While there are many ways Intuitive Eating and the Bible DO align in thought, there is a big way they don't. Today we are discussing self denial and why the Bible instructs us to actually sometimes ignore our body cues. Luke 9:23 says, “And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” I pray this episode helps you see the wisdom in making the Bible your true food authority and not the Intuitive Eating book! We chat today about: Why God included instructions about food for Christians to follow The power of practicing self denial (sleep or food) What the Bible and the apostle Paul have to say about sometimes saying no to what our flesh desires (like in fasting) Why it's important to not always give your flesh what it wants (the benefits) How fasting helps you say no to other things The results of having a lifestyle like Jesus did (including self denial Things to do when on a fast to make it effective (sharing some of my experience) How practicing self denial can help you with OCD thoughts with exercise or food How self denial makes you healthy and supernaturally strong! In this episode, Nate Claiborne and Benjamin Kandt discuss the spiritual practice of fasting, particularly in the context of Lent. They explore the historical and biblical foundations of fasting, explaining how it has traditionally been used as a means of self-denial, preparation, and spiritual discipline. They highlight the connection between fasting and feasting, emphasizing that both are essential parts of Christian life—fasting representing a time of longing and dependence on God, while feasting celebrates the joy and fulfillment found in Him. The conversation also touches on how the Christian calendar has shaped seasons of fasting, particularly leading up to Easter, and how fasting helps Christians resist being controlled by their physical cravings or desires. They also discuss the importance of motivation in fasting, warning against legalism while encouraging listeners to engage in the practice as a way to grow in spiritual freedom. They offer practical suggestions for fasting during Lent, including food-based fasts, social media detoxes, or other forms of self-denial that create space for increased dependence on God. Ultimately, they encourage listeners to approach fasting not just as an act of giving something up but as an opportunity to take hold of more of God and deepen their faith. You can listen to the sermon by Hardy Reynolds here, and last year's sermon from Ben here.

Biblical Fasting (Jim Murrell)
Throughout the Old Testament, we find holy men and women who committed themselves to the work of prayer and fasting. People like Moses, King David, Ahab, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, and the Jewish people. Fasting was employed as they sought forgiveness from egregious sins that they'd committed or when loved ones needed restoration for health issues, when people needed protection from danger or needed protection from their enemies. Fasting is not just a phenomenon of the Old Testament. Fasting continues to be recognized as an important way to draw near to God and to seek his face in times of hardship and trouble. Today, Provost of Living Faith Bible Institute Brandon Briscoe has invited Pastor James Fyffe to discuss what the Bible says about fasting. James is a professor of Missiology at the LFBI, as well as professor of nursing at Rockhurst University. Visit https://www.lfbi.org/learnmore

What is fasting and is it relevant to us today?
Fasting isn't just about skipping meals. Discover the unexpected secrets and deeper purposes of fasting and how it can transform your life. It's Day 18 of our 21 day fast. Today, we are going to look at another book on fasting, by Ted Shuttlesworth, Jr. "A Complete Guide to Biblical Fasting: Master the Habit that Provokes God's Favor". DISCLAIMERS: Remember, fasting does not move God. Fasting moves us. It puts us in a position to receive from God. I am not a medical professional, and nothing in this podcast should be taken as medical advice. Please fast responsibly. If you have any underlying health issues or unhealthy relationship with food, do not fast. And if you are going on an extended fast, it's a good idea to check with your doctor first. Father God, We embrace this time of fasting as an act of pure obedience. As we deny our physical needs, help us to focus more intently on You, deepening our spiritual connection and understanding of Your will. We ask for strength and discipline during this fast, recognizing it as a powerful tool to humble ourselves. May this time of fasting be a testament to our dedication to You and our desire to emulate Christ in every aspect of our lives. Guide us in using this period to worship You wholeheartedly, and to prepare ourselves for the work You have called us to. As we commit to this fast, to strengthen not only our bodies but also our spirits, aligning our desires with Your holy purpose. Father, I lift up our community and those participating in this fast. May we support and encourage each other, growing together in faith and love. Let this time be a turning point in our lives, where we come to know You more deeply and serve You more faithfully. May this be a time of renewal, growth, and profound spiritual awakening. We commit this fast, our lives, and all that we do, to You. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen. ----- Thank you for joining me on Meditating The Word today. This is Cheree, reminding you that you are in my prayers. I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow. The bible defines fasting differently than the world does, and even defines fasting & prayer differently than much of the church does in this generation. Fasting in the bible ALWAYS involves food, and always involves pursuing God in prayer. God promises to draw near to us when we seek Him in prayer and fasting, and Jesus Himself said certain demonic influences or bondages would not move or break without prayer and fasting. This teaching on biblical fasting and prayer will help you discover the many different ways you CAN approach BIBLICAL fasting and to use this discipline the way Jesus did in His obedience and surrender to God and to the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

As we all begin a new year, many of us wish to seek a spiritual "reset" in seeking the Lord for the New Year. One way to seek the Lord in prayer and humility is to fast, because it takes the focus off of ourselves and allows us to worship the God we love. Feasting is a part of the Christian life. We often only ever hear about fasting. Come learn what Biblical Feasting looks like.
