Send us a textFinnish artist Marko Hietala has navigated a career filled with both triumphs and challenges, and now, after an illustrious four decades in music, he returns with a solo album that encapsulates his journey. Roses From the Deep is a heartfelt homage to his roots, drawing from the timeless influence of classic rock. Known for his tenure with legendary acts like Nightwish and Tarot (which remains active), Marko's decision to step away during the pandemic offered him a renewed perspective on his musical path. While time away can be essential, returning with purpose is just as crucial—and with Roses From the Deep, he proves the wait was more than worthwhile. In this conversation, Marko reflects on his personal and artistic evolution, offering insight into this deeply personal project. Tune in now, and be sure to buy and stream Roses From the Deep, available worldwide via Nuclear Blast Records.

Kronowski is the metal/rock creation of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Adam Kronowski. Bursting on to the scene with the single, ‘The Pyre', Kronowski has amassed millions of streams, appeared on playlists like Spotify's “All New Metal” and “New Blood”, and even charted on the official Spotify charts. Handling all writing, performance, and production himself, Adam pulls from a wide variety of heavy metal and rock influences, and even outside genres like country and reggaeton, to craft heavy metal in a new powerful direction. Teaming up with metal veterans like Dennis Ward (Angra, Helloween) and Matias Kupiainen (Stratovarius) on mixing duties and Mika Jussila (Children of Bodom, Nightwish) and Ted Jensen (Lamb of God, Green Day) on mastering, Kronowski's releases stand in the top ranks of metal releases today on every level. Along with lead guitarist Tommy Lenzi, the group takes the next step forward with the release of the EP, ‘Do I Need a Reason'. Which features the scorching title track, a thrashing anthem for those days when everything just feels off. Coupled with the previous singles ‘The Weight', ‘Tides', ‘Boring', and ‘Shades of Grey', the EP journeys from aggressive breakdowns to pensive ballads and everything in between, providing a truly modern metal experience. We spoke to Adam Kronowski, not just delving into the creative period that birthed this EP and its tracks, but the creative process of Kronowski in general. We also talk about experimentation, including doing harsh vocals for the first time, the ease with which fresh ideas come about, and so much more. Yesterwynde, a word crafted to evoke the essence of time, history, memory, and a connection to past generations, is the latest title from symphonic metal legends Nightwish. This episode contains: From deep within the spooky season we bring you an all new episode. Devon learns you have to jump on those bones early. Devon planed to build up his Halloween decoration collection. Ben doesn't know how to say “Megadeth.” We also mention Funko Pop album covers for Iron Maiden. (https://pop-figures.com/franchise/iron-maiden-282) Ben beat Astro Bot, giggling the entire time. Ben also watched the original Dracula film from 1931, available on Amazon Prime Video. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021814/) Devon then recommends the more recent movie, Renfield (2023). Steven is on book 5 of Dungeon Crawler Carl, Devon just finished book 2. Devon is taking a break to read the new Bobiverse book. (https://www.goodreads.com/series/192752-bobiverse) Future or Now Ben: NASA is working on a plan to replace its space station, but time is running out. Over the next several months, NASA will finalize a strategy for its operations in low-Earth orbit after 2030. Then, toward the end of next year, the space agency will award contracts to one or more private companies to develop small space stations for which NASA and other space agencies will become customers rather than operators. (https://arstechnica.com/space/2024/10/is-nasas-commercial-space-station-program-doomed/). Would you rather go to a space station orbing Earth, or the Moon? Companies are looking into CLDs: Commercial Low-Earth Destinations. Why are we abandoning the ISS? It's old and already has issues, that will only worsen. Also our problematic relationship with Russia. Devon: Evidence of ‘Negative Time' Found in Quantum Physics Experiment. Physicists showed that photons can seem to exit a material before entering it, revealing observational evidence of negative time. (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/evidence-of-negative-time-found-in-quantum-physics-experiment/) We try to understand this mild blowing experiment and result. (https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.03680) Steven: Agatha All Along. This is great spooky fun. The main character stays true to who she was in WandaVision. Ben also finished Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Both deal with the Darkhold. Ben also likes Agatha All Along. Book Club The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2148). The Pit and the Pendulum, Edgar Allan Poe's agonizing tale of terror and suspense, was first published in 1842. One of Poe's many horror stories, The Pit and the Pendulum became famous for its depiction of pure dread. None of us had read this before. Devon was surprised the main character survived. We get side tracked by the Simpsons but eventually talk about the story. Also, “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!” Were we actually horrified reading this story? What was the inspiration for writing this story? The Poet and the Pendulum by Nightwish. