-lived, and it's meant to be that way.  But by harnessing proven principles of brain science and evolutionary biology, you can use dissatisfaction, pain and discomfort to propel you to your next epic success.  Today we're back with our friend, Loretta Breuning, PhD, author, Professor Emerita of Management at California State University, East Bay, and Founder of the Inner Mammal Institute. In this episode, you'll discover: Why our brain's happy chemicals are only released in short spurts, and quickly habituate to rewards How to untangle your emotional wiring by tracking down patterns from childhood Why our natural "herd impulse" can lead to groupthink and the suppression of individuality (and how to counteract it) Simple strategies to manage anxiety and fear How to spark small joys and harness dopamine triggers in the brain's reward system to create meaning and purpose in your life And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/loretta-breuning-why-youre-not-happy-and-what-to-do-about-it/  Get Loretta Breuning's latest book, “Why You're Unhappy: Biology vs Politics”: https://innermammalinstitute.org/why/  Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/  Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman  Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman  Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames  And click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus
