Francis Schaeffer said, “Ideas have consequences.” If people believe false ideas, they inevitably act on them in disastrous ways. The only solution to such false ideas is to replace them with the truth. Theology and doctrine matter. In this series, we will work through important doctrine for followers of Jesus to understand as they strive to follow Jesus. This week, we explore the Doctrine of God. This Week, we wrap up our series on the Shema. What does it mean to love the Lord with all our strength? Text: Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Topics: All In, Muchness, Me'od Big Idea of the Message: Love for God isn't something we should meter out.
Text: Deuteronomy 26:1-11 Opening Statement: To harvest crops is to bring them in, out of the cold and storms. Harvesting is a sheltering, a keeping after growing is done and a celebration at year's end. In the Old Testament, the harvest was observed by the feast of Succoth or the Feast of Booths. The feast was a reminder of God's bountiful goodness and the blessing of God's providence in the lives of his people. We celebrate Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving, as farmers and families are giving thanks for a bountiful yield, as in the days of old, we pause to ask ourselves: • What, in our lives, by divine grace, has been safely gathered in, sheltered from the storms of life? • What relationships have been restored? • What financial difficulties have been resolved? • What health problems have been cleared up? Now that is “A Reason to Be Thankful!” Let's consider three reasons to be thankful today. I) A reason to be thankful is remembering God is the source of all good things. The ability to give thanks with a joyful heart begins with recognizing God as the source of all good things and that God is always faithful toward his children. James 1:17 Remembering what God has done, made possible, or mercifully prevented doesn't just provide us with a sense of self-satisfied gratitude. Rather, the writer of Deuteronomy teaches to remember, which is the first step to thankfulness. We are to remember God is the one who is faithful and provides, not us. II) A reason to be thankful is sharing God's gifts and blessings with others. Few farmers hoard what they harvest. Jesus tells us about one and it didn't end well for him in Luke 12:16-21 They must part with their crops so that both they and their neighbor may eat. As Christians, we can't hold on to what isn't ours to start with. Psalm 24 declares, “The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, and they that dwell therein.” Sharing God's generosity with others is the very act of giving thanks. Giving thanks is sharing God's blessings with others. III) A reason to be thankful comes from thanking God with a joyful heart. We've all heard said, “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor. 9:7). But we rarely quote all of what Paul originally wrote to the Corinthian church, “Each one of you must make up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” We too are compelled to make up our minds to offer what we have with joyful hearts. In Closing: May God continue to remind us that a thankful heart creates thankfulness and thankfulness leads to Thanksgiving. Sunday Sermon by Kevin Jensen — In Deuteronomy, Moses' final addresses to Israel, he calls Israel to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength, and to obey God's commands because they love him. We love God, too, and out of love for him who has been so generous to us we obey him, remember him, and tell the story of all he has done for us. Text: Deuteronomy 6
Fear and worry are endemic in our culture. Whether it's TV news, social media, our upbringing, or our genetics, it seems we are being conditioned to fear. God knows what fear can cost a person and He wants us to live beyond it. That's why, more than any other single command in the Bible, God tells us to “Fear not.” But for most people simply being told to not be afraid is not enough. Information alone is not sufficient to enable most of us to overcome patterns of fear that are real deeply ingrained in us.Moving beyond fear requires more than receiving information – it requires taking action. There's a beautiful picture of this in Deuteronomy 32. It's taken from nature and mother eagle's efforts to get her young to fly. When the time comes for the eaglets to leave the nest, the mother stirs up their once soft and comfortable surroundings causing the once hidden thorns and pebbles to come to the surface. She intentionally creates discomfort for her young – not because she wants to harm them, but because she wants them to learn that there's more to life than sitting in the nest. God uses the same strategy with His people. 1. God challenges those He loves. And when He does… 2. You will experience fear. It's just natural. But here's what you need to know: People who soar are not people who never experience fear. People who soar are those who do experience fear, and yet refuse to be turned back by it. Fear is not the issue. What you do in the midst of the fear is.This is the pattern: 1. God challenges. 2. People fear. And…3. God reassures us of His presence and power.I love the words He spoke through Isaiah: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)But all of that implies a fourth step:4. You must step out. This is where faith comes into play. You see, some people play the “when-then” game. “When I don't feel afraid...then I'll take action.” “When I don't feel afraid, then I'll call the person and seek to restore our relationship.” “When I don't feel afraid, then I'll apply for the job.” “When I don't feel afraid, then I'll start tithing.” “When I don't feel afraid, then I'll join a small group.” “When I don't feel afraid, then I'll get involved in this ministry.” And you know what? Those people wait their whole lives. But it's only when you leave the safety of the nest, as fearful as that may be, do you find that God is ready, willing, and able to carry you on His wings.5. As you take a first step of obedience, God will supply the power for you to take other ones. God challenges. I fear. He reassures. Then I take a step. As I do, He supplies power. And I learn that God can be trusted. And the wonderful reward of the whole thing is that what used to frighten you doesn't frighten you as much anymore. Who knows? Before you know it, you might begin to start soaring. Text: Deuteronomy 32:9-11; Isaiah 41:10Originally recorded December 8, 2013, at Fellowship Missionary Church, Fort Wayne, IN.
We can choose to receive blessings or curses from God. Yes, that's right, its your choice. Today, Pastor Pace will explain this in detail. Text: Deuteronomy 30:19-20 "19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them."Please hit follow and don't forget to give us a 5-star rating and leave a review. Text: Deuteronomy 6:1-7 (NKJV)God has given many responsibilities to a parent, both father and mother. While providing and protecting our children is at the top of the list, we also find at the top of the list that they are to be trained, especially receiving training that brings about spiritual knowledge and growth! From Deuteronomy 6 and Ephesians 6 we find specific instructions for the spiritual education of a child and it is clear that this teaching BEGINS in the HOME. Taking a page from the school system that says a child needs to learn the 3 Rs (reading, writing, and arithmetic), we find there are 3 Rs for spiritual training. We are to train our children to have a REVERENCE for God, to have a RESPECT for others, and to grow in being RESPONSIBLE for oneself! Sermon Notes Discussion Guide