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKUS2k35cGQ&ab_channel=_Stargazer_) The Inquisitor by Kamelot. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaKRRGMUCwg&ab_channel=Khan%2CKamelot%26ARKVideos) Next Week: E. M. Forster, The Machine Stops (https://www.cs.ucdavis.edu/~koehl/Teaching/ECS188/PDF_files/Machine_stops.pdf). Is this the most prophetic story of the twentieth century? Published in 1909 and showing Forster's disdain for technological advancement and the way it would make our lives poorer, this story attracted plenty of new readers in 2020 when so many people's lives ‘went virtual'.
Autumn releases arrive with the album for the season, a huge return, and several much hyped debuts to assess, from Unto Others, The Black Dahlia Murder, Nightwish, Zetra, Heriot, Vended, Vicious Blade, & The Jesus Lizard.Unto Others 21:45The Black Dahlia Murder 57:55Nightwish 1:19:30Zetra 1:37:58Heriot 1:52:42Vended 2:08:41Vicious Blade 2:27:34The Jesus Lizard 2:38:44
This episode of The Metal Grotto, Rev. Jeff Ivins brings out some favs of his from the hard rock/metal world with: Nightwish, Obscura, Project Mayhem, U.D.O., Godflesh, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Jinjer, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Suicidal Tendencies, A New Revenge, and finishing up with a song dedicated to his ex-wife by Kobra And The Lotus.
This episode contains: The three spoopiest hosts on this podcast enter the month of October being just... fine? Maybe overwhelmed? Ben was a groomsman for a fancy wedding (or at least a reception, it's a long story) this last weekend, and can we just pause to say how awesome it is that people can keep a friendship alive over decades? Steven's wife is going on a wild bachelorette party cruise and it sounds like A LOT. Meanwhile, we remember the best dog, Charlie, who Steven bid farewell to last Monday. Devon has been just doing his best, nothing to report. This week in space! AI helps distinguish dark matter from cosmic noise. Only... it doesn't yet? Dark matter, the invisible force holding the universe together, is a subject of intense research. It makes up around 85% of all matter and 27% of the universe's contents. Despite decades of research, the true nature of dark matter remains a mystery. Some scientists believe that dark matter particles may occasionally interact, a phenomenon known as self-interaction. Detecting these interactions would provide crucial insights into dark matter's properties. However, distinguishing between dark matter self-interactions and active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback has been a challenge. Astronomer David Harvey has developed a deep-learning algorithm called Inception, which can untangle complex signals and differentiate between dark matter self-interactions and AGN feedback. Inception achieved an impressive accuracy of 80% under ideal conditions (as in, pre-generated image data, not real photos), indicating its adaptability and reliability for future dark matter research. This AI-based approach could significantly impact our understanding of dark matter and help scientists analyze massive amounts of data from space. Shadows searching in the night. Let Ben introduce you to Shade Map, a layer on top of Google Maps that lets you visualize shade anywhere in the world, down to the building level, at any date and time of day. It even lets you add buildings so you can visualize what a new construction project will do to the buildings and areas around it. There's a slider that lets you change the time, and the shadows update in real time. Ben recommends using this on desktop. Also, hat tip to Tom for letting us know about Steam and Valve's battle against arbitration fees. It's not a phase! Research reveals reality of Ice Age teen puberty. New research published in the Journal of Human Evolution reveals that Ice Age teens from 25,000 years ago went through similar puberty stages as modern-day adolescents. Researchers found evidence of puberty stages in the bones of 13 ancient humans between 10 and 20 years old. The study, led by University of Victoria paleoanthropologist April Nowell, found specific markers in the bones that allowed them to assess the progress of adolescence. The technique developed by lead author Mary Lewis from the University of Reading evaluates the mineralization of canines and maturation of bones to identify the stage of puberty reached by the individual at their time of death. The research helps to humanize