Intermittent fasting (IF) is the hot new "diet" that is out there. Simply put, intermittent fasting is a pattern of eating where you systematically starve the body long enough to trigger fat burning. Here are my 2 favorite videos that help explain what IF is: https://youtu.be/vhmtoAYVRSo https://youtu.be/AhdFpWBeJSQ Spiritual (Biblical) Fasting is something that many religions, especially Christians, participate in yearly. Spiritual Fasting is abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose. In other words, spiritual fasting is not simply abstaining from food for dietary purposes, but is to be a time of consecration to God combined with prayer. There are many examples of fasts in the Bible (one of them NOT including a social media or cell phone fast .. will have to listen to the episode to hear more :) In this episode I will share the basics about both types of fasting, share the differences, and briefly give some benefits of both. These topics are very extensive and in this episode I barely scratched the surface. People all around you are suffering and dying. Not just physically, spiritually. You as I, have probably suffered some trauma the last year or so but more likely 20 years ago. Somebody in here is holding onto something that fruitless but you won't let go. Tonight is a good time to heal from that. My dad was a slug. I hated him. Then I fasted and God said forgive him. Because my flesh was weak, 11 days into a fast, I spent the last three months with him without judgement. I was diagnosed with Menderes disease, healed after fasting. There is nothing more powerful, but our educated brain wants to say oh that's too simpley To fill the gap in pain, world creates static by keeping us busy, emails, Facebook, work, news, eating food, extending ourselves beyond our capability. —write down one thing that limits you, that creates static. I need less of that. It creates a tiny bandaid on our lives, covers up some imperfection, takes away from our purpose. Alcohol does this too. Sugar does. Calling your sister to complain about the same thing or to gossip does the same thing. Constantly having the radio on, avoiding the quiet, does the same thing. Acting like nothing is wrong when you're destroyed on the inside. It's hard to believe that But you will never find yourself until you lose yourself, sometimes your heart needs to be broken to understand your smallness and gods bigness. I believe that anything great that you do will be outside of your comfort zone and in faithfulness. Certainty is the opposite of faith. Your uncertainty should lead you to the answer that you are not the answer and do not have all the answers. God is not a genie, but he has every answer you'll ever need. You can't just stay at the surface and expect God to move, not if you want to see big changes in your life. I believe that a lot of what we deal with is a heart issue. a hurt issue. a hurt that isolating yourself from your holy father only creates more hurt. Maybe it isn't hurt, its confusion, you don't know why you do what you do and sometimes even what the heck are you doing and supposed to be doing What are u going to lose this year and replace with something good? Who are you? - a small description whose are you? - a small description What breaks your heart? - what would you change if you knew you had no barriers What is fasting? Removing something that is not as important for something more important. Facebook, Twitter, TV, email, food, relationships, drugs It's not letting the necessities of life overrule the priorities of life Fasting benefits What are the health benefits of fasting? Weight loss, lower cholesterol levels, promotes growth hormone production which burns fat and builds muscle and slows the aging process, help regulate blood sugar which in turn will decrease inflammation and it's slows down and reversed some of the aging process. You're going to detox your mind and your body. So What does it mean to have Toxins in your body? Toxins accumulate through eating processed or fast foods, all the colors, preservatives that we eat get hidden deep into our tissue and fat. It's toxic thoughts too, things you have been told or told to yourself and set anchor with you life on. This is all you'll ever be or have, you should could wouoda, you'll never be this…..I hate him or her, and thoughts like I'll never forgive that person How do you get rid of toxins? You pray and fast What are the risks? Dehydration is the first thing so make sure you are drinking water and lots of it. Blood sugar levels will