We all have vivid memories of our first rock concerts. You know the ones - when you're young, full of anticipation with no knowledge or understanding of the assault on your senses that a great rock show brings. These are the moments we capture on First Concert Memories and for episode 21, we have none other than Brian Slagel. Yes metalheads, THE Brian Slagel who founded Metal Blade Records more than 40 years ago. The first man to put a Metallica song on a commercially available tape. That's how we know Brian. But on this episode, he's taking us back to when he was a 16 year old KISS fan, hoping to get to see his heroes live for the first time. Thankfully, his neighbor Carl Graves (a performer and musician in his own right who would tour with Oingo Boingo in the 80s & 90s) told Brian's mother that he'd take him to the show and make sure he got home safe. So Brian saw his first ever concert - KISS on the Alive! Tour on February 24, 1976. A teenage Brian was blown away by the pyro, the fire and blood spitting demon, the loudness of the Marshall stacks and the spectacle that a KISS concert in 1976 offered. Brian also tells us about getting to know the original members of KISS on a personal basis, which band he's seen over 300x and his killer new podcast - The 100 Songs That Define Heavy Metal. Danish death-metallic hardcore band Lifesick's latest (and first for label Metal Blade) album ‘Loved by None, Hated by All' was released late 2024 to much acclaim. A record that showcased a tumultuous masterwork of bleak aggressive beauty, Lifesick in all its glory, but with so much more to it as well. It has been, rightfully, lauded as their best work yet which is saying something when you consider the heft and weight of their previous releases. Now, it's all about maintaining the momentum, getting out and wrecking venues around the world, while also preparing for what might come in the future, as far as new music goes. That's Lifesick for you though, always moving forward with ferocious intent. An aspect of their personalities that we discuss in this interview with guitarist Nicolai Lindegaard and vocalist Simon Shoshan. As well as taking a slight retrospective look at Loved by None, Hated by All, especially the work that went into it, how it has shaped the band today, and so much more. STOP THIEF!!! Across the world copyright law is quietly changing or being changed, why? AI models have to learn from somewhere and be trained on existing art. Yet recognising this or compensating artists is a pain in the proverbials for governments who want investment in their countries and economies, so copyright laws are being challenged and changed. A group of artists released a silent album last week in protest, calling it theft!! I discuss this, how artists have very little ability to stand in the way of digital progress. Beginning however with my own trials and tribulations involved in trying to prove to a bot that I am who I am and I own the things I made back before the internet!!There may be trouble ahead!Primordial cds/lps available from https://www.metalblade.com/primordial/http://www.patreon.com/AlanAverillMy Youtube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@AlanAverillNemtheangahead over there and subscribePrimordial on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/0BZr6WHaejNA63uhZZZZek?si=yFFV8ypSSDOESUX62_0TzQsponsored by Metal Blade recordshttps://metalblade.indiemerch.com/promo code AA 2024 for 10% off your order ships worldwideFor info on my work as a booking agent go to:https://www.facebook.com/DragonProductionsOfficialor emailalan@dragon-productions.comI made some very brutal old school death metal right hereVERMINOUS SERPENThttps://open.spotify.com/artist/54Wpl9JD0Zn4rhpBvrN2Oa?si=zOjIulHXS5y9lW1YHMhgTACheck out my other doom bandDREAD SOVEREIGNhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/60HY4pl0nbOrZA6u2QnqDN?si=sxQ5_1htR6G3WIvy1I_wXAand take a listen to some old school electro goth I madeAPRILMENhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/7GzLO1YJClmN5TvV4A37MJ?si=cRXSk24lQKWSqJG-B8KbWQSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/agitators-anonymous-the-alan-averill-podcast. Hymns For The Converted With PHIL BOZEMAN From WHITECHAPEL

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersKnoxville deathcore outfit Whitechapel have spent too long locked down allowing the creative juices to flow and are set to explode with the release of their ninth studio album Hymns In Dissonance via Metal Blade on March 7.While Hymns In Dissonance follows 2021's Kin chronologically, the new album is somewhat of a sequel to This Is Exile thematically, the three-word title Hymns In Dissonance representing that correlation. The band started composing the new album at guitarist Zach Householder's studio in June of 2023, following their headlining tour for The Valley. The collective stuck to a strict weekday schedule, the structure allowing for maximum creativity and minimum burnout. Householder also produced Hymns In Dissonance, which allowed the musicians to seamlessly switch gears from preproduction to recording the full album without skipping a beat. While it seems like a long wait for fans of the band, Hymns Of Dissonance is an ode to the past while taking strides into the future, promising to more than satisfy the musical hunger of long-term fans without alienating those picked up along the way.Vocalist Phil Bozeman joined HEAVY to fill us in."For fans that discovered us within the past couple of years, it will probably be a bit of a newer sound for them," he measured when asked about the sonic intensity of Hymns In Dissonance. "But for people who have followed us for longer than that - from the early days - it's gonna be… it's gonna be familiar territory for sure."We press Bozeman on that notion and ask if the album's musical direction is something the band sits and discusses in the creative process."Being in a band it's very…" he paused, searching for the right way to express himself. "Things come in waves. We're very inspired by a lot of different types of music, a lot of it being hard, death metal and stuff like that, but I think that we were all just having that itch to write something really heavy and extreme again. This is the 40-year-old version of us coming up with that instead of the young kid version, the 21-year-old version of it."In the full interview Phil further discusses the musical nature of Hymns In Dissonance, the writing process which involved working to a schedule, how he personally defines heaviness in music in the modern age, the decreasing universal focus on having to get a flow to your albums due to streaming and the current trend of singles over albums, the lyrical thread of the album and the central characters, road testing the music live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

A few weeks ago I posted on my Instagram (nemtheanga_primordial) some old ticket stubs from the mid 80s to the early 90s and sure enough the violence that surrounded those shows got mentioned in the comments, so I thought I'd revisit that, the reasons why it was happening, a stabbing at a punk gig in 1977 which cast a shadow over gigs in the State for years and I ask, was it just a British isles and Irish thing? if so, why? How it stopped, why gigs now are often just corporate and empty feeling and whisper it....those were the great days, the classic gigs and we wouldn't have it any other way....My Youtube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@AlanAverillNemtheangahead over there and subscribePrimordial on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/0BZr6WHaejNA63uhZZZZek?si=yFFV8ypSSDOESUX62_0TzQsponsored by Metal Blade records https://metalblade.indiemerch.com/promo code AA 2024 for 10% off your order ships worldwideFor info on my work as a booking agent go to: https://www.facebook.com/DragonProductionsOfficialI made some very brutal old school death metal right hereVERMINOUS SERPENThttps://open.spotify.com/artist/54Wpl9JD0Zn4rhpBvrN2Oa?si=zOjIulHXS5y9lW1YHMhgTACheck out my other doom bandDREAD SOVEREIGNhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/60HY4pl0nbOrZA6u2QnqDN?si=sxQ5_1htR6G3WIvy1I_wXAand take a listen to some old school electro goth I madeAPRILMENhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/7GzLO1YJClmN5TvV4A37MJ?si=cRXSk24lQKWSqJG-B8KbWQSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/agitators-anonymous-the-alan-averill-podcast. In today's episode I discuss the idea that the album itself, one of the most defining things of modern culture is becoming a passion project, how deep cuts can just get lost completely and how the streaming format encourages endless singles. How this affects the vision of artists and how with touring becoming so expensive bands revert to greatest hits sets for festivals. Is making a full length right now actually detrimental to the grim business of driving numbers. The files of my original take on the state of the worlds politics in 2024 were corrupted, perhaps the universe is telling me something. So this is just a sideways look at a couple of interesting and difficult conversations I've had lately, starting with the Irish musical phenomenon Kneecap and ending with the darkness of the Grooming gangs scandal in the UK, and how the world is only going to get more wild and we have to try and drop our instinct of dismissing the messengers simply because we don't like their politics, or their history, or just the cut of their jib! support the show over at http://www.patreon.com/AlanAverillMy Youtube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@AlanAverillNemtheangahead over there and subscribePrimordial on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/0BZr6WHaejNA63uhZZZZek?si=yFFV8ypSSDOESUX62_0TzQsponsored by Metal Blade records https://metalblade.indiemerch.com/promo code AA 2024 for 10% off your order ships worldwideFor info on my work as a booking agent go to: https://www.facebook.com/DragonProductionsOfficialI made some very brutal old school death metal right herehttps://open.spotify.com/artist/54Wpl9JD0Zn4rhpBvrN2Oa?si=zOjIulHXS5y9lW1YHMhgTACheck out my other doom bandhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/60HY4pl0nbOrZA6u2QnqDN?si=sxQ5_1htR6G3WIvy1I_wXAand take a listen to some old school electro goth I madehttps://open.spotify.com/artist/7GzLO1YJClmN5TvV4A37MJ?si=cRXSk24lQKWSqJG-B8KbWQSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/agitators-anonymous-the-alan-averill-podcast. HEAVY Music Interviews

At the end of the day, music and the creative arts is all about expression and having fun. In the modern age of entertainment that sense of enjoyment has slowly eroded due to the complexities of the current global climate and the incessant wish to not offend anybody which has resulted in a terser, more rigid sprinkling of bands and musicians that seem void of life because of their over-complicated approach. And what better way to enjoy your craft and have fun than play around with someone else's music? Which is exactly what …And We All Die did with their recent four-track release Static Age.Essentially just two Misfits songs reimagined - Static Age and TV Casualty - the EP sees both songs performed in vastly different fashions, with neither bearing much more in common with the original than by virtue of the song title. Not that the two classic songs have been bastardised beyond recognition - some bands you just don't mess with - but both versions have been afforded the respect they deserve while maintaining just enough of …And We All Die's musical DNA to make the songs their own while still paying homage to the original recordings. The release is a heavy blend of hardcore, post-punk, noise-rock and industrial influences, centred around covers of the two Misfits' tracks alongside two industrial-infused reworkings of the songs featuring Metal Blade synthwave artist Gost.HEAVY recently caught up with the man behind the music, Raymond Estes, to find out more, starting with how the EP has been received."It's been great," he enthused. "So far it's been the best reception we've had for any release. It's hard to say why that is, maybe Spotify is actually working for us this time (laughs), but we can't really complain. Really, the project is me, but it's everybody who contributes and the drummer Walter and guitarist Guillermo are excited about the volume of people that are checking out the tracks and the amount of streams we've been getting. Who knew?"We press Estes on the choice of songs to cover, specifically why choose the Misfits as a band to start with, and also why those particular two songs."I love the Misfits," he shrugged, "and have for a long time. I like horror punk and all that Danzig has done, but for …And We All Die we don't really do horror songs. We do more conceptual songs or songs about the human condition and as a hardcore guy I thought what would be more interesting to do than take songs that are dark and have these more science fiction themes based on the perils of technology and make those fresh. That is more exciting to me than singing about ghouls or zombies."In the full interview, Estes explained the thought process behind covering the same song twice, with the second version being more industrial and featuring contributions from Ghost and William Faith. He mentioned that the band was conscious of not going too far with their covers, as they were aware of the special meaning these songs hold for many people. The early reception of the EP has been positive, with the industrial versions receiving the better response. We talked about deconstructing the songs and then recreating them in their image and any difficulties they faced. The conversation turned to future new music, with a rock album, collection of covers from The Cure, other projects and more. Estes discussed why …And We All Die is currently a studio project only and how he plans to potentially expand that into a touring outfit down the track plus a host of other things.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this episode we travel south of heaven where Hell awaits to spend seasons in the abyss and reign in blood with our undisputed attitude that God hates us all in the Chri$t illusion. Without divine intervention we see a world painted blood in repentless diabolus musica and tell the story of Slayer's debut album, Show No Mercy. In 1981 Huntington Park California guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman met at an audition and realised they were into the same stuff. Living only just around the corner was like-minded bass player and singer Tom Araya. All they needed to create the loudest, heaviest, fastest and most satany band ever was a double kickarse drummer. Then suddenly there was a knock at Kerry King's door. 16 year old Dave Lombardo had been told there was another long haired disreputable type in the area. So the plucky, pizza delivery man went and introduced himself. The original, the classic and the most persistent line up was complete. We will pick up the story there and tell you how that debut album came to be. There will be cameo guest star appearances from Bitch, Metal Blade Records, Iron Maiden, Phantom of the Opera. JOB FOR A COWBOY frontman Jonny Davy and EXIT EDEN co-vocalist Anna Brunner join us for this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast Scott Penfold sits down first with JOB FOR A COWBOY vocalist Jonny Davy to discuss the death metal outfit's latest album "Moon Healer". “Moon Healer” is set for release on February 23rd via Metal Blade Records. The release marks JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s first new full-length in a decade! “Moon Healer” is a vivid illustration of what happens when creativity, aggression, and volatility tangle for the first time in years. Like the band's critically adored, 2014-released “Sun Eater” offering, “Moon Healer” is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. Featuring a newly refreshed and reinspired lineup of frontman and co-founder Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis, the band seamlessly picks up the mantle where JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s “Sun Eater” left off. Compared to past offerings, “Moon Healer” is as bone-crushing as JOB FOR A COWBOY has ever been. But it's more consistent and conceptual, composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence. “The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band,” Davy says. “As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn't have considered in our earlier years.” “Moon Healer” was produced by Jason Suecof (DEATH ANGEL, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, DEICIDE) at his Audiohammer Studios and is the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project FLESHWROUGHT, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Koperweis also worked as a session drummer for MACHINE HEAD and WHITECHAPEL and is currently in the band ENTHEOS, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023. In the second portion of the podcast, Scott sits down with Anna Brunner from EXIT EDEN. Symphonic metal unit EXIT EDEN, consisting of Clémentine Delauney (VISIONS OF ATLANTIS), Anna Brunner (LEAGUE OF DISTORTION) and Marina La Torraca (PHANTOM ELITE) recently released their second album, “Femmes Fatales” via Napalm Records. “Femmes Fatales” includes 12 songs in total — half covers, half original compositions. EXIT EDEN‘s new release follows the band's debut, 2017's “Rhapsodies In Black”, which garnered millions of video views (12 million on EXIT EDEN‘s cover of Bonnie Tyler‘s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” alone). Previous singles from “Femmes Fatales”, “Run!” (featuring ex-NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala) and “Separate Ways” (JOURNEY cover) have already surpassed a million views since their respective releases in October and December 2023. Now performing as a trio, EXIT EDEN‘s new full-length follows the path of its predecessor, as it contains six cover versions of famous cross-generational super-hits, but this time also shines by offering six original compositions. With one exception (“Dying In My Dreams”, co-written by Marina La Torraca),the remaining five original songs were brought to life by Brunner and Hannes Braun (KISSIN' DYNAMITE),who is also responsible for recording, production and mixing, whereas the album was mastered by Jacob Hansen (DELAIN, AMARANTHE, VOLBEAT, DESTRUCTION and many more). Self-confidently leading straight into the tempting world of EXIT EDEN, opening “Femme Fatale”, “Buried In The Past” and “Hold Back Your Fear” conjure a mystical atmosphere with strings and orchestral elements, topped by complementary vocals uniting the sonic diversity of the all-femme trio. “Dying In My Dreams” and album closing “Elysium” set the tone as captivating mid-tempo tracks with intense choruses that speak straight to the heart.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Asinhell over Zoom video! For more than 20 years, vocalist/guitarist Michael Poulsen has been spearheading Danish rock and roll machine Volbeat, releasing eight full-lengths, selling millions of albums, and filling stadiums worldwide. Before fronting Volbeat, however, Poulsen formed death metal band Dominus, which recorded four fast, brutal albums in the mid '90s. When Poulsen was putting together songs for Volbeat's 2021 album, Servant of the Mind, he wrote a bunch of death metal riffs and saved them on his phone. Then, when he was done with the Volbeat record, he reopened the rusty gates to Armageddon and started putting together songs for his new death metal band Asinhell, whose debut album Impii Hora (Latin for Ungodly Hour), is a tribute to Poulsen's favorite old-school groups. The songs are rooted in crushing riffs yet injected with strong guitar hooks and shout-along refrains. While Poulsen sings in Volbeat and sang for Dominus, he didn't want to front Asinhell. So, in March 2022, he called his old friend, ex-Morgoth singer Marc Grewe (Insidious Disease) and invited him to join the party. "I had known Michael quite a long time and he always mentioned that we should do a death metal project one day, but I never took him too seriously because he was so busy with Volbeat," Grewe says. "Then he called for real and said, 'Yeah, I want to do it now. Are you up for it?' Immediately, I was 'Yes, of course!'"After considering drummer friends from established bands, Poulsen asked Morten Toft Hansen from Danish group Raunchy to join. Not only does Morten play like a fiend possessed, his and Poulsen's six-year-old daughters are good friends… and, it takes just 10 minutes to drive to Morten's place. The two veteran musicians started practicing and completed a full song almost every time they got together. Grewe was tied up at home in Germany when it came time to write the vocals, so Poulsen sent the singer phone recordings from rehearsals to start the process. Through Poulsen and Toft Hansen's years of experience and renewed hunger to destroy, they captured a firestorm in a bottle.Asinhell went from being a mere idea to recording the piledriving full-length Impii Hora in about a year. Poulsen asked Volbeat's management to help find a home for Asinhell and was thrilled when they mentioned that Metal Blade founder Brian Slagel would love the band. As soon as he heard Impii Hora, Slagel made Asinhell a top priority. "It's such a dream come true for me to get to be on fucking Metal Blade Records," Poulsen exclaims. "When they said they wanted to put out the album, I felt like I was 17 years old again. I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm making a deal with Metal Blade! How cool is that?' It was like I was finally getting the record deal I dreamed of when I was a teenager."We want to hear from you! This week we look back to a time when the music industry was, mostly, run through a handful of record labels. With big money to be made, record companies such as Capitol, Epic, Columbia, and Atlantic wielded a lot of power. Buyouts were happening such as in the case of Polygram acquiring Casablanca Records which would result in a very in-flux KISS winding up on Mercury Records. Smaller labels, while limited financially, were successful at times due to scouting new talent and breaking it. This circumstance would lead labels such as Elektra, Metal Blade, and Megaforce to be on the ground floor of some legendary careers and genres. In this discussion, we discuss all of these record labels, many of the notable artists that inhabited their rosters, how they stacked up in the rock world, and much more. The era we're focusing on this time is 1980-1984.  Was the rule and oversight of the early 80's music industry a good thing? Is today's wide open musical climate a better thing for artists?