these teens in a way that simply studying stone tools cannot. Researchers from six institutions collaborated internationally to develop this body of knowledge. This reminds Ben of Saffron teaching neanderthals Cockney slang in episode seven of the Time Bandits television show. Devon informs Ben that Time Bandits didn't get renewed, and the world became a darker place. Book Club: Next week, we'll be reading some classic horror with Edgar Allen Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum. Get in the spirit with this live performance of The Poet and the Pendulum by Nightwish, one of Devon's favorite songs by that band. This week, it's time to discuss The Remedy by Adam Haslett from the Dark Corners collection. It's so well written! Well, until the ending, that is. Spoiler alert: we did not like this one, so much so that we're going to take a break from these Amazon originals for at least a week. Oh, and find out what you call a werewolf with a YouTube channel.
Buckle up, culture enthusiasts! Eden and Peter are back, and they're taking you on an interstellar journey to the haunting world of Solaris. But first, fasten your seatbelts for a whirlwind tour of their latest obsessions:

Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today we're reviewing the new release from US symphonic/cinematic metal act AfterTime titled “Arcane Horizons.” To somewhat give my summary thoughts first, I truly love the original feel and overall aesthetic of this album and the band generally. AfterTime are somewhat unique in their clean and airy vibe, with great if not exceptionally catchy melodies, highlighted by the outstanding vocals of frontwoman Sarah Wolf. The presentation is actually somewhat minimalistic for a symphonic band, where one might expect every bit of the sonic spectrum to be filled with noise. But with AfterTime, less is often more, and I broadly applaud that philosophy. I'll touch on a few of the songs to give some insight. “Lament D'Morgan” is a 6 ½ minute epic track that leans heavily on the strength of Wolf's singing. “By The Tavern's Light” brings a bouncy, folkish quality to the table with, in my opinion, the strongest melding of choruses with Wolf's sweet vocals. I did think, though, that this one also showed some weakness in the guitar mix, with the trade-off lead break between folk-instrument and guitar evincing much dynamism and color in the former and a too muted sound in the later. “Under A Midnight Sun” is a brief instrumental/choral – choral-mental? – arrangement, which would be at home on a Nightwish album. One of my favorite songs on the album is “Armored Heart”, as I think this one best melds the power of Wolf's voice and majesty of the orchestrations. Those symphonics aren't cookie-cutter as with so many melodic metal bands; there seems to have been real thought put into their application within the context of each song. And this is good, because they are integral to every song on the album. The guitar lead breaks are often very understated in their execution – you won't find yourself bombarded with a riptide of notes but rather a considered light mist elicited from the fredboard. And this approach works well on tracks like “Armored Heart” and “Amongst The Trees.” Other songs such as “Sons Of Fenrir” and the Epica-esque “Goddess Of Dark Horizons” in my opinion could have used a little more punch in this area. The track “Of Lust And Rust” has a beautiful vocal melody, and I really enjoy the structures as contrived within each verse. But the whole effect becomes a bit repetitive. Just a little additional change-up would have gone a long way here, including making the abrupt ending seem less so. In my estimation, the vocals are the highlight of the album, and I'd especially recommend this to fans of high-range clean singing. Wolf's voice is crisp and fresh throughout. She is an incredible talent, and I'm frankly excited for what future years hold for this young artist who surely has not come close to the apex of her abilities. The compositions on Arcane Horizons allow her to shine – the production giving plenty of space for her vocals to be heard. You'll never hear other instruments come close to overlapping her voice's position in the mix. Did I mention the backing choirs? They are perfectly added in all the right places and alongside the orchestrations provide a foundation of melody that truly enhances the music on Arcane Horizons. Kudos to the composer for integrating these so well. Looking now at two full albums of material, to my mind AfterTime do a lot of things well. They have a beautiful, distinct sound overall that includes some amazing melodies, and that has translated into some excellent songs… even if they don't always quite reach the heights they're reaching for, it's still worth the journey. I'm giving Arcane Horizons an 8 out of 10 rating. You can purchase Arcane Horizons as well as other music and merchandise from the band's website Aftertimeofficial.com. And be sure to check them out live touring the US this July alongside Helion Prime.

