Sweating it Out: The Shocking Conditioning Secrets of 1923 FootballWe often think of football conditioning as a precise science of hydration, nutrition, and tailored strength programs. But a century ago, the rules of getting in shape were dramatically different. Darin Hayes of Pigskin Dispatch recently dove into the past with Timothy Brown of Football Archaeology to explore an article from the 1923 season, revealing the bizarre, and sometimes dangerous, training philosophies that shaped early gridiron stars. The episode stems from one of Tim's Tidbits titled: How Conditioning took place in 1923.The primary source for this peek into the past is the Wilson Athletic Library, a series of publications giving professional advice for the era. The specific guidance on "conditioning" came from two knowledgeable figures: Potsy Clark, a coach at Kansas (and a future NFL head coach), and John Griffith, the influential commissioner of the Big Ten. Their shared philosophy was heavily rooted in tradition and what they believed to be common sense, even when it defied basic human physiology. The Dangerous Doctrine of "Water Discipline"The most striking, and arguably most harmful, advice given was the strict adherence to water discipline: explicitly telling athletes not to drink water close to or during practice. This widespread but dangerous belief held that withholding water would make players tougher, similar to the old notion of not swimming after eating. As Timothy Brown points out, this practice put players in significant danger, especially when combined with the gear of the era. Everything worn was cotton, wool, or leather—heavy, non-wicking fabrics that made it impossible for players to perspire properly and cool down. Depriving yourself of water while wearing gear that traps heat only compounded the risk of heat-related illness. The Summer Slump PhilosophyThe coaches of 1923 also held a remarkably casual attitude toward summer training. Conditioning, in their minds, wasn't something players needed a formal program for. Instead, the ideal preparation was for athletes to be "farm boys" or to engage in "good outdoor labor" like construction, dock work, or lifeguarding. Any kind of heavy, physical work outside was deemed superior to formalized pre-season training, because that, as Brown notes, is what "training camp was for."Training camp itself was the six-week period designed to get the players in shape. This philosophy was exemplified by the tales of players like Red Grange, who gained legendary strength hauling massive blocks of ice, earning him the nickname "Wheat and Iceman."The Art of Avoiding "Staleness"Clark and Griffith's advice also focused on the non-physical elements of team administration, especially avoiding the dreaded state of "staleness." They believed a coach must walk a delicate balance: working the athletes hard, but not overworking them. If a player was "stale," it was considered the worst thing that could happen to their performance. The key barometer for a coach to know if they had pushed the team too far? Player complaints. While lazy players would complain regardless, a coach knew they had crossed the line when even the hard-working, dedicated athletes started voicing their displeasure. The contrast between the rudimentary, sometimes dangerous, conditioning of 1923 and the hyper-scientific training of today is a fascinating look at how far the gridiron has evolved. It proves that even a century ago, coaches were desperate to find that competitive edge, even if they were wrong about the most fundamental elements of human survival.Join us at the

A Trump administration push to reduce the frequency of corporate earnings reports risks hurting the accuracy of artificial intelligence-fueled models used by analysts, an accounting adviser said. Chief financial officers and other C-suite leaders would in turn need to address greater reputational risk if a plan to give public companies the option to file financial reports semiannually instead of quarterly advances, according to Steve Soter, vice president and industry principal at financial compliance platform Workiva. Companies prepare and submit quarterly reports, called Form 10-Qs, to the Securities and Exchange Commission's filing system in XBRL format, which makes the information more easily accessible and computer-readable, Soter said. Analysts' models consume this data to provide analysis and observations. Depriving investors and analysts' AI models of this information increases the risk of erroneous analysis and ensuing reputational damage, Soter said. On this episode of Talking Tax, Bloomberg Tax financial accounting reporter Jorja Siemons spoke with Soter about what steps C-suite leaders can take to mitigate data risks if the SEC reporting schedule shifts. Insight of the Week

Parashat Yitro recounts one of the most pivotal events, if not the most pivotal event, in Jewish history—the giving of the Torah at Har Sinai. The Midrash famously teaches that before giving the Torah to Beneh Yisrael, Hashem first offered it to the other nations. He approached the descendants of Esav, who inquired about its contents. When Hashem told them that the Torah includes the command, "Lo Tirsah"—"You shall not murder," they declined, as violence was ingrained in their way of life. Next, Hashem turned to Yishmael's descendants. Upon hearing that the Torah forbids theft—"Lo Tignob"—they, too, rejected it, unable to commit to such a moral standard, refraining from theft. Hashem then went to Amon and Moav. When they asked what the Torah commanded, Hashem told them, "Lo Tinaf"—"You shall not commit adultery." They, too, refused, unwilling to accept such a limitation, as they were accustomed to engaging