Eine Sendung von Henning Cordes, zu Gast: Historiker Kilian Baur Mittelalter-Elemente in Rock und Metal: Die gibt es bereits seit Jahrzehnten. Man könnte fast behaupten, so ganz ohne Schwerter, Schilde und mittelalterlich inspirierte Fantasy-Anteile würde den Genres im Ganzen etwas fehlen. Nun gibt es aber nicht nur Altmetaller wie Ronnie James Dio, die im Musikvideo gelegentlich als Krieger im Fellkostüm herumliefen. Nicht wenige Bands sind mit völliger Hingabe dabei und verschreiben sich etwa dem Viking- oder Pagan-Metal. Die Grenzen, an denen Fun, Fantasy und ernstzunehmende Befassung mit mittelalterlichen Texten und Instrumenten verlaufen, sind nicht immer klar gezeichnet. Der Historiker Kilian Baur hat sich mit der Darstellung des Mittelalters im Metal beschäftigt - unter anderem in seinem Buch "Dark Medieval Times" - und er klärt auf: Was Sie schon immer über Mittelalter-Metal wissen wollten, aber bisher nicht zu fragen wagten.

Roestig. Dat is wellicht de beste term om het muzikale jaar te omschrijven van Osmium-babbelaars Pim en Niels. Hoewel het een enorm goed muziekjaar was, en de heren fysiek fitter zijn dan ooit, lijken de rimpels in het luistergedrag van het duo alsmaar dieper en dieper te worden. Volgens traditie behandelen de heren aan het einde van het jaar hun persoonlijke jaarlijstjes en daarover zijn beide heren niet bijster positief. Waar zijn de verrassingen? Waar is de experimentatiedrang? Waar is de wil om de luistersleur te doorbreken? Als zelfs een twaalf maanden durende, honderd albums tellende luisterchallenge en een sloot aftandse festivals in allerlei uithoeken van het land én daarbuiten geen uitkomst kunnen bieden om de jaarlijsten in florissante staat te brengen, is er dan nog hoop voor de presentatoren van de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands? Huh, het lijstjesseizoen is dit jaar al in oktober aangebroken? Jawel, Osmium geeft daarvoor het startschot. En dat wordt niet gedaan met de minste lijst. Pim en Niels zworen bij de geboorte van de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands dat ze nooit iets zouden recenseren. Echter leven we in het meest kritische tijdperk. Alles behoeft een beoordeling. En als men op Google Maps een cijfer kan geven aan Mount Fuji, dan kan dat ook zeker aan ons geliefde muziekgenre. Dit is dan ook exact de taak die de presentatoren op zich nemen: het opstellen van een kolossale tierlist, bestaande uit alle metal, hardcore en punk (sub)genres onder de zon. Jazeker, zelfs na vierenzestig afleveringen worden er nog nieuwe dieptepunten bereikt in het vat van “goede” ideeën. Zoals verwacht gaat deze exercitie niet zonder horten of stoten. Wat begint met sterk onderbouwde argumenten en beoordelingen, verzandt al snel in discussies over hoe het wiel heette toen het werd uitgevonden en uitspraken als “Who cares? F-tier!”. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, wordt Soulcrusher, de vaste prik in het festivallandschap, natuurlijk ook dit jaar weer vakkundig ontleed. Daarnaast ramharde muziektips van een jonge band met een gerijpte plaat, en het album dat zeker het jaar gaat winnen. Natuurlijk worden er ook nog wat concerttips gegeven, waarvan er eentje Dries Roelvink op de poster heeft staan. Oh ja, en de stickers die eeuwen geleden beloofd werden? 1995 wurde in Weimar eine durch und durch besondere Band gegründet, die nach zehn Studioalben, unzähligen Auftritten und tausenden Circlepits vor zwei Jahren mit dem durch und durch besonderen "The Divine Horsemen"-Album ihr Jubiläum feierte. Diese Jam-Session, bei denen sich Fuchs, Volk-Man und Co. musikalisch und intuitiv komplett austoben konnten, bündelte sich zu neuer Kraft, die mit "Wilde Kinder" nun neu entfacht wird. Sicherlich setzt das nunmehr elfte Studioalbum dort an, wo "Der rote Reiter" 2017 aufhörte. Doch frische Ideen, Inspirationen en masse und die wirklich wichtigen Fragen der Menschheit spornte die Truppe zu neuen Großtaten an. Herausgekommen ist ein typisches Album der Reiter, das einmal mehr einen herrlichen Spagat zwischen Genie und Wahnsinn aufkocht, bestens zwischen den verschiedensten Genres hin- und herpendelt und bei genauerer Betrachtung schlichtweg gehaltvolle Musik mit hochinteressanten Texten parat hält. Durchleuchtet werden daher nicht nur das Jubiläumsalbum sowie die Herangehensweise an die neue Scheibe, sondern vor allen die einzelnen Songs, die dank Tiefgang und Spielwitz das Album zu einem wahrhaftigen Sahnestück verwandeln. Auch wagen Marcel und Volk-Man einen kurzen Ausblick auf künftige Taten, bis am Ende beide auf ein sehr interessantes und inspiratives Gespräch zurückblicken können. Blakylle wurde 2014 von Gitarrist Sandro im ostfriesischen Leer ins Leben gerufen. Die Intention im Rahmen des Bandprojekts ist es atmosphärischen Black Metal mit Death Metal zu vereinen. Textlich wird ausschließlich auf Themen mit Bezug zum germanischen Heidentum eingegangen, wodurch die Band dem deutschen Pagan Metal zuzuordnen ist. Der Bandname "Blakylle" ist überliefert als Name einer Meeresgöttin des germanischen Volksstammes der Kimbern. Sandro und Al reden in dieser besonderen Ausgabe des Podcast mit Shaggy Schwarz über ihren Weg zu Blakylle und über Metal im Allgemeinen.

The guest for this episode is Fenrier, drummer the Pagan Metal band Varg from Coburg, Germany, who just released a new album Zeichen via Napalm Records. With this seventh full length release, Varg go back to their Pagan Metal roots, and in my discussion with Fenrier, we talk about the band’s vision for this album and their origins. We also go into Pagan history and how that is perceived in Germany, along with how his home place has been dealing with the pandemic along with social issues like the Black Lives Matter movement. It was great to almost exchange notes on the similarities and differences between our respective societal and political climates. It’s always fun to learn about different cultures through music and this episode with Fenrier is a good piece of education.