JOB FOR A COWBOY frontman Jonny Davy and EXIT EDEN co-vocalist Anna Brunner join us for this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast Scott Penfold sits down first with JOB FOR A COWBOY vocalist Jonny Davy to discuss the death metal outfit's latest album "Moon Healer". “Moon Healer” is set for release on February 23rd via Metal Blade Records. The release marks JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s first new full-length in a decade! “Moon Healer” is a vivid illustration of what happens when creativity, aggression, and volatility tangle for the first time in years. Like the band's critically adored, 2014-released “Sun Eater” offering, “Moon Healer” is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. Featuring a newly refreshed and reinspired lineup of frontman and co-founder Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis, the band seamlessly picks up the mantle where JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s “Sun Eater” left off. Compared to past offerings, “Moon Healer” is as bone-crushing as JOB FOR A COWBOY has ever been. But it's more consistent and conceptual, composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence. “The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band,” Davy says. “As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn't have considered in our earlier years.” “Moon Healer” was produced by Jason Suecof (DEATH ANGEL, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, DEICIDE) at his Audiohammer Studios and is the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project FLESHWROUGHT, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Koperweis also worked as a session drummer for MACHINE HEAD and WHITECHAPEL and is currently in the band ENTHEOS, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023. In the second portion of the podcast, Scott sits down with Anna Brunner from EXIT EDEN. Symphonic metal unit EXIT EDEN, consisting of Clémentine Delauney (VISIONS OF ATLANTIS), Anna Brunner (LEAGUE OF DISTORTION) and Marina La Torraca (PHANTOM ELITE) recently released their second album, “Femmes Fatales” via Napalm Records. “Femmes Fatales” includes 12 songs in total — half covers, half original compositions. EXIT EDEN‘s new release follows the band's debut, 2017's “Rhapsodies In Black”, which garnered millions of video views (12 million on EXIT EDEN‘s cover of Bonnie Tyler‘s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” alone). Previous singles from “Femmes Fatales”, “Run!” (featuring ex-NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala) and “Separate Ways” (JOURNEY cover) have already surpassed a million views since their respective releases in October and December 2023. Now performing as a trio, EXIT EDEN‘s new full-length follows the path of its predecessor, as it contains six cover versions of famous cross-generational super-hits, but this time also shines by offering six original compositions. With one exception (“Dying In My Dreams”, co-written by Marina La Torraca),the remaining five original songs were brought to life by Brunner and Hannes Braun (KISSIN' DYNAMITE),who is also responsible for recording, production and mixing, whereas the album was mastered by Jacob Hansen (DELAIN, AMARANTHE, VOLBEAT, DESTRUCTION and many more). Self-confidently leading straight into the tempting world of EXIT EDEN, opening “Femme Fatale”, “Buried In The Past” and “Hold Back Your Fear” conjure a mystical atmosphere with strings and orchestral elements, topped by complementary vocals uniting the sonic diversity of the all-femme trio. “Dying In My Dreams” and album closing “Elysium” set the tone as captivating mid-tempo tracks with intense choruses that speak straight to the heart.
