Openhanded leadership is about modeling and creating culture. One of the most difficult places to maintain openhanded leadership is when key employees make the decision to leave the organization. Leaders must prioritize the person over the organization. In this episode from 2015, Joel Thomas and I discuss how to do so. We want to get to know you better! If you grew up anything like me, singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat was ALL OVER your first iPod. After blowing up with her debut single, “Bubbly,” Colbie became a voice for the singers and dreamers of my generation and has since topped 15 billion streams, 2 Grammys, and is releasing her 7th solo album October of 2023. What we love about her new album, besides that it's in the country genre this go ‘round, is how rich, raw, and vulnerable the record is as she takes us through the journey of grieving and healing forward after the end of her decades-long engagement. The tension she's learned and teaches us to hold between missing and cherishing past loves as well as embracing new seasons “Wide Open” is an invitation for listeners to live wholly human – in the hurt, the hope, and everything else Along the Way, as the album is so aptly titled. Join me, Colbie, and our dear friend Rahaf on this week's episode to get their insights on letting go, living openhanded, and loving yourself. Today's guest on Cucumber Talks is Shara Drimalla, a content writer for Bible Project, which is a nonprofit animation studio making the unified story of the Bible accessible to everyone everywhere. Here's what we discussed: How Shara used Bible Project videos while she was a high school Bible teacher and later achieved her dream of working at Bible Project Bible Project's upcoming Paradigm series and upcoming app release. Paradigm is Bible Project's breakdown for how to read the Bible How Shara reads the Bible differently now than when she was in her 20s. How as kids the Bible was mostly a collection of disjointed stories Some people, particularly seminary students, are reluctant to change their beliefs about the Bible What is the Bible NOT? Shara believes the Bible isn't a rulebook, a theology dictionary, or a devotional grab bag. Despite good intentions, people who read the Bible in these ways are making it into something it's not. Shara's and Bible Project's view is that the Bible is one unified story that leads to Jesus. The Bible is an ancient book written in multiple literary styles with a variety of authors and languages other than English. Applying a plain modern reading of the Bible is not an accurate way of truly understanding it. Why it's important to read the Bible as one unified story, even if you're not a Bible Scholar. Resources like Bible Project make the Bible's story more accessible and easy to understand How to approach the Bible like you're visiting a foreign country instead of approaching it with your cultural view of the world The Bible is full of design patterns that weave together an amazing story. Shara summarizes the entire Bible's unified story from Genesis to Revelation There are different views on the atonement, what Jesus's death and resurrection actually meant. The Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) pointed toward Jesus. The authors in the New Testament show what Jesus's death meant by referencing the Old Testament Jesus's message was countercultural and multicultural. He introduced a new way to be human and invited everyone, not just Jews. Expanding the Kingdom of Heaven is about spreading the story of Jesus. The Kingdom of Heaven on earth exists wherever there are followers of Jesus Shara gives an overview of Bible Project's 7 Pillars which describe their approach to reading the Bible The benefits of reading the entire Bible in Chronological order and Bible Project's resources that help Openhanded and closehanded issues in Christianity, agreeing on the core beliefs every Christian should hold vs Biblical views that are more up for interpretation Resources Mentioned In This Episode: The Lost World Series by John Walton Bible Project - How to Read the Bible Exploring My Strange Bible Podcast - The Amazing Jonah More Bible Project videos: Sacrifice and Atonement Tree of Life Gospel of the Kingdom Heaven and Earth Contact Cucumber Talks Have questions, feedback, or ideas for the show? How willing are you to share your "stuff"? Time? Energy? Possessions? Finances? In this message, Pastor Matt Poorman discusses 2 reasons to press into being more openhanded in how we live our lives with one another, especially as church, despite the seemingly selfish society in which we are living today. He encourages us to have way more giving moments and, ultimately, a giving kind of life! This message continues our study of the first century church as a part of our "Bare Necessities: The Marks of a Healthy Start" series.

"Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God." (2 Corinthians 9:10,11 NIV) Kalyn Burke digs into the Word to describe the difference between seed and bread. God provides generously to meet all of our needs. He also supplies the extra that is intended to be seed for investment and multiplication. Learn the purpose of the provision we receive and how we are equipped for generosity. Also, our congregation shares real testimonies of seed, bread, giving, and salvation. The Word is a reality we walk out every day!

Acts 13 - One of the hardest things we encounter in life can be surrendering the dream of what we hoped might look like to embrace the reality of what is. I’m convinced the early church had to wrestle through this process in the same way that we do today. They gave up their brightest and their best (Paul and Barnabas) and sent them off for the sake of the kingdom. We see in this passage of scripture that Jesus builds his kingdom of freedom through surrendered people! Are you surrendered?
January 28, 2008 John and Jane Doe 4321 Happily Thereafter Ave. Everytown, USA To the Companies Who Want Our Money, Yesterday's selling techniques aren't working so good. Have you noticed? We're betting that your traffic has been trending downward for the past few months. Are we right? (If we're wrong, keep up the good work. You're doing all the right things.) But if your traffic has, in fact, been trending downward, here are some things for you to think about: Today's customer expects easy access to information. And that information includes the price. Quit trying to romance everything. Cut the hype. Just say it clean and tight, shoulders back, looking us directly in the eye. Give us the truth with clarity. Transparency. Openhanded disclosure. Nothing hidden behind your back. If you tell us about a product or service online and we wonder what it costs and we learn the only way you'll tell us the price is if we give up our contact information, we think: 1. you're charging too much and you know it. 2. you want an opportunity to “overcome our objections” or 3. you're planning to contact us and control the conversation with rigged questions under the pretense that you're “consulting” us for our own good. 4. you want us to give you a credit card number, 5. but what you really need is a clue. Sorry, we don't mean to be rude. You seem to be sincere in your confusion about why traffic is down and we're just trying to tell you the truth you need to hear. Yes, it's partly the economy. But you've also lost touch with the times. You've got reasons for not disclosing your prices. We understand that. You don't want to give your competitors “the edge” or something or other. But companies with good prices aren't afraid to share them. In their ads. Over the phone. On their websites. From the housetops. Or at least that's how it seems to us. Have a great 2008. John and Jane Doe