drop, you may not be diabetic after this. Lmnt salt packs What should people expect to happen to their bodies when they fast? Lose weight, eventually feel great, clearer mind after the first few days. The motive of biblical fasting is, "I'm hungry for God. What I need is God. What I want is God. Who I need to be around is God." It's that angst you read about in the Psalms so often. "As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs for you. When am I going to meet with God? When can I be in the presence of God? How long, O Lord, will you forsake me?" Fasting is a hunger for God that transcends and trumps other hungers in our lives. It's that moment when we go, "I'm using this time I normally set aside to eat to press into God and to pray and seek his face. I'm going to take this time I normally watch television and I'm going to press into God and I'm going to pray. I'm going to take this time I normally do this and I'm going to press into God and pray." Faith is a garden, and everyday I have to work on it or it will die and I on the inside will die God plants and seed and then treats it like a gardener. Are you willing to be tilled soil in order to grow and change? Jesus is the root, and growth happens in the dirt. God isn't a genie, embrace the process, embrace the mundane embrace the same. Gardner may come day after day and see nothing, does that mean quit? Does that mean something new isn't growing? It takes time to see a sprout. The word Well watered vine dryed out cactus Trellis trellis (treillage) is an architectural structure, usually made from an open framework or lattice of interwoven or intersecting pieces of wood, bamboo or metal that is normally made to support and display climbing plants. Vine any plant having a long, slender stem that trails and climbs by winding itself about a support or holding fast with tendrils or claspers. At first glance, the vine is abundantly healthy. It's leaves bright green and the stems full of juicy chlorophyll and oxygen. There is no brown, no signs of decay except for the lighter green, almost yellow tips of the leaves just outside of the trellis that it lays upon. On further inspection, the trellis, though still brightly painted from years ago, has started to warp and fray on its ends, leaving rotten wood and bugs creeping into its interior. Due to the exceeding decay, the vine has taken on the damage and can no longer grow to its expected heights. And while the vine is the main subject, the one that moves people by its beauty and mystery, the trellis is needed just as much to hold up the wonderful vine so that all can see. Are you willing to work on your trellis? The parts that people don't see? Matthew 4- Jesus goes into the wilderness, fasting for 40 days the. Satan comes into the picture and tempts him with worldly things, with bread. Then afterward, as Jesus returns, his very first sermon and teaching involves Matthew 6 Detox Matthew 6:16-18 ESV "And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Biblical Examples of fasting: • Moses 40 day fast before God gave him the 10 Commandments. Elijah fasted 40 days, Jesus fasted 40 days. • Esther called for the city to fast for 3 days and God spared them from the evil plot of Haman. • Hannah was depressed because she couldn't have a baby so she fasted in 1 Samuel and God heard her prayer and soon Samuel was born. • Judah, Ezra, Daniel, the people of Ninevah, Nehemiah, David, Anna, Paul, Peter all fasted in the Bible. But beware: the Bible says 1 "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 "Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 "And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16 "And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? - Matthew 6:1-26 How long do I fast? Length • Joshua fasted 40 days • Daniel fasted 21 days from bread and meat and wine • Peter fasted 3 days What happens when we fast? God is about to spiritually body slam you...in a good way. Be excited. You will be healthier. We begin to pursue God in a more intense way, our prayer life becomes more serious, our prayers become more specific. Voice of God becomes clearer. Repentance and recovery will occur. Mourning loss of the person that we just lost and God fills your heart. You let him know you are seeking him. Your senses for the things of heaven heighten. The static of the world will darken. John 15:1-4 ESV "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. *This content is strictly the opinion of Dr. Jake Parrish and is for informational and educational purposes only.
