In this episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on Sept. 12th, 2025, Rob Breakenridge joins Matt from Calgary, filling in for Jen Gerson, who is on assignment out of town. The two men acknowledge — but deliberately steer away from — the emerging details of the rapidly unfolding Charlie Kirk assassination investigation. Instead, they focus on the bigger picture: the mood, the vibes, and why so many people on both sides of the border seem to be bracing for some kind of civil conflict against a vaguely defined “them.” Neither is certain how Canada, or the United States, can pull back from this trajectory. Or if people really even want to. This episode of The Line Podcast is brought to you by Universities Canada. Canada has promised millions of new homes, shorter waits in health care and stronger defence. But promises don't design and engineer roads, staff clinics or secure networks — people do. That's why we need a clear, coordinated system to attract and retain the world's best talent, while creating more opportunities for Canadians. The best and brightest should always see Canadian universities as their first choice. It's time to put talent at the centre of Canada's priorities. The path forward starts with training people — and Canada's world-class universities are ready to lead the way.To learn more, visit Univcan.ca.After that, they turn to issues closer to home. The Carney government has officially launched its Major Projects Office and revealed the first programs slated for elevation. Rob breaks down what's on the agenda and why, despite the office not explicitly mentioning a pipeline, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has responded positively. Matt, meanwhile, shares the part of the announcement he found oddly amusing — but also despair-inducing — in the way it revealed deeper national challenges. Both men agree that it might be better to just fix the problems with approvals, rather than creating a new, special unit that gives a few chosen projections the efficient treatment, while everything else suffers. Matt quips that this is Canadian health-care-style thinking applied to permit approvals. Should go fine. This episode of The Line Podcast is also brought to you by Forestry For The Future. Canadian forestry supports 200,000 workers, generates $87 billion in annual revenue, contributes $21 billion annually to our nation's economy, and provides the products we need to build homes and drive economic growth. While trade barriers from the U.S. are siphoning jobs and investment away, Canada's own approval processes and regulations are preventing critical projects that both prevent wildfires and boost our economic self-reliance.We can and should have programs that expand domestic wood use, advance biomass use and pulp market opportunities, and cut red tape and regulatory barriers. The government of Canada has a clear opportunity to stand up for Canadian forestry at a time of growing global uncertainty. We need real action that puts Canadians first — supporting employees and their families, securing stability for our businesses, and protecting the long-term potential of our sector and its people. To learn more, visit ForestryForTheFuture.ca.Finally, Matt and Rob interview each other about their latest Line columns. Rob walks listeners through his piece on Alberta's book ban that badly backfired, while Matt explains why he thinks Canadians are rightfully losing faith in their own safety — and why that needs to change if Canada is to avoid sliding down the same dangerous path already visible in the United States.Cheerful stuff, eh? Why We Give: Finding Freedom from Self-Righteousness

