Wenn ein Film eine plötzliche Kehrtwendung macht und die bisherige Handlung in einem ganz anderen Licht dastehen lässt, sprechen wir von einem „mind-twisting movie“ oder „plot twist“. Richard Gere - tick. Edward Norton - tick. But wait till you hear about the casting of this movie, and Edward Norton's career to this point, you might be shocked. This could be seen as a typical courtroom drama, and in many ways it is, but it also cuts deeper, so enjoy this with us for the first or another time! Thanks to Fetch and Hisense!

This week, Kat and Jocelyn discuss the Edward Norton thriller Primal Fear! (Other people are in it too, but let's be real, it's all about Edward Norton's character). We talk about a plot that falls apart when you ask a single question, praise the late, great Andre Braugher, and talk about Kat's DEEP distrust of a Richard Gere character and maybe also Richard Gere. Primal Fear was formed in 1997 in Germany by vocalist Ralf Scheepers (formerly of Gamma Ray) and bassist/producer Mat Sinner (of Sinner). The band emerged after Scheepers was considered for the vocal slot in Judas Priest—a move that didn't happen but fueled his desire to create a powerful new metal force. The result was Primal Fear, rooted in traditional heavy metal with a modern power metal edge.Their self-titled debut album, Primal Fear (1998), was released through Nuclear Blast and quickly gained attention for its aggressive riffing, thunderous rhythms, and Scheepers' soaring vocals. Follow-ups like Jaws of Death (1999), Nuclear Fire (2001), and Black Sun (2002) cemented their reputation, especially across Europe and Japan, where their Judas Priest-influenced sound resonated with classic metal fans.Over the years, Primal Fear experienced various lineup changes but remained anchored by Scheepers and Sinner. Guitarists like Tom Naumann, Stefan Leibing, Henny Wolter, and Magnus Karlsson (still with the band) contributed to their evolving sound. Despite changes, the band kept releasing acclaimed albums like Seven Seals (2005), 16.6 (2009), Unbreakable (2012), and Delivering the Black (2014).In 2020, Primal Fear released Metal Commando, marking their first release with Nuclear Blast's new offshoot, Atomic Fire Records. It debuted to strong reviews, showcasing their consistent energy and musical precision even decades in. The album was a statement that the band had no plans of slowing down.In 2023, they released Code Red, an album praised for its intensity and melodic power. With drummer Michael Ehré officially joining the lineup and Tom Naumann returning full-time, Primal Fear entered a new era of tight musicianship and renewed energy. After over 25 years, Primal Fear remains one of the strongest names in European heavy metal, known for powerful vocals, crushing riffs, and a commitment to keeping metal alive and loud.In a candid sit-down with legendary frontman Ralf Scheepers of Primal Fear, the powerhouse vocalist opened up about the band's latest chapter—welcoming new members, unleashing a hard-hitting new album, and gearing up for a global tour that promises to bring metal mayhem to every corner of the stage. Scheepers, known for his unmistakable vocal range and commanding presence, was energized and optimistic as he discussed what fans can expect from the current incarnation of Primal Fear.

The 2008 Best Picture line up had some heavy hitters that are still on people's lists of their favorite movies of all time. So when we saw a legal thriller smack dab in the middle of the stacked season, we were skeptical. However, Tony Gilroy's tight script and directorial debut, Michael Clayton, had us on the edge of our seats from the moment Tom Wilkinson's voice over started until we sat in disbelief in the back of the cab with George Clooney.

This week, the boys head back to 1996, a peak movie year featuring dozens of movies we've all seen multiple times! Dave kicks things off with mini-reviews of “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Companion”. John gives some quick thoughts about “Nickel Boys”. For our featured conversation, we chose “Primal Fear”, the movie that gave us Edward Norton and helped Richard Gere prepare for “Chicago”. Set in and out of a Chicago courtroom, this movie reminds you why movies were better in the 90s. And as John said, it's more than just a genre film! Our phone number is 646-484-9298. We also have a surprise Top 5 that we tagged onto the end of this episode and we'll bet that you can't guess the topic. If you don't want spoilers for the following movies please stop when we start the Top 5. Send us a textBen Edlin and Deborah Aquila came by the studio to sit in the Playwright's Spotlight before the World Premiere of the collaborative play -TH*IR*DS. In this interview, we discussed the long process of developing this play over the course of seven years, the changes made, the possibility of it becoming a pilot but returning the concept to the stage, their process and procedure, and breaking a story. We also touch obstacles in collaboration, Ben's need to "enter the cave", choosing words and punctuation, assembling the team, and the changes that occur during table work as well as the challenges of flipping from playwright to actor when cast in your own piece. It's a insightful discussion that gives both perspectives of a collaborating team. Enjoy.BEN EDLIN is a playwright and actor who trained at Dartmouth College and The Aquila Studio in Los Angeles. He is also a founding member of THE THREE WEEKS NOTICE COLLECTIVE, with whom he recently premiered his play, “Conversations in Exile,” an original adaptation of Chekhov's “Three Sisters.” His newest play, THIRDS opened September 6th and runs through September 29th at The Zephyr Theatre in Los Angeles.DEBORAH AQUILA is casting director and is the mind behind the story of THIRDS. On this week's show, Megan and Dave watched SPEAK NO EVIL (2:29), writer-director James Watkins' remake of the Danish film from 2022. As with many non-American horror films remade for American audiences, the new SPEAK NO EVIL leaves the original's first two-thirds relatively unchanged and then kicks the last third in the ass, replacing it with a watered down ending that, while not entirely stupid, ain't exactly aces. (That being said, the Danish original is extreme. Take a listen to our reactions to it here.) So while we weren't enamored of this new version, we think leads Mackenzie Davis and James McAvoy (at 100 percent) do excellent work, and the changes do have a few good moments sprinkled in. (And Megan likes Aisling Franciosi's performance, too.) Then we talk about SEEKING MAVIS BEACON, a documentary by director Jazmin Jones about her attempts, along with producer Olivia McKayla Ross, to find Renée L'Esperance, the Haitian (and original) model for the software program Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. We had varied reactions, with Dave being more forgiving (!!) than Megan and Evan, who feel the film is dragged down by its pacing and all the problems that can come with uneven editing. Over on Patreon, we watched another movie that has a big twist: PRIMAL FEAR with Richard Gere, Laura Linney, and Edward Norton. It was a first-time watch for Evan, and we have fun talking about how the ending and wheether it holds up 28 years later.