freely in illicit relationships. Hashem then offered the Torah to Beneh Yisrael, who unlike the other nations, accepted the Torah unconditionally, without asking any questions. The Midrash's account requires explanation. The prohibitions of murder, theft, and adultery are not unique to the Torah. They are already included in the Sheva Misvot Beneh Noach – the seven "Noachide Laws," universal commandments given to all of humanity. Whether or not Esav, Yishmael, Amon, and Moav accepted the Torah, they were still bound by these prohibitions. If so, why does it matter that they rejected the Torah? The answer lies in the profound difference between observing these basic moral prohibitions and fully embracing the Torah's rigorous ethical and spiritual expectations. The command of "Lo Tirsah" does not only prohibit taking a life. It also forbids embarrassing someone in public, which is akin to murder. It means we must not "kill" our time by engaging in wasteful, vain activities. It even extends to preserving objects of value and not destroying them unnecessarily, because destruction is, in a sense, a form of "killing." Similarly, "Lo Tignob" is not just about theft of money or possessions. Wasting another person's time is a form of theft. Depriving someone of sleep by making noise at night is also stealing. Even redistributing wealth unjustly—such as in the story of Robin Hood, or in the style of communism—constitutes a violation of this prohibition in Torah law. Finally, "Lo Tinaf" likewise extends beyond the specific prohibition against forbidden intimate relationships. The Torah demands a higher level of modesty (Seniut), governing the way we dress, the way we speak, and even what we choose to see or expose ourselves to. This is what distinguished Beneh Yisrael from the other nations. Even if the other nations were willing to abide by basic moral codes, they would never commit to the all-encompassing ethical and spiritual framework that the Torah demands. Beneh Yisrael, however, accepted these lofty expectations without hesitation, embracing not just the specific prohibitions, but the especially high standards of sanctity and self-discipline that Torah life requires. As the Jewish people, we are held to a higher standard. Accepting the Torah means committing ourselves to a life of holiness and moral refinement. This is both a privilege and a responsibility. As Hashem's beloved nation, we must always remember that our actions reflect the divine mission entrusted to us. Whether in business, in speech, in dress, or in our treatment of others, we must uphold the elevated standards of Am Yisrael – and feel honored and privileged to conduct ourselves in a special manner befitting Hashem's beloved people.

When I say the word frugal, what comes to mind?Do you think of your penny-pitching sibling? Or your coupon-clipping aunt? Your co-worker that always brings their lunch? The reality is, frugal means something different to everyone.Frugality is a spectrum, and I believe it can be extremely beneficial to live your 20s with a healthy amount of frugality. Split rent with roommates. Shop at value-based stores. Avoid overspending on luxuries like new cars or fancy clothes. Winning these battles early on can pay dividends, literally and metaphorically, down the road. But frugality can go too far. Your 20s aren't the time to deprive yourself of everything at the expense of saving money. So how do we find that balance? What are some signals that we've gone too far? And what can we be doing now so we don't have to worry about frugality so much in the future?Joel Larsgaard, Co-Host of How to Money, will be answering those questions today. Joel is a recovering frugalite. After experiencing his parents going bankrupt when he was 12, he vowed not to let money impact him in the same way. In his 20s, he worked two jobs, used his bike as a primary source of transportation, and scoured the internet for the best deals. As Joel entered his 30s, he realized he might have taken frugality a little too far. At times, being frugal tested his relationship with his wife and had him make short-sided decisions that might be considered cheap versus frugal. Joel will admit that he doesn't have it all figured out now but I can tell he's found a much healthier balance today. He still loves riding his bike but works less and isn't afraid to spend money on quality items he loves.I enjoyed my conversation with Joel because I can see myself following in his footsteps. I can often get lost in the bigger picture of financial independence. FI is not a number but instead, the flexibility to reimagine what life could look like.So if you're ready to experience what life could look like, let's get into it. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the craft beer lover and co-host of How to Money…Joel Larsgaard.Key Takeaways:A case for frugality: frugality gives you optionsDefining frugal (and when frugal becomes cheap)Frugal strategies for saving lots of money in your 20sThe diminishing returns of frugalityFrugality isn't the only tool to use in order to reach FIFinding balance by identifying your craft beer equivalentMentions:HTM Money Mission Statement: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IhrgSguUq7A3-5OoqF8-0XaX65M2ixyc/viewMore of Joel:Website: https://www.howtomoney.com/More of The Struggle is Real:Find show notes and more at https://www.tsirpodcast.com/Follow us on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/tsirpod/