Have you ever felt a quiet sense of pride after giving, like you were just a little more faithful than others? It's a subtle temptation, but one we must take seriously. When our giving becomes a way to elevate ourselves rather than glorify God, we've missed the heart of generosity—and possibly much more. When Giving Becomes About UsSelf-righteous giving hides behind good behavior. It's giving to feel morally superior. Giving to prove we're spiritually ahead. Giving to show God—or others—that we've “got it right.”Jesus addressed this in Luke 18:“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector… The Pharisee… prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people… I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' But the tax collector… said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.”The tithing, fasting Pharisee was not justified—not because his actions were wrong, but because he trusted in himself. The Heart CheckReligious acts, even impressive ones, can't save us. When we give to make ourselves look good, we risk trusting in our performance rather than Christ's finished work. There's nothing wrong with joy in giving—God loves a cheerful giver. But when joy turns to superiority, we've crossed the line. As Deuteronomy 8 reminds us:“Remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…”Everything we have—even the ability to give—comes from Him.Giving That Glorifies GodJesus warns in Matthew 6 not to give for the sake of being noticed. True generosity is humble, often quiet, and motivated by gratitude. It's giving that reflects Christ, not ourselves.John the Baptist put it best: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”So, if you notice pride in your giving:Confess it to the Lord. His grace cleanses and corrects.Refocus on gratitude. Remember how much you've been forgiven.Practice hidden generosity. Give anonymously or where no one will notice. Before each gift, pray: “Lord, may this reflect You, not me.” Because generosity is never about proving ourselves—it's about responding to the One who gave everything for us.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 52 and currently have about 71% of my 401(k) invested in company stock, which has been generating returns of 30–36%. When and how should I begin diversifying to protect my retirement savings while still benefiting from my company's potential growth? My husband (62) and I (58) are debating whether to start collecting Social Security now. We still run our own business and earn an income, but I'm concerned about how starting Social Security could affect our Medicare coverage. What's the best strategy for our situation?I own and rent out a three-unit apartment building and want to know if there are any advantages to placing the property in an LLC.Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Synopsis of Tonight's Group on The Evergetinos Volume II Hypothesis XXXIV Sections A6-F Conclusion: When we come across the high standards of the desert fathers, especially if they are jarring to our own sensibilities, we can tend to not just to read their writings critically but to dismiss them as hyperbolic or extreme.  Yet it is precisely the internal dis-ease that their writings create within us that brings us back to the heart of the gospel and what it means to be a Christian.  What does it mean to put on the mind of Christ and have our conscience formed and shaped by the grace of God and the gospel? How does it shape the way that we understand what it means to be a human being or the things that we take for granted such as laughter or familiarity in relationships? Upon closer examination, we see that there are many displays of humor that are rooted in a lack of sobriety and sense of reverence for our own dignity and the dignity of others. We rarely think about how our words and actions, our bearing or form of dress, affect those who are around us.  Are we seeking to protect the dignity and spiritual well-being of those around us? Do we hold their identity as sons and daughters of God as something precious and to be revered?  The simplest realities of day-to-day life and interactions need to be attended to the most; for they are often the means through which we are tempted. The evil one can make use of what is good and pleasing about our lives as a means to draw us into excess.  In the end, it is Christ and the gospel that must be the lens through which we view our lives and behavior. We see Christ, who, although perfectly innocent and filled with love was stripped of dignity, mocked and pinned to the cross. We hear Him say to us “take up your cross daily and follow me” - calling us to a sober sense of what our life in this world will be like as his disciples. In the beatitudes, we hear Him say “blessed her those who mourn” reminding us not only of our share in his cross but the necessity of morning for our own sins.  Christ has everything to do with what affects or afflicts us. --- Text of chat during the group: 00:06:25 Fr. In Philippians three, verse ten, the Apostle Paul expresses a desire to share in the suffering of Jesus Christ. And for most of his thirty-five-year ministry, suffering is exactly what Paul endured. Coming up next, Ron takes us to Paul's appearance before the Jewish Supreme Court. His life is on the line, but rather than defend himself, he defends the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

If you were on trial for being a Christian, what would you say? How would you defend yourself? In Acts chapter twenty-two, the Apostle Paul appears before the Jewish Supreme Court, also known as the Sanhedrin. But rather than defend himself, he defends the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And he does it, surprisingly enough, with a cheerful attitude. Stay with us now as Ron moves ahead in his series, “Paul: Surprised by Grace.”

See also: Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. Plus, porn!

Yoga Inspiration
#203: An Ocean of Grace, Saumanasya - The Cheerful Disposition of the Yogi's Mind

Yoga Inspiration

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2025 51:05

Many of us come to yoga seeking relief. Relief from pain, from restlessness, from uncertainty. And sometimes we find it. But over time, what we discover is more lasting than relief. We discover presence. We discover steadiness. We discover a kind of joy that doesn't have to shout. It only has to be. So we practice. Not to get rid of pain, but to know it. To meet it with clarity and care. And in that meeting, we find something remarkable: joy is still possible.   It is a joy that knows sorrow. A happiness that is not threatened by difficulty. This is the depth of saumanasya. Saumanasya is defined by Patañjali as cheerfulness—it could also be translated as “mental clarity,” “gentle gladness,” or even “spiritual contentment.” But this is not about putting on a smile or chasing a feeling. It's the natural radiance of a mind that has become unentangled. In Pāli, the same word appears as saumanassa, and it's spoken of as a kind of mental vedanā—a feeling tone that arises not from external stimulation, but from deep, internal stillness.   It's not the kind of joy that explodes in celebration or depends on everything going our way. It's the joy that arises when the striving quiets down. When the noise fades. When the heart is unburdened. And perhaps most beautifully, it's a joy that does not replace suffering, but includes it.   Practice LIVE with me exclusively on Omstars! Design Better Podcast