This is a tough time of year! The space between Thanksgiving and Christmas, where everything seems like it's geared towards indulgent eating, can feel like a month-long binge. Additionally with the new year on the way, it can also start to feel just as hopeful as it is hopeless, when you might be choosing between depriving yourself completely or letting yourself off the hook. In this episode, I want to touch on how this is a crucial season in changing your mindset and setting yourself up for success for the next 4 quarters to come. Listen to this episode to hear more on:• The “grief panic” that sets in and why it's unproductive to say goodbye to foods you enjoy.• You're not the problem, the plan you have set for the new year is the problem. • Mindset shifts with how you feel about eating, and deciding what kind of headspace you want to go into holidays with.• Depriving yourself vs. indulging in everything over Christmas.• The last quarter, not the first, sets the tone for the rest of the year. It's hard to work towards your goals when it feels like that ship has already sailed and it's even more difficult to get things under control when you feel like you already blew it, so don't overcomplicate things and meet yourself where you are currently! In the meantime, keep trying, keep tracking, don't be intimidated and don't give up. You've totally got this!Stop struggling. The news was first reported by the “Pro-Woman, Pro-Child Safeguarding, Anti-Bullsh*t,” media outlet Reduxx. According to the outlet, Twitter contacted the two women — Jasmine Sussex and Leah Whiston — on May 16, notifying them that they had violated Australian law in several of their tweets. The platform told the two that a “government entity or law enforcement agency” had informed them of their alleged crime, and that the platform had been forced to hide the content from Australian users. The posts in question had been critical of Jennifer Buckley, a female-identified male. Buckley had previously announced online that, after two years of transitioning, he had induced lactation and had begun breastfeeding his newborn son, who his wife had given birth to. Sussex was heavily critical of this, telling the U.K.’s Daily Mail that “men shouldn’t breastfeed because breastfeeding [is] for the baby,” and that “there is no evidence that any male-induced milk is equivalent to mother’s milk.” “We have no idea if the substance is even milk. It’s absolutely a human experiment on babies,” she told the outlet. As a volunteer breastfeeding counselor, Sussex was reportedly fired from her job in 2021 for failing to comply with the adoption of “gender neutral” language in breastfeeding care — a claim which the ABA denied to the Daily Mail. A year after, she was removed from the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA), Reduxx reported. “I was sacked for. … ‘Engaging in Sectarian Controversy’ in breach of the ABA constitution,” she told Reduxx. “In other words, continuing to talk about the dangers of gender identity ideology for mothers and babies, including how men were forcing their way into the breastfeeding relationship by attempting to induce lactation.” Whiston, meanwhile, is the representative for the Standing for Women Queensland (SFWQ) page. She had posted a Twitter thread on the page, revealing that an LGBT lobby group had allegedly given the ABA $20,000 for them to create an educational booklet about “chest feeding.” https://www.dailysignal.com/2023/05/22/exclusive-leaked-policy-exposes-fox-news-stances-on-woke-ideology/?fbclid=IwAR36KJiUko85jY6nRrQSX4DH2XOZAwUdyaTl-iEhQIfZe9w-ZPnsTY3cAnA Leaked Policy Exposes Fox News Stances on Woke Ideology Fox News employees are allowed to use bathrooms that align with their gender identity, rather than their biological sex, and permitted to dress in alignment with their preferred gender. They must also be addressed by their preferred name and pronouns in the workplace. These are just a few of the policies outlined in the company handbook, dated January 2021, a copy of which was shared with The Daily Signal. Fox also offers to help employees come up with a “Workplace Transition Plan” to ease their gender transition at work. The revelations comes amid conservative consternation at Fox Digital’s use of activist language like “gender affirming care” in stories on its website, as well as the site’s consistent use of female pronouns for biological males like TikTok celebrity Dylan Mulvaney and swimmer Lia Thomas (formerly known as Will Thomas). Fox also drew strong backlash for a June 2022 on-air segment praising a child’s gender transition as an “inspiration to others.” That segment briefly depicted California state Sen. Scott Weiner, a far-left Democrat who led the move to soften sex offender registry requirements for sodomy with minors, and highlighted the activist claim that a child might commit suicide if he or she is not permitted to transition. Carlson’s show was canceled April 24, days after he delivered a viral speech at The Heritage Foundation’s 50th anniversary gala. Fox News Media has not given a reason, simply stating that the two parties “agreed to part ways.” A source who still works at Fox News told The Daily Signal that after Carlson’s show was canceled in April, producers for the new 8 p.m. “Fox News Tonight” program were told not to bash Mulvaney. That directive came from high-level executives, the source said. Fox News did not respond to The Daily Signal’s multiple requests for comment. Under the category “Gender Transition,” Fox’s employee handbook promises that the company is dedicated to “expanding and strengthening” efforts to “sustain a more inclusive work environment.” The Fox employee handbook is posted on Workday, where employees can see company guidelines or policies, a former employee told The Daily Signal. “Employees who are transitioning their gender have the right to be open about their transition if they so choose, and to work in an environment free of harassment, discrimination, or retaliation, and without fear of consequences or transphobia for living openly,” the policy says. Citing the Human Rights Campaign, one of the most prominent LGBTQ organization in the country, the Fox handbook defines a slew of LGBTQ terms, including cisgender, gender expression, gender-fluid, gender identity, gender non-conforming, gender transition, LGBTQ, non-binary, and transgender. For the past several years, Fox received a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, “the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality.” A former Fox News employee told The Daily Signal that the company frequently mentions this perfect score in employee training materials. “Fox News devotes hours of programming to attacking ‘woke companies,’ but ironically Fox is as woke as the rest of them,” another former Fox News employee told The Daily Signal, emphasizing that Fox viewers would be “astonished to find out what the company is like.” Fox’s policies appear to be aligned with the legal requirements in New York City, where the company is headquartered, as well as California, where a large number of its employees work. The handbook explicitly states that any employee “may access the restroom corresponding to their gender identity.” “If a transitioning employee expresses a desire for increased privacy they will be provided access to a single occupancy restroom where available,” the handbook says. “However, no employee shall be required to use a single occupancy restroom if they do not wish to do so.” When trans-identifying TikTok star Mulvaney was first gaining prominence last year, producers for “Tucker Carlson Tonight” had to fight to be able to refer to Mulvaney with male pronouns in the show’s chyrons, the former “Tucker Carlson Tonight” producer told The Daily Signal. Carlson’s team also fought to be able to host The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh on trans issues, the producer said, but the team was repeatedly met with resistance from Fox on this due to Walsh’s frank condemnation of transgender ideology. This may have also been due in part to Fox’s view of The Daily Wire as a competitor, the former producer suggested. https://www.based-politics.com/2023/05/22/this-public-college-is-giving-out-paid-internships-that-openly-exclude-white-people/ This public college is giving out paid internships that openly exclude white people Martin Luther King Jr. famously dreamed of a day when Americans would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Well, keep dreaming, MLK, because segregation and open race discrimination are making a comeback—this time, in progressive bastions like our higher education system and in the name of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” The University of Minnesota just got hit with a federal civil rights complaint because it’s openly conditioning a paid internship program on the basis of race. Their “Multicultural Summer Research Opportunities Program” is “an intensive 10 week summer program in which undergraduate students of color work full-time with a faculty mentor on a research project.” It aims to help in “preparing students for graduate school and developing research skills,” and pays students a $6,000 stipend. A condition of the program is that it is only open to students who “identify” as “a student of color or Native American.” This program’s legality is being challenged by the Legal Insurrection Foundation’s Equal Protection Project (EPP), which “seeks to ensure equal protection under the law and non-discrimination by the government” and “opposes racial discrimination in any form.” They just filed a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education arguing that this internship program violates the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution. “The U. Minnesota segregated summer program is inexcusable, and it’s shocking that a major university would so openly make educational opportunities open only to students of a certain skin color,” EPP President Bill told Fox News Digital. “There is no good form of racial discrimination. Depriving white students of educational opportunities does not promote racial or any other form of justice.” https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2023/05/21/census-new-york-city-loses-nearly-half-a-million-residents-in-two-years/ New York City Loses Nearly Half a Million Residents in Two Years New York City has lost nearly half a million residents over the course of just two years, newly released United States Census Bureau data reveals. The Census Bureau data, which shows population estimates for mid-2022, finds that fewer than 8.4 million residents remain living in New York City — still making the Big Apple the nation’s most populous city by several million. In April 2020, the very start of the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, more than 8.8 million residents lived in New York City. This figure indicates a population loss of more than five percent from April 2020 to July 2022 with almost half a million residents leaving the city. Americans moving out of deep blue cities is widespread, the Census Bureau data shows. The second largest city, Los Angeles, California, and the third largest city, Chicago, Illinois, also lost residents over the course of two years. In Los Angeles, for instance, about 3.8 million residents remain in the city as of July 2022 compared to about 3.9 million residents in April 2020, a loss of about 100,000 residents. Similarly, Chicago had about 2.67 million residents as of July 2022 but in April 2020, the city had about three percent more residents. Over the two years, about 85,000 residents left Chicago. “The U.