Hi everyone! We recently surveyed our audience and learned that many of you would like to see more video. So, we're kicking off a new run of video episodes, beginning with our interview featuring John Cleese—actor, writer, comedian, and author of Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide. You can watch the interview on our Substack, or on Youtube. Enjoy! Original intro The Ministry of Silly Walks. The Cheese Shop. French Taunting. If you haven't seen any of these Monty Python sketches before, do us a favor and go watch one or two of them. You'll discover—or re-discover—why our guest for this episode is a creative comic legend.  John Cleese starred in and co-wrote the award-winning series Fawlty Towers, was nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay of A Fish Called Wanda, and even has a species of lemur named after him (Cleese's wooly lemur, Avahi cleesei). He's also an expert on the creative process, and so if you're looking for a new framework to level-up your own workflow, his book Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide is a great resource. We talk with John about his new book, and also about creative collaboration in the midst of friction, how to be comfortable with ambiguity, and creating boundaries of space and time to get in a creative mode. We also get to ask him a question that's been bugging us ever since we first watched Monty Python and The Holy Grail. These days, we can all use a little more laughter in our lives. We hope our interview with John sparks some joy, and leaves you with some new creative tools. Thanks for listening. Bio John Cleese is an English actor, comedian, writer, and film producer. He achieved success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and as a scriptwriter and performer on The Frost Report. In the late 1960s, he co-founded Monty Python, the comedy troupe responsible for the sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus and the four Monty Python films, And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life. In the mid-1970s, Cleese and his first wife, Connie Booth, co-wrote and starred in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Later, he co-starred with Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis, and former Python colleague Michael Palin in A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. He also starred in Clockwise, and has appeared in many other films, including two James Bond films, two Harry Potter films, and the last three Shrek films. He is also the author of Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide. *** This ad-supported episode is available to everyone. Embark on this year-long voyage through the Bible, and let each day's passage uplift and inspire you. TODAY'S EPISODE:   Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible, dear friends! Today marks a milestone in our journey through the Bible as we reach day 100. What an incredible century of days together, immersing ourselves in God's Word! In this episode, we dive into 1 Samuel chapters 6 and 7, Psalm 72, and 2 Corinthians chapter 9. Hunter, our devoted host, guides us with heartfelt reflections and an inspiring call to live as cheerful givers, much like the generous farmers that Apostle Paul speaks of. As we reflect on God's abundant provisions and the power of generosity, we'll also join in a time of prayer and thanksgiving. Tune in as Hunter encourages us to sow generously into the lives of others, reminding us of the joy found in giving. As always, the scriptures enlighten us, and this meaningful time spent in God's presence enriches our hearts. Thanks for joining, and let's continue this journey of listening and growing in faith together! TODAY'S DEVOTION: TODAY'S DEVOTION: Good farmers. Cheerful farmers. Paul draws a picture for us — a picture of how we should be living, inspired by the life of farmers. Interestingly, farmers, while they may not live extravagantly, possess an extravagant heart. Why, you ask? Because farmers have an understanding. They understand that from the seed, which comes from God, stems their bread. It's a portrait of reliance and gratitude. For us, the lesson is that everything we have, right down to the very seed, comes from God. He is our source, both the giver and the increaser. So, how are we sowing today? If we sow sparingly, the harvest will reflect that. But if we sow generously, the bounty will overflow. Paul's intention is not just agricultural; it's a divine principle. This truth governs not only fields but hearts. Being good and cheerful farmers, knowing everything is His, leads us to sow generously into the lives of others. For those in need, for those who require encouragement, and for those in God's fields. Participating with God's generous heart is thrilling — knowing it truly is better to give than to receive. This calling to be cheerful, generous sowers is a universal prayer. A prayer for our souls, our families, and for everyone. May God help us live out this call as good and cheerful farmers. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL
